he ZSU-57/2 is a selfpropelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG), which was developed during the early
1940’s and entered service in the Soviet Army in February 1955, and some ZSU-57s remain in service with Peshmerga forces and in Syria. Fitted with two 57mm air-cooled guns, this tracked vehicle has a crew of six (a commander, driver, two loaders and two gunners), however, it is not fitted with radar and is not designed to shoot down aircraft flying at high speed. The chassis uses components of the T-54/55, but has one less road wheel per side. I have always developed an interest Soviet Vehicles, and

opening the box, my first impressions were very positive. The kit is very well detailed, with nineteen sprues, etched parts, copper cables, individual tracks links, a fully detailed turret interior and painting and marking schemes for four SPAAG users - Syrian, two Soviets and Finnish.
However, despite the excellent quality of the kit, I decided to apply some minor improvements, adding a Voyager antenna mount, two barrels from Aber and a set of tracks from Masterclub. Construction began with the lower hull, and here assembly went smoothly, but be careful to align the suspension arms correctly, and the wheels were sanded to obtain a smooth appearance. The etched parts provided in the kit are accurate, and the engine grille mesh screens add a very realistic touch. The construction of the chassis

Scale 1:35 / Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun went smoothly, however, construction of the turret was a little more complicated, and the assembly of the guns is an important step, as they are in two parts. If you want to use the two 57mm barrels provided in the kit, you have to bore out the muzzle brake with a 0.9mm drill, so however, as mentioned I used Aber replacements. Work continued on the turret began by placing the seats and the racks for the 57mm artillery shells. The ZSU-57/2 is equipped with a prominent rear turret storage basket which has been well reproduced, and the etched pieces can be bent with the jig provided in the kit and the glued into place. The rest of the model went together easily,
and I was soon ready to paint. To begin I applied a coat of Tamiya Grey Primer before I added a coat of Tamiya XF-2 White. Finally, I turned my attention to the tracks, and again as already noted I used a set from Masterclub, which were suitably painted and detailed. My ZSU-57/2 was to be in the threetone ‘splinter’ scheme of the Finnish Army, and was perhaps the most challenging part of the build. The first task was to find some reliable reference images, and after a brief Internet search, I came across a selection of excellent shots of a ZSU at the Parola Museum in Finland. To replicate the vehicles camouflage sheme, I used Tamiya Acrylics paints, and began with the application of the base colour which was Tamiya XF-4 (60%) mixed with X-8 (20%) and Gunze Sanyo H320 (2%). Once dry, I masked off the first layer of
I also added some lubricant and engine staining to the rear grille

One final touch was to add an Albion Alloys antennae
camouflage and the applied a Forest Green mix, using Tamiya XF-74 (70%) + XF-67 (30%). This was the again masked of with Tamiya tape and the final colour Black XF-1 was added. Then, the masking tape was removed and the model was then set aside to dry. I planned to keep the weathering to a minimum, as Finish Army vehicles are well maintained. I just wanted to show an accumulation of dirt on the running gear and on the horizontal surfaces of the chassis. So I began with a light brown filter in order to blend the camouflage scheme, and then I added a pin-wash. Some of the details were then picked out with A.MIG-1005 Dark Brown Wash for Green Vehicles. Then, I applied
some Sand and Earth pigments on the chassis and running gear, and finally added some oil or grease stains in the appropriate places. The decals for the Finnish version were applied on the sides of the turret, and finally the smaller details such as the position lights were painted in, and an Albion Alloys metal rod antenna added. With that the project was complete.

ike many modellers was I attracted to the unique colours and lines of Finnish Camouflage. Its ‘splinter

time with lots of subjects. As I mentioned I was drawn to the Finnish vehicles and specifically the Leopard 2, as it is one of my favourite tanks. With the Leopard tank any number of types and variants can be built, keeping you busy for a long time. My initial challenge with building a Finnish Leopard was the additional and modified parts that are required. Luckily KMT came to the rescue with an outstanding update set that mates seamlessly with the excellent Meng-Model kit. The KMT kit comes with a new upper turret due to the unique anti slip coating on the Finnish vehicle. It also comes with new rear stowage bins, side skirts, storage boxes (with amazing anti-slip detail) as well as new handles for the turret. The build was straightforward and uncomplicated. I started with the tracks, wanting to get them out of the way as soon as possible. I then went on to build the suspension next so I could paint and begin the weathering of the lower hull. With the suspension complete I painted the model in a mix of Tamiya colours that began with NATO Green lightened and brightened a bit to better represent the Finnish camouflage. I painted the tracks by first spraying them in a Light Grey, then I masked off the rubber parts using tape. I then randomly sprayed

light, Medium and Dark Rust, finishing off with a light application of Steel Weathering Powder. Once satisfied I removed the mask and lightly dry brushed an even lighter shade of Grey to simulate wear on the rubber track pads. Having completed painting I started to weather the lower hull and suspension. I began by mixing some pigments with plaster and enamel paints, and applied this to the lower hull and to the road wheels. I kept this a medium shade of Brown to represent fresh dried mud. For some contrast I applied pigments and washes of a lighter shade of Brown, especially on the road wheels where it would be warmer, to show dried mud. Lastly I applied some clear wet effects to better represent the heavy build-up and retention of small amounts of water in the road wheels. Once the lower hull was completed to my satisfaction I began masking off the rest of the model in preparation for painting. The Finnish Leopard has a very distinct and attractive splinter type camouflage that is actually fairly easy to recreate, assisted by the straight lines and hard edges to the scheme. Having previously applied the lightest colour, I masked off the second, Darker Green, and carefully to stay within the masked
lines, I quickly filled the areas in. Lastly I masked and painted the Black, which was actually more of Panzer Grey than Black. Once dry, I picked out details with a paintbrush I took into account the overall good shape of Finnish vehicles and kept the wear and tear fairly light. Satisfied I sealed the paint with a clear acrylic floor cleaner and carefully applied the decals, consulting my references. The mud and dirtiness of the lower hull was brought up to the side skirts using a layered effect. I then dusted the model with some Buff and Earth shades through the airbrush, and then put some weathering agents on a brush, blowing them off with airbrush air. I started with a lighter colour to simulate dried mud, and then added a darker tone to represent fresher mud. I also carefully pulled a brush down the side of the model to simulate dripping and dried fluids that altered the mud splatter. Last but not least I gave an effort into painting the figures in order to give the model some life. Included with the figures were three ruck sacks to hand on the turret side. Overall this project was a great deal of fun and the appropriate challenge for me. I am now hooked on the Meng-Model Leopards, and plan on doing more in the future.
developed by Krauss-Maffei in the 1970s for the West German Army. The tank first entered service in 1979 and succeeded the earlier Leopard 1 as the main battle tank of the German Army. Various versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and twelve other European countries, as well as several non-European nations. The Leopard 2 was used in Kosovo with the German Army and has also seen action in Afghanistan with the Danish and Canadian forces and also in Syria. There are two main development batches of the tank, the original models up to Leopard 2A4, which have vertically faced turret armour, and the ‘improved’ batch, namely the Leopard 2A5 and newer versions, which have angled arrow-shaped turret applique armour, together with other improvements. All models feature digital fire control systems and laser rangefinders, a fully stabilized
main gun and coaxial machine gun, and advanced night vision and sighting equipment (first vehicles used a low-light level TV system or LLLTV, whilst thermal imaging, was introduced later on). The tank has the ability to engage moving targets while moving over rough terrain. The Finnish Army originally bought 124 2A4s from surplus German stocks in 2003. Of these, twelve were converted into bridge laying and combat engineering tanks and twelve were disassembled for use as spares, leaving 100 operational tanks. In 2009, the Finnish Army bought fifteen more German surplus Leopard 2A4s for spare parts, bringing the total number of Finnish Leopard 2A4s to 139. On 16 January 2014, Finland agreed with the Netherlands to purchase 100 used Leopard 2A6NL tanks and in 2015, most of the Leopard 2A4s were moved into reserve duties.
The build was straightforward and uncomplicated WWW.SAMPUBLICATIONS.COM

box is huge, and you could get three kits inside it! The good news is that there are some amazing details inside! I begin by working on the suspension, and there are quite a few parts here, and its not the easiest easy stage of the build! Just note - do not glue part A32 to B2. B2 must be first glued to the chassis, otherwise is impossible to know where to glue it the A32! Some patience will be needed to finish the suspension, and drill a hole in the centre of the wheels, otherwise they are not going to stay in place. When you add parts B35 and B36 onto the chassis I also drilled a hole again to allow a perfect fit, and add A34 only after the complete set is in place. The rest of the build was fairly easy. There is the option to leave all the doors and hatches open but as there is nothing on the inside left them closed. I also drilled out the gun barrel for a better look.
With the build complete, I was ready to paint, and began with a coat of AK Interactive White Primer and Microfiller AK759. Then to add some shadows, I applied Black into certain areas. Several thin coats of Gunze Hobby Color H79 Sandy Yellow follwed as the base colour, and this was followed with a second colour, Gunze Hobby Color H47 Red Brown. To blend the two shades I added some applied AK Interactive AK065 Africa Corps Filter to fade the paintwork ready for some weathering. This was then left to dry for a couple days before adding some oil paint. So using lighter colours like White, Buff, Dust and Light Sand (ABT001, AB035, ABT003 and ABT155) from Abteilung 502 the weathering was intensified. Applying small dots in the highest areas added some highlights, especially in areas more exposed to the sun. Streaking was also done again using oils, to give a richness to the paint, and Abteilung 502 Matt
Effect Thinner ABT112 was used to remove any excess. Once dry it was time to add some shadowing. Into the recesses I applied Raw Umber, Sepia and Black (ABT007, ABT002 and ABT110) oil paints, and left them to cure. The next step was a pin-wash to make the details come to life. Then a coat of Tamiya X-35 Satin Varnish was applied to protect the paint. Next some AK Interactive AK045 Dark Brown was used as another light wash and any excess removed with a cotton bud. Once done you will be able to see the richness of the various paint tones. It was then time to add a few warm colours, to create some scratches and imperfections using ABT020 Faded Dark Yellow and ABT010 Yellow. These were then completely blended in. Time for some chipping, and here I used Meng-Color MC-248 Ochre Earth, applied with a fine brush. To simulate the deepest chips and scratches AK 711 Chipping WWW.SAMPUBLICATIONS.COM

