The Price of Coffee The brand does make a diference
A
ccording to Thomas K. McCraw, author of American Business, 1920–2000: How It Worked, brand marketing as we know it today began 83 years ago with an internal memo at Proctor & Gamble about how to differentiate soap brands, specifically Ivory and Camay, so they could compete effectively against competitive brands, but not against each other. That’s a concept very familiar to Joe Andrews, director of brand management at The Freedom Group, parent company of such well-known American brands as Remington, Bushmaster, Marlin, and DPMS, among others. His job is the “care and feeding” of the company’s products so they remain competitively positioned in the marketplace. That’s a tall order, but Andrews, a brand-management veteran of the packaged-goods industry, says he was drawn to FGI because of the power of its brands. “Look at it this way,” he says. “Products are things. Think of coffee, golf balls, and television sets. Brands are special. Now, think of Starbucks, Titleist, and Sony.” To Andrews, these brands mean something special to a consumer, and it’s one reason they can command premium pricing. “The best brands are experience brands, and this industry has brands that simply ooze experience.” One driving force behind what Andrews is doing is to make sure the company remains relevant to the Millennials (also known as Generation Y.) This group of 18-to-35-year-olds is some 88 million strong and has an estimated purchasing power of $170 billion. “Those numbers are staggering,” he says. That’s why it’s so important for manufacturers to connect with this group. But Millennials are a challenge because they access information in new ways. “Something like 85 percent of these guys sleep with a cell phone beside their bed, and they actually watch more video than television,” Andrews says. “In addition, 77 percent of them are using
another device while they’re watching TV. Whether they’re downloading apps or accessing online information, they’re doing it increasingly in a mobile environment. They’re using their smartphones to check features and prices before they even walk through the door.” According to Andrews, Gen Y is demanding a different relationship with brands. They want to be engaged in a way their Baby Boomer parents weren’t. “These folks are rightfully demanding a connection with their brands on a regular basis,” he says. “If they have something to say, they want to be heard. That’s why they use social media.” The challenge for a manufacturer, and a retailer, is that it is no longer a commandand-control universe. To connect with this key group you’re forced into a two-way conversation, something that is alien to many retailers in the shooting-sports industry. Andrews believes success depends on an ability to engage with this group on its terms. But it’s also about the individual power of your brand. So, think a bit. Is your store Starbucks, or is it merely any old cup of coffee?

Bushnell’s total sales for 2013 are projected to be approximately $600 million.
ATK Completes Acquisition of Bushnell Group Holdings ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES Everything to maintain, repair, customize and shoot guns All products 100% GUARANTEED – FOREVER Order our catalog
brownells.com 800-741-0015
ATK recently completed the acquisition of Bushnell Group Holdings Inc., a leading global designer, marketer, and distributor of sports optics, outdoor accessories, and performance eyewear. The Bushnell portfolio includes innovative and affordable products targeted to outdoor enthusiasts. “ATK is committed to expanding our product offerings, strengthening leadership positions in our core markets, maintaining a strong balance sheet, and delivering long-term, profitable growth,” says Mark DeYoung, ATK president and CEO. “Completing the Bushnell acquisition, plus our first-quarter acquisition of Savage Sports Corporation, positions ATK with a comprehensive product offering of ammunition, sporting arms, and accessories in our existing markets, and creates an opportunity to expand into new and adjacent outdoor recreation markets.” In September, ATK announced it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Bushnell. Under the terms of the transaction, ATK paid $985 million in cash, subject to customary post-closing adjustments. ATK financed the acquisition
through borrowings, including refinancing its existing secured debt with new $1.96 billion Senior Secured Credit Facilities and new $300 million Senior Unsecured Notes. Bushnell’s projected sales for calendar year 2013 are approximately $600 million. ATK will integrate Bushnell into its Sporting Group, under the direction of senior vice president and group president Jay Tibbets. Fitting within ATK Sporting Group’s existing accessories business, Bushnell increases the company’s exposure to higher-growth hunting and outdoor lifestyle markets. With the addition of Bushnell, the Sporting Group will account for approximately 45 percent of total ATK revenue. Across the enterprise, commercial and international sales will account for approximately 50 percent of ATK total revenue. “We are executing a focused integration strategy aimed at maximizing deal value, leveraging the strengths of our existing and new capabilities, optimizing common areas such as product development, sales, marketing, and distribution, while minimizing the risk of operational and customer disruptions,” says DeYoung.

