Chapter 1
The small house was quiet at two in the morning. Zadie sat in front of her laptop, her infant, Lydia cradled in one arm, with her free hand she’s typing something, incredibly slow. She was writing a paper for her English class, that was due in seven hours. Since she had Lydia, she enrolled back in school. She only needed six credits to finish getting her degree. She honestly wondered why she never went back to school. Oh well, it wasn’t too late. Her mother watched Lydia while she was in class. Her poor mother did everything she possibly could to help her. She was beyond thankful. She typed the final words to her paper, feeling proud of herself. She closed her laptop quietly, bathing the room in the darkness. She cuddled next to Lydia. It’s only been the two of them, every night together, and she wouldn’t trade it for anything else out there. She closed her eyes, thinking of Lydia’s father. Brycin Blue. Not once in the nine months that she was pregnant, did he call or even text, and not even after she was born. Lydia was now six months old, and not once had he bothered. Zadie pushed him out of her mind. It’s his loss. He didn’t deserve their precious daughter anyway. A couple of hours into her deep sleep, and she’s awakened by crying. She glanced at her digital clock, five in the morning, right on time, Lydia. She sang in her baby’s ear, rocking her back to sleep, as she breastfed her. A couple of more hours of sleep and Zadie was up
getting ready for class. Her mother sat on the edge of Zadie’s bed, rocking Lydia in her arms. “Do we need anything from the store, Mom?” Zadie asked, brushing her hair. “I need to stop and get diapers.” Her mother shakes her head, completely mesmerized by her little granddaughter. She had been an entirely different person since Zadie got pregnant, and even more different after Lydia was born. Zadie loved it. Her old mother had so much energy, it was a miracle. Zadie smiled to herself as she drove to school, listening to the morning talk show, hating that they don’t play music early in the morning. She listened as the three Djs talked about their personal lives. She was a different person to. She was a mom now. A single mom at that, but with the help of her own mother, she did just fine. She would be everything her little daughter needs, Zadie thought to herself. She could teach her everything that a man, only better. Zadie giggled quietly as she parked her car in her usual parking spot. The university was already packed with students and teachers, everyone hurrying to their destinations. Zadie threw her backpack over her shoulder and headed for class. The paper she stayed up all night to do, clenched in her right hand. Every time she was at school, she felt out of place, being the oldest kid in most of her classes. One guy even recognized her from her octagon girl days, he pointed at her and said, her girl, you’re one of the chicks that would hold up the numbers before the guys would beat each other to pulps. Zadie handed her professor the paper, he smiled at her as he accepted it. He was a bit of a creep when it came to Zadie, but than, a lot of guys are. She took her
seat in the back of the class, taking out her laptop and phone. Her mother sent her a video of Lydia laughing and smiling. “Is that your baby?” Zadie looked up. A tall and handsome, clean shaven, young man stood in front of her desk, waiting politely for her to answer his question. “Yes,” Zadie answered. “She’s adorable,” he replied, smiling. He sat down in the empty desk in front of her, still facing her. His green eyes studying her. “I’m Luke,” he stuck his hand out for her to shake. “Zadie,” she shook his hand. “You new around here?” he asked her, raising an eyebrow. “Um, no,” she answered. “I’ve been in this class for the last seven months. I’ve seen you sit in that seat over there,” she pointed her pen to the other side of the room at an empty desk between two girls. “and stare at me almost every day were in here.” Luke chuckled. “I know, I know. I just didn’t know what to say, or how to introduce myself.” He glanced down at his sneakers embarrassed. Zadie blushed, then felt bad for calling him out. “I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s okay.” Luke smirked. “Your daughter really is adorable though,” he said. “Just like you.” “Thank you,” Zadie said, trying to hear what the professor is lecturing about. Luke cleared his throat. “Would you like to go to dinner with me tonight?” “What?” Zadie asked, she didn’t hear him. “Would you like to go to dinner with me tonight?” Zadie’s eyes darted from the professor to Luke,
who stared at her, like a hopeful little puppy dog. “I don’t know,” she said, teetering the idea over in her mind. It had been awhile since a guy asked her out, but Luke was way to young for her. Her eyes ran down his chiseled chin, down to his fit body, and she began imagining, very naughty, dirty things about the young man. “I’m old enough to be your mom,” she tells him. “I’m twenty-one,” he said, laughing. “I’m twenty-five,” she replied, her eyes popped wide. “I have a daughter.” “I don’t mind,” he said, placing his hand on hers. A small shock ignited as they touched. He pulled his back slowly. “Just one night,” he pleaded. “I’ve been watching from you the other side of class, for seven months now. Just give me one night to get to know you.” Zadie’s cheeks turned red again, and she nodded. “Okay,” she breathed, a hint of excitement. “One night.” “Perfect,” Luke smiled, turning to face the front of the classroom and the professor pacing back and forth. “Be ready by eight,” Luke said, still facing the other direction. “I shall,” Zadie whispered.
