How to Beat: ahq e-Sports Club, 2016 League of Legends World Championship Joseph “Strong” Edwards
Introduction Who are you? I’m Strong. Joseph “Strong” Edwards, 23, British, done analyst and coaching work for a couple of teams, most recently with HWA Gaming in the Turkish Champions League (3rd in regular season, playoffs: 3-2 vs Crew Esports Club, 2-3 vs Dark Passage) and Flash Point eSports in the NA challenger scene. Outside of League, my background is in American football; started out at Oxford University as a student (2x Varsity Bowl starter, 2013 & 2014; 1x Varsity Bowl captain, 2014), currently playing in the BAFA National Leagues with the Kent Exiles and coaching in BUCS competition with the King’s College London Regents.
What is this? This is a scouting report on ahq e-Sports Club for the 2016 League of Legends World Championship. Covered in here are details of pick-ban and compositional approaches, data on early-game macro (level 1s, early objectives, jungle pathing), and exploitable tendencies by ahq with regards to those facets.

Pathing key is on the next page. Data set comprises of games in LMS playoffs and regional finals (all on 6.15). Always starts top side, but apart from that, relatively inventive and flexible starts; happy to start buff or inner where pursuing an unusual path. Will invade on opponent’s second buff without scuttle support. Marked tendency to play bot-centric after initial clear but before first recall when bot has sufficient pressure to back him up (see HKE G3, FW G5, HKE G2, M17 G1, M17 G3) Rarely goes offensive on second buffs in terms of invades, but will typically look to skirmish and make plays on lanes. Notable: a significant lack of success in ganking bot as opposed to top or mid.
Pathing key
Each number or letter stands for a camp, objective, or lane. X and Y are scuttlers. Numbering is relative to direction (top vs bot) rather than to buffs. Camps on the player’s side have no special notation; camps on the opponent’s side are denoted with an *. If a player is noted as being at a camp, it represents at least a serious effort to take that camp (successful or otherwise). Conflict of any sort is denoted with a !; a kill for the player’s team is denoted with a +, a death on the player’s team is denoted with a -. So, for instance, if a player started bot side on blue, went golems -> red -> invaded blue, and a fight broke out there resulting in a 1-for-1 trade, the notation would be: [6][5][5*!+-]. The intent of this data is to provide a general, legible overview of a player’s early routing and tendencies, rather than to be a fully-detailed pathing report.

Notes
Adapted quickly to 6.15’s reduced demand for level 1 warding. By regional finals, default start was a 2ward setup – top and ADC warding out top and bottom, no wards between. M17 G1 a fairly clean example of this sort of start. Only example in regional finals series of a ‘heavy’ start was HKE G1 – Rek’Sai and hard pushing solo laners provided level 2 threat, so Gragas-Taliyah invade into wards on golems and connecting bush top. Following on from jungle pathing, clear adaptations mean that Mountain is unlikely to be punishable at 1st buff. Main point of interest are three-camp starts on blue-side Gragas, and aggression on Elise (invaded opponent’s 2nd in 3 out of 4 games) – trap/counter-jungle potential. Bot side invades – attempted camp start in 11 of 14 games. Exceptions were FW G4 (started in lane with Sivir-Alistar vs Ashe-Braum), M17 G2 (invaded with Ashe-Braum vs Sivir-Trundle), M17 G3 (invaded with Ezreal-Braum vs Caitlyn-Alistar). Bot side has only played against a combination with any early significant terrain deformation/pseudodeformation potential once (playoffs, vs Thresh, HKE G3); did not make any adaptation there. Sweeper start on mid – done all three games vs HKE in playoffs by Westdoor, but only one successful ward kill. Not seen since.

Notes
Secured T1B first in 11/14 games (3/5 vs FW), T1T first in 9/14 games (1/5 vs FW). Many early T1B secures came with relatively weak pushing ADCs, but 4/5 games of Sivir vs FW suggests a recognition that is a) important to the team and b) such liberties can't be taken vs better opposition. Relatively low herald priority given Ziv’s champion pool and perceived position within the team (and where taken, taken early); suggests Ziv’s importance as a skirmish player in ahq’s play, also suggests some issues with playing around Westdoor as a true split mid. Even in dominant games, fairly slow T1M times, and few rapid side T1 -> mid T1 plays; pure waveclear more important than anti-dive with regards to any notion of stalling out after an early tower deficit.

Priority refers to inclination for use (+ = a likely staple, / = in regular use, - = heavily situational). Priority in this sense does not necessarily correspond to draft priority, although expected contested early picks are bolded.
Notes
ahq compositions largely play around: o Variable lanes in terms of position pressure early, although top tends to be passive and mid/bot more aggressive. Almost always an eye towards superior 3v3s (with any combination of TJM, MAS, JAS) between levels 6 and 9. o Transition into mid-game: predicated on bot tower damage and 1.5-item top/mid. Generally pick fights towards top side rather than forcing bot tower, but bot tower is usually the first down because of the ongoing pressure onto it. o Mid and late is built on 1-4 and split fights with a pick-oriented jungle and mid; main peculiarity is tendency of mid or even ADC over top in the 1-role. Nature of the region means very few games have been at all even coming into the point. Pick & ban priority champions by player: o Ziv: Ekko. Unbeaten on Ekko, although some fortune in its absence from the FW series in that stat. Nonetheless, significant laning aptitude, and essential status as an AP Triforce bruiser is hard to find parallels for composition-wise (perhaps Diana?). o Mountain: Elise. Gragas nerfs sufficient to quell early potential, and Rek’Sai performances have been inconsistent; Elise only meta champion with versatility and lane pressure that will fit. o Westdoor: Twisted Fate, Lissandra. Unbeaten on Twisted Fate in 2016, not at all aberrant, cannot and should not be allowed through particularly given that it stands at an all-time high in terms of how competitive games are played post-6.15, pre-assassins rework. Lissandra not really meta, but has been a comfortable staple of Westdoor's, and notably one of the only champions where he has proven capable of producing above-average impact in terms of laning and damage even compared to other LMS mids. What of ascendant high-damage mids (Cassiopeia, Ryze)? Difficult to say – appears that Westdoor is gearing up to play, but DPM figures on Malzahar, Kassadin, Vladimir all utterly abysmal. Very unlikely to function vs Worlds teams, except maybe Ryze on pure utility grounds. o AN: Sivir, Ashe. Statistical figures on Sivir are mediocre, but very few ahq comps can’t make use of the short-range damage and utility, and the pressure laning is the only way that AN/Albis are likely to be able to survive at the Worlds level. Utility of Ashe is dangerous, particularly paired with typical picks at literally every other position. AN’s Ezreal looks strong, but laning weaknesses of the champion, statistical inflation vs HKE/M17, necessity of Tahm Kench or Braum to get through laning…not worth a ban or denial pick in isolation, although need to be aware of Ezreal (and Ezreal/Braum) as possibilities and the picks that it can punish (most notably Ashe). o Albis: Tahm Kench. While the combination plays with flanking and pick-based champions and composition are of course nice, the real frustrating thing about Tahm in the context of ahq is that it’s a tank/semi-engage support with the assistive wave clear to get an Ezreal etc. through laning. Ability to protect immobile ADCs (Jinx) also a consideration on 6.18 specifically.
