ecently I visited a toy-fair held in my local centre, as being a bit nostalgic I hoped to see some of the bits and pieces from my formative years! Thankfully I was not disappointed, as there were an array of Corgi, Dinky and Matchbox cars, including the still fabulous James Bond Aston Martin, and plenty of Action Man memorabilia to be seen. However, most of my time was spent chatting to a particular stallholder who had a wonderful array of very old Airfix model kits, all still in their original polly-bags with their wonderful stapled-on, fold-over instruction headers. I was transfixed by the Spitfire, Hurricane, Defiant, Fiat G50, Wildcat and of course my favourite, the P.1127. I was instantly transported to a time when my pocket money was eagerly spent every Saturday at the local shop! Just to see these old models was a real pleasure, as sometimes in these days of super-kits, multi-media accessories and more marking options than you can share a stick at, you can loose sight of
how it all started, and the simple pleasures of ‘locating and cementing’ together an undemanding set of plastic parts! But back to the present, and once again we have a packed issue for you with an eclectic mix of top quality subjects, and we welcome aboard Arthrit Sukthavon with his sublime ‘Arctic Pirate’ Buccaneer, and Marek Vrzák with his super-detailed Fw-190 ‘Fieseler Factory Dora’. Elsewhere Dirk Eikholt goes to town on the ES-3 ‘Shadow’, George Johnson bring a wonderful ‘Hind’ and Olivier Soulleys ‘Goes Bananas’ with the 1:48 Eduard ProfiPack Macchi MC 202 Folgore. Vini Pompeo shows you ‘how-to’ paint and weather an F-105 and Ricardo Rivas gives you the low-down on and Exocet armed Super Etendard. inetic continue to expand on their Mirage variants with the 2000C series, and this kit follows the same high standard as all their other Mirage kits. Having thoroughly enjoyed the ease with which the other kits have gone together I was pleased to see that this one followed the same pattern of construction. The kit is of a high standard of moulding, although there are a couple of areas that you need to exercise care with. The sprue gates were commendably thin and there was no flash. Modular construction always gets me worried as it can result in visible seam lines or misaligned parts, but with careful cleaning preparation and test fitting it was with great relief that I found no problems with these areas. As Kinetic have used the same mould for each of their 2000 variant kits, you need to remember that the 2000C has a flat wing profile with a slight anhedral, not shown in the kit. This is quite an easy fix and requires only a minor amount of cutting and scoring to lower the wing tips by 1.3mm.
espite the age of the Mirage 2000C design it has certainly not lost any of its potency as an agile and flexible weapons platform, and continues to be a popular choice with many air forces around the world and also remains steadfast in the French Air Force despite the arrival of the Rafael. The first Mirage 2000 to go into service was the single-seat Mirage 2000C, ‘C’ for ‘Chasseur’ (Fighter) variant. The first production aircraft flew in November 1982 and deliveries began in 1983. The first operational squadron was formed in 1984, the 50th anniversary of the French Air Force and a total of 124 Mirage 2000Cs were obtained by the AdA. The first thirty-seven aircraft were fitted with the Thomson-CSF RDM (Radar Doppler Multifunction) and were powered by the SNECMA M53-5 turbofan engine. The thirty-eighth Mirage 2000C had an upgraded SNECMA M53-5 P2 turbofan engine. The Radar Doppler Impulse (RDI) for the Mirage 2000C entered service in 1987 linked to Matra Super 530D missiles, which are much improved compared to the older Super 530F. Upgrades have included the addition of the Non-Cooperative Target Recognition (NCTR) mode for the RDI Radar, to allow identification of airborne targets not responding on IFF, and the ability to carry air-to-ground stores such as Matra 68mm rocket pods, Mk 80 series or French 250, 400, and 1000kg bombs and cluster weapons such as the Belouga or non-French models. Some variants, especially those equipped with the RDM radar (mainly used in export models) have the capability to use the Exocet anti-ship missile. Also, Indian Mirage 2000s have been integrated to carry the Russian R-73AE Archer missile and the indigenous Indian built Astra missile. The Mirage 2000B is a two-seat operational conversion trainer variant which first flew on 11 October 1980. The French Air Force acquired thirty Mirage 2000Bs, and all three AdA fighter wings each obtained several of them for conversion training.

The level of detail throughout the kit is good although it would have been nice to have some decals for the instrument panels, which are clearly visible through the clear open canopy. Admirably this was without the seam line, which is often found on other manufacturers canopies. One thing that has always impressed me with kits from Kinetic is their generosity with underwing

stores. These provide everything you will need to load your particular model with the relevant ordnance. It is great when a model builds with ease as it allows you to focus on the more fun job of bringing the model to life with any of the eight schemes provided in the box, the superb set of quality decals from Cartograf make this a pleasurable experience. Provision of high quality decals such as these is as I have found another hallmark of the continued commitment by this manufacturer to become top of their game.

The eagle eyed among you may notice that I have finished my model in a scheme not represented in the box. I happened to have available a set of decals that is a personal favourite scheme with an eye catching Hornet logo on the tail from Bu.No.95, EC 1/12 ‘Cambresis’, Base Aerienne 103 Cambrai-Epinoy. However, I did use the national marking and stencil data from Kinetic, when applying the dotted walkway markings I have found it a good idea to cut them into shorter less complex lines,

as they have a tendency to curl and twist. I am glad I have a few of these kits under my belt so I was prepared for this eventuality. There is however still room for improvement one particular area are the instruction sheets, the diagrams are vague when it comes to positioning of small parts and there are some omissions and miss labelled parts. Make sure you have a good source of reference material and check out what other modellers have done and all will be well. As it is not a massively complex aircraft you will figure it out, although it would be nice not to have to do that. Happily there is nothing that will cause any problems in the building of this superb kit and with each release I am seeing fewer of these errors.
06-11-Mirage-200C-MA-0617.indd 10
All in all this is yet another winner from Kinetic and I highly recommend this kit, and if you only have a passing interest in the Mirage, you must have one of these kits in your stash! MA

aving previously flown the F-8 Crusader and F4 Phantom VF-154 the ‘Black Knights’ were amongst the last squadrons to transition to the F-14A in October 1983. Due to their late move to the Tomcat the unit received TARPS equipped F-14’s from the start. Their first cruise with the F-14A was in 1985 onboard the USS Constellation, and several further cruises onboard ‘Connie’ followed, with one taking place in 1987. This eventful cruise saw VF-154 operating around the Persian Gulf, intercepting Iranian P-3F’s and conducting movements in the Gulf of Oman, at the so-called ‘Gonzo’ station. After further cruises aboard USS Constellation, and V-154 and her sister squadron VF-21 moved to the USS Independence and became the first F-14 squadrons to arrive in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation ‘Desert Shield’, although they never took part on ‘Desert Storm’. In August 1991 VF-154 moved to NAS Atsugi, becoming the first forward deployed F-14 squadron. At the same time, VF-154 became the first F-14 squadron to deploy with an air-to- ground bombing capability. With the cut back on F-14 squadrons, VF-154’s sister squadron, VF-21, was disestablished in 1996, leaving them as the only
12-17-Combat-Edge-Tomcat-MA-0617.indd 12
F-14 squadron in Carrier Air Wing 5. By now VF-154’s F-14A’s were severely showing their age, and the squadron swapped six of its worst airframes for six from VF-213 and finally received LANTRIN upgrades the last quarter of 1997 and January 1998, and were the first in the Fleet to receive the new AN/ALR-67. On January 5, 1998 Carrier Air Wing was called to action due
to trouble in the Persian Gulf, flying missions as part of Operation ‘Southern Watch’ and with their new LANTIRN pods VF-154 were able to provide high quality video of potential targets day or night. In the spring of 1999 the unit received their first Digital Flight Control System (DFCS) equipped jets. In 2003, VF-154 undertook their last cruise with the F-14, this time in support