The school day went by fast. She stopped at the grocery store and picked up a few things, trying to remember that Lydia needed diapers. And low and behold who did she see, walking hand in hand down the aisle, the chip aisle that is. Brycin and Lacy, appeared happy as can as be. Zadie ducked behind a display rack of assorted muffins, praying to god that they didn’t see her. She scurried down the aisle. Pushing her shopping cart
quickly. “Zadie?” She stopped, turning around to see Brycin Blue staring at her, alone. “I thought that was you,” he said to her, smiling. His eyes look her over, then to the shopping basket. “She isn’t with me,” Zadie told him, turning around. Seeing him made her sick. Her stomach turned, knotting. “Wait, Zadie,” he said, trying to grab her arm. “Leave me alone, Brycin.” Zadie stormed off. But he followed. “Please, Zadie. I just want to hear how the two of you have been doing.” Zadie turned around to face him. A look of pure madness written upon her usual angelic appearance. “It’s too late for that Brycin. You could have been there to see your daughter. Or even a picture of her. We all know you want no part of her life. And don’t worry, because you don’t need to be.” She started on her way again, after she sees Lacy sauntering over to them, excitedly. “Your bimbo’s coming. Have a nice life,” Zadie hollered back at him. What a shithead, she thought to herself. She piled her groceries in the trunk of her car, her blood boiling. Just calm down, she told herself. Don’t let him get to you. He’s no part of your life anymore. She sped home, ready to see Lydia. Once she was home, she told her mother all about her run in with Brycin. And her mother shook her head, she hated the man, despised him. She wanted to run out there and kill him, for wanting no part of her sweet granddaughter’s life, but like she told Zadie, it was his loss. And truly, it was his loss. Her mother calmed her down, as she usually does.
Zadie cooked them dinner and cleaned up the house a little bit, informing her mother of her date at eight. “I’ll only be gone an hour, Mom,” she said, wiping the kitchen counters clean. “That’s fine, Hunny,” her mother said. “Me and Lydia, here will hold down the fort. You go enjoy yourself,” her mother gives her a motherly smile from the couch, “you’ve been working so hard with school and this little munchkin, you deserve a night out.” “Thanks, Mom,” Zadie said, taking Lydia from her arms. “I’ll take her for a bit, you go take a break. The house is clean. I’m not leaving till eight, so you’re free to go,” Zadie smiled, holding Lydia up to her face. “How’s my babygirl? Oh, look at those beautiful eyes.” Zadie hated the fact that she had her father’s electric blue eyes. Lydia smiled and cooed. Zadie cradled her daughter and flipped on the TV, surfing the channels as her mother went upstairs. For some odd reason, she wounded up on the sports channel and a replay of one of Brycin’s matches was on. He was fighting an Asian man, and winning. His hard fist collided with the man’s face, sending blood in the air, and the crowd roared. The Asian man fell back into the gate. He tried to get up, but Brycin got on top of him, his fist barreling the side of the man’s face. Zadie missed watching the fights. Ufc was a part of her. It was her life for so many years. She imagined herself there, standing on the sidelines, cheering Brycin on, getting wet as he pounded the other man to submission. The crowd applauded as did she. Brycin stood up, throwing his blood covered fists in the air, shouting in victory and looking right at her, as he usually did, but now it was Lacy he looked at when he
won. Her phone chimed, shaking her out of her daydream. She expected it to be Luke from class, but it wasn’t, it was Brycin, wanting to set up a day they can meet. She ignored his message, just like he ignored the fact that he had a daughter for the last six or so months. She turned off the TV, rocking her baby. She wasn’t going to let him ruin her day. Not anymore. She rested her head back, humming to Lydia. She wondered what Luke was like outside of school, she only ever saw him in class, and she didn’t even know his name till today. He seemed like a nice, genuine guy. She always caught him staring at her from across the room, like he was staring at a piece of expensive art, like she held the secrets to the universe. She smiled to herself, getting anxious for their date later on, but not wanting it to come because that meant leaving her daughter for an hour or so.
