Calculating your Electrical BillWe get our electricity from Central Maine power Company.
They charge us for the use of the power lines and maintaining
them (This is called a delivery charge)
They also charge us per kilowatt hour that we use.
A kilowatt hour = 1000 watts per hour.
One 100 watt light bulb operating for TEN hours would consume 1 kilowatt hour
or a thousand watts of power.
100 X 10 = 1000watts
CMP's delivery price is 5.8¢ per kwh used
Charge per Kilowatt hour 8.9¢ per kwh
So if we add the two together our total charge per kilowatt hour is
16 cents.
So our 100 watt light bulb running for 10 hours = 1000 watts. The cost of
running this bulb for ten hours then will be 16 cents.
Lets try a few examples
We have to know three things in order to calculate electrical use cost.
1. Cost of the electricity 16 cents per kilowatt hour
2. Number of hours you are using the electrical device
And
3. How many watts it consumes
We run a 1200 watt heater for 8 hours …. What is the cost?
Step 1 HOURS X WATTS
Step 2 Answer from 1 DIVIDED BY 1000
Step 3 Answer from 2 X .16
8 X 1200 = 9600 9600 / 1000 = 9.6 9.6 X 16 cents = $1.54
So our cost for running the 1200 watt heater for 8 hours is $1.54
Try these 5
1. Run the 1200 watt Air conditioner for 12 hours.
2. Leave a 100 watt light bulb on for three 12 hour days.
3. You pumped out the swimming pool for 18 hours using an 800 watt
pump.
4. Ran the 600 watt weed trimmer for 2 hours.