Buffer Tech. Targets Recoil with Crosshair Buffer Technologies is now carrying the Crosshair recoil buffer, the design of which reduces bolt-impact recoil and improves accuracy. “Our goal at Buffer Technologies is to provide our customers with the best options in firearms accessories. That’s why we are now offering the Crosshair hydraulic recoil buffer. We learned recently that some of the other hydraulic buffers were going out of production, so we started looking for a suitable replacement. Adding Crosshair to our product offering made perfect sense,” says Rob Parham, director of operations at Buffer Technologies. The Crosshair dynamic recoil buffer is made from a corrosion-resistant highstrength aluminum alloy. It is easy to install and designed to improve accuracy and control by allowing shooters to better manage their rate of fire while reducing damage to expensive optics. According to Barnes Ballistic Research, the Crosshair buffer reduces average rearward bolt velocity by up to 16.2 percent compared to the stock rifle, while competing buffers reduced recoil by up to 12 percent. The slower the speed at which a bolt travels rearward, the less the recoil. This recoil buffer has shown a 22 percent reduction in bolt-travel speed. (buffertech.com)
Brightness, Durability and Interchangeability That’s what the third generation of HiViz sights has to ofer. Features include: • Strong, steel skeletonized sight body • Internal LitePipe locking mechanism provides the highest level reliability and longevity • Interchangeable LitePipes (included) Surveys show that shooters prefer HiViz quality, innovation, superior design and afordability, plus customer service is second to none. Brite-Strike’s All-Purpose Adhesive Light Strips (APALS) are a series of LEDs on slender aluminum strips with adhesive backing. The product, originally developed for the military and tactical markets as a replacement for chemical light sticks, benefits hunters as well. Last fall, Brite-Strike received some good news from the Department of Defense. The DOD assigned a National Stock Number to the APALS line. “Having a National Stock Number assigned by the DOD is a breakthrough for us,” says COO Ronald Johnson, a former Brigadier General USMC (Ret.). “It is the official label applied to an item of supply that is repeatedly procured, stocked, stored, issued, and used throughout the DOD/Federal supply system. The importance of an NSN cannot be overstated, as this will allow the military units in the U.S. and NATO countries ready access and simplified ability to order APALS in large quantity.” (508-746-8701; brite-strike.com)

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, independent gun barrel manufacturer E.R. Shaw is introducing its Mark VII VS (Varmint Special) centerfire rifle. The VS differs from the standard Mark VII in two key ways. First, it is based upon a RH single-shot stainless-steel action with a minimal-size ejection port—two features that make for a much stiffer receiver. As any accuracy-obsessed shooter knows, the more rigid the receiver, the greater the accuracy potential.
Second, E.R. Shaw offers a nearly unlimited selection of barrels, allowing a customer options that other manufacturers cannot provide. The straight-taper varmintweight barrel can be ordered in lengths from 18 to 28 inches in chrome-moly or stainless. Barrels also can be ordered with straight or E.R. Shaw’s patented helical fluting. With stainless barrels, flutes can be blackened; the fluting’s contrast with the raw stainless matte surface finish lends the rifle a highly distinctive look. (412-2213406; ershawbarrels.com)
Otis Awarded U.S. Army Gun-Cleaning Contract Otis Technology, a defense contractor for the U.S. government since the early 1990s, was recently awarded a three-year contract to provide I-Mod (individual) and T-Mod (team) guncleaning supplies to the U.S. Army. Deliveries are set to begin in May 2014. Otis Technology provides a variety of guncleaning systems and accessories to the government, and most recently, Otis supplied the IWCK (Individual Weapons Cleaning Kit). The new contract replaces the IWCK contract and addresses the need for both individual and team cleaning systems. Initial deliveries may include both the I-Mod and T-Mod. The I-Mod cleaning system is intended for the indi-
vidual soldier to use and cleans 5.56mm weapons systems. It includes the new Ripcord, a Gerber MP600 multi-tool, and additional components to clean properly from breech to muzzle. The T-Mod system is intended for a squad and contains equipment to clean 5.56mm, 7.62mm, 9mm, and .45 weapon systems. Both systems feature