of Operation ‘Iraqi Freedom’ and CVW-5 was chosen to be the dedicated Close Air Support wing. VF-154 deployed with twelve F-14A’s and detached five F-14As and five air crews to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The F-14s were usually paired with the aircraft already deployed to the airbase, dropping bomb themselves or guiding other aircraft’s bombs. The aircrews would fly daily missions and in one forty-eight hour period VF-154 flew fourteen sorties totaling 100 hours of flight time. The crews at Al Udeid subsequently delivered 50,000 pounds of ordnance during their stay at the airbase. On April 1, 2003, VF-154 lost one of its aircraft over southern Iraq when it suffered a single engine and fuel transfer system failure and was the first coalition aircraft to crash as part of Operation ‘Iraqi Freedom’. The F-14s on the USS Kitty Hawk, expended 246 GBU-12s, ten GBU-16s and four GBU-10s and by the end of the war, VF-154 had dropped 358 laser-guided bombs, buddy-lased sixty-five more and passed target coordinates for thirty-two JDAMs expending more ordnance than any other unit in CVW-5, despite flying the oldest jets in the air wing. In September 2003 VF-154 left NAF Atsugi for the last time, and a month later, VF-154 was redesignated VFA-154 at its new home at NAS Lemoore and began transitioning to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. MA

here really is nothing more to add when talking about F-14, with so many books, articles and web sites with detailed explanations and history of this magnificent fighter. Considered as one of the best Tomcat kits in 1:72, the Fujimi F-14 series often falls below the shadow of the Hasegawa and Fine Molds offerings, however, it gives you some fine details, a ‘friendlier’ break-down of parts with a radar, separate flaps and slats, moveable wings and extra engines. However, it has its shortfalls too, in particular the cockpit and engine areas, but there are aftermarket sets
12-17-Combat-Edge-Tomcat-MA-0617.indd 14
available for this. Fujimi have released quite a lot of box variations with some additional part updates, and this is their ‘Black Knights’ F-14A, which has the NACA gun vent added. I tackled the cockpit as usual, and just I added a control stick for the LANTIRN system. The rest of the kit went together well with just a moderate amount of filler needed, especially around the intakes, radome, and front-to-aft fuselage joint. The aft fuselage is actually wider than the front one near the intakes, so filler was needed to blend this area smooth. The plain wheel wells were detailed using scratchbuilt items and
wires, and then they were painted White and then washed with AK Interactive’s Landing Gear Wash. Painting a Tomcat adds a little bit of stress, because the aircraft was well known for its worn appearance. I have tried several painting techniques, and here tried to combine the widely known ‘pre-shading’ method with the currently popular ‘marbling style’. After that, I painted the aircraft in standard TPS colours thinly, layer by layer using Gunze FS36375, FS36320 and FS35237, with the dark grey area on top of the nose to middle-top fuselage and fins being painted in FS36081.

After each colour applied, I sprayed a much-diluted toned-down base shade to the panels, again using marbling style to make the colour even more irregular. This was all sealed with a gloss coat before decaling, and here I used Fightertown Decals #72005, which gives four options and I chose on from VF-154s ‘Final Combat Cruise’ in 2003. By reading the background stories, my choice was of F-14A, Modex 107, BuNo 161296, as she was the only ‘Black Knights’ Tomcat to fire her gun at the

enemy during Operation ‘Iraqi Freedom’. ‘107’ dropped thirty-two bombs during the campaign and she was also one of five Tomcats based in Al Udeid, in Qatar to support a special task force operating inside Iraq. Brian Plescia of Fightertown was of help to confirm that this particular bird had the strengthener plate on the rear crew footstep, and I also scratchbuilt the tall antenna and GPS dome using other kit’s AIM-9B seeker. After another clear coat, I randomly sprayed on some diluted base colour to tone-down the decals a

little bit, and then I used oil paints, Tamiya Panel Line Accents, Tamiya Weathering Master Sets and other AK Interactive products to weather the aircraft until desired effect achieved. A Gunze Flat Clear coat then sealed everything in. The bomb markings on this model are not historically correct as these were painted on when the squadron was on the way back from the theatre, but they do add an air of menace! I added some spare etch to the canopy and boarding steps to finish off, and my ‘Black Knight’ was complete MA

n recent years Airfix have really upped their game with some excellent tooling of both their old and newer kits. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the staple Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109 offerings. This particular kit of the Spitfire Mk.Vb is a kit worthy of note among the wonder kits that are available these days. When it comes to native British subjects Airfix have often been very accurate in regard to shape, and this model kit is no exception. Inside you get a comprehensively detailed cockpit although you will have to construct it carefully to get a good snug fit. The clear parts are superb and you get a number

of canopy variants be sure to add the correct decking for the variant that you are making. One notoriously difficult area that manufacturers seem to struggle with is the subtle curve between the fuselage and trailing edge of the wing. Often some will mould it as a straight ninety-degree angle, following from the initial curve. However, Airfix have got it spot on with the curve following through along the rear of wing all the way to the tip. It surprised me how quickly this kit goes together I can remember using only a small amount filler on the tail planes and where the wing section joins the fuselage. I stress though that this was a minimal amount of filler.

For me the joy of modelling is the finishing and weathering, as this is what turns a piece of plastic into a scale replica The surface details are excellent with fine recessed panel lines and raised fasteners where appropriate. The sprues are loaded with optional extras such as slipper tank, air filters, exhausts and ordnance. I imagine you could build pretty much any variant of the Spitfire Mk.Vb made, with decal options being the only restriction. Speaking of the decals they are in good register and have good colour saturation, they do eventually respond to decal setting solution though I find multiple applications may be necessary. For me the joy of modelling is the finishing and weathering, as this is what turns

a piece of plastic into a scale replica, evoking the wear and tear of the life of the machine. Certainly a tropical environment more than others puts a lot of stress on the paintwork and airframe not to mention the men maintaining the machine. I have often admired the creative bases and settings that other modellers display their masterpieces on. Sadly I am often remiss in this area, for two reasons. One, I keep convincing myself I do not have the time and two, I keep frightening myself off with the

SPITFIRE MK.VB thought that I will not be able to do it. So using some scrap laminate board and picture rail I had in the shed, I set about making a small square base. Half an hour later voila, I was on my way! Next came the scary part! I had collected a number of packets of grass, sand and ballast that railway modellers use and the secret to getting the finish you are aiming for, is firstly select the materials that match the environment you wish to simulate, and secondly have a rough idea of the layout such as flat and rough areas. Also are you going to add any scenery such as plants, grasses, tools, people and the like? The most basic base is just a case of randomly scattering the ballast until you are happy with it. This all needs to be fixed into place with a gentle spray of PVA solution, do not forget this step or a stiff breeze is all it will take to destroy your creation. In the case of my old base I spruced it up with fresh sandy coloured scatter material and added some Etched Palms from Eduard. The discarded tarpaulin was made using three-ply tissue wet with a PVA solution shaped and left to dry before painting. One final thing to keep in mind when making a base for your models is a handy artist’s technique. Try to set the subject off centre rather than in the middle it gives more depth and interest to the setting. Keep in mind that making a base is very subjective and not a precise science it is after all an art form somewhat like wreathing. There are
18-21-Tropical-Spitfire-MA-0617.indd 20
certain principles that you should keep in mind a few of which I have hopefully shared with you from my own experience. If like myself you have reservations about trying to make a base it really is not all that difficult and is great fun. Now I have a tropical base I think I might try something a bit larger and more adventurous? MA

