ALCOBAÇA Alcobaça is known for its principal attraction, the Abbey of Santa Maria (1). Founded in 1153 to commemorate a victory against the Moors, it was finally completed in 1223. It is now Portugal's largest church, and one of the country’s outstanding architectural monuments. The regal donations received over the course of various reigns led to the creation of the estates of Alcobaça - vast territorial domains that were populated and cultivated by the monks, who founded there an agricultural school. The bus station (2) has also international service to/from Spain,
France, and
Switzerland.