Colour was used, again using a very fine brush. The decals – well five to be exact – were added using AK Decal Adapter Solution AK582. to protect the decals and the paint for the last stage of the weathering process. I wanted to represent a vehicle that had been subjected to the desert climate, so it should be sun faded and present dust, not only accumulated dust/sand but ‘fresh dust’ from the movement of other vehicles in the
wind. For this i used one of my favourite weathering products - AK Dust and Dirt Deposits! Once a coat of AK Interactive AK 190 Matt Varnish was applied, and next I wanted to represent some superficial dust, and I used AK 065 Africa Korps Filter was used to change the colour a little. This way it will looks more like dust than sand. The track were not easy to put together, but with patience they look pretty good. To colour them I used AK 757 Black Primer and Microfiller, and once dry a coat of AK 083 Track Wash was applied and allowed dry. This was followed by some AK Dust and Dirt deposits for a better look. To finish a coat AK 183 Ultra Matte Varnish brought everything together.

T
his was a diorama that I had begun to plan when I built and reviewed the Zvezda Tiger II. I have always been intrigued
by the final days of the war in Europe being played out in Berlin, and the last stand being made by the desperate defenders. This kit allowed me to show such a scene, a battle worn Tiger II thrown into action supporting a defiant group of infantry as they plan their next move against the oncoming might of the Red Army. To add a human perspective I also used some civilian figures portraying a scene within the diorama where the officer in charge has reluctantly turned his back on his wife and children and instructed them to flee west as he makes his choice to remain with his men for the final battle to come. I chose many components to put my diorama together, including the Tiger, a mixture of plastic and resin figures, a plaster building, resin roadway and numerous other parts and accessories from the spares box. Base and Building The base area of my scene was to be a resin roadway section supplied by Fields of Glory, who also supplied the plaster ruined town house, which I chose as the backdrop to the diorama. The building was a great casting with good detail, which I primed and then airbrushed with suitable base colours. Next it was detailed with a variety of Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics and then some Ammo of MIG and Lifecolour washes. I added some fittings

at the exterior and scratch built a front door from thin balsa wood strips on a cardboard backing. I also used some scale planks from the spares box to board up the ground floor windows. Using some dry transfers and plasticard I also made up a suitable sign to fill out the front of the ruin. To enhance the street I made my own pavement sections cut from foam board, and spent a couple of hours cutting each slab and kerb stone
Here we see a battle worn Tiger II thrown into action supporting a defiant group of German infantry as they plan their next move into the surface, adding damage and detail where required. The entire base received a base coat of various Browns and Greys with my airbrush, and then I picked out certain paving slabs and road detail by hand. All the detail and extras would be added next, including a Tamiya lamppost and modified bicycle, an Italeri Tank Trap, more Fields of Glory debris and various signs from my ‘spares-box’ and some assorted furniture. All this was fixed in place with household filler and PVA glue, carefully building up several layers over the course of a few evenings. Everything here was detailed with acrylics and weathered with various pigments before attaching the tank and all the figures. Zvezda King Tiger The Tiger II is an impressive release from Zvezda and was to be used pretty much as I had finished it for its previous build.. The figures in the turret were a mixture of Tamiya and Dragon Panzer crew sets of which I

put a couple together to fit as I went. For the diorama though I carried out further weathering to fit in more with the urban setting. I mainly used MIG Light Dust and Concrete Pigments, dry brushed around the lower surfaces of the vehicle and the engine deck and turret roof. Further debris and rubble was fixed across some of the upper surfaces where required. Wehrmacht Figures The figures were going to be very important to the scene, as well as telling a story they would also be the most I had yet to put in one place! I chose a very nice recent set from Masterbox and an older one from Dragon, some of which I planned to modify. I had decided to finish their uniforms in the late war splinter camouflage scheme, itself quite a daunting challenge. I tried two schemes as I wanted to show some difference in colour and variety, and some were finished with ‘rain marks’, others without. This was a time

correct position. A simple name plate from Name-it! was added last and then I was done! This was a very rewarding project, which whilst time consuming, was always an interesting challenge which certainly pushed what I am capable of, but more importantly was great fun to put together and was certainly very rewarding to see through to completion. consuming part of the build but worth it I think as I was quite pleased how they turned out. They were all detailed with Vallejo acrylics and I also added weapon slings and straps made from thinly cut and painted masking tape. Helmet straps and camouflage netting were also added where appropriate. Refugee Figures The family of the German officer in my scene were two separate resin offerings from the
Stalingrad range of refugee figures, again supplied Fields of Glory. They both suited my diorama very well with their realistic natural poses and the chance to add a human element to the story. They went together very well with minimal clean up and after priming I detailed them with Vallejo acrylics and applied some very minor weathering. All these elements eventually came together on the finished base and after a couple of attempts I was happy with everything in its

ble to carry a greater payload than a four-engine B-17 Flying Fortress, the single-engine A-1 Skyraider was considered one of the finest attack and close air support aircraft ever built. Skyraider’s proved critical during the Korean War and over the jungles of North Vietnam. The airplane that became the AD Skyraider (redesignated A-1 in 1962) evolved from a 1943 Navy decision to combine the dive-bombing and torpedo mission into one aircraft. First flown in 1945, the Skyraider entered US Navy service the following year. Later nicknamed ‘Spad’ for its ‘old-school’ design and appearance, reminiscent of the famous World War I aircraft, the Skyraider earned a reputation for ruggedness that not only packed a punch, but also brought back many an airman, despite taking heavy damage from enemy fire. Some AD pilots also trained for an atomic war, practicing long-range flights to deliver nuclear bombs at low altitude. A-1s were also part of the first attacks against North Vietnam following the Tonkin Gulf Incident, and in June 1965, a pair of Skyraiders even shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-17 in air-to-air combat. It was perhaps in the ‘Sandy’ Combat Search And Rescue role the USAF Skyraider earned most respect, and its heavy payload and long loiter time proved vital in rescue of downed airman in Southeast Asia. The Skyraider was also used by the air forces of South Vietnam, France, Cambodia, Chad and Gabon, and the Royal Navy operated a dedicated airborne early warning version from her aircraft carriers, and the Swedish Air Force used the Skyraider as a target tug. All told, 3,180 Skyraiders rolled off the Douglas Aircraft Company assembly line, and in this new Datafile by Andy Renshaw and Andy Evans; the Skyraider story is brought to life. Packed with many never before seen images, concise text, colour profiles, technical diagrams, scale plans and how to model the Skyraider in popular scales, this book is a must have for the enthusiast and modeller alike.

I
was so excited when I had the chance to build the new Tamiya Valentine, as the quality of any new tooling from Tamiya
always surprises me as it provides a hassle free build experience. I started with the multi-piece hull, and assembling the basic structure was easy, and I found that the pieces just clicked into place almost without needing any glue. The high quality of the plastic also allowed me to easily cut through the spruegate connection points without having to do any sanding. I decided to assemble the wheels before attaching them and the suspension, and again these are just so well engineered I had no trouble at all. Tamiya provide link and length tracks for this kit so to keep the direction of the tracks in mind, I marked their orientation and then attached the tracks to the chassis. I worked the larger length sections first and then created the link portions and moulded them around the sprocket while the glue was still flexible. The turret lacks any serious internal detail but based on its shallow design, I decided that

the opening would end up quite dark and shadowed, and that an open hatch would provide a far more pleasing look. The main gun features an interesting design with a single poly-cap to create the traversal. The gun itself is of course slide-moulded, and only light

sanding around its circumference was required. I decided to make the antennas by heating up some spare sprue and then pulling it into a fine rod with a pair of pliers. Once it was trimmed to a suitable length I attached it with plastic cement. As can sometimes be the case I lost two of the rear grab handles

