STUDENT GROUP GRANT APPLICATION FORM Name of Applicant: Name of Group/Organization: Event/Initiative: UWO Email: Date of Application Submission:
Linda (Yining) Fei Free the Children Western Western Mini We Day
[email protected] December 7th, 2015
Please answer the following questions and submit any other information/documentation that you feel would be of importance. 1. Describe the event /initiative for which you are requesting the SSC Student Group Grant. The event will take place on January 29th from 1:30pm - 4:30pm. We are inviting a keynote speaker, as well as 3 other guest speakers from various non-profit organizations to share their stories and help to inspire others. We are also hosting performers/ entertainers such as dancers, singers, etc. to attract students to attend this motivational event. We believe the Science Group Grant should help fund this event so that we can help finance having incredible speakers to share their stories to hopefully inspire Western students to get more involved in the community and make a change in the world. The keynote speaker that we have in mind, Spencer West, is willing to share his inspirational story about conquering Mount Kilimanjaro while living with disabilities. To bring him to our Mini We Day, as well as other presenters, requires the necessary funding to make it a memorable event for all those involved.
2. How do you see this event /initiative being beneficial to your group or to the community? Our Mini We Day will influence students on a variety of levels, whether it be academically, emotionally, politically or entertainmentassociated. Academically speaking, students will take the message and significance from We Day and incorporate it into their own lives. Our Mini We Day is an outlet students can use in order to become their own agents of change, not only academically but on a broader platform as well. Through attending Free the Children Western’s Mini We Day, students are encouraged to look at the world differently and to be confident in their own abilities. Along with this, the actual content of our We Day showcases many issues currently manifesting across the globe, such as child soldiers (our main point of interest during our Mini We Day).
3. What are the costs associated with the execution of this event /initiative? (If you have an associated budget, please attach it). The funds from the SSC grant are needed to cover the costs of paying the keynote speaker and covering their travel expenses. The money will also go towards printing tickets, paying for the venue (Western Film), and providing food, water, and a small thank you gift for the speakers. Currently, these costs total $7,500 (the keynote speaker will cost $6,500 plus an additional $1000 in marketing and entertainers). We will contribute to the cost through our fundraising initiatives. We plan to sell Free the Children merchandise and T-shirts (designed by Western students) and through ticket sales.
4. How much financial assistance are you hoping to receive from the Science Students’ Council Student Group Grant? We hope to receive $3000 in support of this year’s event. Keynote speakers of a high caliber are expensive, thus putting us in a tough dilemma. The correlation between great speakers and a high audience turnout is evident, making it difficult to prioritize and strike a balance. Our contingency plan for our financial situation is simply to run the event on as low of a budget as possible, while creating a pleasant and purposeful experience for our audience members. We have taken time aside to assess our resources and purchase items that are of utmost necessity, as opposed to things that are not integral to running the event.
