Important information to note when interpreting face to face You are to convert an expression in a source language into an expression with a comparable meaning in a target language in "real time". The interpreter's function is to convey every nuance. Nuance: - a very slight difference in meaning, sound, colour or somebody's feelings that is not usually very obvious for example; He watched her face intently to catch every nuance of expression. Her singing has both warmth of sound and delicacy of nuance. As above, you need to be able to convey the subtle nuances of meaning of each word.
It is essential that you arrive 15 minutes prior to the appointment time. If you think you may be delayed or late, you must phone our office in advance so that we can notify the client ourselves of you expected time of arrival. Dress smartly and professionally. Carry with you the Language Empire notebook and a pen. When starting the session PLEASE SWITCH YOUR MOBILE OFF OR ON SILENT. Please DO NOT answer a mobile phone call during an Interpretation Session. Act in a professional manner towards all the people with whom you come in contact. Maintain an impartial role between the organisation and the individual(s) ensuring you interpret everything that is said 100% accurately. Do not add to, omit from or change anything that is said, and do not offer your own advice or opinions. Do not enter into any private conversation with either party. Please do not arrange a substitute or replacement interpreter. If you are unable to attend personally as agreed, phone our office as early as possible to inform us. Anything discussed during an interpreting session remains entirely confidential, and details must not be disclosed to anyone outside of the session. If you are acquainted with the non-English person you are interpreting for, or know them in any way personally, you must inform the service user before the interpreting session commences. Before starting, briefly explain to each party how the interpreting process will be conducted. Say that your role is to be impartial and that you will interpret using words like I or we or you (not He says..., She thinks...). Ask speakers to speak in only one sentence at a time. Intervene courteously if necessary to ensure that the interpreting process is effective (ask for repetition or clarification or ask for shorter sections).
Please note you are NOT authorised to carry out the following additional work; 1. Translate a document in writing from your native language into English or vice versa. 2. Verbally translate a document for example statement / medical report / medical leaflet from your native language into English or vice versa. Interpreters must not translate a document whether it is in writing or verbally on site, unless authorised by Language Empire (LE). For example, if you try to verbally translate a medical report from English or into English directly to the Non-English speaker or the service user for example the Dr, then should any professional negligence claim be made against LE, the interpreter will be held responsible. Any written documents should be sent to LE for them to be translated by the particular organisation requiring the verbal or written translation of the document.