Chapter 2
Eight O’ clock came, and Zadie stared in the mirror, dressed casually in a nice sundress and some peach colored heels. She grabbed her clutch from the counter and hurried downstairs. “Okay, Mom,” she said. “I will be back no later then ten, are you sure you got her?” She glanced at Lydia sleeping in her mechanical swing. “This isn’t my first rodeo,” her mother replied, hands on her hips. “Go. Have fun, don’t worry about us. I got a pizza on the way and a movie ready to play. We’ll be just fine.” Zadie grinned. “Okay. If anything just give me a call, and I’ll be here right away.” She planted a kiss on
her sleeping daughter’s cheek, and then her mother’s. “I love you guys.” and she was out the door, and climbing into her car. Luke messaged her a smiley face, which made her smile. They were meeting at a sports bar downtown, then they were going to a restaurant from there. She checked her reflection in her rearview mirror before exiting her car. Downtown was crowded. There was people everywhere. Big groups, and some alone, others with their partner or friend. She crossed the street, squeezing between two taxis. Luke waved at her from the end of the sidewalk. An enthusiastic smile across his face. “Hey,” he told her, when she reached him. He wrapped his arms around her, giving her a welcoming hug. “Traffic is bad, huh,” he said. “Yeah, terrible,” she snickered, looking around the busy buildings. The chilly air kissed her pale face, chilling her bones. She was ready to get inside somewhere. “Where did you have in mind?” she asked, after they stood there in an awkward silence watching the passerby’s. “This way,” he said, taking her hand. “There’s this cool place me and buddies sometimes hangout at. It’s pretty nice. It’s a bar, but it’s not loud like the others.” “Cool,” Zadie said, as they weaved their way through the packed sidewalks. Thirty minutes later, they’re sitting in a booth, watching a football game, and sipping beers, awkwardly. “So,” Zadie said, attempting to break the ice. “Come here often?” “Every other weekend or so,” he said. “We like to watch the fights here.” “Boxing?” Zadie asked, sipping her beer, eying the young man from the rim of her beer.
“Ufc,” he corrected her. “That Brycin Blue, he’s a god.” Zadie almost choked on her beer. Deer god, why did he have to mention him. She was barely getting him out of her mind. She shakes her head. “He’s a terrible fighter,” she uttered bitterly. “Do you even watch Ufc?” Luke said shocked. “He’s only the best fighter in his class. He takes down almost every guy he goes against. I bet he gets any girl he wants.” “I’m sure he does,” Zadie said, bored. “Can we talk about something else?” she asked him. Luke shrugs his shoulders, running one hand through his short brown hair. “Sure,” he smiled. “Whatever you want to talk about.” He sipped his beer, waiting to hear her topic of choice. “I don’t know,” she said, one finger tapping the cold beer bottle in her hands. “Anything but Ufc.” “Okay,” Luke peered around the sports bar. “Do you work?” “I use to,” she said. “Right now, I’m just focusing on school and my daughter.” “I hear that,” Luke said. An awkward silence fell upon the them. Zadie fiddled with the hem of her skirt, listening to the chatter around them. The waitress came to deliver them another round of drinks. Zadie tried to think of a conversation starter, but her mind couldn’t think of anything. Her eyes lingered on the frosty bottle between her hands. “Sorry this is a lame date,” said Luke, after a few more silent moments, shrugging his shoulders. “It isn’t lame,” Zadie laughed. “We just don’t know each other that’s all.”
Luke seemed embarrassed. “So what’s your daughter’s name?” “Lydia,” Zadie answered. “She’s going to be seven months soon. What about you? Any kids of your own?” Luke shook his head rather quickly. “No,” he said. “I do like kids though. I have little nieces and nephews, but none of my own.” “That’s nice,” Zadie said. Bored of their date already. She wondered what her mother and daughter are doing. If Lydia was being fussy or not. She tried to hide her restlessness from Luke. The bell at the entrance rang, Zadie glanced up to see Brycin Blue waltzing in. Her stomach sank. Lower than the ground if it were possible. She ducked her head behind a tall menu. Why, her, she asked herself. Why did she have to run into this man every where she went. Luke looked at her strangely. “You alright?” He poked his head around the menu she hid behind. “The cheeseburgers here are phenomenal.” He added, one eyebrow raised. “Let’s go,” Zadie breathed. “Let’s get some fresh air. I know this nice restaurant down on fifth, it’s lovely.” “Sure,” Luke responded, grabbing his coat. Not sensing that something is wrong. Zadie stood up, watching Brycin jaunt over to the bar, alone. “It just feels crowded in here,” she told her date. Luke turned his head, getting a good look at the half-empty bar. He shrugged his shoulders. “Okay,” he said. “Whatever you want to do.” Zadie headed for the door, Luke trailing behind her. Once they stepped through the exit, she could breathe. The chilly air bathed her lungs, refreshed her senses. Luke grinned at her. “Feel better?” He places a