BUCCANEER S.1. S.2 and Mk.50
MDF Scaled Down #6 By Andy Evans
Built by Blackburn at Brough, the Buccaneer epitomises the very essence of the fast, low-level ground attack concept, coupled with an inherently stable ride. The Buccaneer was designed in the late 1950’s as a low-level, long range, high speed, strike/attack/recce aircraft for carrier operations. It was produced in two main variants, the S.1 and the much improved and more powerful S.2, serving with both the Royal Navy and later the RAF from 1965 to 1994. Having enjoyed a successful, albeit relatively uneventful, career with the Royal Navy, the Buccaneer realised its true potential with the RAF and South African Air Force where it soon proved itself to be an immensely strong, manoeuvrable and reliable aircraft with a better speed, range and weapons carrying capability than many others. This was borne out during the many NATO exercises but came to public attention during Operation ‘Granby’ in the Gulf War. Here twelve Buccaneers were dispatched at three days notice, initially to laser designate targets for Tornado bombers, and later in the campaign, they acted as both Tornado designators and bombers in their own right whilst carrying out missions dropping their own 1000lb LGB’s. In total the type flew 216 Gulf sorties, destroying numerous bridges, aircraft shelters, Cover: Illustration Purposes Only
runways, command bunkers, ammunition stores and even other aircraft. The Buccaneer was prematurely withdrawn from service in 1994 as a result of arms reduction talks and the subsequent rationalisation of RAF assets, being replaced in the maritime strike role by more modern Tornado IDS aircraft. This new MDF Scaled Down from SAM Publications takes you into the heart of the Buccaneer, as we go faster, lower, longer!

began this build as usual with the cockpit, which was more or less straight-from-thebox. This was suitably painted and once dry I began the assembly of the fuselage, which required some little putty and sanding. I found the intakes and slipper tank particularly difficult and spent a long time getting the correct shapes here. I also added wing fold detail set from Eduard, which really lifted the look. Soon I was ready to paint and first I gave the entire model a coat of Mr Surface 500 and then set about painting the Buccaneer in the markings of No.208 Squadron, based at RAF Honington, as it was prepared for a NATO exercise in Norway
The undersides were painted in Light Aircraft Grey and the upper surfaces in Dark Sea Grey, and then a disruptive White was added to cover where the Dark Green would normally be found. I then applied a gloss coat and added the decals, which came from a number of sources. I then added a panel line wash and post shaded the finish with some very diluted black oil paint. I then added some Ammo of MIG Streaking Grime and Oil Stains under the wings and also added some Ammo of MIG Fresh Engine Oil to compete the look. Then a coat of flat brought everything together. MA

CZECH MATE George Johnson details the 1:35 Trumpeter Mi-24
I
discovered the Mi-24 attack helicopter a few years ago while thumbing through a military aviation magazine, and thought that it was one of the most menacing-looking birds I’d ever seen. Twin turbines power titanium rotor blades, and its bubble canopies and sleek design give it an almost shark-like appearance. The ‘Hind’ as NATO knows it, has no western counterpart, its simply big and mean, and I just had to build one, and my model represents a Czech Air Force version. I chose the 1:35 scale Trumpeter Mi-24, and construction was pretty straightforward, but the kit has a few fit issues that need to be addressed primarily with the stub wings and weapons pylons. I also used the wonderfully detailed Verlinden Cockpit set
30-33-Hind-Sight-MA-0617.indd 30
as well as Eduard etched Interior and Exterior sets. Hadmodels from Hungary makes a really beautiful set of decals for both Czech and Hungarian air force versions, and I picked the Czech version, simply because it has one of the coolest camouflage schemes around. I began with the cockpit. Verlinden’s castings are sharp and well defined, and the fit is almost perfect, and really comes up well. I added the resin side panels and additional etched parts, and whilst Soviet aircraft interiors are painted garish turquoise colours common, the Czechs ordered theirs with black instrument panels. I decided to build a hybrid version, so I painted the side panels, instruments and floor Tamiya NATO Black and used the etched parts
Perhaps the worst parts of the kit are the stub pylons

for the more visible areas. I then used Ammo of MIG panel washes and pigments to give it a well used look. I continued the ‘well worn’ look to the passenger/cargo area where I used more Verlinden, Eduard accessories and some of my own scratchbuilding. I assembled to parts, sprayed them with Alclad Grey Micro Filler/ Primer followed by Alclad Aluminum and Ammo of MIG Chipping Effects. After that all dried, I sprayed the parts with varying shades of custom mixed Tamiya acrylics, and chipped away at the paint using a very stiff brush and water. Several panel line washes and pigments followed
this, and then to the interior was attached the fuselage, and the halves were assembled together. I then proceeded to detail the engine compartment, and the detail here is pretty basic, so I added quite a bit of additional interest to an otherwise plain area. Some of the rivet detail was damaged when I sanded the seams so I went back with a very fine drill bit and made new rivet holes, and also rescribed a few lost panel lines. The wing stubs and weapons pylons were the most disappointing parts of the kit. Here the fit was terrible and lots of filling, sanding, reshaping, and re-scribing was required. There were huge gaps that had to be addressed that took up an inordinate amount of time. I continued the build with assembly and detailing of the rotors. The main rotor is really large and offers many detailing possibilities, so I went online and searched for images. The main rotor is a multi-piece assembly that required a lot of clean up, filling and sanding. I made the hydraulic lines out of small gauge wire insulation, solder and copper wire.
Every reference I had showed slightly different colours for the rotors, so I just mixed several shades of Poly-S Green, Black and Yellow, until I got what I thought was a pretty good average representation. The tail rotor received pretty much the same treatment and the results were well worth the effort. I added pieces from the Eduard exterior set to the fuselage and cut out a few panels for a few of the wire mesh vents. I added what appeared to be an orange coloured ‘black box’ on the tail of the aircraft that I made from square styrene tube and spare etch. I then brush painted it with Vallejo Orange. Painting required a bit of pre-planning and careful masking. I experimented quite a bit with the colours, and ended up using some Poly Scale paints that I’ve had for years. My first task was to custom mix the three basic colors- Light Grey, Olive Green and a Dark Cool Grey. The model was then painted as sub-assemblies and careful consideration was given to properly continuing

the camouflage from surface to surface. I left the paint to dry in a warm room for a day between colours in order to assure that the paint had fully cured. After the last colour was applied, I began the process of enhancing the panel lines with various shades of Ammo of MIG Panel Line Washes. My references showed Czech Hinds being lightly weathered, so I kept with that theme. The weapons, engines, and fuel tanks were painted with various shades of Alclad Metallic’s and weathered with Ammo of MIG products, and after all the shades were down and weathering applied, I lightly (and very carefully) sanded the painted surfaces with 6000 grit cloth. After a coat of Johnson’s ‘Future’ I applied the Hadmodels decals, and then a clear coat finished the build. This was probably one of my most enjoyable builds and recently won ‘Best Rotary Wing Aircraft’ at a recent show here in Portland, Oregon. MA

evell have been one of the leading manufacturers of plastic model kits for a long time now, and have produced many classic kits of their own design. However, they have also re-boxed many superb kits from other manufacturers and released them at competitive prices. This latest offering is actually a re-issue of Eduard’s superb Focke Wulf Fw190D-9, and as many readers will quite likely have built the Eduard kit, there is not much I can add to the numerous reviews already available. Essentially this is what Eduard would call their ‘Weekend Edition’, in that is there are no etched parts or paint masks included. Nevertheless, the kit does come with superb levels of detail both in the cockpit, wheel wells and the gun bays. Surfaces are moulded with restrained yet appropriate rivets and fine

recessed panel lines. It behoves me to mention that the awkward fit of the wings is still an inherent part of this kit so be very careful and test fit regularly as you work. I had some Luftwaffe etched seatbelts in my ‘spares-box’ and could not resist adding them, as they are so much better than the provided decals. With the superb large clear canopy open and the nicely detailed cockpit very visible such a detail as this makes a huge difference. Other additions of my own included metal gun barrels and Pitot tube, which I manufactured from the superb range of Albion Alloys metal tubing. Revell have also improved upon their instructions sheets recently. These are now full colour with a lot of clear information including paint colour call outs of all the various parts. Two options are available the most attractive of

