Are gouworkinghardor workingsmaft? jn relation Theword"Smart", to modern (smart electronic applications lD cards, smartkidsetc.)and eventhe automotive (smartcars),is closely industry "convenient", associated withimages suchas "advanced", and"highquality of life".Suchaspects areclosely in tunewithDragon's newspecialized seriesof model kits. Pasttrendsin modelkitshavegiventhe priority to detailandaccuracy. The typical approach of mostkitmanufacturers isto breakalltheirassemblies down into dozensof tiny components, regardless of the complexity neededto assemble them,lt is alsoa factthatDragon's kitsarelauded theworldoverfor theiramount of detailandtheirwiseapplication of technology. Yet,withmuch goingonaboutaccuracy vigorous debate anddetails, somemodelers seemto haveoverlooked theimportance oftheengineering aspect ofmodel kits.Thefact isthata cleverly designed kitwillnotonlyreachthesamedesired levelof detail andaccuracy, butwillalsomakeit a joyto build. A better-looking kitwithfewer parts...imagine that! "Workhardor worksmart", Thesaying, definitely applies here, withDragon's engineers having cleverly developed a kitthatwillmakethemodeler's lifea lot simpler. Wecallthisseries theSmartKit,because it is a customized solution especially engineered to makebuilding easier andmorefun, without sacrificing anyqualityin the endproduct! Dragon's enormous expertise in designand engineering is producing parts, making moreadvanced kitswithlessindividual themimmensely simpler andfaster toassemble. Takingmodelkit designin a wholenewdirection, Dragonhasdeveloped a specialized lineofkititems thatfocuses onhighquality, easybuildassembly, and bestof all, unprecedented valueforthecustomer. Thesekitssetsthemselves apartfromourregular newitemsbecause of thevastamount of development timeandengineering effort thatisputintothem.Theendresult isa special blend offeatures formodeling convenience andvalue: I Enhancedplasticparts.Dragon's engineers haveworkedhardat producing partsin plastic. finelyanddelicately detailed Inthesekits, metalpartsarea necessity! r Offerunprecedented value.Kitengineering reflects thewantsand needsof modelers, withtheresearch teamstepping intothe modeler's shoes.Kitscostlessbecause extraneous metalpartsare - butat thesametimetheyoffer"value-added notincluded detail" because of theirinclusion of highqualityparts. I Caterfor modelerswho likebuildingOOTB(outof the box). Countless hoursarenotgoingto be wastedworking on weldseams or carryingout plasticsurgerytechniques! Thesekitsare readyto be builtas soonas theboxlidis opened. Of course. thosewholove metalpartscanstilladdmulti-media partsas theywish. I Greaterenjoymentfor the modeler.SmartKitsaredesignedto satisfy! Engineers haveonegoalin mind, andthatis to designgreat kitsthatarea sheerjoyto build.Modeling willbe straightforward and fast, notbecause it is a "simplekit",butbecause it is a SmartKit!

Yet, that's exactlywhat Dragon'sM1 designteam gets to do.
Submariners are fond of saying, "Up periscopel"Now modelersof Dragon's new M1 Abrams can happily say, "Throughperiscope!"Say what? Well, let us explain.
Of course they do a lot more than this, but it's well worth pausingto considerthe hubs of the Abrams' road wheels.A careful examinationof these items reveals somethingquite surprising- they'reall transparent!Hard to believe, huh! But pleasetake it from us - they'remade of transparentplastic so that crews can easilycheck the level of the lubricating oilin thewheels.
On the Commander's Weapons Station(CWS)on the Abrams'turretis a vision block, just forward of the commander'shatch. lf you look at any existingkit of thisvisionblock, you'llfind it has been treated as a standard oeriscooe. But this is far from the case. Insteadif you look at the real tank, or at Dragon'sastoundingnew 1/35kit, you'llfind thal whilethis periscopecan be used in the standardfashion,it also has transparentglass on the rearand frontfaces. This is so the commandercan see directlythroughthe visionblock when he's lookingfrom a positionstandingin his hatch. Therefore, this vision block has been made of transparentplasticin Dragon'skit. The transparentglass partsare carefully marked so that modelerscan paint the correct parts to get an authentictransparent periscope! You can see straightthroughthis 1/35scale periscope, just like the original.
That's why you'll find the road wheels on Dragon's new M1A1 AIM were designed with separate hub covers made from clear plastic!Firsttime ever this detail's appeared in a 1i35 scale Abramskit.Clearly- the bestAbramskit ever!!!
Now, all modelershavethe chanceto take a lookthroughthe Abramsperiscope!

