I was so happy to see your article on Cheryl Ladd. I have always admired and respected her for thinking outside the box, beyond her career as an actress. Author, artist, humanitarian—the list goes on. I’m pleased to see her enjoying the benefits of her diverse career.
Patty Duke was such a great actress—even winning an Academy Award at such a young age. While it’s unfortunate that her mental illness took over at the prime of her life, sharing her story could not have been easy. At least she found happiness in the end.

Los Angeles surrogate mom Melissa Cook, whom we first wrote about in our March 14 issue, was granted a temporary stay on a court ruling that previously awarded custody of the triplet boys she delivered on Feb. 22 to their biological father. The March 30 ruling prohibits the infants’ father—a 50-year-old, single, deaf postal worker from Georgia who lives with his elderly parents—from removing the children from the LEGAL BATTLE state of California until a final decision is made by the court. “My OVER TRIPLETS concern has always been for the welfare of the children and what “I’m excited to is best for them,” says Cook, who believes the father, identified be reunited with only as C.M. in court papers, is unfit to care for the babies. In 1990 Madonna set out on her now-legendary Blond Ambition World Tour, a show that was often so provocative that it sparked international controversy, from arrest threats for public indecency in Canada to a call for boycott from the Pope. Luckily there were cameras there to catch it all, as seen in the 1991 documentary Truth or Dare. At the time, few knew the icon better than her gaggle of vogue-ing dancers. Six of them—starring in the new documentary Strike a Pose (about their lives 25 years later, premiering April 15 at the Tribeca Film Festival)—look back on their bond, the groundbreaking tour and the film that followed. Amy Schumer is usually the first person to poke fun at herself, but when she was named on the cover of Glamour magazine’s recent special issue devoted to fashion for sizes 12 and up, the comedian wasn’t laughing. “I go between a size 6 and an 8. . . . Young girls seeing my body type thinking that is plus size . . . not cool Glamour,” she posted on Instagram after seeing the issue that was sponsored by retailer Lane Bryant, which makes clothing exclusively in sizes 14 through 28. Later the Trainwreck star was quick to point out that her real issue was with the sexist aspect of terms denoting size. “Bottom line seems to be that these labels are unnecessary and reserved for women,” she said in a second post. And she’s not alone in fighting back against such language. “We have to stop categorizing and judging women based on their bodies,” Melissa McCarthy posted on Instagram on April 8. In a recent interview with Refinery 29, McCarthy elaborated: “Can you imagine . . . asking some of these guys I work with, ‘How do you keep your butt looking so good?’ It would be like, ‘What the f--- are you talking about? Why are you asking about the shape of my butt?’ ” Of the controversy, Lena Dunham recently told People, “I think fashion should be for all women. Remembering Merle Haggard, Beloved Country Outlaw
Country music is known for songs about truth—and nobody lived their music quite like Merle Haggard. With songs like “Okie from Muskogee,” “Fightin’ Side of Me” and “Mama Tried,” Haggard—who died on April 6, his 79th birthday, after a battle with pneumonia— established himself as one of the genre’s most authentically autobiographical songwriters. After years of being on the wrong side of the law, Haggard landed in San Quentin prison for attempted burglary at the age of 20. But he turned his life around behind bars, thanks to a visiting performer named Johnny Cash. “I charted a new course,” he told Parade in 2000 of seeing Cash’s famous show at the prison. Nine years later Haggard had his first of many No. 1 hits with “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive.” Haggard went on to record 38 No. 1 hits in a musical career that spanned nearly six decades and earned him a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame. His final project was the 2015 album Django and Jimmie with Willie Nelson. He never lost his unmistakable voice—“so smooth it’s like whiskey,” Miranda Lambert told People in 2010. “He sang about real things: cheating and drinking and jail and his mama and trains. That’s what country music is about.” —DANIELLE ANDERSON