FOCKE WULF FW190D-9 which is the first one shown on the box art. The supplied decals are of the highest quality with fine carrier film, good registration and colour saturation. With such an interesting scheme on offer it enabled me to try out some of the new acrylic paint offered by Hataka. Using the Hataka thinners I found the paints
to spray smoothly and give good coverage over large areas. I would recommend priming the surface first, as this type of paint will not adhere well to bare plastic. The drying times are, I would say as fast as water will dry, they are not as fast as lacquers but more so than enamels. I only found one difficulty with them and that was when I had to reduce the pressure for fine freehand lines or mottling. However, I found them to be accurate colour and gave a durable in finish. It has been a while since I built this kit and it was an interesting surprise release from Revell, and just be aware of the wing root areas,

MODEL AIRCRAFT JUNE 2017
The Lockheed S-3 Viking
T
he Lockheed S-3 Viking was a fourseat, twin-engine turbofan-powered aircraft used by the US Navy to identify and track enemy submarines, and later surface warfare and aerial refuelling. The Viking also provided electronic warfare support and surface surveillance capabilities to the carrier battle group. A carrier-based, subsonic, all-weather, multi-mission aircraft with long range the Viking, boasted automated weapon systems, and was capable of extended missions with in-flight refuelling, and because of the Viking’s engines’ low-pitched sound, it was nicknamed the ‘Hoover’. The S-3A and B were a conventional monoplane with a high-mounted cantilever wing, swept at an angle of 15° with two GE TF-34 high-bypass turbofan engines mounted in nacelles under the wings, providing excellent fuel efficiency, and giving the Viking the required long range and endurance. The wing is fitted with leading edge and Fowler flaps. Spoilers are fitted to both the upper and the lower surfaces of the wings. All control surfaces are actuated by dual hydraulically boosted irreversible systems. In the event of dual hydraulic failures, an Emergency Flight Control System (EFCS) permitted manual control with greatly increased stick forces and reduced control authority. The aircraft seated four crewmembers, three officers and one enlisted air crewman, with the pilot and the co-pilot/tactical coordinator (COTAC) in the front of the cockpit
38-47-MA-EXTRA-Viking-MA-0617.indd 39
and the tactical coordinator (TACCO) and sensor operator (SENSO) in the back. When the aircraft’s anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role ended in the late 1990s, the enlisted SENSOs were removed from the crew. In the tanking crew configuration, the S-3B typically flew with only a crew of two (pilot and co-pilot/COTAC). All crewmembers sat on forward-facing, upward-firing Douglas Escapac zero-zero ejection seats. The aircraft had two underwing hardpoints used to carry fuel tanks, general purpose and cluster bombs, missiles, rockets, and storage pods. It also had four internal bomb bays that could be used to carry general-purpose bombs, aerial torpedoes, and special stores. Fifty-nine sonobuoy chutes were fitted, as well as a dedicated Search and
Rescue (SAR) chute. The S-3 was also fitted with the ALE-39 countermeasure system and could carry up to ninety rounds of chaff, flares, and expendable jammers (or a combination of all) in three dispensers, and a retractable magnetic anomaly detector ‘MAD Boom’ was fitted in the tail. In the late 1990s, the S-3B’s role was changed from anti-submarine warfare (ASW) to antisurface warfare (ASuW). At that time, the ‘MAD Boom’ was removed, along with several hundred pounds of submarine detection electronics and the sonobuoy chutes were faired over with a blanking plate. On 20 February 1974, the S-3A officially became operational with the Air VS-41, the ‘Shamrocks’ at NAS North Island,

California, which served as the initial S-3 Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets until a separate Atlantic Fleet FRS, VS-27, was established in the 1980, and the first operational cruise of the S-3A took place in 1975 with the VS-21 ‘Fighting Redtails’ aboard USS John F. Kennedy. Starting in 1987, some S-3As were upgraded to S-3B standard with the addition of a number of new sensors, avionics, and weapons systems, including the capability to launch the AGM84 Harpoon anti-ship missile. The S-3B could also be fitted with ‘buddy stores’, external fuel tanks that allowed the Viking to refuel other aircraft. Sixteen S-3As were converted to ‘ES-3A Shadows’ for carrier-based electronic intelligence (ELINT) duties and a further six aircraft, designated US-3A, were converted for a specialised utility and limited cargo COD requirement. Plans were also made to develop the KS-3A carrier-based tanker aircraft, but this program was ultimately cancelled after the conversion of just one early development S-3A.

during Operation ‘Iraqi Freedom’, an S-3B from Sea Control Squadron 38 the ‘Red from the USS Constellation successfully executed a time sensitive strike and fired a laser-guided Maverick missile to neutralise a significant Iraqi naval and leadership target in the port city of Basra, Iraq. This was one of the few times in its operational history that the S-3B Viking had been employed overland on an offensive combat air strike,
and the first time it launched a laser-guided Maverick missile in combat. Between July and December 2008 the VS-22 Checkmates, the last sea control squadron, operated a detachment of four S-3Bs from the Al Asad Airbase in Al Anbar Province, west of Baghdad. These planes were fitted with LANTIRN pods and they performed non-traditional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (NTISR). After more than 350 missions, the Checkmates returned to NAS Jacksonville, Florida on 15 December 2008, prior to disestablishing on 29 January 2009. The final carrier based S-3B Squadron, VS-22 was decommissioned at NAS Jacksonville on 29 January 2009. Sea Control Wing Atlantic was decommissioned the following day on 30 January 2009, concurrent with the US Navy retiring the last S-3B Viking from front-line Fleet service. By late 2015, the U.S. Navy had three Vikings remaining operational in support roles. One was moved to AMARC in November 2015, and when the final two were retired, one was stored and the other transferred to NASA in January 2016, officially retiring the S-3 from Navy service.
LOCKHEED S-3 VIKING
With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the breakup of the Warsaw Pact, the SovietRussian submarine threat was perceived as much reduced, and the Vikings had the majority of their antisubmarine warfare equipment removed. The aircraft’s mission subsequently changed to sea surface search, sea and ground attack, overthe-horizon targeting, and aircraft refuelling. As a result, the S-3B after 1997 was typically crewed by one pilot and one co-pilot and the additional seats could still support additional crewmembers for certain missions. To reflect these new missions the Viking squadrons were re-designated from ‘Air Antisubmarine Warfare Squadrons’ to ‘Sea Control Squadrons.’ The S-3B saw extensive service during the 1991 Gulf War, performing attack, tanker, and ELINT duties, and launching ADM-141 TALD decoys. This was the first time an S-3B was employed overland during an offensive air strike. The first mission occurred when an aircraft from VS-24, from the USS Theodore Roosevelt attacked an Iraqi Silkworm missile site. The aircraft also participated in the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s and in Operation ‘Enduring Freedom’ in 2001 and March 2003,