Tamiya always provides a hassle free build experience to the ‘carpet monster’, and after as much searching as my patience could take I decided to just scratchbuild a pair from a paperclip using pliers, and once the kit was primed these handles were indistinguishable from the ones included in the kit. With the build complete I added a Black Primer coat and then a spray of Mr Surfacer 1500. This dual primer approach keeps the deepest recesses black but allows for a more neutral colour. I then airbrushed on the base colour using a mix of Vallejo Ochre, Light Brown and White. I then added more White to this mix and sprayed some rough highlights on areas of I wanted to draw focus to. I then used Vallejo Dark Earth Wash straight through my airbrush to add some shadow and grime effects. I concentrated on deeper areas and tried to simulate the
effect of gravity and moisture on dirt. I also painted the tracks at this point using a paper mask to save the areas I had already worked on. Then I airbrushed a mix of Tamiya Hull Red and Black over the tracks. Once this was done I did some drybrushing with Vallejo Dark Steel. I then used a fine tipped brush and painted in some chips and scratches using Vallejo German Black-Brown, and then added Vallejo Sand as a highlight. I then applied the markings with more chipping to blend them in. Then I sealed in all the effects with two light coats of Tamiya Flat. I decided to add a light general wash to the entire vehicle using a mix of Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre oils. I followed this with a darker pin-wash of the same mix with a small amount of Black added. I concentrated on
details. I also used some earth coloured oils to paint the exhaust and give it a rusty look. To fade out the surface, and add a light dust effect I thinned down some Tamiya Buff and misted it all over. I then applied a heavier concentration the lower areas. I followed this with a heavier application of Ammo of MIG Africa Dust Effect, using it to wash some areas where dust would accumulate. Over the top of this effect, and using the enamel as a kind of glue, I applied a mix of some light pigments I ground from chalks. Finally I painted the machine gun with Vallejo Steel mixed with a drop of Black, and then dry brushed it again with Straight Steel. I decided not to use the included Tamiya figures, and instead opted to add a figure made by Ultracast, suitably painted and weathered. With that I called the build complete.

Spähpanzer Luchs (Lynx) T he Spähpanzer Luchs (Lynx) was a German 8x8 amphibious reconnaissance AFV in service since 1975 with the
German Army, who used 408 of these vehicles in their armoured reconnaissance battalions. It was developed by DaimlerBenz and replaced the M41 and the SPz 11-2 Kurz. The all-wheel drive Luchs made by Thyssen-Henschel and was well armoured, and had and NBC protection system and was characterised by its low-noise running. The eight large low-pressure tyres have run-flat properties. At speeds up to about 50 km/h, all four axles can be steered. As a special feature, the vehicle is equipped with a rear-facing driver with his own driving position. The Luchs was fully amphibious and

could surmount water obstacles quickly and independently using propellers at the rear, and the fold back trim vane at the front, and the 20mm Rheinmetall Mk 20 Rh 202 gun was similar to the one in the Marder IFV. An upgrade to the Luchs A1 starting in 1986 included the incorporation of a thermal observation and gunnery system, which replaced the original infra-red/white light night vision system mounted to the left of the turret. VHF radios have been the German SEM 25 / SEM 35 FM short range radios from LORENZ. HF long-range radio was the AN/GRC 9 with the LV 80 100 Watts RF amplifier for Morse Code. This was replaced by the XK 405 100 Watts SSB HF radio made by Rohde & Schwarz in Germany and the incorporation of the new SEM 80/90 radio system gave it the designation SpPz 2 Luchs A2. The Luchs was eventually replaced by the Fennek in German service.

akom’s 1:35 Spähpanzer 2 Luchs A1/A2 breathes new life into a unique subject that has needed attention, as Revell
was the other manufacturer to issue a kit of this eight-wheeled armoured reconnaissance vehicle back in 1988. In the box, I found the parts had some excellent surface detail, and had components for the A1 and A2 versions that included different optics and tyres. It also included a pre-coated etched fret for extra realism. The instruction sheet came in bookletstyle with side-by-side instruction for each variant. I sort of felt that the kit was over engineered, as for example, the headlamps were made of five parts, which I think could be simplified. However, this didn’t go the same way for the workable and yet extraordinary complex running gears. Despite having spent most of my time constructing these parts, the extra detail was worth the effort. The only problem was that almost all had very fine but visible seam lines, and cleaning required a lot of time and patience.

The periscopes are made of clear plastic. Cut strips of 2mm x 1.5mm masking tape to cover the clear optic areas before painting
Other parts that required attention included: The MG-3 ring mount above the left hatch had three supporting legs but one of them was short by 1.5mm so I levelled the other two The instructions ask you to install handrails and guardrails at the beginning, however, as they are very prone to breaking, I would leave them to a later stage when all the major parts have been glued Constructing the complex suspension and running gear is tedious. Keep a close eye to ensure all rims are aligned and eight tyres are level to the ground The top and bottom fuselage halves fits perfectly but you still need to fill and sand the joints to make it look seamless. I added a small piece of 0.2mm sheet styrene to fill a gap in the rear joints

I began by giving the model a nice layer of Grey Primer for the upper and Black Primer for lower sections. I then consecutively gave the vehicle coats of XF-67 NATO Green, XF-68 NATO Brown, and XF-69 NATO Black. Detail painting was done with a brush. The wooden handles of the pioneer tools were XF-60 Dark Yellow followed by a XF-64 Red Brown wash. The spade, pickaxe, and tow cables were XF-84 Dark Iron, and the 20mm barrel was Humbrol 27004 Gun Metal Metalcote, Headlamps were Alclad 101, and taillights A.MIG.093 Crystal Red and A.MIG.097 Crystal Orange, respectively. A coat of X-22 Clear Gloss was sufficient to gloss up the surface and help the decals adhere better. I chose the more colorful outfit of a Luchs that took
30-37-TAKOM-07-Page-SMMI-0817.indd 35
part in a multinational KFOR force in Kosovo in 2000. The decals went down without any incidents, and were thin, had very little carrier film, and worked well with Mr Mark Setter. All were recoated with another layer of X-22 to protect the decals from the weathering process. Plenty of reference images show this vehicle attracts a lot of dust, dirt, splatter, scratches, streaks, mud - the lot – particularly on the sides and lower part of the hull and large wheels. The best way to get an authentic weathering look is to check out a photograph of the vehicle in its environment. I gave the Luchs a good wash and filter using A.MIG.1621 PLW, A.MIG.1622 PLW and A.MIG.1007 for US Modern Vehicles. I
found Ammo of MIGs Panel Line Washes very versatile. Besides to wash panel lines, I used it as filters, and also to replicate dust. I made dried dust streaks using cotton buds and a small brush, and made blotches of paint discoloration using a sponge. I gave the vehicle a mud effects by misting hairspray over the body, followed by thin layers of acrylic XF-57 buff and XF-52 Flat Earth. The lower part of the vehicle was smothered with the same colors. After adding water, I then scrubbed the layer with an old brush to give it a convincing chipping effect. Be sure to clean your airbrush thoroughly from any hairspray residue, as it will clog the airbrush when it hardens.

Scale 1:35 / Spähpanzer 2
Next was creating splatter effects of all sizes and shapes. The way I did this was to load up an old brush with earth coloured paints and push compressed air through it. I adjusted the airbrush distance and angle, paint thickness, and brush size to get a variety of splatter. I then added some irregular mud stains using sponges loaded with darker and lighter earthly tones. The wheels got the same weathering treatment as the rest of the vehicle. Looking at my references, the tyres all had sharp muddy stains. To replicate this, I dipped them in a small pool of paint by mixing XF-57 and XF-52, followed by randomly dabbing a sponge loaded with a lighter mud colour. I sprayed a thin layer of lightened XF-57 and added scratch marks with a toothpick and an old toothbrush. The KFOR version includes decals for two pairs of reflective vinyl that crews secured on

the front fenders and under the rear blinkers. I made the vinyl out of the carton backing for the etched fret. They were trimmed to fit the decals and once dried, were placed with a dab of white glue. The final stages include adding the antenna mounts, rear-view mirrors, and the pole for the rotating lights. The undersides were given a heavy coat of A.MIG.1408 Fresh Engine Oil, A.MIG.1407 Engine Grime and A.MIG.1409 Fuel Stains. I used an old brush and sponge to give it a random look. The whole vehicle was flattened with several coats of Mr Color No.182 Flat Clear and No.30 Flat Base. Pigments
came last and were applied on specific areas of the model. Dust and dirt were achieved by brushing A.MIG.3004 Europe Earth and A.MIG.3013 Rubble – and fixed with A.MIG.3000 Pigment Fixer. I splattered some A.MIG.1408 and A.MIG.1407 on the top deck. I then carefully brushed A.MIG.3009 Gun Metal on the MG-3 and 20mm barrel to improve the shine. I have to say this Takom kit was both challenging and fun to build!