heavy hand on her shoulder, giving her a worried look. “I can drive you home, If you’d like. We can totally do this another time.” “No it’s okay,” Zadie said, her eyes meeting Luke’s for the first time. The moon reflects in his big starry eyes. His cologne creeps up her nostrils. She sticks her arm out, and he takes it, but before they take one step, Brycin Blue exits the bar running straight into them. “What the fuck is this,” the fighter said, a cigarette in his mouth, eyes wide open. “Brycin Blue?” Luke said, stunned. Zadie tried to walk around the big man, dragging Luke with her. “Leave us alone, Brycin,” she uttered, through gritted teeth. “Who the fuck is this, Zadie?” Brycin demanded, grabbing Luke by the sleeve. The vein in his neck was throbbing. His electric blue eyes piercing Zadie’s. “Leave us alone,” Zadie said. Luke was still in shock from Brycin Blue being up close to him. He couldn’t speak. He was half afraid of the big man knocking him out cold with one punch. “Where is our daughter?” Brycin shouted at her, yanking her arm. Zadie screamed. “Let go of me,” she croaked. “I can do whatever the fuck I want. With whoever the fuck I want, Brycin.” “Let go of the lady, Man,” Luke said to Brycin, calmly. Half scared he might turn his hostile attention toward him. “You’re hurting her.” Luke placed his hand on Brycin’s arm, a huge mistake. “Don’t lay a finger on me, Little Boy,” Brycin warned. Zadie struggled to break her sleeve from his grasp, but he was too strong. She couldn’t break free. “Don’t
touch him,” she blurted at Brycin. “You’re fucking crazy, you know that? Not once have you bothered with us for a year and a half almost, and now all of a sudden you think you can control me?” She yelled those words at Brycin. People walked around them, staring, wondering what was going on. Brycin threw each of them ugly glances. Some even recognized him. One person even started to record him. Brycin flipped that man the bird, as he held Zadie with his other hand. “Let her go, Bro,” Luke said, wanting to defend his date. A crowd of people stood around them now, anticipating what was to come. Zadie cried, embarrassed. She felt so bad for Luke. Like everything else, Brycin had to ruin it. He had to show up at the bar she was at. The grocery store. Every friggin’ place she went, she ran into him, and his bimbo girlfriend. Brycin shook his head. “You should be at home, watching our daughter, instead you’re out here, fucking strangers?” Brycin flung a hand at Luke, who stared at the ground, counting the pebbles. Zadie slapped Brycin, and it was as if everything stopped. The chatter, the cameras flashing, the passing cars, even time itself. In that one slap, all of her hatred, anger, resentment toward Brycin collided with his bearded cheek. He raised his hand, face flushed red. Luke grabbed his arm, trying to stop him from hitting Zadie, instead Brycin’s fist collided with his bony cheek and he hit the floor like he was hit head on by an eighteen wheeler. Brycin snickered, letting go of Zadie and breaking through the small crowd around them. He disappeared around the corner.
Zadie helped Luke to his feet, yelling at people to move out of her away. Luke groaned in her ear, his feet dragging. Her car was somewhere around here. They crossed the street, the small crowd of people still watching them. “I’m so sorry, Luke,” Zadie repeated over and over again, until she helped him in the passenger seat. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect for any of this to happen tonight. He ruined everything,” she ranted on, trying to get a good look at Luke’s eye. “It’s okay,” he mumbled back, attempting to smile. His head is rested against the passenger door window, his eyes are shut. The left one is completely swollen shut. Zadie’s breathing quickens. “I’m going to take you to the nearest hospital,” she said, starting her car. “And from there, if you want to press charges I will take you to the police station myself.” “Zadie,” Luke breathed, his hand slowly finding her soft, delicate cheek. “It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. Now, I can tell everyone I got punched by Brycin Blue.” he chuckled. But, Zadie didn’t find it as amusing. “I’m serous, Luke. He knocked you pretty good. You need to get it looked at,” she urged, feeling one hundred percent guilty. It was her fault he got punched. He was only trying to help her. Luke shook his head, and hand. The skin around his swollen eye a dark purple. It looked like he got stung by a million bees. “It’s okay. I’m being honest. I’ve been in plenty of fights,” he said confidently. “Where are we going to get dinner?” “We’ll pick something up, on the way to my house,” Zadie said. “I’m going to patch you up. I have a kit at
home.” “So that’s what I have to do in order to get a girl to invite me over?” Luke smirked jokingly. “Get punched in the face, by a national Ufc champion.” “It isn’t funny,” Zadie said, steering them to the nearest fast food restaurant. “He had no right to do that. He has no right to worry about what I do, or my daughter.” Zadie turned down the radio, she couldn’t hear her own thoughts. “So Brycin Blue is your baby daddy?” Luke asked, like she was making the whole thing up, and he was on one big episode of punked. Zadie nodded, ashamed. “Wow,” he replied. “That’s crazy… Why did he flip out back there?” Luke moaned as he touched the side of his head. His face and head felt horrible, but it was worth it. Not because he was punched by Brycin Blue, but because he was able to help Zadie. “He doesn’t play a role, whatsoever,” Zadie told him. “He wanted no part of Lydia’s life. Why should what he wants matter now? What I wanted or needed, didn’t matter. What our sweet little girl needs, doesn’t matter to him.” Zadie turned out of the burger joint, heading for home, thinking of ways to get back at Brycin. “I didn’t think he would be that kind of man,” Luke said, sounding disappointed, like when a kid finds out Santa isn’t real. “Yeah, well. Neither did I,” said Zadie, her eyes on the long dark road ahead. The scent of french fries filled her nostrils. She should never had agreed to go on the date with Luke, what was she thinking? Now look what happened to him, he got hurt. Badly. Her min wandered, as she listened to the radio. Why did Brycin freak out like that? He acted like
they were dating. He put on a whole show for the crowd outside the bar, embarrassing all three of them. She didn’t do anything wrong. He was just jealous, she told herself. He saw her with a hot younger man, and got his ego hurt. He saw someone else, with something he wanted to himself.