Shadow Snooper Dirk Eickholt builds the 1:48 Italeri ES-3A
T
his is the old Esci kit E-3A, reissued by Italeri and reworked as the ES-3A with an added sprue containing the parts for the Shadow version. So based on this kit, I decided to do some super-detailing work on this relatively old kit. This meant a look at the aftermarket for a cockpit, decals, and a wing fold set, plus landing gear, ejection seats and other items. I was lucky to get the cockpit and wheel bay set from Goffy Models, a wing fold set from Paragon and a Wolfpack OIF update set, which has some nice details to convert the S-3A into a B or ES-3 as well. The main wheels came from Royal Resin, and Ben Schumacher, a dedicated modeller with awesome talents, gave me a set of his 3D printed front wheels. For the engine I used the A-10 detail set from Italeri, since the A-10 has the same engine as the Viking/Shadow, and I also added an Eduard etched set for the bomb bay,
two light layers. Once the canopy was glued to the fuselage and masked I looked at the panel lines, which seemed to deep, so I filled then with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty and rescribed them to the right depth. The most difficult step was the installment of the wing fold, and thankfully Paragon supplies some good instructions as to where to cut the wings and the fin, however, filling the gaps and sanding them to blend to the rest of the wing took me several hours.

exterior and undercarriage, and another detail set for the S-3B. I decided to do the VQ-5 Shadow, stationed at NAF Misawa Japan on board the USS Kitty Hawk 1998, and chose a decal set from Aeromaster. I started with the Goffy cockpit, which was suitably painted and detailed and then reworked radar operators station. I then moved onto the fuselage, and here I cut out the wheel bay, the port storage compartment, the front and back starboard electronics bay, the radome and the ejection hatch on the starboard side. For the wingfold I needed to separate the fin and the wings. The rear wheel bay was next and this was painted with Alclad White Primer. The additional smaller parts for the wheels bay were then installed. Next I took care of the windscreen/canopy and I wanted to come close to the real thing. The Viking/Shadow had gold/copper tint on the front windscreen, so to replicate this, I ordered some spare canopies from Italeri, and after several trials I settled on Ammo of MIG Old Brass applied in

LOCKHEED S-3 VIKING With the build now complete, I added a coat of Grey Primer and then some pre-shading, and a mottle coat to add depth the paintwork. I then added the typical colours for the US Navy carrier based jets using both Compass Grey and Medium Grey from the Ammo of MIG range. Before I started this kit I wanted to display the electronic devices in the former bomb bay of the Shadow. The problem was, that I only had one image. The Goffy Models set for starboard rear electronic bay had a set of individual electronic equipment that I duplicated with some scratchbuilding and then added all the different panels and wires to look as close as possible to the original. The inside of the door has four lights installed, two red and two white, and each is protected by a metal mesh, which I

duplicated. Once this was finished I concentrated on the decals. The Aeromaster decals went on well and I didn´t use ‘Future’ or any kind of a gloss layer before putting down the decals, and I had no silvering. Weathering is one of my favorite subjects in building a model. First I picked out the panel lines with a Dark Grey oil wash, and then using black, white and brown in different mixtures helped to create the effect I wanted. Additionally I used some Aquarelle colouring pencils in the smaller areas. I also used Tamiya Weathering Sets with their soot, grime or snow colours for additional effects. Then everything received a matt coat to bring it all together. At this point I removed the canopy mask and attached the landing gear, the wings and fin and

the front radome with the radar inside. This step gave me some headaches. I had some images, but not the ones I needed to display the front section behind the radar itself correctly. A very friendly member in the S-3 Viking group on Facebook posted some shots that helped me! Finally I worked on the tank and the ‘buddy’ store and pylons. The pylons are from the Wolfpack OIF set and are nicely detailed, and I took the starboard tank is from a Hasegawa A-7 kit. The ‘buddy’ store on the port pylon is from Attack Squadron. These were then fixed to the wings and I added all those antennas on the underside. Finally I added some RBF flags and scratchbuilt the cover for the ram air intake in the fin. MA

One of the most enduring military aircraft designs ever produced, the F-5 series has served for more than four decades since its initial flight on July 31, 1963. The F-5 remains an agile, highly manoeuvrable, reliable supersonic fighter; lead-in trainer and ‘aggressor’, combining advanced aerodynamic design, engine performance and low operating costs. More than 2,600 were built by Northrop and with even more built under co-production and licensing agreements with Canada, the Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Spain and Switzerland. From the F-5’s first delivery in 1964 to its final one in 1989, every aircraft has delivered the performance as promised, and approximately two-thirds of the original production F-5’s remain operational in twenty-six countries, including the United States. Being smaller and simpler than contemporaries such as the F-4, the F-5 cost less to both purchase and operate, making it a popular export aircraft. The F-5A ‘Freedom Fighter’ entered service in the early 1960s, and although the USAF at the time had no acknowledged need for a light fighter, it did procure roughly 1,200 T-38 Talons, which were directly based on the F-5 design. After winning the International Fighter Aircraft competition in 1970, a program aimed at providing effective low-cost fighters to American allies, Northrop introduced the second-generation F-5E ‘Tiger II’ in 1972. The F-5 was also developed

into a dedicated reconnaissance version, the RF-5 ‘Tigereye’ and the ill-fated F-20 ‘Tigershark’. For the F-5 it has been a fast ride into aviation history! The story of the F-5 is brought to life in this new MDF Scaled Down from SAM Publications, and the types background; operators, colour schemes and roles are all included, along with colour profiles, technical diagrams and extensive walk arounds. This is a must have book for the enthusiast and modeller alike.

SUPER ETENDARD
EXOCET! Ricardo Rivas builds a 1:48 Kinetic Super Etendard from the Falklands War
M
uch has been written about the conflict in the South Atlantic in 1982, and my build represents an Argentine Super Etendard armed with an Exocet missile slated to attack HMS Invincible. The aircraft ‘3-A-205’ piloted by Lieutenant Luis Collavino who fired the last of five missiles against ships of the task force. A first attempt to attack the British fleet was made on 2 May 1982, but this was abandoned due to flight-refuelling problems, and on 4 May, two Super Étendards each launched one Exocet at the British destroyer HMS Sheffield with one missile crippling the ship. On 25 May, another attack by two Super Étendards resulted in two missiles hitting the merchant ship Atlantic Conveyor, which was carrying several helicopters and various other supplies to the front line. For this build I am using the very nice 1:48 Kinetic Super Etendard kit, along with an Eduard Cockpit Set, Crossdelta Masking Set, and Eduard Brassin AM-39 Exocet kit. The interior was painted with a 50:50 mix of Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black and X-22 Clear. The Eduard etch set was then added and detailed