This roaringly entertaining reboot of a Disney favorite is where the wild things are ADVENTURE We took Sassy, a gorilla trained in hand-signing and movie-review blurbing, to see Disney’s reboot of its beloved 1967 cartoon based on the Rudyard Kipling classic. Her comments: “I could go ape over this movie! I have never seen such believable CGI animals (let alone talking animals), and that includes the man-cub Mowgli!” (Actually, he’s played by human actor Neel Sethi.) “And I went bananas for Baloo the bear! If Bill Murray weighed 500 lbs. and wore fur, he’d be Baloo!” (In fact, Murray voices the character and sings “The Bare Necessities.”) “Director Jon Favreau doesn’t monkey around here: The pacing is sure-footed, and the story goes straight to the heart—I cried at the baby elephant! And did you get the reference to Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now? ” We didn’t, to be honest, but Sassy was right. So we set her free at the mulitplex, where she belongs. (April 15, PG)

DRAMA “Everyone’s paid to be everywhere,” says law-firm intern Christine, justifying the mess caused by her side career as an escort. “It’s called an economy.” This hardedged series is never as glibly cynical as that, thanks to Riley Keough’s performance—sullen, remote, very much of the Kristen Stewart school. Trying to make sense of Christine’s stake in this world of money and seduction is quite an Experience. (Starz, Sundays, 8 p.m.)

Besides the gossip and the squabbles, the crew frets over the gang violence plaguing Chicago’s South Side. Yes, it’s preachy as they organize a ceasefire, but Cut also comes with laughs. Why bother with monsters? People are scary enough. A heavy-metal band learns a hard lesson when they play for white supremacists in the wilds of Oregon. Kerry Washington in a supremely important role DRAMA At the start of Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings in 1991, the issue was his meager track record. Then Anita Hill, a law professor who had worked with him, testified that he had sexually harassed her. The national debate, which ended with Thomas on the bench and Hill retreating from a media storm, was transformative. The surprise of this movie is that Hill, played with quiet dignity by Scandal’s Washington, is less compelling than Wendell Pierce’s Thomas. He’s quiet too, a brooder, all but unknowable, until he delivers his angry, astonishing “high-tech lynching” speech—an electrifying political moment. Since then he has spoken barely a peep. FRESHMAN HARUKA WEISER IS MURDERED WALKING HOME TO HER DORM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS. AS POLICE ARREST A HOMELESS 17-YEAR-OLD, HER GRIEVING FAMILY AND FRIENDS RAISE NEW QUESTIONS ABOUT SAFETY ON CAMPUS By ELAINE ARADILLAS
SHATTERED DREAMS A talented dancer, Haruka Weiser had won a full scholarship to the University of Texas. She was found dead on April 5. “We will forever miss her,” said her family in a statement.

aruka Weiser spent the evening of Sunday April 3 as she often did, with her fellow dance students on the University of Texas at Austin campus, rehearsing for an upcoming performance. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., the petite 18-year-old from suburban Portland, Ore., packed her laptop and schoolwork into a blue duffel bag and called her roommate to say she was “on the way” home. Then, like many times before, she set out from the F. Loren Winship Drama Building for the five-minute walk to her dorm at UT’s Prather Hall. But unlike those other nights, she would never make it home. Two days later campus police oicers found Weiser’s lifeless body in a creek on a secluded stretch of campus, in the shadow of the university’s football stadium. Although police declined to disclose the cause of death, they said she was found with “obvious trauma to her body.” The death rocked the community of 50,000 students, where no murder had taken place on campus since the infamous 1966 shooting spree by sniper Charles Whitman that left 14 people dead. “Our students come to the University of Texas at Austin to live, learn and prepare for life,” university president Gregory Fenves said at an April 6 press conference, “and do not expect to be confrontedbytragedyduringtheiryears on campus.” Fenves called Weiser’s slaying “horrifying and incomprehensible” and an attack on the entire university. And parents and students—at UT and around the country—found themselves wondering just how safe college campuses are. A TIMELINE: WHAT HAPPENED TO WEISER?
THE SUSPECT
Meechaiel Khalil Criner, 17, was arrested April 8 and charged with one count of first-degree murder. He reportedly had disappeared from his Texarkana, Texas, home in August, before resurfacing in Austin.
It’s unclear as to how or why Criner landed in Austin, but Wadley told the station that her grandson was troubled. “He’s smart, real intelligent. But he had a problem,” she said. “He talks to himself and walks back and forth like he’s fighting himself.” His great-aunt Tommie Jackson expressed her sympathy for the Weiser family as well as her own. “My heart goes out to whoever this child’s family is, and my heart goes out to my family,” she said. “It’s hard for me to believe that he did something like this if he did it.”

