VIRGEN DE VICO, A SECONDARY SCHOOL IN ARNEDO
Arnedo is a town in the province of La Rioja. The population is about 16 000 people. Most people work in industry, especially shoe-making. In Arnedo there are two primary schools and two secondary schools. We visited IES (Instituto Educación Secundaria) Virgen De Vico. This is a secondary school with three different specialities: Administration and Finances, Leather and Shoe Designing and Electronics. The total number of students is 453 and 52 teachers.
12 teachers from Poland were welcomed by the headmaster Mr Luis Miguel Moreno and the vice-principal Mr Javier Garcia. A member of staff Mrs Ana Jimenez kindly attended our teachers during the stay in Spain. The headmaster presented the Spanish educational system.
We were shown different classrooms especially the vocational studies rooms and laboratories.
Spanish vocational schools have all the necessary facilities, machinery and materials for vocational teaching.
Arnedo is famous for its shoes. We could go and visit one of the most important shoe factories called Chiruca. We were explained the process of designing and producing the footwear. A lot of skilled employees come from IES Virgen De Vico school. We could see the quality tests that the shoes suffer: the leather stress, the gore-tex waterproof inner sock check, the density of soles.
Improvement and focus on the future – this is the aim of IES Virgen De Vico. The entire process starts in the classroom. There are a lot of things we teachers have to learn : the Poles in Spain and necessarily, tomorrow, the Spanish in Poland.