he inspiration for this column’s monthly themes comes from a wide range of sources, some of them
obvious and others less so. Sometimes those ideas are easy to find but often I am scratching around for something on which to base my monthly ramblings. This month has been one of the easier ones and returns to a subject I talk about from time to time – the nature of model shows. I’ve just returned from one the shows I attend each year. It’s the MAFVA Nationals and I’ve been going for almost as long as I’ve been a member. I joined MAFVA roughly the same time as I joined IPMS (UK) and I happily split my loyalties between the two. Neither am I the only current or former member of the IPMS Committee to have memberships of both organisations. As a long term MAFVA member I would be attending the Nationals anyway, but I have the added bonus of representing IPMS most years. We have long had a reciprocal agreement that ensures that each organisation has the opportunity to represent themselves at the other’s annual championships. There is the obvious cross-over in membership but it is also about supporting the broader hobby and working with each other rather than as rivals. After all, we all need a healthy hobby in order for us to survive. Attending a show as an IPMS representative means that I don’t have quite the freedom to wander around as I normally would. My ability to do so very much depends on the size of the event and how busy it is. My primary reasons for being there are to promote IPMS to new people; to offer existing members a chance to renew; to act as a point of contact for our members, a real face if you will; and finally, to maintain the profile of the Society within the hobby. I’ve been involved with the Executive Committee for long enough that it is rare that I don’t know several people at any given model show. Some are friends, some are traders who I’ve got to know over time, some are current or former committee members and some are members of some the clubs that I belong to. Being ‘on duty’ at a show is a responsibility but it’s also a task I enjoy. That said, I always try take a browse around the show to see the club stands and part with some cash on the trade stands. I also try to work on a model. It may not be a current project but it encourages conversation with both the interested observer and the
casual passer-by. For the same reason, I always put several of my completed models on the membership desk. It helps to identify me as a modeller and to show people what I build. It breaks the ice if they can ask you about one of the models, or perhaps what it is that you are building. For my trip to the MAFVA Nationals this year I set myself two personal tasks. By some miracle, I was able to achieve both. Firstly, I wanted to pick up another 1/48 scale Tamiya Humvee, specifically the cargo version with the soft-top roof and front doors. The second goal was to scratch build a pair of rear canvas doors for the Humvee as none are available in the aftermarket world. I have a future project that will require the full set of four canvas doors and needed a pair of rear doors that sat comfortably alongside the kit-supplied front doors without being obviously different. By the time I had packed up at the end of the day I had two doors that, if not complete, were far enough advanced to give me confidence that I could complete the larger project. Whenever I have a new project that requires a complex or unusual item I will often attempt it first. If I can’t get it right then I know it’s not worth starting the rest of the project. I didn’t get it right the first time, or the second, but I learnt enough from the attempts to get the third pair of doors to a standard that I can use. A model show may seem a strange place to work on a new component but it was a small project that only required some bits of plastic strip and card, plus some basic modelling tools. I can work on it between doing my official tasks and it often generates conversation. In this day and age, watching a modeller building a part of plastic sheet and rod is unusual – there is an all-too-common assumption that ‘details’ and ‘conversions’ come in a box from an aftermarket manufacturer. It’s the type of task that helps to demystify the craft of scratch building and maybe, just maybe it will encourage someone else to have a go themselves rather than buying a ready-made solution. Most of all it’s about interacting with other modellers and that’s the most enjoyable part for me. You might be sharing your own knowledge but the opportunity to learn from others is incalculable.

Sturmtiger 38cm Assault Mortar Tamiya
Manufacturer: Tamiya Scale: 1:48 Kit Type: Plastic injection moulded Kit Number: 32591 Price: TBC
Robin Gilby
Following on from their recent Elefant tank destroyer, comes another 1:48 German heavyweight from Tamiya, the very rare Sturmtiger. The vehicle itself used a Tiger 1 lower hull and running gear with a large armoured superstructure fitted to house the fearsome 38cm RW-61 rocket powered mortar, and was intended to smash enemy strongpoints and fortified buildings. Just eighteen vehicles were completed in late 1944, some seeing action in Poland and then in defence of the German homeland as part of specialist Armoured Assault Mortar Companies. The kit is supplied on just four sprues, with a separate lower hull, a bag of small polycaps and some optional hull weights. Decent link and length tracks are included as is a nice crew figure. The build is shown in just eighteen stages, and there is also a Sturmtiger history sheet which also shows the one suggested colour scheme for a vehicle in Germany 1945. No decals are
supplied with the kit. As with the Elefant model there is a separate self-adhesive Zimmerit upgrade set available from Tamiya (Item No. 35187) or of course you can apply your own if you wish. Some of my reference images show these vehicles with and without Zimmerit applied so there is a choice there too. This is another nice quarter scale release from Tamiya, with great detail and options. I for one am glad the range keeps growing with interesting subjects such as this. Look out for the full build review in a future issue of SMMI. Thanks to The Hobby Company for the review sample

The subject of this review is pretty much as seen - a character from a recent film release, and the likeness to a certain Hollywood actor is superb as the tank commander in a Sherman during World War II. The subject is released before in bust form from a couple of companies, and this 120mm full figure will be popular amongst the figure painters. The figure is shown in one of the poses which features in many publicity pictures so plenty of reference material to hand. Sang Eon Lee of Life Miniatures is renowned for his sculpting and casting quality, and this first release of a full 120mm figure is as good as his busts. The detailing on the folds and creases is excellent and the undercuts on the jacket and trousers follow the same high quality. The removal of casting plugs is very easy, the accurate locating points make for an easy assembly, and I had my figure prepped ready for priming in an hour. Sang has paid particular attention to the uniform and is as accurate as I studied the film stills and each item well defined on the figure. The jacket details shows the correct badges and seams and the trousers show the high cavalry style boots. The shoulder holster straps and belts

The Latest Armour Books Reviewed
books
in focus Osprey The Philippine Sea – The Last Great Carrier Battle Publisher: Osprey Author: Mark Stille ISBN: 9781472819208 Format: Softback, 96 pages Price: £14.99 Involving the US Fifth Fleet and the Japanese Mobile Fleet, the battle of the Philippine Sea took place during the United States’ amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands during the Pacific War. The two sides clashed on 19-20 June 1944 and the Japanese carrier fighters were shot down in devastating numbers by US aircraft in what became known as the “Great Marianas Turkey Shoot”, before US counterattacks and submarine strikes forced the withdrawal of the Japanese fleet. Fully illustrated with stunning specially commissioned artwork, the author tells the enthralling story of the last, and largest, carrier battle of the Pacific War, the one that saw the end of the Imperial Japanese Navy as a formed fighting force.
Panther
Publisher: Osprey Author: Thomas Anderson ISBN: 9781472827036 Format: Hardback Price: £20.00 This new study by German armour expert Thomas Anderson draws upon original German archival material to tell the story of the birth of the Panther in response to the Soviet tanks encountered in 1941. He then analyses its success on the battlefield and the many modifications and variants that also came into play. Illustrated throughout with rare photographs and drawings, many of which have never been published in English before, this is a unique history of one of the most famous tanks of World War II.
Operation Torch
Publisher: Osprey Author: Brian Lane Herder ISBN: 9781472820549 Format: Softback, 96 pages Price: £14.99 Operation Torch was the largest and most complex amphibious invasion of its time. In November 1942, three landings took place simultaneously across the French North African coast in an ambitious attempt to trap and annihilate the Axis’ North African armies between the invading forces under General Eisenhower and British Field-Marshall Montgomery’s Eighth Army in Egypt. Using full colour artwork, maps and contemporary photographs, this is the thrilling story of this complex operation.
Tiger
Publisher: Osprey Author: Thomas Anderson ISBN: 9781472822048 Format: Softback Price: £18.00 One of the most feared weapons of World War II, the Tiger tank was a beast of a machine which dominated the battlefields of Europe with its astonishing size, speed and firepower, which continues to fascinate more than 70 years after it was first designed. Revealing its design and development history, the author draws upon original German archival material to tell the story of the birth of the Tiger.

on the side Osprey D-Day Beach Assault Troops Publisher: Osprey Author: Gordon L Rottman ISBN: 9781472819468 Format: Softback, 64 pages Price: £11.99
This is an in-depth study of the uniforms, equipment, weapons, passage, landings, and tactics of US, British and Canadian assault units during the period from before H-Hour on June 6 to dawn on June 7.
Maginot Line Gun Turrets Publisher: Osprey Author: Clayton Donnell ISBN: 9781472820273 Format: Softback, 48 pages Price: £10.99 This fully illustrated study examines the technical details of the French artillery turrets. It shows the evolution of the design of the guns and turrets used in the French forts before and during World War I, then those built exclusively for the Maginot Line to give a comprehensive overview of the weapons designed to protect France from invasion.
Pershing vs Tiger Publisher: Osprey Author: Steven J Zaloga ISBN: 9781472820267 Format: Softback, 80 pages Price: £12.99 This new book examines the dramatic Tiger/Pershing duel at Elsdorf in Germany, and assesses the clashes between German armour and the sole ‘Super Pershing’ deployed to Europe. Featuring full-colour artwork, carefully chosen photographs and specially commissioned maps, this is the story of the first US heavy tanks in combat with the fearsome Tiger I during the last months of World War II in Europe.
US Grenade Launchers Publisher: Osprey Author: Gordon L Rottman ISBN: 9781472819529 Format: Softback, 80 pages Price: £12.99 Reliable, easy to use, and lethally effective, the M79 soon became an iconic symbol of the Vietnam War and had a profound influence on small-unit tactics. As the Vietnam conflict continued, it was joined on the front line by experimental models such as the magazine-fed T148E1, as well as two launchers intended to be fitted under the barrel of the new M16 assault rifle: Colt’s XM148 and AAI Corporation’s M203. The M203 remains in US Army service today, while the US Marine Corps now also fields the M32 multiple grenade launcher - like the M79, a standalone weapon. Featuring full-colour artwork, this is the story of the rugged and formidable grenade launchers that equipped the United States and its allies in Vietnam and beyond from the 1960s to the present day. Pen and Sword HMS Gloucester – The Untold Story Publisher: Pen and Sword Author: Ken Otter ISBN: 9781526702111 Format: Softback, 206 pages Price: £11.99
On 22 May 1941, the cruiser HMS Gloucester (‘The Fighting G’) was sunk by aircraft of the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Crete. Of her crew of 810 men, only 83 survived to come home at the end of the War in 1945. It is unknown how many of the men went down with the ship and how many died in the sea. Clinging to rafts and flotsam, the survivors hung on for almost 24 hours before finally being rescued by German boats searching for their own men who had been victims of a previous British naval attack. This book explores the ship’s history and operational successes from her launching in 1937 to her tragic demise. It includes vivid first-hand accounts from the surviving crew and the author’s painstaking research has revealed the awful truth about one of the Royal Navy’s greatest disasters during the Second World War.