Minchey, 20, a sophomore at UT. “It’s earth-shattering. It’s made everyone be a lot more cautious, and no one wants to go out at night.” On April 8 Austin police arrested 17-year-old Meechaiel Criner in connection with Weiser’s death. Authorities believe he is the individual seen on a surveillance video near the scene of the crime, wheeling around a girl’s red bicycle. On the morning after the murder, investigators responding to a report of a trash fire near the crime scene had found Criner in an abandoned building and escorted him to LifeWorks, a shelter for homeless youth. His bicycle, one which matched the one in the video, was taken by fire oicials and kept for “safekeeping,” according to the aidavit. After the surveillance video was made public, investigators returned to the abandoned building to check the ashes from the trash fire. They found a burned notebook with college-level coursework inside, as well as a Doc Martens boot, matching a pair worn by Weiser, according to an aidavit. Investigators also found a MacBook, similar to the one belonging to Weiser, with a Portland sticker on it. “We are very certain that the subject we have in custody is the suspect responsible for the death of this beautiful young woman,” Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo told reporters. Investigators don’t believe that Criner and Weiser had ever crossed paths

By the time she was 16, she was performing in principal roles with the Portland Ballet. “It really is a rush,” Weiser told a local newspaper in 2014. “There really is nothing like it.” Weiser’s high school boyfriend Nick Jurica, now a student at Juilliard, says Weiser maintained a rigorous school schedule filled with AP calculus and accelerated chemistry, all while dancing and preparing for college. She won a full dance scholarship to UT, where she planned to double major in premed and dance. “She never shied from a challenge. She was very determined,” he says. “Dance was such a big part of her life, but it wasn’t all she wanted to do.” Weiser, Jurica says, loved music (Fleetwood Mac and Beyoncé were favorite artists) as well as the outdoors. One year for her birthday she pushed friends to join her for an early-morning hike so they could see the sunrise. “We wanted to sleep in, but she kept telling us how beautiful it would be,” her high school friend Lily Summer said. “She was so peppy and we were all so tired.” Jurica calls her a beautiful spirit with confidence. “She didn’t wear a whole lot of makeup and was fine throwing her hair up in a ponytail,” he says. “She seemed really comfortable with who she

Her parents say they hope the death of their spirited daughter will push colleges to reexamine the issue of security on campus. “The pain of our sudden and tragic loss is unfathomable,” they said in a statement. “[A]s we struggle to understand why she was killed, if her death can somehow make it safer for a young woman to walk home, if it will prevent another assault or murder, then at least we could find some meaning behind an otherwise senseless and tragic death.” In addition, they say, they will at-
CAMPUS SAFETY
The murder of Haruka Weiser has raised concerns about security on college campuses nationwide. The College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas has even ofered to reimburse students for late-night cab fare for the rest of the semester. But the incidence of homicide on campuses is low. In 2014 the U.S. Department of Education recorded 16 incidents of manslaughter at more than 4,000 two- and fouryear colleges in the U.S. Still, experts tell People that the issue should not be ignored. “Murder on school grounds is few and far between, but students need to be aware,” says Steven J. Healy, chair of the National Center for Campus Public Safety’s advisory board. “With every new incident, law enforcement becomes more knowledgeable and more adept at protecting the community.” New safety measures, like mobile security apps that instantly send a user’s location and an alert message to campus police, are being introduced all the time, but the best way oicials can keep students safe is to remind them that acts of violence can happen anywhere—including on campus.

