EDITORIAL During the last week of March, we began to field test a modernized electrosparking machine. The delay with the actual planned schedule amounts to something like two weeks, which leaves a lot of room for optimism, especially with respect to the Fw 190A in 1/48th scale, which will not be affected by the small delay. For now. It’s not out of the woods just yet, because the second phase of our modernisation plans involves a new CNC machine which will complement existing pieces of equipment.
Modernized electrosparking machine.
The process of installing new machines, and rearranging the shop to optimum space usage, will require several days, if not weeks, meaning that some form of delay may still manifest itself. We’ll see. Our goal as it stands now is to have the first versions of the Fw 190, the A-3 and A-4, ready by the end of the summer and the first of the A-4s introduced and sold at E-day. If it all works as it should, the A-4 will become one of the highlights of this year’s show. There is another variant of this plan that would have the A-4 ready and for sale at the IPMS Nationals in July, but that’s not all that likely. I see it more as a September event, if not October. If it does happen in September, it will be an officially new item for October. The other hero of E-day will be ‘Manak Express’, the Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib, also in 1/48th scale. Although putting this kit together doesn’t really require our machinery to make it happen, it has churned up the waters of excitement, not unlike the
waters of the canal that Manak set his TP-N onto. The excitement is being played out in the generally quiet offices of our research department, where, unavoidably, storms can churn up the waters from time to time. As it at one time appeared, it would not be possible to make TP-N from the Hasegawa kit, because it lacked the antenna mast and had a modified rear canopy section. However, it now appears that this was not entirely the case, and that the rear canopy section was basically standard and that the modifications that caused the absence of the mast, a production batch to which TP-N belonged, was in fact mounted, but not until the fall of 1943. By that time, Manak had been brooding at Colditz for some time. Incidentally, that is a nice area, and I plan to visit there in September for a bit of inspiration. Well, we are not going to make any more changes. We will make the new canopy section, use it for other interesting aircraft, and Manak’s will be of the mor traditional type. All’s well that ends well. Either way, the legend of Mr. Manak has engraved itself well on every Czech modeller, and this year’s E-day will be a testament to that fact. Another Czech legend had its premier at the first big show of the season, Panthers Cup at Prosek in Prague, in the form of the Avia B.534 I and II Series, in this case 1/72nd scale. It is officially an April release, and it is going on sale now. It also is a reflection of the modernisation programme going on here, and can be taken to a point as a technology demonstrator. We used the new technology to test the procedure for the simulation of the strips covering stitching lines on fabric covered aircraft. This is first and foremost applicable to biplanes, but in any scale it is a very delicate detail, the execution of which has come under increasing criticism. We think that with the representation of the fabric covered aircraft now, we are on the right road to further progress allowing
a more subtle rendition of fine details that represents less than 0.03mm in relief. Going by initial reaction by reviewers and modellers alike, it looks like this procedure is on the road to widespread acceptance. I for one am quite impressed, and we will continue down this road. Whew!! As we prepared the new Avia, we changed a list of details as well that, going by criticism, were in need of improvement. The most significant of these are the outline of the nose, but we also modified the method of placing the wing struts which now aren’t even practically necessary to be glued in place. Parts that do not require glue are plenty in this kit, but it is a phenomenon that is not unheard of in some of our previous kits. This new Avia kit can be taken as a demonstration of what our kits will look like in the future. It’s well worth it and goes together like a dream. The official name of the kit is Avia B.534 Early Series and is being released as a Dual Combo ProfiPack kit, meaning it contains enough parts to build one I. Series and one II. Series model. The thinking behind this boxing was that although it is a somewhat peripheral version of this undeniably famous, and for Czechoslovak history, significant, type. It is our assumption that interest outside of the Czech and Slovak cultural sphere will not be particularly overwhelming, and this kit will grab the attention of mostly Czechoslovak Air Force enthusiasts. They would likely end up getting both types anyway, and there is no need to clog up the marketplace with what are two very similar kits. Furthermore, two kits in one box is more practical from a production standpoint, but the Weekend editions will see these split up into two separate kits. The same goes for the popular OVERTREES, which will also be separated into two. There will be a third OVERTREES offered, that of the sprues containing the wings, and this is because the wings can easily be retrofitted to the III. and IV. Series kits, and if anyone wants to upgrade their kit, they have that option. I would just add that the Avia B.534 in this scale will be topped off in July with the Bk.534 version, which is among other things, the first model to go through after the above mentioned electrosparking machine upgrades.