For the exterior Dark Grey Blue tone of the Argentine Navy SuEs I used the following mix - Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue + 25% XF-63 Panzer Grey + 20% XF-2 White + 5% XF-8 Flat Blue, and finally a touch of X-23 Clear Blue. BELL UH-1
COMBAT-ZONE
Bell of the Ball Anthony Tucker-Jones takes a look at the role of the Bell UH-1 in the Vietnam War
The rugged Bell Huey UH-1 came to define the Vietnam War
T
hanks to innumerable Hollywood Vietnam War movies the helicopter became the defining weapon of the conflict. Its visual impact and resulting iconic status became something of a cliché – nonetheless this status was well deserved. As a result of US involvement in Southeast Asia helicopter deployment and tactics reached its height. The 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) alone could put 400 helicopters in the air over Vietnam. The Bell UH-1 Iroquois, better known as the Huey was the robust, utilitarian workhorse of US forces. Its brave pilots constantly landed and picked up troops from ‘hot’ landing zones. The Huey first arrived in early 1962 and within two years there were 250 of them serving in Vietnam. Helicopter pilot Warrant Officer Robert Mason recalled ‘My first impression of the machine was that it was pure silk’. At operating speed there was no roaring, vibrating or shaking, just a smooth whine from the turbine.’ Compared to the H-19 which he was trained on it was a Rolls-Royce. Also the Huey was to prove to be incredibly rugged and could take a lot of punishment, both in terms of handling and from enemy fire.
54-57-Combat-Zone-Bell-Ball-MA-0617 copy.indd 54
The short fuselage models comprised the UH-1A,B,C,E and P while the longer bodies were designated the UH-1D,F,H and N. The UH-1D was first delivered in 1963, but was superseded in combat units by the H model. Huey was deployed as a gunship (Guns), transport (Slick) and air ambulance (Medevac). Controversially the Huey was also employed to spray jungle defoliant. Along with the door mounted M60 machine gun, gunships were also armed with 40mm grenade launchers and 2.75 inch rockets. Robert Mason observed ‘Our two door gunners would be stationed on either side of the hell-hole-cover – in the pockets – firing M60 machineguns attached to pylons. During our first two months, though, the machineguns would simply be strung from the top of the open doorways on elastic bungee cords. With the crew chief and gunner in the pockets, there was enough room for eight or ten troopers on the cargo deck.’ Crucially in the early days the pilot and co-pilot lacked armoured chest plates that could protect them from Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army small arms fire. The helicopter’s first major conventional war was in fact Korea, where such aircraft as
the Sikorsky S-51/H-5 and Bell 47 were used for CASEVAC and reconnaissance purposes. In Indochina the French first deployed American built H-19B helicopters against the Viet Minh in 1954 though this was too late to help stave off defeat. France determined not to lose Algeria as well, quickly became one of the world’s leading authorities on the use of helicopters in combat conditions, after buying further aircraft from the US. These included the Boeing Vertol OH-21 Work

Horse/Shawnee. In order to protect these slow transports from the Algerian National Liberation Front, the French Army’s 2nd Helicopter Group experimented with mounting machine guns on its aircraft for counter-insurgency operations.
Whilst the helicopter was used in assault operations in Korea, Suez and Algeria, the concept of massed helicopter air mobility was not fully appreciated until American intervention in Southeast Asia. The Vietnam War was where

the helicopter truly came into its own, playing a significant role in the bloody and protracted conflict. Not only did the helicopter prove its utility in a whole host of roles, the war also highlighted its extreme vulnerability to small arms fire and ground fire in general. This was attested by the very high helicopter casualty rates, which have never been matched since. In December 1961 former escort carrier USNS Card arrived off Saigon with thirty-two Vertol H-21 Shawnee helicopters. The following year the first Hueys were initially deployed for supply purposes, but quickly became pressed into service to ferry troops into combat. By 1964 over 400 US Army aircraft had been deployed in theatre, including 250 UH-1 Hueys and nine CH37 Mojave heavy transport helicopters. The CH46 Chinook medium lift helicopter also earned its stripes in Vietnam. The first US Army airmobile unit to be committed was the 173rd Airborne Brigade in June 1965, followed by the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The latter incorporated elements of its predecessor the 11th Air Assault Division (Test) from Fort Benning along with units from three other divisions. The 1st Cavalry stationed

The fate of many South Vietnamese Hueys in 1975 tossed into the sea
at An Khe on Route 19 regularly had hundreds of helicopters airborne at any one time. Pilots were taught to fly in very close formation and low level so that a standard flight of four Hueys could get into a small landing zone at the same time. As the war progressed the landing zones were increasingly contested. ‘I could see those tracers, in their lazy-looking flight upward, from
54-57-Combat-Zone-Bell-Ball-MA-0617 copy.indd 56
five miles away,’ recalled WO Mason. ‘In between each tracer were four more bullets. A fifty-calibre machine gun spits out bullets a half-inch in diameter and an inch long. When blasted out a gun at 3000 feet per second, it had incredible power and range.’ These rounds easily punctured the fuselage and the pilot’s Plexiglas. n 1968 crucially North Vietnamese General Giap underestimated the technological strides that had been made since Dien Bien Phu when he launched his Tet Offensive. The helicopter and transport aircraft sustained the lifeline to the US firebase at Khe Sanh and indeed air supply delivered 12,000 tons of cargo. In addition over 600 para-drops were made, which were vital for those men on the exposed hills. On the ground the communists did ensure that no convoys got through by keeping up their artillery attacks on American bases at Dong Ha, Con Thien and Camp Carroll. Although Tet was largely over by 26 February 1968, Khe Sanh remained surrounded. A month after the Tet Offensive was thwarted the US 1st Cavalry was sent to lift the 77 day siege with Operation Pegasus/Lam Son 207. The Americans and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)

put together a relief force, numbering 30,000 troops. The 1st Cavalry landed 10 miles from Khe Sanh on 1 April 1968; there they joined other American and ARVN forces to open Route 9. Elements of the Air Mobile entered Khe Sanh largely unopposed six days later. Military clear up activity in the area continued well into the following year. Operation Scotland II ran until February 1969 and resulted in over 3,000 enemy casualties around Khe Sanh. The base itself was evacuated in mid-1968 and was temporarily recaptured by the ARVN in 1971. After that it remained in NVA hands and by 1973 the airstrip had been turned into an all-weather MiG fighter runway. By 1968 the South Vietnamese Air Force possessed about seventy-five H-34 helicopters, by the end of 1972 it had some 500 new machines including Hueys, one of the largest, costliest and most modern helicopters fleets in the world. Just three years later with the South’s collapse all were destroyed or had fallen into North Vietnamese hands. The largest, longest ranging combat helicopter assault was Operation Lam Son 719 on 6 March 1971, when 120 Hueys ferried two ARVN infantry battalions 77km into Laos. They only lost one helicopter on the approach. This impressive success was marred by the complete shambles of the evacuation and by the fact that during Laotian operations between February 8 - April 9, 1971, the Americans lost 108 helicopters and another 600 damaged. All this helped hasten America’s departure. Ultimately the US forces and ARVN’s dependence on the helicopter was to prove a fatal flaw – especially after the NVA became equipped with the Soviet man portable SAM-7 anti-aircraft missile (effective against all subsonic aircraft below about 3,000m). It also ran contrary

to the hearts and minds campaign by distancing the military from the indigenous population it was supposed to be protecting. Whilst Vietnam established the helicopter’s indispensability as a battlefield transport and aggressor, it also highlighted its vulnerability. Staggeringly over 16,000 of all types were lost to enemy action or accident in Vietnam (though this equated to only one per every 4,000 sorties). Nonetheless, many were recovered and repaired, so that total combat losses amounted to 2,076, whilst accidents accounted for another 2,566. In Vietnam the UH-1 received the brunt of things. In total about 16,000 Hueys were built with about 7,000 of them seeing action in Vietnam; of these 3,305 were lost along with 2,177 pilots and crew. Remarkably this highly successful helicopter was used by more air forces and built in greater numbers than any other military aircraft since World War 2. MA

F/A-18F SUPER HORNET
Bounty Hunter Danumurthi Mahendra builds the 1:48 Hasegawa F/A-18F in the low-vis markings of VF-2
I
can only describe Hasegawa’s F/A-18F Super Hornet as awesome! The quality of the moulding and the level of detail is excellent: the cockpit and wheel bays have nice raised details; the canopy can be displayed open or closed, the wings’ moveable parts can be positioned either neutral or drooped. However, the cockpit lacked any sidewall details, and the ejector seats were adequate, but a resin upgrade would be way better. I started the construction by working on the interior. The intakes were cleverly designed so that I could work on the mouths and trunks separately, and they were filled and sanded, primed and painted White and Mr. Color 308 Grey, respectively. The cockpit was painted as per instructions using XF-54 Dark Sea Grey and dry-brushed to get the details out. I used the

kit’s ejector seats and added harnesses using masking tape and bits of styrene. As I shifted my work to the front and lower part of the fuselage, I found this section needing some major filling and sanding. The wing roots were not excluded from gaps either! With such intricate surface details, the biggest challenge is keeping many of them intact as much as possible. The key is being careful when aligning and gluing the parts, as this will minimise the need for fillers and sanding. The kit supplied landing gear consisted of multiple parts, and these were cleaned and then painted White, and I added a good coat of gloss before applying decals and some washing. I used epoxy putty to fill the noticeable gap when I attached the AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR pod on the
port side weapon pylon, and the centreline pylon had the same gap issue, however, this time I used a piece of styrene strip, filled and sanded smooth. I then dry-fitted the six weapon pylons and found out that I needed to enlarge

