Biography of Alice Walker Early life Alice Walker was born on February 9, 1944, in Eatonton, Georgia. Alice has a permanent injury in her right eye—shot by a BB pellet. She attended segregated schools, and went to Spleman College, where she participated in the civil rights movement. She involved as an activist who spoke for women rights , antiapartheid and against female genital mutilation movements.

Alice’s parents were sharecropper who worked hard to support her and her 7 siblings. After she grew up, she married Melvyn Rosenman Leventhal, a white civil rights lawyer. They became the first legally married interracial couple in Mississippi.