INFO Eduard - April 2017
Another 1/72nd scale item is being released with a distinct Czechoslovak flavour. The HIND/Mi-24 in Czech and Slovak service in Limited Edition is not new, but rather a reedition of a kit released in October of last year, when it sold out very quickly. The initial production run of 1,500 kits was evidently underestimated and overly limited, and we decided to rectify this oversight, based on some market research, by issuing another, and final, 1,000 kits. This edition will be identical to the first, including the price. In 1/48 scale, we’ve got the Bf 109F-2 as a ProfiPack release. Many shrug off this kit as just another of too many ‘109’ s, but I wouldn’t be quite so dismissive of this Friedrich and give it a deserved closer look. Just the decal options alone deserve attention, and these were again picked with emphasis on striking aircraft in their appearance and in their operational usage. Also worth mention is the boxart of Adam Tooby. Adam will continue creating for Eduard and together with the involvement of Piotr Forkasziewicz will ensure a positive evolution of Eduard boxart. The fourth and final item among model kits that are being released in April is the Fokker F.1 triplane in 1/48th scale. This is a Weekend Edition kit. The F.1 represents the three piece predecessor to the famous Fokker Dr.I, from which it differs in a number of construction details. The marking options cover two of three built aircraft. Given the fact that all preceding kits of Eduard released Fokker Dr.Is in 1/48th scale are at the moment sold out, the F.I will, for some time, be the only representative of the Fokker triplanes in our 48th scale catalogue. Turning our attention to accessory kits, as has become the standard norm, we are releasing masks and photoetching for the Bf 109F-2 in 1/48th. Within the new Brassins, you will note the new BigSin dedicated to the Bf 109F. Getting back to masks, the

bulk of these cover the Ki-61-Id in 1/48th for the Tamiya kit, the 1/48th scale Su34 from Trumpeter and Special Hobby’s 1/32nd Tempest Mk.II. The same can be said with respect to photoetching. Those are further complemented by sets covering the 1/48th scale H-21C, known as the Flying Banana, from Italeri, in 1/72nd, the Dornier Do 17Z-2 from ICM and Special Hobby’s Mirage F.1B. Photoetching for armour in 1/35th scale covers the new Tamiya M-40, and another two sets are designed for ships covering the USS Iwo Jima LHD-7 in 1/350th (Trumpeter). The ZOOM sets, as is typical, mirror their bigger, expanded counterparts, and besides that, I would like to also point out the new steel seatbelts, also derived from previously released larger (and I might add successful) sets. This time around, there are only three Big Ed sets, two of which are devoted to the 1/48th Tamiya F-14A and the first of two sets for the B-17E/F by HKM in 1/32nd scale. The last Brassins to mention I left for the 1/48th scale F-4J by Zoukei Mura, exhausts for the
Tamiya F-14A in 1/48th, Ki-61 exhausts from the same company and scale, and also weapons bays for the Spitfire Mk.IXc in 1/72nd by us. Also covered are engine covers for the Spitfire Mk.VIII and Mk.XVI in 1/72nd, also for the Eduard kits, and the port engine for the Mosquito in 1/32nd for the Tamiya kit. There are also further sets in both 1/72nd and 1/48th scale covering missiles and bombs. And that would be about all for today. We’ll see you at Moson, and those who can not make it will have a chance at the internet afterparty. Pleas note that our web pages are not behaving as they should since the last updates. Sometimes, progress can be a one step forward and two steps back affair...not to mention what that does to the streamlining of use. Our provider keeps reassuring us that it is our own fault! Happy Modeling Vladimir Sulc