Chapter 3
Zadie rinsed out Luke’s bruised and swollen eye, dabbing the side of his head with a white towel. He banged the side of his head hard, when he fell after Brycin punched him. Zadie pouted her red lips at Luke, feeling so guilty. His handsome, perfect face was ruined because of her. “It’s okay,” Luke grinned, noticing her guilty look with his one good eye. “It’s a battle scar. He could’ve killed me if he wanted to.” Luke grabbed her wrist. “I’m sorry,” she said once more. “It isn’t your fault,” he told her, whispering in her ear. He leaned back on the restroom counter, lost in her beautiful eyes. “Who knew, Brycin Blue is a douche bag.” “The biggest of them all,” Zadie sighed, she finished cleaning his cut, bandaging it. “I hope I can make it up to you, I really want to. You’re such a nice guy, you didn’t deserve that.” “How about Saturday night? There’s a cool place me and some friends are checking out,” Luke said, eagerly. “It’d be awesome if you went with me.” Zadie nodded. “Definitely.” She opened the restroom door for him, but he stopped her and gently placed one hand on her cheek, caressing her head
towards him. He leaned in slowly, his eyes closing at the same pace, his lips found hers. Zadie didn’t stop him. She loved the feel of his soft lips on hers. The smell of his sweet breathe. The feel of his rigid body against hers. He was gentle and soft, not at all like Brycin. Luke pinned her against the wall. His hands were running up and down her body. His lips massaged hers. Zadie moaned as he kissed her neck, her entire body shivered. One hand ran down the young mans back as he took off his shirt, revealing his toned chest. Zadie squeezed his firm tush as he kissed her all over, sending shocks through her delicate body. She lifted her skirt as he carried her onto the restroom counter, her legs on his shoulders. She undid his belt, focusing on his eyes which were on her hands, watching her unbutton his black jeans. “Are you sure you want to do this?” Luke said in a husky voice, trying to be quiet. “You mom and daughter are down the hall.” He said, as she kissed his chest, one hand inside his gray briefs, massaging his long, semierect shaft. “It’s fine,” she told him, seductively, kissing his lips. Luke nodded as she kissed around his belly button, his black jeans slid to the floor, his now hard cock hangs out free. The mushroom tip brushed her lips and it drove him wild. Zadie parted her lips, taking him in her mouth, and for a minute, she pictured Brycin standing over her, his cock in her mouth. She pushed the image away, Luke’s was so much bigger than his. Luke groaned as she pleasured him, until he stopped her, and leaned her back on the counter and threw her legs over his broad shoulders. Zadie lifted her skirt eagerly, wanting him inside
her. Her eyes fixated on his hard cock still wet with her saliva. He pushed back her skirt, exposing her pink laced panties. He didn’t slide them off her long legs, he pushed them aside with two fingers, entering her slowly. Zadie reared her head, moaning quietly as he fingered her. One of his hands worked on his long meaty member and the other worked on her, giving her the joyride of her life. She didn’t want him to stop. His fingers slid from her vagina and he kissed her one last time before, rubbing the tip of his hard dick against the entry of her pink flower. “Fuck yeah,” he whispered over her, breathing heavily. His back arched. Zadie shuddered as he pushed himself deeper inside her. The cold restroom counter becoming uncomfortable, but it was nothing to the ecstasy that Luke was giving her. She groaned lustfully as he thrusted against her. His balls slapped the bottom of her ass. His gentle hands held her legs in the air. His long cock slid in and out of her tight, juicy hole. He pushed harder and harder every time. He kissed Zadie’s neck, thinking to himself of how beautiful she is. His eyes wandered down to her breasts bobbing up and down as he pounded her. “Yes,” Zadie moaned, one hand flat on his abs. “Don’t stop…don’t stop.” Luke had no intentions on stopping. He picked her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He leaned his bare ass against the restroom counter as she bounced up and down on his long member. The warmth of her around his cock, was becoming too much for him to handle, his dick twitched and he felt like he was going to explode. Zadie moaned louder and louder, her vagina tightening around him. He could feel her body trembling,
he hit that magical spot harder, he pumped his legs as she brought her ass down on him. “I’m gonna cum,” he breathed, sweat beading down his back. He stood up, taking her off his dick and leaning her over the counter. He stuffed his big cock back inside her tight pussy, and pounded away, one hand on her shoulder, the other on her waist. Zadie turned to watch his face. She liked the facial expressions guys made when they were going at it, so cannibalistic, full of fire, it turned her on. Her body shook against his, her knees became jelly as he pounded her like there was no tomorrow. “Cum inside me,” she begged him, groaning. And that’s exactly what he did.