Before the Abram'senginecover is removed,thereare five additionalpanelsthat need to be opened first. A photo of maintenancecrew working on an Abrams engine will revealthis to be true. Sincethis was destinedto be the world'sbest 1:35Abramskit,we neededfive separatepanelstool So that'swhat modelersget in the kit. For the firsttime ever, modelerscan do a maintenancescene with all the covers and panels correctlydepictedand removed just waitingfor a new TextronLycoming A G T 1 5 0 0g a st u r b i n ep o w e rp a c kt o b e d r o p p e di n ! Now you don't need to cut the deck . . . because we've alreadycarefullyshuffledit for you! There is a problem with every Abrams kit producedso far - everysingleone of them has an inaccurateengine deck. Therefore,wrth the new A b r a m s M 1 A 1 A l M , w e t h o u g h ti t w a s t i m e t o shufflethe deck - so to speak!On the real vehicle, thereare four mesh panelshingedto the T-shaped engine cover. When the engine cover is raised, thesefour oanelsmust be removedwith it . . . and s o t h a t ' sw h a t w e d i d o n D r a g o n ' sM l A 1 . W h e n modelers want to depict a power pack being removed, for example, it's easy because the enginecover and four mesh panels(yes,they do include photo-etchedmesh) are made as one piece.But that'sjust one ace on the top of our deck - we have more tricksuo our sleevestoo.

Did you knowthat the side skirtson an M1A1Abramstank are.justlike people?lt's true some are thick, and some are thin!Only the forwardskirtsof the M1A1 are composed of ballisticChobhamcompositearmor, while the rearwardones are manufacturedfrom thinnersheetsof steel. Even moreinterestingis the fact that on the rightside of the tank, the firstfour skirtsuse the thickercompositearmor, while on the left side, only the first two dol So why should that be? In fact,it's both simpleand logical. On the rightside of the Abramshull, behind the turret,is a smallammunitioncompartmentthat holds several120mmroundsfor the maingun. To minimizethe riskof thesestoredammo roundsbeinghit by hostilefire, the designersthereforeaddedgreaterarmorprotectionon the rightside via theseextended ballisticside skirts. You'dneverrealizeall this by lookingat any contemporary1/35 kit of the Abrams, sinceall manufacturers show the side skirtsas havinga uniformthickness. With its superlativeM1A1 Allvl kit, however, DML createsa convincingand totallyaccurate reoresentationof these side skirts. Some are thick, and some a r e t h i n !W h y n o t take a look under its skirts to check for yourself?!

Likeotheraircraftof itstime,theP-51D Mustang is covered byflush rivetsandpanellines. However, assmoothasthebodyandlaminar flow airfoilswere, suchdetailscouldstill be seenon the aircraft itself, and Dragon'sdesigners feel that such a prevalent feature shouldnotbeomittedandmustberepresented by thekit. However, dueto toolingmethod andlimitations, details represented willseem relatively exaggerated whenviewedin its "sprue.form". Fortunately, aswithallkits, layersof primer, paint, andcoatingwill beappliedon product, thefinished andthemodeler willhavecomplete freedom as how to muchdetailto showbycontrolling theamount applied onthe surface.