out a Cause, Splendor in the Grass and Gypsy, had reigned as one of Hollywood’s biggest icons for more than three decades. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning, believed to have happened after she slipped overboard while intoxicated. But the circumstances of that night—heated arguments and Wood’s lifelong fear of the water—have become the stuf of enduring mystery. In 2011 the L.A. County sherif reopened the investigation, stating that Wagner was “not a suspect.” Now Natasha, the only daughter of Wood and her second husband, British producer Richard Gregson, hopes to ensure that her mother’s legacy is no longer overshadowed by her untimely death. Along with her younger sister Courtney, 42, she has created Natalie, a fragrance based on her mother’s signature scent, Jungle Gardenia, as a tribute to the mom they adored. “I spent a lot of time trying to find the color in my life again, because she was our protector,” says Natasha, 45, sitting barefoot in the garden of her Venice, Calif., home. “I felt so safe with her, and then to have that ripped away—it’s like you lose your skin, and so nothing makes sense. Nothing is the same.” Although Wood was one of the most glamorous stars of her era, at home she was a mom who read Russian fairy tales at bedtime and who always had “a sense of adventure and mischief,” Natasha says. “Don’t go.” Natalie Wood’s daughter remembers saying those two words to her mother before Wood went sailing of Catalina Island that weekend. “I wanted her to stay home,” says Natasha Gregson Wagner. “I had a funny feeling. I don’t know if it was just being a child who didn’t want her mom to leave or what it was, but I didn’t want her to go.” Still, the West Side Story star, 43, kept her plan for a getaway with her husband, Robert Wagner, on their yacht Splendour, along with her Brainstorm costar Christopher Walken. “I remember she was getting dressed and putting on [her perfume] Jungle Gardenia,” says Natasha, who was 11 at the time. “They were getting ready to go on the boat. I was hugging her and telling her I loved her and to have a great trip. She had an angora sweater on, and it was very soft. That’s my last memory of her.” Natasha was at a sleepover when she heard a radio report that her mother had drowned. When she got home, her shaken stepfather confirmed the news. “My daddy Wagner told me,” she says softly. “It was just the unthinkable. It was like my life was in color—and she died, and then it was black-and-white.” Wood’s death on Nov. 29, 1981, shocked the world: The dark-eyed beauty who beguiled audiences as the girl who believes in Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street, then starred in Rebel With-

Their Beverly Hills home was a place of “toys and parties and dinners, and my mom in her nightgown, and animals everywhere,” she recalls. suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills in 1966. In later years she attended daily psychoanalysis, and some say she drank to excess. “It wasn’t until I got older and learned about her and talked to my dad or their friends that I realized she had struggles,” says Natasha. “She worked hard on herself because she didn’t want to be a casualty of her childhood. She strove for happiness.” She found it with Wagner. The first time Wood saw him, when she was 10 years old, she told her mother she wanted to marry him. She did—twice. First in 1957 (they divorced five years later) and again in 1972, after Wood divorced Gregson and Wagner divorced his second wife, Marion Marshall, with whom he had daughter Katie, 51. Wagner and Wood welcomed Courtney in 1974. Says Natasha: “They were meant to be together.” After Wood’s death, Wagner and Gregson agreed all three girls would live with Wagner. Gregson remembers taking Natasha to say goodbye to her mom. “She was standing in front of her coffin and spoke with Natalie for two or three minutes and put a note under her hand,” he says. “It was important for her to see her.” Says Natasha: “I was so lucky that I had two dads who were deeply committed to helping me through.” She grew incredibly close to Wagner, who “had to be both mom and dad,” says Natasha. And she saw his grief up close. “Before my mom died, my dad was a happygo-lucky person and the life of the party,” she says. “After she died, there was a heaviness and a sadness to him that hadn’t been there before.” (Now 86, Wagner
went on to marry actress Jill St. John in 1990.) In turn Natasha sheltered her sister Courtney. “She had my mom for less years than me,” she says. “I almost didn’t go to college in Boston because I didn’t want to leave her.” While Courtney has struggled (in 2012 she was arrested for drug possession but not charged), Natasha says her younger sister “is focusing really hard on her well-being, and, God willing, she will continue to do great.” Therapy, time and especially her spirited daughter Clover have helped Natasha feel whole again. “Before I was a mom, I felt so much like a motherless daughter, and now that part of me is healed,” she says. “Not only am I a mother to my daughter and stepchildren but also to my mom in a strange way. → Natasha and Natalie were very connected. You could feel it when they looked at each other. [After Natalie’s death] I tried to keep her mom’s memory alive for her. We were all so shattered by the loss, and we were all hanging on to each other. You just take it moment by moment and hope that it gets better. As a man and a father, you hope that she can somehow step forward. We’ve hung on to each other through the years, and Natasha means the world to me. Her mother was very special and loving, and Natasha has tried to carry that on. [To see her as a mom] was so moving because it was a continuation of life, a continuation of Natalie. It’s miraculous. Natalie talked about being a grandmother someday. She would have been a wonderful grandmother.