For that reason, the amount can range anywhere from the minimum amount of $10,000 over three years to the maximum amount of $39.2 million over the three-year contract. “We are proud to be chosen as the premier supplier of individual and teamready cleaning systems for the Army,” says Nancy Davoy, contract manager for Otis Technology. “We will continue to be on the front lines with our servicemen and women, helping to keep them safe. Daniel Defense Helps Combat-Wounded Veteran Daniel Defense CEO Marty Daniel has always admired those who join the armed forces, and not too long ago, he got an opportunity to show his appreciation in a very tangible and meaningful way.
Through the Military Warrior Support Foundation, Daniel Defense learned of Specialist Justin Foley, a soldier who had been injured when the armored vehicle he was in struck an Improvised Explosive
Device (IED). Foley now awaits medical retirement from the U.S. Army. Military Warriors Support Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, founded by Lt. General Leroy Sisco, USA (Ret.), in 2007. The foundation’s mission is to provide support for our nation’s combatwounded heroes and Gold Star Families as they transition out of the military and into their new civilian life. “This is a very fragile time for these heroes and their families, and our goal is to provide programs that facilitate a smooth and successful transition,” says Josh Kinser, spokesman for the Military Warrior Support Foundation. The programs include home donation, and academic and employment assistance, as well as recreational activities. To that end, Daniel Defense, with gratitude, presented Foley and his wife with the gift of a mortgage-free home. During a military tribute at the Inaugural Patriot Weekend in Pooler, Georgia, a check for $22,500 was presented to the Warrior Transition Battalion on Ft. Stewart. Shortly after, Specialist Foley, assigned to WTB Bravo Company, was given a ceremonial key to the home. “We at Daniel Defense recognize the sacrifice the men and women of the United States Armed Forces make every day, and we wanted to ensure that their dedication and care for the safety of their fellow Americans does not go unnoticed,” Daniel says. After nearly 200 years of producing firearms, Remington Arms is now leading customers even deeper into the outdoors—as outfitters. The new Remington Country Outfitters is a full-service outdoor-travel agency with hunting and fishing destinations across North and South America, Africa, and the Bahamas. Remington Country Outfitters (RCO) started with a simple idea, say father-andson co-founders Carl and C.J. Brown. “We knew what it was like to go to a place and find that it just was not right,” Carl says, “So we wanted to help people find great places to hunt and fish.” Scott Blackwell, president of Remington Arms, shared the vision. Taking “make it right” as their mantra, the team dedicated more than a year to building RCO. They considered safety, lodging, facilities, and the quality of the hunting and fishing opportunities. They researched destinations and outdoor experiences. And they chose trusted local outfitters to make the experiences happen. Confident that the scouting had been done properly, the team has hung out their outfitter’s shingle at Remington Country.com. “We’re offering a select number of highquality hunting and fishing options that live up to Remington legacy, offer the right amenities, and have high success rates,” says Carl. “We have something for just about everybody—from hog hunting to yacht-based brown bear hunts. The prices range from a few hundred dollars a day up to $30,000 for a trip.” Remington Country Outfitters features opportunities that include hunting destinations in nine U.S. states, Canada, Mexico,
Argentina, and South Africa, where hunters can pursue antelope, brown and black bears, caribou, ducks, hogs, elk, grouse, moose, mountain goats, mule and whitetail deer, pigeons, quail, sheep, turkeys, woodcock, and other game. Fishing destinations include Alaska, the Bahamas, Colorado, and Manitoba, where anglers can pursue Arctic grayling, bonefish, halibut, lake trout, salmon, ling cod, northern pike, red snapper, walleyes, and other species. Family vacation destinations were an important consideration, too. Destinations in this category include Colorado and Maine, and the varied offerings include flyfishing, shotgunning, cooking classes, wildlife viewing, hunting, rafting, equestrian activities, mountain biking, nature tours, and other family-friendly activities. The outfitter website offers destination overviews, photographs, planning resources, gear lists, firearms recommendations, sample itineraries, and rates. Once a customer has a trip in mind, they can either use the online system to make reservations or they can call directly. “However you do it, we’re with you every step of the way,” says C.J. “We’re constantly in contact, helping you plan your trip and air travel, secure your dates, and get trip insurance. We provide gear lists to make sure you’re prepared. And we help with licenses, preference points, any deadlines, and just about anything else.” “Our goal is to exceed your expectations,” says Carl. “We look at every trip like it’s one of our own. We want your trip to be just like one we would book for ourselves.” (888-283-7336; remington country.com) —Shane Townsend

