WINDOWS
atural light coming from a window is my absolute favourite light to shoot with. A similar effect can be achieved with a very large softbox but it’s very hard to match the beauty of the light from a large window. Depending on which direction the window faces and what time of day you are shooting, the lighting effect can vary dramatically. A south facing window (in the southern hemisphere) will produce a very soft, less directional light which can wrap beautifully around a nude figure giving soft open shadows. Alternatively, a north facing window will give a more directional light with harsher, sharper shadows. An east or west facing window can produce either a soft or harsh light depending on the time of day of the shoot.
CANDACE NIRVANA MOFFATT HEADLAND These images come from the second half of my first shoot with Candace in 2008. After we finished shooting in the State Forest, we continued up the coast to one of my favourite spots. The headland at Moffatt Beach in Caloundra has some of the most unique rocks that I’ve found in South East Queensland and they are also pretty easy to get to. This area is only really accessible at low tide however and there is also the chance of being interrupted by people walking around the headland depending on the time and day of the week. Equipment: Nikon D3 / AFS Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 ED
ANNA Gorgeous big windows, old wood floor boards and a lovely nude model, nothing makes me happier. I’ve shot in this studio numerous times and I always manage to get different results depending on the time of day and the weather conditions. Anna isn’t a model, she’s actually a trained actress, but she was more than happy to do some art nude modelling for me in this warehouse studio location in Brisbane. We only worked together on two occasions and I do wish there were more but I’m very appreciative of the time and effort Anna gave me and proud of the images we created. Equipment: Nikon D3 / AFS Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 ED
ROMAHNI ROSE Romahni is another Melbourne based model who I was lucky enough to work with in 2013 when I was visiting for a photography conference. As it quite often is in Melbourne, it was overcast, dull and rainy on the day we arranged to shoot so my hotel room was the obvious place to spend the afternoon. I wasn’t at all upset by this prospect however as the room had a gorgeous big window with a sheer curtain which provided very beautiful soft light. I could shoot across the front of the window and introduce some shadows or shoot straight back into the window for a softer, more high key look. Romahni was an real pleasure to work with and the time flew by. She is now semi-retired from modelling but I do hope I get the opportunity to work with her again sometime. Equipment: Nikon D4 / AF Nikkor 50mm f1.4D / AF Nikkor 85mm f1.4D Pentax 6x7 / Pentax 105mm f2.4
ANNE DUFFY On one of Anne’s trips to Brisbane in 2012, she stayed in a hotel room in the city which happened to have floor to ceiling high windows and a great shear curtain. This provided Anne the perfect place to pose. It’s this type of situation where a models posing skills really make the difference. With a less experienced model and without a lot of direction, it would have been difficult to get any real variety in the images. Anne was able to work her posing in with the curtain and provide me a range of images different enough so the set doesn’t start to become boring. Equipment: Nikon D4 / AF Nikkor 50mm f1.4D / AF Nikkor 85mm f1.4D
LARA This set of images of Lara was shot in the same warehouse studio as the set with Anna. A different day meant different light but I also shot some different angles and directions. This set comes from fairly early on in my artistic nude photography career, way back in 2008 and Lara was an amateur model who preferred to stay anonymous for most of the work she did. Lara had an incredible figure for artistic nude work and it was great experience for me to shoot her in such a way as to keep her face from being highlighted but to work the light across her body. The result was some beautiful images which I still look back on very fondly. Equipment: Nikon D3 / AF Nikkor 85mm f1.4D / AFS Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 ED
TALIAH CAMPBELL The most recent set in this issue, these images of Taliah were shot in November, 2015 when I was in Sydney to run one of my Art of Nude Photography workshops. Taliah contacted me through Model Mayhem and was keen to do a shoot to help develop her portfolio. As I was going to be in Sydney the following week, I jumped at the chance to work with her. Although these images don’t show it, Taliah is a trained dancer so that’s the style of images she gets asked to model for quite often. I decided to give her something different to what she already had in her portfolio and opted for some nude portraits in the beautiful windows of Studio 501 in Sydney. Equipment: Fuji X-T1 / Fuji XF 56mm f1.2 R