The British aristocracy never met anyone like Kathleen Kennedy, the fourth child of Joseph P. Kennedy, the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain, and his wife, Rose. Nicknamed Kick for her high-spirited personality, she was her father’s favorite: charming, outgoing and fiercely driven. “She was the star of the family,” says Barbara Leaming, whose new biography Kick Kennedy: The Charmed Life and Tragic Death of the Favorite Kennedy Daughter, excerpted here, ofers a fresh look at JFK’s sister who died in a plane crash in 1948. “Because she was only 28, we don’t know what would have happened to her,” Leaming tells People’s Liz McNeil. “For her family, Kick was the source of tremendous joy. After she was gone, much of that joy was extinguished.” When Kick arrived in London with her family in 1938, her adventurous spirit delighted and surprised Britain’s stodgy aristocratic world. [She] was, if truth be told, quite plain in appearance. Her hair was a shade of mousy brown, and verged on being frizzy. Her shoulders were also unfortunate, set much too high and her neck was far too short. In height, she was not quite five foot three and her figure was “at that point anyway” on the lumpy side. She did not hang back shyly or demurely. The

newcomer was willing to laugh at herself—her mistakes, her gaucheries, and even her physical flaws—in a way that was simply unknown among English girls. In 1938, she met William “Billy” Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, one of Britain’s richest bachelors—and a Protestant—at a dinner party. They quickly became an item, and Billy took Kick to Chatsworth, the 1,000-acre estate he’d inherit when his father died and Billy became the Duke of Devonshire. Beyond its doors were 175 rooms and miles of corridors filled with treasures accumulated over centuries: astonishing collections of paintings, drawings, manuscripts, books, minerals, furniture and jewels. Kick’s parents opposed the interfaith romance. [Kick, who was always Rose’s protector] knew that her involvement with Billy had the potential of causing great pain to her mother. Rose lived with a husband who was not only compulsively unfaithful, but who went so far as to parade his women in front of her. The opinion of the world meant much to Rose Kennedy who, however improbably, chose to regard her family as exemplary Catholics whose behavior set a standard for others to follow. After Britain declared war on Germany in 1939, Kick

was forced to return to the U.S. By 1943 she was back in England—with Billy, who proposed marriage but demanded their children be raised Protestant. On this vital matter, Billy, who in their prior relations, had always been so kind, genial and even malleable, made it clear that he intended to be absolutely firm. Initially she pinned her hopes on old Joe Kennedy’s being able to obtain a dispensation on her behalf through his contacts at the Roman Catholic hierarchy. But in the end, [they] were unable to secure the special arrangement that would permit Kick to marry Billy and bring up their children as Protestant while she remained in the good graces of the Catholic Church. Rose seemed confident that in the absence of dispensation, Kick would not dare go forward. Kick informed her parents she would marry in a registry office. Rose recorded in her diary that she was at once “horrified” and “heartbroken.”Tellingly, foremost among her considerations at the moment, was the extent to which Kick’s marriage to a Protestant would constitute “a blow to the family prestige.” Only Kick’s brother Joe Jr. attended the wedding. Even more distressing was a newspaper report that her mother was extremely ill and had had to be
hospitalized as a consequence of her upset over the impending nuptials. Kick [wrote to Rose] and described the wedding, her pink crepe wedding dress, and the jewels and precious giftsthat had been lavished upon her. She begged Rose not to be sad about anything. “I’m very very happy,” she emphasized. “And quite certain about what I’ve done.” Soon after D-Day, June 6, 1944, Billy returned to France to fight and wrote Kick of a possible future without him. “I’ll just say that if anything should happen to me, I shall be wanting you to try to isolate our life together, to face its finish, and to start a new one as soon as you feel you can. I hope that you will marry again quite soon—someone good & nice.” That September, Billy was killed in battle. Joe Jr. was killed in action the month before. Kick’s immediate reaction, she would later say, was to feel “numb.” That evening, she accompanied her family to dinner at the restaurant Le Pavillon where, in typical Kennedy fashion, Billy was rarely if at all mentioned. Rose Kennedy promptly threw herself into prayers and Masses for her daughter’s late husband. To Kick’s distress, there was an undertone to her mother’s attitude, as if Rose felt that Billy’s death was punishment for the apostasy of their marriage, and even that his demise provided a chance for his widow to get right with the Catholic Church. She returned to London and began an afair with Peter Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, a married drinker and gambler even richer than Billy. Once Peter promised to leave his wife, Kick told her parents. Rose Kennedy stipulated that if Kick committed the sin of marrying a divorced man, she would promptly be cut of from the family—not just from her parents, but from her siblings as well. The threat left Kick reeling. Kick and Peter arranged to meet her “Darling Daddy” in Paris and appeal for his help. Two days before, they flew to Paris en route to Cannes. On an impulse [Peter] and Kick called some racing-world friends in Paris and invited them for lunch on the Champs-Elysées. When he and Kick returned to the aircraft some two and a half hours later, the pilot insisted that the turbulent weather conditions had made it unsafe to take of; any attempt to reach Cannes would require flying directly through a massive thunderstorm. In defiance of the elements, Peter angrily demanded that the aircraft take of without delay. The plane crashed, killing both, and it was Joe Sr. who identified his daughter’s body. Joe acknowledged that the young woman with the broken jaw and the deep laceration on the right side of her face was indeed his child.