Grey a panel at a time; and I followed that with the lower fuselage with Mr. Color 308 Grey. I then layered them with a variety of lighter and darker shades of Grey at different locations, keeping it random and small. Now it was time to paint the details. I masked off the areas around the wheel bays with regular tape and Mr. Sol Neo. I sprayed the interior Flat White and edges Flat Red, and painted the afterburner cans with MM 1420 Steel and MM 1424 Burnt Iron. Hasegawa provided a pair of AIM-9X Sidewinders and AIM-120 AMRAAMs, which were masked and painted and given their appropriate decals. The other weapons, which

were a pair of GBU-31 JDAM and AGM-84 Harpoon/ SLAM, were obtained from Hasegawa’s Weapons Set D. I wanted my Super Hornet in low-key markings with weathering common on current Navy aircraft. So the entire aircraft was sprayed a copious amount of Johnson’s ‘Future’ to give it the necessary gloss surface for the decals. My

markings selection came from CAM Decals #P48-103, for a bird from VFA2 ‘Bounty Hunters’, and were just excellent to work with. I used a water based panel line wash, mixing Sakura Poster Colour Black and Brown, diluted in water and dishwashing detergent and applied with a flat brush and any excess was removed with a dry cloth. I then added a coat

of Testors Dullcote, after which I attached all of the smaller details such as the ladder, weapons, bay doors, clear canopy, and brush painted the navigation lights A.MIG.093 Crystal Red. To get the weathering right, I always look into images of the actual aircraft in their operational environment, and I use a variety of techniques to replicate the effects that I wanted. I applied and polished the exhaust cans with A.MIG.3009 Gun
Metal and wanted to show dirt left from boot marks, so I dusted the upper part of the LERX with A.MIG.3014 Russian Earth. I then added a weathered look to the bombs, missiles, drop tanks, and lower fuselage area using different materials, notably spraying X-19 Smoke, and brushed oil stains using Tamiya Weathering Set D and A.MIG.1409 Fuel Stains, onto specific areas using a flat brush. TAIWANESE RF-5E
EYE OF THE
TIGER Mario Serelle builds a Taiwanese RF-5E using the 1:48 AFV Club kit
B
ack in 2010 AFV Club presented us with a brand new tooled F-5E Tiger II kit in 1:48 quickly followed by its recce cousin the RF-5E Tigereye. It’s a superb model kit, with 180+ parts, nicely detailed and full of options. The distinctive slim lines of Tiger have been finely captured and reproduced, with appropriate external loads, complemented by a stunning cockpit and wheel bays. My only addition to the model was seat belts made from masking tape, which were glued in place before spraying all parts with a Black primer. The cockpit was then airbrushed with A.MIG-205 Grey FS 36231 and the details brush painted with various acrylic colours according to my references. Ammo of MIG Deep Grey Wash and Interior Wash were used to add depth to the details and provide a dirty look to the interior. A Neutral

Grey dry-brushing followed and helped all raised details to show up. Some scratches and scuffs were also added with a Black watercolour pencil and dry brushing Yellow-Green and Aluminium paints on the floor were represent by more chipped paintwork. The cockpit assembly then fits well into the nose section, which was carefully built up, and here there are numerous panels to be inserted into the nose, including the clear parts, which represent the camera ports. If you take you’re time and properly dry-fit and adjust all these parts, only minimal filling will be required. Unfortunately, AFV don’t provide any detail for the cameras, so the internal area was just painted Black. The rest of the assembly was straightforward, and presented no real challenge. I just had to restore some panel lines and rivets on the nose area and the job was
done. Representing flaps and slaps in non-neutral positions always adds interest in my opinion, and that’s an option provided by AFV, which I made good use of. After cleaning the model with isopropyl alcohol, painting began with a coat of Grey FS36231, which was airbrushed on the canopy frames to match the interior colour. All parts to be painted in metallic shades received a Black Gloss coat and I applied pre-shading on the airframe to create some subtle tonal variations to the camouflage colours to follow. Here I used Black

and White to create uneven patterns over the model darkening and lightening different panels. The camouflage colours were applied freehand next using A.MIG-203 FS 36375 and A.MIG-208 FS 36320, very diluted and in thin layers, working slowly to preserve the pre-shading effects. Selected panels were then masked and postshaded with Tamiya Smoke and metallic areas painted with Alclad Aluminium. The Black and White stripes on the emergency arrestor hook were carefully masked and airbrushed as well. Back with Tamiya Smoke, this was now applied on the metallic rear fuselage to add a subtle burnt metal effect. In order to add some shine to this Grey Tiger, I decided to use the smaller F-5A/B
With a careful painting the completed cockpit looks great

drop tank instead of the regular F-5E/F larger tank. My reference images show various RF-5E with these small tanks in a natural metal finish, and I really liked the look. So the fuel tank was painted Polished Aluminium with its centre section in Aluminium, both from Alclad. With painting complete, the model received a couple of Alclad Aqua Gloss varnish in preparation for the decals. The decals supplied by AFV are thick but, after some applications of setting solution, they ended up conforming
well to the details. My option was for an aircraft from Republic of China (Taiwan) Air Force with an interesting sun tail art. Another coat of Aqua Gloss and I moved to the final weathering stage. Making use of Ammo of MIG Panel Line washes, I used a Medium Grey shade on the entire airframe, followed by a Deep Grey tone applied on selected panels were I desired a dirtier or deeper appearance. Blue Black was my choice to the metallic areas and Black Night was used on some grilles and air vents. You can’t see paint peeling off these Taiwanese Tigers so I choose a subtle approach, dabbing on some Yellow-Green with a sponge onto the air intakes, wings and tail planes leading edges to represent small dots of exposed primer. Taiwanese Tigers seem to be well maintained, and the subtle approach was kept on fluid leaks as well. I used different Streaking products to
68-71-Eye-Tiger-MA-0617.indd 71
Exposed primer was simulated by applying some Yellow-Green with a sponge or small brush on the leading edges
over it, giving a worn and beaten metallic surface. Streaking Grime and watercolour pencils gave the additional dirt on the underside of the tank, typical from handling on the ground. Time now to bring it all together and to replace the plastic gun muzzle by a brass tube. Final assembly was easy, however, I spent quite a while attaching the main gear doors and their tiny supports! I’m a big fan of the Tiger in all its versions and AFV Club offer a well-detailed and pleasant build.
reproduce some stains on the bottom of the rear fuselage, around to the landing gears and on control surfaces actuators. On the access panels around the nose area, I applied some Streaking Grime with a small brush and these were then blended with a clean, soft brush after they had dried. This created a convincing dirt effect on MA panels, which were often handled. After a semigloss coat, Brown and Black watercolour pencils were used Streaking Grime and Rainmarks Effects to add some scuffs on the same were applied with a small brush around areas, contributing for an even the access panels on the nose section and more worn look. blended with a soft brush The natural metal finished drop tank received a Deep Grey wash and acrylic Silver paint was randomly dry-brushed