New Year’s Outlook
Expectations and hopes for 2014
H
ow glad we all are that the roller-coaster year of 2013 is over! Beginning as it did in the awful shadow of the Newtown tragedy in December 2012, we were in the fight of our lives in the face of multiple legislative and media onslaughts. Indeed, the vice president essentially told us to capitulate to the administration’s gun-control agenda or be washed away, along with the Second Amendment, in the tidal wave of public grief.
Thankfully, with some significant exceptions at the state level—where antigun sentiments prevailed in one-party steamrollers—logic, facts, and common sense prevailed over emotions, fear, and blind hostility toward gun owners, lawfully owned firearms, and our industry. Subsequent efforts to veto, modify, or delay some of the worst of these measures, together with successful recall efforts to some vocal proponents of draconian anti-gun laws, seems to have taken the wind out of the sails of the anti-gun movement—for now. So we enter 2014 with a sense of optimism, a feeling that they took their best shot at us and missed. Exploitation of tragedy will always be a hallmark of the anti-gun movement, but the resounding show of unity and anger at our unjustified vilification shocked even the most stalwart opponents of the lawful enjoyment of firearms. Paradoxically, this may mean a gradual continuation of the slow return of firearms sales to more normal levels. However, we’re not quite certain what the “new normal” might be, as record numbers of new firearms owners, recreational shooters, hunters, and first-time buyers who purchased firearms for personal protection have been added to our ranks during the last five years. The signature goal of NSSF and the affiliated organizations that combined forces as “Task Force 20-20” in 2008 was
to increase participation in hunting and the shooting sports by 20 percent by 2014. This was a true “stretch goal”—yet, amazingly, our research on the measurable growth of a large number of hunting and recreational shooting programs seems to indicate that by working together, our industry actually met that landmark goal! The challenge will be to retain those new hunters and target shooters, as well as to motivate existing participants and those who have dropped out of active participation. This will mean continued development and enhancement of range facilities (both indoor and outdoor), new range construction, continuing to enhance retail facilities to keep people coming back, and continual creation and revitalization of new recreational shooting disciplines. This we are committed to do. America’s changing demographic makeup will also be addressed in this and future years. This is a seemingly daunting task, though it must be remembered that most of us have come from immigrant ancestors. Even those who arrive without any cultural or family history of firearms ownership or enjoyment of the shooting sports can become lifetime hunters and recreational shooters through programs like NSSF’s First Shots and a careful introduction and nurturing into our sports by friendly mentors. We will all throw ourselves into this task with great anticipation and sincere hopes of success.
As ammunition purchasers come to realize that ammunition and components are gradually becoming more available on retailers’ shelves, the artificial ammunition shortage will abate, as the hoarding mentality of many shooters returns to normal expectations of product availability. With more ammunition available, expect to see more shooters returning to the ranges and enjoying afternoons afield, whether hunting or just plinking and passing on family traditions to new generations. It is undeniable that modern sporting rifles are here to stay, and even though we’ve never seen more manufacturers of them, market specialization has made a wide variety of “pre-accessorized” models available to suit every personal preference and pocketbook. Add to this the huge variety of accessories available for those who already own these hugely popular rifles, and it’s a safe bet that we will continue to see more and more of these firearms on the range and in the hunting fields. So, 2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year—different, with changing market expectations, but still one with a bright outlook for the industry and devotees of America’s shooting sports and outdoor traditions.

Rep. Bob Latta Introduces New Sportsmen’s Act
I
n late 2013, Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) co-chair Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) introduced HR 3590, a new bipartisan version of the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act of 2013. Earlier last year, Latta and CSC co-chair Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), joined by vice-chairs U.S. Reps. Rob Wittman (R-Va.) and Tim Walz (D-Minn.), introduced the SHARE Act as a package of pro-sportsmen legislation designed to safeguard and promote America’s hunting and fishing traditions. The legislation enjoys wide support from both sides of the political aisle. “The SHARE Act is made up of several pro-sportsmen bills that will help ensure our outdoor traditions are preserved, protected, and promoted,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel. “H.R. 3590 addresses some of the most pressing concerns of American hunters and recreational shooters. Its passage would be a significant accomplishment for the sportsmen’s com-