‘When Billy died, Kick lost the man she loved and a way of life, a future she’d staked everything on’ —AUTHOR BARBARA LEAMING
A Sister’s Story “It was a heartbreaking love story, and it’s also a piece of history,” says Leaming of Kick’s short life. “She walks in just as the power of the British aristocracy is vanishing forever. It’s almost like the last chapter of Downton Abbey.”

“Kym’s breakfast is perfection!” says dietitian Keri Glassman of nutritiouslife.com. “Ezekiel is my favorite—no sugar—and avocado is loaded with healthy fat.” And while she praises Johnson’s “hydrating and cleansing” tea, Glassman notes a handful of nuts or an apple with peanut butter would give Johnson more fuel. The hummus and carrot snack, meanwhile, is “packed with fiber and protein.” By Michelle Ward Trainor

melancholy.” I don’t know why I am sad, I am just sad. So I try to shift my energy. If I let my thoughts take over, it will ruin my day, so I try to not do that anymore. I try to be present. But that comes with being in your 30s. You’ve had such an incredible transformation. What has this journey been like? If you had asked me two years ago if I would have the body I have now, I would have said, “No way, my body can’t do that.” I have always made excuses, like, “I am big-boned” or “I could never be a size whatever.” I still don’t think, “My body is bangin’.” I don’t think like that, and I don’t know if I ever will. I don’t weigh myself. I don’t believe in numbers. I know I have lost so much weight, but I don’t think I will ever be satisfied. And I kind of like that, because I never want to be that unhealthy again. Why don’t you think you’ll ever be satisfied? Well, if I am on vacation with [sisters] Kendall

I had a great one-on-two in basketball with my boys [Cayden, 8, and Hayes, 7], and I took them both. I just destroyed them. [Laughs] No, I have to watch what I’m doing. I’ve had four knee operations because I play really, really hard. I wish I could play like I used to for them.
Last time my kid made me laugh My little girl [Grace, 5] is liking the cartoons that the boys have grown out of. And so when she wants to
watch them, they start to moan and groan. She’ll look at them and say, “Well then, shut your eyes!”
Last recurring dream I’m in a play and I don’t know any of the lines. And people are saying, “You’re not ready! How could you do this to us?” And I’m thinking, “F---, I’m not in this play!” Maybe it’s because I try to be really proactive in getting things right in my life.
Last time I was nervous I get nervous when I have to speak to a large group with prepared
remarks. It doesn’t come easy to me. Maybe I take it too seriously, but I always feel like I have to make it worth their while.
Last DIY project Grace decided that she wanted to catch a leprechaun, so we had to set out a trap. We built a box, and she put a little rainbow and some “gold” inside. It had a string so when the leprechaun grabbed the gold, the string would unravel and trap him. We didn’t catch any, but she had it all worked out. Reported by Julie Jordan