Chapter 4
The next morning came, and Zadie awoke next to Luke. She peered around her dim room to the crib in the corner, Lydia slept soundly. Zadie smiled and laid back down, her hand on Luke’s chest. She had so much fun last night, after their little encounter in her restroom, they stayed up all night with Lydia, watching movies and eating their cheeseburgers. She needed a night like that. She tried to block out running into Brycin, but every time she looked at Luke in the face she was reminded by his big black eye. She closed her eyes as she thought of the things she had to do today. She wanted to do nothing at all, but lay in bed with Luke all day. She only had one class today at twelve, which she could skip if she really wanted to. She checked her phone and was shocked to see a message from Brycin. A bright green bubble on the screen of her phone. He put, sorry for last night and some other bullshit that she wasn’t going to buy into. “Good morning,” Luke yawned, putting his arm around her and bringing her in closer. “Morning,” Zadie smiled, pecking his cheek. “How’s your eye feeling” “Better,” he replied. He couldn’t help but smile at the stunning woman in his arms. He pulls the red satin black up to his chin as got cold. He was completely naked under the red comforter. “I don’t know what you have to do today,” Zadie started, sitting up from the bed and walking over to Lydia.
“But we’re free for the rest of the day.” She smiled and shrugged her shoulders in question. Luke grinned, his million dollar smile. It was Zadie’s favorite thing about him. “I have absolutely nothing to do today.” He hopped from the bed and threw his clothes on in a hurry. “Although, let me run to my apartment and shower, change. And I’ll pick you ladies up at,” he glanced at his watch, “Ten?” “Perfect,” Zadie chuckled, as he hurried out of her bedroom excitedly, like a big dork. He jogged back and pecked her cheek with a cheesy genuine smile. “I’ll see you in a few,” he said, and he left. “That’s a nice guy,” Zadie said to her sleeping daughter. “Your daddy use to be like that.” Zadie stood there, reminiscing over the good times with Brycin. There weren’t enough to make up for the bad ones, and from now on, he won’t have a hold on her life. Not anymore. She deserved to be happy. She deserved to be with someone who wanted to be there. Not only for her, but for her infant daughter, she mattered above all else. She wasn’t going to keep their daughter from the man but, she isn’t going to let him take her anywhere alone. She would end up getting lost with some whores on some alleyway. She fixed her bed, humming under breathe. They were going to be okay, because Zadie would be everything her daughter ever needed.
Luke arrived at her house at exactly ten. They spent the day at the zoo, eating cotton candy, showing Lydia all the different animals, even though she was only seven months, Zadie liked to think that her daughter had a good time on that day, because she did. It was so
wonderful, for a second she thought that is what it would be like, having a little family. Luke was wonderful. He was a big dork and such a blast to be around. He carried Lydia through the butterfly exhibit as neon colored butterflies soared around them. It was magical. They ended the day with dinner at a pizza parlor. Lydia in her car-seat between them, sound asleep. Luke and Zadie chatted nonstop. About everything and anything. And with each passing second, Zadie couldn’t help but feel like she knew him before. In a past life or somewhere far away, in another time. They finished the night off with a kiss at her doorstep. One for Lydia, and one for Zadie, a deep passionate one. “I’ll call you later,” Luke smiled with his pepperoni breathe. “I’ll be waiting,” Zadie replied, waving at him as he walked to his car. She hurried inside and told her waiting mother how awesome their date was. Luke was such a gentleman. He did all the right things, and by gods luck, they didn’t run into Brycin, anywhere. She laid her daughter in her crib and went to the bathroom to wipe off her make-up. She never wore much, but just enough so she didn’t look like a stumbling tired zombie. With Lydia around she barely got any sleep. She flipped on the TV as she rested in bed, falling asleep within minutes of shutting her eyes. She dreamed of Luke, and Lydia. She dreamed of things she didn’t even remember, but her favorite one was of Luke, standing at the top of a hill, snuggled in his long, toned arms. She smiled and chuckled, feeling like she was in heaven. No worries. No, Brycin Blue. Just her, Luke, and Lydia. Everything perfect as it could be, until everything
around her turned black, and Luke and Lydia vanished and it was just her alone, standing in vast emptiness. “Lydia?” Zadie hollered. “Baby, where are you?” She turned on her heels, scanning everywhere but it was only blackness for as far as the eye can see. No answer. A hand rested on her shoulder. “Zadie, I have been waiting for you,” the deep voice said, speaking into her ear causing her knees to rattle. “Brycin,” she uttered under her breathe, turning around slowly to face the man. “What do you want? Where’s Lydia?” she asked him, raising her hand in anger, but he grabbed it with incredible force. “She’s mine now,” he chuckled evilly, his beady eyes seeing right through her. “And you’re all alone. With your little college boyfriend.” he laughed again. “Where is she?” Zadie asked again, her tone dire. “Just give me our daughter, Brycin,” she begged, for some strange reason, something told her something was wrong. That something happened to her dear little Lydia. “She’s gone,” Brycin said in his naturally menacing tone. “And you’re never getting her back.” He laughed loudly now. His hearty laughter filled her ears, vibrated against her eardrums. It was so shrill it could’ve broken glass to bits. She awakened. Laying in her bed, drenched in a cold sweat. Her heart pounded against her ribcage. It felt so real. She felt like she actually lost Lydia. She smiled tiredly at her baby daughter snuggled next to her, in a pink nightgown. “I love you, Baby. And I’m never going to lose you. Not over my dead body.” It was three in the morning and she was wide awake. Lydia had awakened at her usual feeding time and will be asleep for the next three hours, so she should