The Battle for Afghanistan Publisher: Pen and Sword Author: Mark Adkin ISBN: 9781473852160 Format: Softback, 168 pages Price: £12.99
This is the story of the defeat of Soviet Russia’s forces in Afghanistan by a guerrilla force known as the Mujahideen, heavily backed by Pakistan and the USA. The Mujahideen paved the way for the Taliban regime, to exist having all but defeated the Russian Army in the late 1980’s.
Pen and Sword Tanks of the Second World War Publisher: Pen and Sword Author: Thomas Anderson ISBN: 1473859328 Format: Hardback Price: £12.99
Publisher: Pen and Sword Author: George Bernard ISBN: 9781473857605 Format: Hardback Price: £20.00
This is the first detailed account of the rear-guard action that took place between 25 and 29 May 1940 at Cassel and Hazebrouck on the western perimeter of the Dunkirk Corridor. The book looks closely at the deployment of units in both towns and focuses on the individuals involved in the defence and the subsequent break-out, which ended in capture or death for so many. There are two car tours that explore the surrounding area of Cassel and the deployment of platoons within Hazebrouck. These are supplemented by two walking tours, one in Cassel itself and the second further to the west of the town around the area controlled by B and D Companies of the 2nd Gloucesters. The book is illustrated with ten maps and over 100 modern and contemporary photographs.
Paul Middleton
The latest book from Pen and Sword examines the history of armoured warfare, concentrating on World War II. The first chapters examine the genesis of armour and then the Inter War period. Although the book’s title refers to Tanks of the Second World War the author argues that only by looking at the development of the tank from 1916 through the formative years between the two World Wars can the reader fully understand the tanks and how they were used in World War II. The main body of the book concentrates on World War II but is curiously entitled ‘Tanks in Action,
the 1930s’. There are side bars that give the main characteristics of the major tanks used in World War II. However, the great strength of this book lies in the pictures. Every page has at least one large black and white photograph, from a variety of sources, with most of them being seen for the first time. The final chapter looks at the immediate post World War II period showing how the Americans developed the M26 into the M47 and M48 and the British moved from the Comet to the universal tank that was the Centurion. The Soviet development of the T34 into the T44 and thence to the T54 is clearly shown. This book will appeal to both those who have little knowledge of the subject and those that have studied World War II AFVs in depth. Highly recommended to all and thanks to Pen and Sword for the review sample.

BUCCANEER S.1. S.2 and Mk.50
MDF Scaled Down #6 By Andy Evans
Built by Blackburn at Brough, the Buccaneer epitomises the very essence of the fast, low-level ground attack concept, coupled with an inherently stable ride. The Buccaneer was designed in the late 1950’s as a low-level, long range, high speed, strike/attack/recce aircraft for carrier operations. It was produced in two main variants, the S.1 and the much improved and more powerful S.2, serving with both the Royal Navy and later the RAF from 1965 to 1994. Having enjoyed a successful, albeit relatively uneventful, career with the Royal Navy, the Buccaneer realised its true potential with the RAF and South African Air Force where it soon proved itself to be an immensely strong, manoeuvrable and reliable aircraft with a better speed, range and weapons carrying capability than many others. This was borne out during the many NATO exercises but came to public attention during Operation ‘Granby’ in the Gulf War. Here twelve Buccaneers were dispatched at three days notice, initially to laser designate targets for Tornado bombers, and later in the campaign, they acted as both Tornado designators and bombers in their own right whilst carrying out missions dropping their own 1000lb LGB’s. In total the type flew 216 Gulf sorties, destroying numerous bridges, aircraft shelters, Cover: Illustration Purposes Only
runways, command bunkers, ammunition stores and even other aircraft. The Buccaneer was prematurely withdrawn from service in 1994 as a result of arms reduction talks and the subsequent rationalisation of RAF assets, being replaced in the maritime strike role by more modern Tornado IDS aircraft. This new MDF Scaled Down from SAM Publications takes you into the heart of the Buccaneer, as we go faster, lower, longer!

ny large-scale RAF figures are few and far between, and Hawk Miniatures have redressed this by releasing
a 90mm Resin Battle of Britain pilot in a ‘Scramble’ pose. The pilot is as a three-part resin assembly, and the material is easy to work with. A nice addition is the running dog which fits well alongside the pilot, and this adds to the animation of the scene, although the dog is not shown on the box art I had begun painting the face with flesh colours with usual mix of Vallejo Cork Brown and Sand, but after a meeting with a figure painter at the local club meet, I decided to try the method of ‘under-painting’ on certain areas. This involved painting Dark Greens and Dark Blues in thin layers under the eyes, the nose, along the sides of the nose and in the area under the cheekbones. I then added further filter layers over these darker areas with thin mixes of flesh colour until I was happy with the transition between the layers. Highlighting was completed with further layers of Light Flesh to blend everything together. A similar approach is used on the hands and additional light shades added to the fingertips. The hair was base painted with Dark Brown and a highlight of Orange

Brown to depict him as ‘ginger’, which seems to be the typical nickname of the time. The side cap was a lighter colour used for the RAF uniform as described later. The silk scarf typically was White, so I followed the same route and painted it with an Off-White base colour, and shadows were formed by adding a hint of Mid-Grey and highlighted with Flat White. I decided to paint the uniform using Vallejo Model Colours as they had a good ‘Prussian Uniform Blue’ available, which fitted well with the RAF uniform colour. So, starting with a base of RAF Blue Uniform Blue, I made up a mix of 1:1 diluted with 50% distilled water, and two layers were applied, with each layer being dried with a warm air dryer. I then outlined each seam and pocket to highlight the different pieces of material used to make up the uniform coat. The outlining paint mix was the RAF Blue Uniform Blue, mixed with a dab of Matt Black and thinned with 70% Vallejo Acrylic Paint Retarder to give me some more

working time on the seams. To make the folds and creases stand out, I added Vallejo Blue Grey to the ‘Prussian Blue’, this was used to highlight the top edges of the creases. A and a drop of Black (very slight amount) was then used to change the ‘Prussian Blue’ to a darker mix and this was used to show the depth of the shadows. Once these colours were dry, after about an hour, a ‘wash’ of the main colour used over the entire uniform to blend it together. The cuffs have braided edging, and this was painted with an OffWhite shade, and then Flat White was used to enhance the details. The life jacket vest was painted Vallejo Wood which is an Off Yellow and fits in with the shades used during 1940, with and highlights from Vallejo Primrose Yellow, applied thinly as it is easy to lose the base colour. The shadow areas of the life jacket were placed by adding minute drops of Mid-Green to tint the base Yellow. I painted the strap detail with the same colours, but the metal fastener used a Black Base with metallic Silver and a wash of Matt Black to give more depth. The RAF sheepskin lined boots used a Black base, followed by a Black Brown top colour, and then small amounts of Tan Brown were stippled over the top to add wear and tear to the leather, followed by a coat of satin varnish. The sheepskin lining was Pale White, with a hint of Brown Wash, and then Off White was dry brushed on to give the appearance of the wool effect. The Springer Spaniel was

tank destroyers. However, as a light gun tank in the opening stages of the Second World War it provided a very welcome and timely addition to Adolf Hitler’s Panzerwaffe. Just before Hitler dismembered Czechoslovakia the Czech companies of Skoda and Ceskomoravska Kolben Dansk (CKD) were working on the LT-35 and TNHP light tanks respectively. CKD based in Prague had started design of a new light tank in the early 1930s for export. This was designated the LT (Light Tank) L. The initial modelled was dubbed the LTL-H but when the Czech Defence Ministry tested it it became the TNHB. However, for export purposes it was

