ST. NICHOLAS PARISH From the Pastor’s Desk This weekend we welcome Father Lazarus Langbiir, C.S.Sp for this year’s Mission Appeal on behalf of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit; the Spiritans. Father Lazarus will be speaking at all the masses this weekend about the missionary work of the Spiritans. This visit is part of a national program whereby annually a representative from a missionary group visits parishes in our diocese as well as dioceses throughout the country. The Spiritans are an international community engaged in a wide range of missionary activity in many areas of the world. Fr. Lazarus himself is from Ghana. He ministers in a parish in Pittsburgh staffed by the Spiritans while pursuing a Ph.D. at Duquesne University. Welcome Fr. Lazarus. A huge heartfelt Thank You goes out to all who worked so hard to make this year’s parish festival a big success. There were numerous individuals who stepped up to prepare and serve food and drinks. We thank all who sold tickets and manned booths. Thanks go out to all who ran children games (and adult games), who provided support as well at set-up and cleanup activities. Thanks go out to all who spent time and energy in planning and executing those plans for the smooth running of the parish festival. In general a huge thanks for all who pitched in to make this year’s parish festival a great success. Lastly, we thank all who attended this year’s event. All the hard work would have been for naught if there were no attendees benefitting from all the planning and execution of this year’s parish festival. We had good crowds enjoying themselves. Nevertheless, there is no way that we could mention and thank all who worked this year but in short… God Bless all the wonderful people for their hard work, creativity, thoughtfulness, and imagination in doing things, great and small, to make the festival an enjoyment of all. It appears that this is the last full week of summer vacation for our students. Our teachers have been working on their classrooms in preparation for the new school year. As happens every summer we experience a number of changes in staff and students. We have teachers taking other jobs and we hire new teachers in their place. We have a number of students whose families move from the area and we have new families who move into the area and register their children in our school. We had a number of students graduate and we welcome first time families to the school whose children enter pre-school and kindergarten. Changes take place with the summer months and we adjust accordingly. Nothing stays the same, nor should it. The numbers for the school are solid and that is a good thing. Our pre-school on the other hand is experiencing growth in numbers. We have a great pre-school program and the word is spreading. Good things are happening. Nevertheless to paraphrase the words of St. Benedict: growth is change. To be perfect is to change often. Our sincerest desire is that we experience change as we grow in the goodness of God in all that we do and that our children develop in knowledge and faith. We are making every effort to make that happen with the Grace of God.
Tomorrow, Monday, August 15 is the celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a Holy Day. However, in all the Dioceses of Ohio the obligation to attend mass is lifted since the holy day is on a Monday. Nevertheless, we will observe the Holy Day with the celebration of the Eucharist at our regular morning mass at 8:00 a.m. Mass for the Holy Day is also available at St. Thomas Aquinas at their regular Monday morning times of 8:00 and noon. For those who attend morning mass during the week please note that there will not be a morning mass on Tuesday. I need to make a quick overnight trip to Detroit. This is the last week of Summer Vacation for most of our students. There will be an Open House at the school next Sunday, August 21st after the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses. There should be an announcement elsewhere in this bulletin with further details. The first day of school will be next Tuesday, August 23. The first school mass will be Wednesday the 24th at 8:10 a.m. During the school year the Wednesday morning mass will return to 8:10 a.m. Where did the summer go? Have a great week. Father Ralko

AUGUST 14, 2016 WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP The Women’s Spirituality Group will resume meeting on September 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the Parish Office Building. This year we will be discussing Pope Francis’ book The Holy Year of Mercy. We are taking orders for the book until September 1. CHANGE IN TV MASS BROADCAST TIMES The Diocese of Columbus’ Sunday TV Mass, airing on WHIZ-TV, will be shown at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, 14 and 21. The Mass will revert to its regular 10:30-11:00 a.m. time slot on Sunday, Aug. 28. This temporary change was necessitated by the NBC network’s pre-emption of local programming because of coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on those dates. PRINCIPAL’S PASTA DINNER AT ROSECRANS Friday, September 2, 2016, Rosecrans High School Principal Jenifer Mallett will host a "Principal’s Pasta Dinner" to raise funds for art supplies, internet connectivity, and science materials for the high school. Dinner will be in Dury Hall starting at 5:00 p.m. (early enough to go watch our football team play later that night!) cost is $5.00 per person. Dinner includes salad, pasta, desert, and drink.