take advantage of the extra sleep time, but she couldn’t drift back to sleep. Brycin clogged her thoughts, per usual. He stood there in the middle of the octagon, his face bandaged and bruised, smiling as he punched the lights out of another dude. He climbed on top of him, prey devouring a weak meal. His eyes enraged. His muscles glistening with sweat. Zadie shook her head. What are you doing? She scolded herself. Why are you thinking about him? Luke was great today, but no matter how hard she tried, she could never push Brycin out of her mind, he was always there, like an annoying tic in the back of her head. She rolled over, attempting to get comfortable. Eventually, she knocked out. And dreamed of nothing. Sweet, blissful nothingness.
A week sped by. Zadie had paper after paper for every class she had. And to top it off Lydia caught a common cold that had been going around. So that meant long nights, but it was worth it for her daughter, for her she would sacrifice anything she had. She hadn’t heard from Brycin at all. So that made her happy. Her and Luke have been seeing each other almost every night. They spent the days together at school, caught lunch together. She was waiting to see if he was going to make it official with her, or not. She guessed he was waiting, which was totally cool with her, but she wondered why. They seemed like two peas in a pod whenever they were together. They liked all the same things. He didn’t even mind that she had a child. A seven month old at that. Not many guys were cool with
something like that, and it meant a lot to Zadie, and she made sure to let him know how much she appreciated him every time they went out. She began to think he was too good to be true, but whenever doubtful thoughts arose, she drowned them out. Even if it didn’t work out between the two of them, she would still have Lydia, and that’s okay with her. So, she decided to just go with the flow. Whatever is going to happen, will happen. And whatever doesn’t, doesn’t. Her phone rang. It was Luke, asking her if they were still on for dinner at Sushi A. She reassured him, that they were still on. And when they ended their call, she swore it sounded like a girl was with him. She shook her head, biting her nails, why was she worried? About every little thing? She was just waiting for the ball to drop. Something had to be up with Luke, something she couldn’t put her finger on.
Chapter 5
It was Lydia’s first birthday. The entire house was decorated from head to toe. Pink and green balloons adorned every post and chair. Banners and ribbons were strewn everywhere. Music played and kids ran in and out every door, shouting and laughing. Zadie and her mother grinned at each other, so delighted that the party was a success. Zadie stood in the center of the living room, passing out goody bags to all the little kids .Zadie laughed as the little kids compared each others goodies to the others. Cake was everywhere, usually this is something that Zadie would be mad about, but she let the kids slide this once. She sipped her beer, joining her guests outside. The scent of roasting barbeque greeted her the moment she stepped foot outside. She walked over to the grill, placing her hand on the cook’s shoulder. “Well, hello there,” Luke said, a gorgeous grin from ear to ear. He wore a black apron around his shorts and tee. A black pair of shades concealed his big brown eyes. He kissed Zadie. “How was everything going inside?” “Good,” Zadie said, looking around the yard. A group of octagon girls sat around a picnic table each of them eye raping Zadie’s new piece of man meat. They were her closest friends she had from work, and none of them wanted to miss Lydia’s big day. Lydia was loved by everyone, she was passed around from person to person, each of them giving her some love. Nothing else made Zadie happier, besides Luke. It’s been six months that they have been together, and it was the best six months of her life. Everything was finally
going right, falling into place, and with Luke by her side, she felt like she could accomplish anything and everything. Not too mention, he was such a great cook. The sun began to set and the party was over. Everyone said their goodbyes and dispersed for their cars. Zadie, her mother, and Luke stayed in the backyard and cleaned up the mess. “We got this, Mrs. Kade, you can go inside,” Luke said, as gentlemanly as possible. “Don’t be silly,” her mother replied, picking up trash from the yard. “I may be old, but I’m not dead. Yet.” Zadie laughed, and stopped as she looked to the gate swing open, and Brycin Blue was watching them. A big brown teddy bear in his arm. Roses in the other. He stepped forward cautiously. “You shouldn’t be here,” Zadie said, loudly. Luke and her mother turned to see who she was talking to. Luke dropped the trash bag in his hand, puffed out his chest, and looked Brycin straight in his eye. “Don’t bother the girl, man.” he said. “This isn’t your place,” Brycin told the younger man. “This is the mother of my daughter. We share something more than an English class in a rundown community college.” “Brycin,” Zadie uttered. Her blood already started to rise the moment she saw him. “It’s the truth,” Luke said, turning to her. “Just don’t hurt her.” he told Brycin before turning for the door. “I’ll check on Lydia.” Zadie nodded. “What do you want, Brycin?” she asked the fighter. “The party is over. You’re late. As usual. At least this time you managed to show up,” Zadie paced back and forth. She was so angry with him. She restrained from knocking him across the face.
