TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ST. NICHOLAS PARISH From the Pastor’s Desk This week the new academic school year officially begins. This is great news for many parents and secretly for many of our students. Summer was fun but it is time to get back to the business of education. We have had numerous projects taking place at our Main Street campus of Bishop Fenwick that have been successfully completed for our new school year. We are excited about all the good work that has taken place in remodeling and refurbishing our building. Today we have an open house at the Main Street campus of Bishop Fenwick School from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. You are most welcome to come up and visit and see for yourself the improvements to our school facilities. Good things are happening! Bishop Fenwick Preschool is one of those Shining Stars in our community. At the writing of this column we have 63 students registered. Tremendous things are happening with our Preschool program. We have a great staff and an exciting program. God has Blessed Us! With the help of some grants, much has also taken place at the Bishop Rosecrans High School Campus. This summer the parking lot was repaved and striped. The finishing touches have been made on the construction of a new Home Field Stadium for the Bishops. Lights, bleachers, score board and press box have been completed and we are ready to go. This is a great addition. Now we have a home field with the hopeful home field advantage. Note well: Starting Wednesday August 30, we will return to our school year schedule for Wednesday morning Mass. Wednesday morning Mass will be at 8:10 a.m. As you may be aware since you have received a “robocall” from St. Nicholas this summer, we are putting together a new Parish Pictorial Directory. The last directory for the parish happened about twelve years ago. I don’t know about you, but I did find this directory helpful, especially when I was transferred to the parish eight years ago. It is always a challenge to put names and faces together. So many people, names, families, individuals… at times I find it particularly difficult to keep it all straight, especially since I have been assigned to seven different parishes over the last thirty-three years and have met literally thousands of people. At times I may recognize some faces, and other times I am not sure who and from where I know them. This happens when I see people in places where I am not accustomed to seeing them; like the grocery store or pharmacy. It takes me a minute to go through the old computer files of my mind. Nevertheless, a current Parish Pictorial Directory is a rather handy reference tool to build familiarity with names and faces. So far we have about fifty families who have scheduled their family photo for the new Parish Pictorial Directory. To make this thing work right we need at least 200 more families to call and make an appointment for their family photo. That may sound like a lot of people but believe me we have more than enough families to surpass the needed 250 families to make this directory a successful parish project. With the new directory you will be able to match names and faces as well as count the number of families in our parish. (Hint: it’s close to a thousand families). So far in the course of scheduling times for families to have their photo taken we had discovered a couple things to help us update our parish files. One of those things that have surfaced through this process of planning a new directory is the need for continuous updating of our parish census. We have quickly become aware of changes of address for many of our parishioners.
If you have recently had a change of address please let the parish office know. If you are not registered in the parish, now is a good time to do so. If you did not receive the “robocall” from St. Nicholas Church about the new Parish Pictorial Directory, you may not be registered. If you did not receive a parish mailing advertising the new Parish Pictorial Directory, you may not be registered. If you do not receive parish offertory envelopes, you may not be registered. Please, please, please contact the office and update or register your parish membership. Concerning parish registrations, there seems to be some confusion about parish membership. It is advisable for all Catholic Christians to register at their local Catholic Church. It has occurred that there are many individuals who have moved away from Zanesville and still claim St. Nicholas as their parish. They may not have been here or attend Sunday Mass in years. Regretfully St. Nicholas is no longer their parish. It may be their “home parish” but this is merely an indication of where someone grew up etc. My home parish is St. Sabina Church in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. St. Nicholas is my parish. If someone has moved away and has subsequently returned to the area, that individual is most likely not currently registered in the parish. It is time to reregister. Another concern has to do with a case where family members have moved away to another town and their parents are still parishioners at St. Nicholas. This does not mean that those who have moved away are still considered registered parishioners. The current parish where they now live becomes their parish and they should register and practice the faith at that parish where they now live. This is particularly important since many of these individuals are asked to be godparents for Baptisms or sponsors for Confirmation. They will need a letter from their parish with their Pastor’s signature validating that they are a registered and practicing Catholic. One does not need to be a scholar to notice the lack of validity when an individual living in Alabama presents a letter from a parish in Zanesville, Ohio declaring the individual is a registered and practicing parishioner. Out of respect, one should not ask anyone much less a parish priest to put their signature on such a document. A painful and awkward discussion takes place when I receive such a request for a letter validating a parishioner’s status as registered and practicing the faith when the individual is not registered or no longer lives in the parish. I am expected to put my signature on a document that I cannot verify as a fact. I don’t want to sound petty about this, but I get these requests all the time and it gets wearisome. Parish Registration is very important. When parishioners move away, it is important to register in the local Catholic Parish in your new location. This request is not something that is ridiculous or unreasonable. It is a simple little item that carries a great deal of weight. It is a matter of keeping reasonable standards for all Catholics. Sometimes the response in requesting individuals to register with their local Catholic parish is consistent with asking them to do something unreasonable, impossible or burdensome. This is simple. We can do this. It is reasonable. It is consistent. Back to the task at hand, please call the parish office during regular office hours: Monday-Thursday 8:30 a.m.-5:00p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and make your appointment to have your family photo taken for the New Parish Pictorial Directory. Looking forward to matching names and faces. Have a blessed week. Father Ralko