also confusingly known as the LT-34. During 1935 and 1938 Skoda with help from CKD built 424 LT-35 light tanks with just over half being confiscated following the German take over. In the late 1930s the Czechs set up a tank evaluation committee to examine both CKD and Skoda designs. By this stage the LTL-H had evolved into the LTL-P (TNHS). During extensive trials this proved to be particularly robust which involved a 3000mile test, a third of which was cross-country. As a result it was recommended that this tank be adopted as the new standard tank of the Czech Army. An order for 150 was placed under the designation TNHP. Foreign customers were also suitably impressed with orders placed by Afghanistan, Latvia, Peru, Sweden, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. This amounted to almost 200 tanks for export. The UK’s War
Mechanisation Board also obtained a vehicle for testing. Their findings were that the tank’s fighting compartment was very cramped and that the layout was not crew friendly. The TNHP was an 8-ton tank armed with a 37.2mm Skoda A7 tank gun and a coaxial 7.92mm Besa machine gun. A second machine gun was also fitted in a spherical mounting at the front of the hull; the driver using a Bowden cable attached to one of the steering levers could operate this. The top of the turret had a cupola with four periscopes. The tank was riveted together apart from the top of the superstructure which was bolted

on. Armoured protection amounted to 25mm at the front, 19mm on the sides and 15mm at the rear. The running gear consisted of four rubber-tyred single wheels, thirty-one inches in diameter, either side. Each was mounted on a cranked stub-axle and each pair of wheels were controlled by a semi-elliptic spring that was freely pivoted. There were also two return rollers either side mounted above the third and second and the second and first wheels. The tracks comprised cast steel shoes measuring 4.09 inches pitch and 11.55 inches wide. Pins each secured with a curclip held them together. To improve traction in snow and ice the tracks could be fitted with detachable spuds. Drive was achieved via front twin sprockets; these had nineteen teeth, which engaged the tracks. An internally toothed gear powered the sprockets by a pinion attached to a cross-shaft. The latter had two steering units consisting of clutch and epicyclic elements that gave two steering ratios, which were driven by a bevel gear from the epicyclic Praga-Wilson pre-selector fivespeed gearbox. This was located between the

driver to the right and the machine gunner to the left. A propeller shaft passed through the middle of the hull to a six-cylinder, watercooled Praga TNHP OHV lorry petrol engine that could generate 125hp at 2,200 rpm. The engine was mounted centre-line of the vehicle in a rear compartment. It had a dry sump and was cooled by finned cylinder with an AutoKlean filter. Ignition was by a Bosch magneto with screened spark plugs. The all-important engine cooling was affected by a centrifugal fan powered through a Rzeppa universal joint from the crankshaft. Air was drawn in through a mushroom louvre over the engine compartment as well as the bulkhead and through a radiator of the continuous fin and tube type. The hot air was then ejected through an opening in the rear top plate (this was protected by armour steel slats). The fuel tanks were located either side of the engine. These were fitted to floor plates designed to blow outwards if they were hit. On 15 March 1939 Hitler occupied Czechoslovakia and the Wehrmacht confiscated all the Czech Army’s LT-35. By this stage no production models of the TNHP had yet been completed. The Germans liked the TNHP design, which they designated the Pz.Kpfw.38(t) the latter letter was an abbreviation of ‘tscheche’, the German for Czech, and ordered that the 150 unfinished tanks be completed. The Skoda LT-35 renamed the Pz.Kpfw.35(t), was also co-opted into the German Army, but unlike the TNHP was not kept in production due to reliability problems and easily clogged road wheels. The German Panzer crews used the generic term ‘Skodas’ when referring to both tank types. The following year CKD was re-designated Böhmisch Mährische Maschinenfabrik AG (BMM) and Skoda was also brought on board to help build the 38(t). Between 1940 and 1942 when Czech tank production was suspended a total of 1,168 were built for the Wehrmacht. Some 228 Pz.Kpfw.38(t)s were issued to the 7th and 8th Panzer Divisions in 1940 The tanks saw service with the Germans during the Polish, French, Yugoslavian, Greek and Russian campaigns. Notably during 1940-41 the 38(t) formed a quarter of all Hitler’s panzer forces. The Germans were swift to improve the tank’s armour. They ordered the frontal armour be increased to 50mm and the sides to 30mm. The turret’s 25mm armour was boosted with an additional 25mm plate. Also in some of the tanks the Czech manufactured gun was replaced by the German 37mm KwK L/45. These improvements meant that the tank increased in weight to 11 tons. The up-armoured model was dubbed the TNHP-S (the S denoting Schwer or Heavy). In total the Germans had eight models produced running from Ausf A to G and S. The Germans impounded 90 TNHP-SV that had been built for Sweden and designated them the Model S. These were then exported to serve with the Slovak Fast Division. Once it was clear the captured Czech Pz.Kpfw.38(t) light tank was obsolete as a battle tank and too slow for a reconnaissance role it was decided to utilise the robust and

highly reliable chassis as a gun carriage. A number had their turrets removed and a Russian 7.62mm gun installed into an open fighting compartment. The successful 38(t) chassis was used as the basis for self-propelled guns, which included the Bison, armed with a 150mm howitzer and the Marder armed with the Russian 7.62mm and the German 75mm anti-tank guns. A FlaKpanzer version was also produced armed with a 20mm anti-aircraft gun. The most successful use for the 38(t) was the Jagdpanzer Hetzer. After a prototype Marder III had been produced in late December 1941 it was decreed that from the end of March 1942 some 17 Panzerjäger 38(t) (Sd.Kfz.139) were to be built rising to 30 a month by mid-year. Between April and October 1942 some 344 of these Panzerjäger self-propelled guns were built, with another nineteen converted from existing Panzer 38(t) in 1943 by BMM. The bulk of them were issued to units on the Eastern Front. Rommel also received 66 in North Africa that were issued to two Panzerjäger battalions. While this Panzerjäger provided a very welcome stopgap it was far from perfect. The gun was placed on top of the hull superstructure and forward of the rear-mounted engine, which gave the vehicle a very high profile. In fact at 2.5 metres it was fractionally higher than the original tank, which left, the gunners very exposed. In June 1942 another prototype Marder III was produced armed with the German 75mm PaK40/3 anti-tank gun, this included an improved superstructure for the fighting compartment which was larger, squatter,

lighter and gave the crew better protection. Nonetheless the height was the same at 2.5 metres. Essentially the 7.5cm PaK40/3 auf Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) Ausf H (Sd.Kfz.138) looked the same as its predecessor but the side armour of the superstructure sloped back toward the engine. It went into production in November 1942 and by April 1943 BMM had been built 242, while a further 175 were converted from existing Panzer 38(t). This type of Panzerjäger was issued to the Army, Waffen-SS and Luftwaffe ground units serving on the Eastern Front, in Tunisia and in Italy. The initial model of the Marder armed with the Russian gun was built using the Ausf or Model G Panzer 38(t) chassis. Subsequently it and the PaK40 variant were built using the Ausf H. A third version was built using the Ausf M. It was recognised that the first two versions of the Marder III were

not ideal and that a new design was needed. In July 1942 Hitler ordered the Panzer 38(t) be switched entirely over to self-propelled gun production. On the final version of the Panzerjäger 38(t) it was decided to place the engine in the middle of the hull, this allowed the fighting compartment and the gun to be located to the rear. Although not as thickly armoured as its predecessors the redesigned superstructure had much better deflection angles, which greatly enhanced protection. Also the thinner armour meant
it was fractionally lighter than the two initial versions. Whereas the first two variants retained the 38(t) light tank drive sprocket, idler, four wheels and two return rollers either side, the Marder III Ausf M only had a single central return roller. A total of 975 Panzerjäger 38(t) mit 7.5cm Pak40/3 Ausf M (Sd.Kfz.138) were constructed by BMM between April 1943 and May 1944. Its’ manufacture then gave way to the Hetzer which was built right up until the end of the war.

During the production run, many improvements were implemented. These included gun stabilization from 1971, and from 1972, replacing the original coaxial heavy machine gun with a dual-purpose 20mm autocannon for use against light armour and helicopters, with the ability to depress to minus-eight degrees and elevate to forty-degrees. All French army vehicles were eventually brought to this newer standard, however, the designation remained AMX 30B. In the nineties, a reactive armour

protection to the turret and upper hull. This build is of the 1:35 Tiger Model AMX30B2 BRENNUS kit. The build was very straightforward, and I can say that there were few if any issues to deal with. The parts were crisp and the moulding flash free and the fit was near perfect. I sprayed the model with a base shade of Mr Color Black and then added Mr Color TC10, TC11 and TC12. Weathering was also carried out using Mr Color products. All in all this was a very pleasing build, and the ERA blocks add a more aggressive look to the tank.