“I tried to be here on time, I really did,” Brycin said, sincerely. But Zadie didn’t buy it. She believed squat that came out of his mouth. Why should she? He had given her every reason not to. “What?” Zadie snapped. “Did Lacy get bored of you already, huh?” “No,” Brycin muttered, the teddy bear in his hand slumped down. “I wanted to see my daughter, and you, that’s all.” he glanced at Zadie, then her mother, who shook her head and went inside behind Luke. “She’s sleeping,” Zadie said, arms crossed. A lightning bug floated right by her face. She could still smell the coals on the pit burning down. “Just for a little bit,” he asked her. “Please, Zadie.” Zadie shook her head stubbornly. She wasn’t going to allow it. Not right now. He couldn’t even show up on time for her first birthday party. “It’s not like you’ve been there for anything else,” Zadie said to him, “and now, because you feel like it, you want to see her?” Brycin nodded. “I want to give her my gifts.” He held the big teddy bear up and the dozen of roses. “You can put them on that table over there,” Zadie pointed at a plastic table with nothing but presents and bags sitting on the surface. “Zadie, please,” Brycin whispered. She had never heard him like that. She wondered what happened to him, but just like his feelings for them, she simply didn’t care enough to give a flying rats ass about what is going with him at the moment. She shook her head. “Come by tomorrow,” she said. “Not tomorrow,” he huffed. “Right now. I have time right now.” “And you didn’t have time that past year?” “I’m a busy man, Zadie. You know that,” Brycin
said, waving his arms around as he spoke to her. “So what? You’re going to replace with that wimp in there? That isn’t his daughter.” “He’s there for her like she is,” Zadie muttered, grinding her teeth. She didn’t realize it until she said it, but Luke was really there for her like a father. Brycin scoffed. “Yeah, right. So you just let any dick around our daughter then? Wow, Zadie, I see now.” He flung the roses at the ground. The teddy bear as well. He headed for the gate. “Just wait and see, Zadie. I’ll turn your life upside down. I promise you.” he slammed the gate behind him, peeling out in his sleek sports car, probably waking the neighbors in the process. Zadie stared at the dirty teddy bear. Did she do the right thing? She should have let him seen her. Why didn’t she? Because he didn’t deserve to. He cant just waltz in whenever he felt like being a father. She slowly trekked inside, her mind jumbled and tired. It was such a long day. She strolled by the living room and her mother sat in her usual chair, watching the nightly news. She walked to her bedroom, and as she pushed the door open, her heart stopped at what she saw. Luke stood there in the middle of her room, Lydia cradled in his arms, fast asleep. She smiled at the lovely sight. “You’re amazing,” she breathed to Luke, throwing herself on her bed. “How was the talk outside?” he asked her, laying Lydia in her crib gently, like he carried a bomb that could go off any minute. “He wanted to see her,” Zadie said, massaging her temples. “I told him no.” “That’s only right,” Luke reassured her. “He hasn’t been around for a year. And now he wants to see her?”
“I know,” Zadie said. “I don’t even know what to think about it anymore.” “Don’t,” Luke climbed in the bed beside her. “Just relax your mind, and know whatever you choose, I’m right behind you.” He gets behind her and starts rubbing down her shoulders. “Ito will work out, it always does.” “You’re right,” Zadie moaned, she loved his massages. They always put her mind at ease. No matter how her day was. She reclined back into his embrace. She could lay like that her entire lifetime and be happy, content. He made her beyond happy. “I’ll just worry about it tomorrow.” She undid the bed, getting under the covers beside Luke. She ran her hands up his hard and hairy thighs, until she wedged her fingers between his briefs, one hand on his soft member. They slept like this every night, and she wouldn’t trade it for anything. Luke and her daughter, the only two people she needed. And her old mother. Brycin could go jump off a cliff for all she cared, she was happy. And just like when he ignored the fact that she was pregnant, then ignored it when she was giving birth to their daughter, she was going to ignore him. She was going to worry about herself for a change, and do the things necessary in order for Lydia to be happy, because in the end, that is what made her happy. Zadie turned over, both of Luke’s arms around her, she felt safe, but most of all, she was pleased with the way things were. Withing moments, she was sound asleep, nestled between the arms of the man of her dreams.