or this build I am looking at one of my favourite World War II German Fighters, the Focke Wulf FW 190D-9 Dora, which for me is definitely the smartest of the wide range of Focke Wulf types. After some deliberation as to which aircraft and which camouflage scheme to choose, I settled on the beautiful Black 1 W.Nr.600150, belonging to Stab/JG4, constructed sometime between October to December 1944, and was one of the first production units from Gerhard Fieseler Werke (GFW), which was one of four factories producing Dora. At the end of the War, Black 1 was discovered in good condition and hidden in the forest at the Frankfurt´s Rhein-Main airfield

by advancing US troops For the project I used two 1:48 kits, one from Eduard and one from Tamiya, and I set about obtaining all the other necessary accessories I needed. I also sepearated out the parts I would need from either kit based on dimensional accuracy, and these were divided into several boxes ready for use. For the fuselage I made quite a few modifications, as it was necessary to work on several places around the engine bay and cockpit, replacing panels with more in-scale pieces. As always, I wanted to make the model more attractive by deflecting the control surfaces and I also added new hinges to these areas. I reworked all of the rivet lines, a tedious job but
this gave a more realistic appearance. The cockpit was made primarily of Eduard etched parts including instrument panel and the seat and control lever came from an Aires set, with a great seat belt from HGW. I also used a Quick Boost Revi 16B Gunsight and an Aires FuG 16ZY radio, and some scratchbuilt wiring. The main wheels

For this project I used two 1:48 kits, one from Eduard and one from Tamiya came from Aires, and the tail wheel from Black Dog. I then added an Aires firewall, the de-icing systém for the windshield, and the sliding rear part of the canopy, which was taken from the Eduard kit. Moving now onto the Aires gun-bays, which include some beautiful internal structures, I complemented these with and electrical cables and then these were fitted into the wings. The metal barrels for the cannons and largecalibre machine guns came from a Master Model set, and I also created apertures that led through wheel wells to form chutes for the spent ammunition. The undercarriage was quite challenging. I bought a beautiful set of cast wheel wells from Aires for the Fw 190A-3. These needed to be slightly modified by the removal of the covers to show the type used on the D-9. However, after I cut

away the kit parts I discovered to my horror that the Aires wheel wells were too short! I wrote to Aires about the problem and they kindly supplied me with parts of the correct size! I also added more details here from an Eduard set, and also attached some hydraulic lines, and using the Eduard undercarrige legs, I removed the oleo parts and replaced them with a cut down syringe for more effect, and I also added some and electrical wiring and hydraulic lines. For the tyres I chose to use the Eduard parts and warmed them enough to be able to flatten the bottom portion to show the weight of the aircraft. The engine was perhaps the most complex and most problematic installation part of the entire project. The main pieces came from the Aires set, and the propeller and spinner from AML, and I slightly adjusted the rivet lines on the spinner. I also took used parts from Tamiya and Eduard with a number of scratchbuilt pieces

too. A complex installation of cables, wiring and other individual parts took me a long time to achieve, but in the end I was happy with the result. With construction complete, I masked off the areas neccessay and degreased the surfaces and sprayed on a layer of Mr Surfacer 1000 to reveal any imperfections. It is very important before spraying any further colours to polish the surface to an almost a mirror shine. Next came some pre-shading with Dark Brown and then for the undersurface metallic layers I chose Supermetalic GSI SM01 Super Fine Silver to create a natural metal finish on the bottom of the wings, and GSI 8 Silver on some individual panels. The I applied slightly different shades RLM 76 GSI in accordance with material used in those areas. Before I mixed camouflage colours, I contacted Mr Poruba, one of the authours of excellent JaPo Fw 190D Camouflage and Markings book, and asked for help with the interpretation of shade dark green shade used on Black 1, which in his

The answer leaned toward RLM 83, so I mixed and slightly lightened (to allow for scale) RLM 83 to use on my Dora.I also applied some AK Interactive Worn Effects on the silver base and let this dry and then added some post shading

I then began to add some chipping and wear using a toothpick and a cloth. The I added some panel line washes too pick out the details, removing any excess in the direktivní of the airflow. I also applied some fuel and lubricant spills and stains in the appropriate places. After a matt coat I then brought all of the elements together, fixing the wheels, canopy and other smaller parts, and my Dora was complete MA

orn from a necessity by the USAF for a Suppression of Enemy Air Defences aircraft to fight in Vietnam, the F-105G was a successful ‘Wild Weasel’ platform using the two-seat Thunderchief airframe. The aircraft featured a powerful Pratt & Whitney J75 engine, modern ECM and EW systems that comprised of an RWR, AN/ALQ-105 blisters and the Lethal AGM-78 anti-radar missiles. The HobbyBoss F-105G is a very nice model with good details, and the cockpit is just awesome. I painted this A.MIG-0209 Light Grey and detailed with Black, White, yellow and Red. The only aftermarket part in this step was an Aeroscale Decal Sheet, to increase the realism of the instrument panel. The kit gives you the option to have the radar, engine, refueling probe and gun bay open; however, I choose to show only the

radar in the open position. I chose to paint the main piece with A.MIG-0219 Interior Green with a Black arm and then I used A.MIG-1004 Light Rust and A.MIG-1204 Streaking Rust to create some chipping using an old brush. With the airframe build done, it was now preparing for the painting stage. With construction complete I gave the entire airframe a coat of A.MIG-2005 Black Primer, and then began to apply the first coat A.MIG-0202 Tan from the A.MIG-7205 TAC and SEA 1960s-70s Set. Next came A.MIG-0004 Light Green and then A.MIG-026 Dark Green, with each colour being masked off once dry. To create a faded effect on the paint I add a mix of 50:50 of base colour and White. This added a deeper effect to the paint scheme and appeared more like natural weathering. The weapons load was something that needed special attention and my research showed the F-105G’s used a two AIM-45 Shrikes, one AGM-78 Standard ARM, a drop tank under the one wing and another on the centreline
pylon. The weapons and pylons were all suitably painted and then washed with A.MIG-1407 Engine Grime Effects thinned with Enamel Odourless Thinners. To finish off I added a gloss coat, applied the decals and sealed everything in with another coat of gloss. Now the model was ready for some weathering, and I began to work on the underside panel lines and rivets to make the model more visible and realistic, and here I again used thinned Engine Grime Effects, and any excess was removed using a cotton bud. The exhaust was painted using Ammo-Alclad Brass Metallic paint, and Dark Aluminum leading edges of the petals. The result was awesome. Now for the upper surfaces and I used A.MIG-1612 Green/Brown Panel Line Wash applied with a fine pointed brush direct into the recesses. I also add some chipping effects, again using a

fine pointed brush and Flat Black acrylic paint. Streaking Effects is another facet that can turn your model very attractive and realistic replica. I started that process making some random lines on the direction of airflow using the A.MIG-1203 Streaking Grime Effects. You can do this as many times as you need to, until you are happy with the look. I now applied some weathering effects on the drop tanks, and the peeling paint was done using Silver with a sponge and brush

application. A dirty look was achieved using A.MIG-3005 Medium Rust Pigments, which looks vey much like like the Vietnam earth colour. The landing gear legs and AGM-45 Shrike Rails were painted with Ammo-Alclad Polished Aluminum, and for weathering of the gear legs and tyres I used A.MIG-1611 Black Night Panel and A.MIG-1604 Pacific Dust Panel Line Washes to add some dirt. I also noticed on my reference pictures that some aircraft showed peeling paint on their tail section, especially around the engine access panels. So, with a fine pointed brush I re-created these effects. For the clear parts like sensors and formation/navigation lights, I used Ammo of MIG Red and Green and after a few final touches by ‘Wild Weasel’ was ready. MA