ake a look at this month’s Shesto product of the month, which is a range of tweezers and pick up tools.
Every modeller needs at least one pair of tweezers in their tool box, and it is useful to have several different pairs for different jobs. Reverse action and locking tweezers are really useful if you are rigging models as I often find I could do with an extra pair of fingers to hold a loose end! The pair of tweezers with a built-in magnifier and light are also handy for rigging too. The picture on the packet for these ones show threading a needle, quite often the rigging process feels like this! The plastic tweezers, whilst not good for fine work, are great for holding parts when painting. For fine work, you need the straight or curved end pointed tweezers. To help with picking up those tiny photo-etched parts the three different sizes of tacky ended pick and place tools do just the
job. For larger parts, there is the pick-up tool with steel grips. If you are just starting out in model making, a selection of these tools will be a useful addition to your tool box. If you have been modelling for a while, take a look at Shesto’s website to see what useful tools are out there! zzwww.shesto.com or contact us by telephoning zz020 8451 6188 or Email at

are so many vehicles on the battlefield that have parts from different types, such as a late hull with an early turret, so make sure you check those references! I wanted this build to be straight-from-the-box, so I didn’t add any accessories., but had to do some work on the gun barrel and wheels! The kit contains link-by-link tracks that snap together in the same style as their BVP-1 kit, but much better. I also decided to make my build heavily weathered and scratched, with numerous layers of colour, and here I applied Sirahobby SE01 Chipping Effect on each layer. So to begin I added a primer coat of Russian Green, and once dry I added a layer of hairspray and then a layer of SE01. This was follwed by a Light Green layer that was chipped with warmish water and a stiff brush. After this I sprayed more SE01 and added the Red-Brown camouflage with Black-Green lines. I then repeated the chipping proces, after which I added some White stripes and the markings, and added more chipping using the same technique. With that complete the model was ready for some weathering. I started with the Sirahobby Dark Wash AW01, and then began to add shadows and highlights using various oil colours. I let the oil shades dry, and then I started painting in more chips. I wanted to give to the chips a rusty, natural look so I applied thinned Brown Madder WWW.SAMPUBLICATIONS.COM

oil colour in their centres. Then I continued with the blending using a clean brush damp with White Spirit. I also painted in some random rust streaks for more effect. I then started adding some dust and mud using thinned Tamiya XF-72 Brown. Next I applied a thick layer of Sirahobby PP208 Sandy Brown Pigment Paste with a touch Sirahobby E11 Clay Earth added, and just before this dried, I wiped away any excess vertically with a damp cotton swab. Next I wanted to add some dark wet stains, so I randomly applied AK Interactive Fresh Mud Effect AK016, and I also added some light-dust stains using Sirahobby SE21. In order to add a little more interest, I also added some Modelscene Seaball Grass and the Oak Leaves onto the fenders. The final step to rub all the edges with a graphite pencil. To enhance the model even further I added some scratchbuilt ammunition boxes, and a towing cable from a T-72. The unditiching log came from my garden and the spade is from the Karton Models Agricultural Implements Set. I have to admit that I really enjoyed this build, and can recommend this Trumpeter kit to all!

he FV 430 series of vehicles was designed to fill every niche in the British army that required a fully tracked
armoured platform, excluding tanks. The advantages of a single-base vehicle for easing logistical and maintenance requirements are obvious. It could be argued that the FV 430 series was the most successful armoured vehicle in the history of the British army and many are still in service today. This article will concentrate on the FV 432 APC but for completeness the full series is listed below. FV 432 APC - modifications include the Peak Turret 1 man GPMG turret and FV432/30 IFV with 30mm Rarden turret from the Fox armoured car. The base vehicle is designed to be adapted to multiple roles. History and Development The late 1950’s and early 1960’s were a ‘golden age’ for the British Army, with new, well designed and innovative equipment coming into service, the FV 432 was one of these vehicles and has become part of the fabric of the British Army, if you see a British soldier anywhere in the world one of the many variants of the 432 will be following close behind. The 432 did not spring into existence fully formed but as is the case with most military equipment a great deal of money, time and effort was expended on multiple failed projects before the final product made it into service. The great majority of these projects are of no relevance to the FV 432, however, the FV 420 should be mentioned as it had a direct influence on the 432. Series production was about to begin when the FV 420 was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to concerns over its poor layout and unreliable gearbox. This meant that many of the parts were already stockpiled for production and the War Office insisted these be used in any new design to recover some of the costs involved. The contract to design and develop a the new APC for the Army to be known as the FV432 ‘Trojan’, was awarded to GKN Sankey
Ltd in 1959 and in April 1960 a further contract for four prototypes and ten troop trials vehicles was signed. The ‘Trojan’ name was quietly dropped soon after and there are two stories as to why. One is that a car manufacturer of the same name claimed copyright infringement, and the other much better story is that it was pointed out to the War Office that ‘Trojan’ was the name of the bestselling brand of condom in America and that squaddie humour would have had a field day with such a name, for once there is actual documentation to back up the condom story

in the MOD’s files and it also makes for a much better tale. Whilst GKN Sankey had been awarded the contract to design and manufacture the new APC they had to closely follow the requirements laid out by the war office in its specification No.26, and also accept that some of the development work would be given to the state owned Royal Ordinance factory, the design brief included using as many components from the cancelled FV 420 as possible. GKN got round these restrictions by developing what were in effect two separate vehicles on a common hull. The Mk.1 FV432 would use the Rolls Royce B81 petrol engine and automatic gearbox along with the celetrac steering system that had been specified for the FV 420, and when the stocks of these were used up the Mk.2 with a new multifuel (diesel) engine and steering system would be
brought into production. GKN showed great foresight by only paying lip service to the multifuel requirement, which blighted the Chieftain. The 432 was designed from the outset to carry out multiple roles without major modification so the vehicle can be quickly converted into Armoured ambulance, 81mm mortar carrier, and command vehicle to name but a few. GKN were also given the contract to develop a fitters/recovery vehicle and light load carrier on the same chassis, the former became the superb FV 434 while the latter lost out to the Alvis Stalwart which
could fill the same role for much less cost, larger payload and almost the same level of cross country mobility. The FV 433 abbot was also developed later on the basic FV 432 chassis. Much has been made of the similarities between the British FV 432 and the American M113 with claim and counter claim about which vehicle influenced which, in reality it was a case of two separate designs finding similar solutions to a common problem at the same time, both of which were rendered obsolete when the Russian revealed the BMP 1, the first Infantry Fighting Vehicle in 1966, The British army responded to this revolutionary vehicle with its usual lightning fast reaction to new developments and introduced the FV 510 Warrior in 1988, over twenty years later. Development of the new APC went ahead without any major problems and the first examples began rolling of the production line in late 1962, the Mk.1 entered service in 1963 and the Mk.2 in 1965. The Production run continued until 1971 with just over 3000 built, somewhere between 1200 and 1500 remain in service today fifty-five years later. Such longevity implies that the 432 was a brilliantly designed vehicle that was future proofed at its inception, which sadly is not the case. The 432 is a generally well designed vehicle but has its faults, and it was expected it would be out of service by the end of the 1980’s. It seems however that the 432 has a charmed life, whenever its replacement is proposed something happens to save it and
The 432 has six batteries in three locations, two each for the automotive, radio and NBC systems

maintenance manual The FV 430 Family of Vehicles
the army has to continue to make do and mend with an increasingly obsolete vehicle. The FV 510 warrior was designed by GKN Sankey as a direct replacement for the 432 and was intended to be a complete family of vehicles just like the FV 432 before; the intention was it would completely replace the 432 on a one to one basis. With the end of the cold war the government cancelled contracts as fast as possible to save money and only 749 Warriors of all types were built. Not enough to completely replace the 432 even in front line Infantry units equipped with Warrior, and so the old warhorse soldiered on. Later it was supposed to be replaced by the Multi Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV) due in service by 2008 but this program was cancelled and replaced by the Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) due in service by 2015, which yes you guessed it, was also cancelled (although a revised version of it called Ajax is supposed to be coming into service) and so the venerable 432 is expected to continue to serve until 2030. It was apparent however that the worn out and increasingly unreliable and ineffective Mk 2/1 APC’s needed upgrading and so the final (so far) version of the 432 the Mk.3 Bulldog came into service in 2006. Basic overview The FV 432 looks like a box on tracks, and follows what has become the accepted standard layout for APC in the decades after its introduction, with the engine in the front next to the two-man crew, large space to the rear for carrying troops or equipment and exit/entrance via a large door at the rear. A basic FV 432 is 5.1m long 2.8m wide and 2.28m high. It has a crew of two (driver and Commander and in its APC role carries a section of 10 fully equipped infantry. The Mk.1 has a petrol engine the Mk.2 and Mk.3 use different diesel engines, all vehicles use torsion bar suspension, with five road

wheels per side, the idler wheel is of the same pattern as the road wheels which reduces spares costs and logistics, the drive sprockets are mounted at the front and the track is of the ‘flat’ type and each of the ninety links per side has a rubber pad to prevent damage to tarmac roads. The vehicle can reach speeds of 32-45mph/50- 70 kmh on roads depending on its Mark; this speed is due to a high power to weight ratio as the FV 432 has a relatively low weight of just over fifteen metric tons fully loaded. This low weight also facilitates a considerable range both on road and cross country (360miles/483km and 170 miles/278km respectively for the more common diesel Mk.2) and reduces logistic replenishment demands, the transmission is automatic with six forward and one reverse
gear, steering and braking on the Mk.1 and 2 is via close coupled tillers, the Mk.3 uses a different steering system gearbox and engine. The 432 is a very easy vehicle to drive and the engine and track noise is unique, not quite as good as the Chieftain but still instantly recognisable. The vehicle is built using rolled steel armour plate, which varies in thickness from 12.3mm on the sharply angled front glacis to 6mm on the roof. The armour is only adequate to protect the occupants from small arms fire or shell splinters, this was deemed acceptable as the 432 was never designed to engage in combat, its job was to keep up with the tanks and deploy the infantry when required and then retire to the rear, it role is often referred to quite correctly as a ‘Battle Taxi’. British army doctrine almost to the end of the cold war was that the Infantry would fight dismounted. The roof on the vehicle has a large circular hatch, nicknamed ‘the sunroof’ by the crews which can be opened in sections, this is officially called the mortar hatch and when the 432 is kitted out as an 81mm mortar carrier allows 360 degree traverse for the weapon. The standard APC is very lightly armed with only a single GPMG mounted on the commanders cupola, the vehicle commander is fully exposed when firing this weapon, two sets of three smoke discharges are also fitted to the front corners of the vehicle, to provide a semblance of cover if caught in the open. Side skirts were provided but hardly ever fitted as were rubber mud guards at the rear, these were heavy awkward and bulky and prone to being ripped off the vehicle when going cross country so again it was rare to see them fitted except during annual inspection. A rudimentary NBC system is installed and doubles as a source of fresh cool air for the crew and passengers from vents located around the interior. It operates on the standard British overpressure design which prevents external toxins entering the vehicle a

