DRIVER/PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS Forklifts are a large part of any industrial operation and can potentially cause serious injuries. Just because you are not driving a forklift it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to be concerned with forklift safety. Most forklift safety training concentrates on the drivers, with good cause. They are the ones who are moving the heavy and sometimes awkward loads through aisles, around corners and lifting at height. The following tips are meant to raise the awareness of pedestrians & Drivers Establish eye contact with the forklift driver and wait till they have stopped moving and put the hand brake on before you approach them. Keep a safe distance from the forklift and pay attention. NEVER assume the forklift driver knows that you are there. Make yourself known to the driver. Watch out for the tail swing when the forklift turns. Stay clear of the fall zone, this is a full circle around the truck, equal to twice the carried load. If mirrors are installed at corners make sure you check them. If there are no mirrors installed be very cautious when coming around a corner Never walk under the raised forks of a forklift; even when empty the forks could fall without warning. Make sure that you use designated walkways. Always wear high visibility clothing in areas where fork lift trucks operate. (Vest, Coats, Bump Caps) Remember that it is easy to become immune to the dangers of working around a forklift. With all of the noises that can occur during a work shift, back up and warning sounds can blend in with everything else. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch where you are going. I the undersigned have read and understood the above briefing. Print: ……………………………………….. Signature………………………………….. Driver – Pedestrian Awareness July 2017
