And we all know what that means for Phoenix and the surrounding areas. High winds, heavy rain, dust and plenty of thunder and lightning. On a rare occasion a severe storm can bring on a tornado, and downpours can result in flash floods, Monsoon season which generally runs from 4th of July to mid or late September, can cause damage to some of our belongings. Following some easy steps can help you protect your house. One way is to make sure all your outdoor furniture and fixtures are secured so they don’t blow into your house. Trees can also be a danger during
storms. Trimming all your trees prior to the storms coming can possibly help you avoid branches or limbs falling on your home or vehicle. Getting a quick inspection of wind-shield wipers, brakes, and lights on your car could greatly help you during a storm. If a thunder or dust storm starts and you are out and about, try to get indoors as soon as possible. And if you come upon a sign that says “Do Not Enter When Flooded” take the sign seriously and do not enter. Remember, a statute went into effect around 1995 in Arizona which is commonly known as the stupid motorist
law. You could be held financially responsible for the expenses incurred for emergency personnel to rescue you if you drive your vehicle into an area that you should have known was dangerous. If you are out driving and get caught in a storm and you do not feel comfortable driving, pull off to the side of the road as far to the right as possible, turn off your car, and lights and keep your foot off the brake pedal. Otherwise, drivers may come up behind you assuming that you are still in motion. And remember to keep flashlights, extra batteries and candles handy.

1.) Call your insurance company ASAP. Let them know the extent of the accident or storm related damage. Provide contact information on how you can be reached. 2.) Document your loss. Make a list and take pictures to substantiate your loss. 3.) If an auto-related loss, call the police to file a police report. Take pictures of damages to ALL vehicles and
exchange insurance information. Wait for the police to arrive before you move your vehicle. 4.) If a storm-related loss, make temporary repairs to prevent additional damage. 5.) If a storm-related loss, and you can’t live in your home for a period of time, keep receipts for additional living expenses.
6.) Be Organized! Make a list of damages, expenses, and contacts.