useful side effect of this is that rain cannot get in when the NBC system is running a great relief to the crew and passengers as otherwise the 432 leaks like a sieve. Early vehicles were painted in overall Bronze Green but from 1973 all 432’s were repainted in NATO Green and NATO Black over a red lead primer base. The split was two-thirds Green and onethird, Black and the actual pattern was left for individual units to decide which meant no two vehicles were ever the same. For those vehicles deployed to BATUS and used as OPFOR on Salisbury plain the mix was twothirds Mid-Stone and one-third Green and these vehicles were much more uniform as they were applied by the BATUS permanent staff en mass and not by the individual crews. 432’s deployed to the first and second Gulf war’s were painted overall sand. It is of course mandatory to mention that vehicles of the Berlin Brigade were painted in the famous urban camouflage scheme beloved of modellers but loathed by those who actually had to paint it for real. Vehicles deployed in Bosnia and other UN duties were painted the standard UN overall White with UN painted in large letters in Blue or Black on the sides and front. For the greater part of its service life the interior was painted in Matt Silver, which seemingly never dried and rubbed off on everything, from 2002 the interior was painted gloss white, padding was fixed to the walls and roof to reduce condensation and give some protection to the crew and occupants from being thrown onto hard and sharp metal edges the padding is a Dark Mustard colour, Humbrol 94 was a good match as is Vallejo Brown Ochre. The padding quickly became filthy with
ingrained dirt, oil and other substances. The passenger compartment has a row of three benches down each side, which are padded and covered in various shades of green or black leatherette as are the commanders and drivers seats. Space is provided in the panniers over the tracks for the crew and infantry sections kit as ever with British armoured vehicles there is not enough space for all the equipment required and field modifications such as empty ammunition boxes fixed under the seats became common, it was also almost a universal practice for crews to try and acquire by any means possible Chieftain commanders bins and long rear storage bins to store extra kit and these would be hung anywhere they would fit on the vehicle. Returning to the vehicle interior the most important piece of kit on the vehicle are the two Boiling vessels (BV’s) mounted on the rear door, the British squaddie will put up with almost anything but deny him his tea and the Army would stop dead. Standard radio fit was two Clansman radios although more could be fitted as required, all radio/intercom equipment was painted in Deep Bronze Green gloss. Intercom boxes are dotted around the interior apparently randomly some of which have a yellow face others are all green depending on manufacturer. The intercom allows communication between the crew and ‘the cargo’ as the Infantry section was often called. The 432 has six batteries in three locations, two each for the automotive, radio and NBC systems. Unlike its stalemate the Chieftain, the 432 does not have an auxiliary generator so the main engine would have to be run at all times if extra batteries were not provided.
The commander has a basic cupola with rudimentary sights, the driver has separate day and night sights, initially IR lights and sights were provided but these were soon dropped. Both the driver and commanders view is very restricted when closed down and the vehicle is driven opened up most of the time. Wing mirrors are provided to satisfy legal requirements but are of little if any use and all vehicles have an orange ‘blinky’ light and reflectors mounted on the rear; these are removed or covered over when going cross country. Whilst generally liked by those who use, it the FV 432 does have its faults as with any vehicle of its era it is maintaince heavy and any skimping in this area will result in breakdowns, which even with perfect maintenance are still a common occurrence. The FV 432 is also prone to shearing stub axles, shaking its wheel bolts loose and throwing its tracks if driven in a spirited fashion, it was not uncommon to see road wheels making a break for freedom and overtaking other vehicles on road marches, the offending vehicle crew would have to pay a fine in yellow handbags (Herfoder pils twelve-packs) to the REME mechanics when this happened. Engine changes were much quicker than on Chieftain although the ‘pack’ concept was employed on both vehicles, the engine decks could be unbolted and removed easily and a large hinged hatch on the front of the vehicle gave good access as well. The internal engine covers next to the driver and commander were often only loosely fitted to allow quick access to the engine start solenoids which had a nasty habit of sticking, and required a not so gentle tap with a lump hammer to release and start the engine. ad the Germans had survived until June 1945 and mass produced this latest model of King Tiger, the situation
for the Allies would have been quite complicated. The improvements to this new version of King Tiger would have turned it into a lethal machine, and very precise. The new telemetry system characterised by two bulbs on the sides of the turret, would have made it easier to aim with an accuracy never seen before, and would have been a nightmare for tanks like Pershing or JSII. What would have happened if this new model of King Tiger had gone into action? This is a hypothetical interpretation of what he would have looked like in combat. Possibly these King Tiger had left the factory painted in Red Primer, would have had spots in Sand added to its camouflage to cope with the dusty environment of the summer and the fighting in the cities. The gun would have been in its original

Here we have the first plastic kit from Ammo of MIG, manufactured by the Takom. For many years, I dreamed with this version of King Tiger, and now we have been able to realise this in detail. The kit includes a multitude of new parts to make two final versions
First we will apply a good primer. Black Primer is a good base to accentuate contrast for when we apply the modulation technique
We begin by applying the darkest colors from the King Tiger Modulation Set….

Dark Grey, and taken from the large stocks of 88mm weapons, and surely, the new crew would have used old uniforms in the face of a shortage of new equipment. But in addition, an infra-red sight would have been installed for the commander. Of course, there may have been much better a infra-red sight for the driver and another for the gunner, but the shortage of material would make such equipment scarce. In any case, it would have given a significant advantage to this King Tiger for night fighting.

…..and the result will provide a suitable contrast that will then be softened with effects and washes
Next add a lighter colour to the smaller details
Now lets apply some ‘Chipping Fluid’ and add the Sand camouflage colour
After a gloss coat, let’s add the decals, followed by a satin coat
Time now for a filter to unify the colours and to provide depth
When the filter is dry, let’s add a Dark Wash
The using the new Oilbrusher products we can apply highlights to some areas, and the final appearance will be brighter with more contrast
To represent demarcation line on the fenders, we will use adhesive tape to draw some longitudinal spots with the Oilbrusher…..

Next using a sponge we will add some chipping, especially around the edges of the hatches…..
….and then remove the tape and blend it with thinner
…..then, using A.MIG 044 Chipping Color we will paint more chips with a brush Now lets add some streaking
The process of adding dust is one of the most important. Many modellers are scared when they get to this point, because they think they ruin the entire process…...
So first we apply the three pigment colours, adding the darker ones around the ring of the turret and engine hatches. You must keep in mind that afterwards much of this dust will disappear……
…..and we continue to intensify the dust in some areas, but this time with an airbrush and with enamel based dust shades….
….. we can soak the surface with a little Odorless Thinner without mixing too much with the brush…...
…..then afterwards, we will use a brush slightly moistened with thinners to make irregular vertical marks on the surface, removing parts of the dust

The spattering process is next using the ‘Splashes’ products, which contains fine particles that correctly imitate the texture of the mud…..

Then add slightly diluted ‘Fresh Engine Oil’ and let it expand on the surface. The pigment will quickly absorb the product The process of making engine oil and dirt is also a problem for modellers. This is a simple and easy trick to create oil, grease and dirt effect very realistically. First apply the A.MIG 3007 Dark Earth pigment with a dry brush on the surface of the engine, but irregularly…..
….and by modifying the solution we can make different intensities. You can create small drops with a hard brush and the help of a toothpick
Add more products from the ‘Splashes’ range for other effects….

MAFVA
Our New Website
MAFVA exists to promote and interest in AFV’s and their associated equipment, and to act as a non-profit making organisation for the collection and dissemination of information. We try to answer queries and seek sources of information for our fast growing international membership, and to encourage correspondence between those with similar interests. The interests within MAVA run from Wold War One to the present day, although a greater emphasis is centred on the Second World War. The majority of members make and/or collect models, and there are many who only gather information on military subjects, whilst others work on, or even collect full sized military vehicles. In addition to this we aim to provide our members with a quality bi-monthly magazine ‘Tankette’. Local branches are being continually formed both in the UK and overseas, and are encouraged to hold meetings, displays and competitions to enable their members to get more out of their hobby, by meeting others with similar interests and to share information and expertise.