munity and for America. We salute Congressman Latta for his continuing stewardship of this important legislation.”
Priorities addressed in the SHARE Act include: protecting the traditional use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle by American hunters and anglers; the potential increase of Pittman-Robertson funds for shooting ranges; the permanent authorization of the electronic duck stamp; and helping facilitate the use of and access to Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service lands and waters for hunting, recreational fishing, and shooting. It also prohibits the enforcement of individual firearm regulations at water-resources development projects administered by the Corps of Engineers and prohibits additional fees for commercial filming on federal lands and waterways. In addition, this legislation will also permanently establish the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council Advisory Committee to advise the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture on wildlife and habitat conservation, hunting, and recreational shooting.
Cabela’s Partners with NSSF and Project ChildSafe The National Shooting Sports Foundation and Cabela’s Inc., “the World’s Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing, and outdoor gear,” have announced a new partnership to promote firearm safety in support of NSSF’s Project ChildSafe program. “Both Cabela’s and the National Shooting Sports Foundation place a premium on firearms safety and responsibility,” said Scott Williams, Cabela’s chief marketing officer. “Cabela’s is proud to support Project ChildSafe and help educate firearm owners on the importance of safe and proper firearm storage.” In providing its support, Cabela’s joins a growing list of leaders in the hunting and target-shooting world—including USA Shooting, Outdoor Channel, and many of the nation’s largest hunting, shooting, and outdoors publishers—that

have endorsed and supported Project ChildSafe’s mission this year. “We’re thrilled to have Cabela’s involved in this effort,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. “This is another powerful testimony to the strong belief in and commitment to firearms safety and responsibility in the sporting community. The hunting and shooting
community is the largest audience and the best source of ambassadors for these messages. The more we can empower them to deliver those messages to their families and others in their community, the more we can help prevent firearms accidents.” Not as familiar with Project ChildSafe as you’d like to be? Two More Familiar Names Return to List of SHOT Sponsors The SHOT Show, scheduled for 2014 for Jan. 14–17, receives support from the shooting, hunting, and outdoor trade in many ways, including sponsorships of particular aspects of the show. Two familiar names that have signed on again as sponsors are ArmaLite and GunBroker.com. ArmaLite Inc., the internationally known manufacturer of AR-10, M-15, AR-30, and AR-50 rifles, is returning as the title sponsor of SHOT Mobile. The SHOT Mobile app allows show attendees to search for exhibitors, navigate the show floor by using interactive maps, find new products, learn about show specials, view the show’s education schedule (such as for SHOT Show University), set up appointments with exhibitors, request callbacks, and find show services. GunBroker.com, the world’s largest online auction site for firearms and related accessories, will return as exclusive sponsor of the NSSF Member Lounge and Business Center. NSSF members will find free wireless service among many other amenities in the NSSF Member Lounge and Business Center, which serves as a central point for NSSF members to take a break from the show floor or to net-
work and conduct business. Chris Dolnack, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which owns and sponsors the SHOT Show, praised these two sponsors. “GunBroker.com continues to be an extraordinary partner of NSSF and the SHOT Show,” he said. “GunBroker.com is a great example of an NSSF member that makes the extra effort to help grow hunting and the shooting sports, from supporting the SHOT Show and the Shooting Sports Summit to distributing NSSF’s ‘Pull The Trigger’ newsletter to its list of nearly 1 million opt-in e-mail subscribers.” Dolnack added, “We are extremely pleased that ArmaLite will be the title sponsor of SHOT Mobile. This show-navigation technology enriches the SHOT Show experience for buyers and attendees. We greatly appreciate ArmaLite’s support in this effort.” In recognition of ArmaLite’s continued support, the splash screen of the SHOT Mobile app, the SHOT Mobile webpage, and the app download section of iTunes will feature the company’s logo.
Visited Range Report Lately?
O
nce thought of strictly as a quarterly magazine for shooting facilities, The Range Report has become a 24/7 resource for the shooting range industry. Since May of last year, the publication has been distributed monthly as an electronic newsletter, which has a permanent home online at range report.org. There, visitors read not only all of the feature articles and popular departments that appear in the most current newsletter, but also archived features and
departments. In addition, on a frequent basis, headlines in the news related to the shooting range industry are
refreshed on the website’s Ranges in the News section, along with links to the original news reports. “The Range Report has always been the publication for shooting range facilities, and its new e-newsletter and website format makes it an even more valuable
resource,” said Glenn Sapir, NSSF director, editorial services, who has served as the longtime editor. “Now that The Range Report is housed in one place—nssf.org—visitors can find current and past articles, keep an eye on rangerelevant news, and even conveniently send a comment or suggestion.” The website also provides the opportunity to subscribe to The Range Report to receive the free monthly e-newsletter. If you haven’t visited the website, become acquainted with rangereport.org.

NSSF Delivers Value Premium Retailers’ Free Compliance Consultation
ONE MEMBER’S EXPERIENCE
D
esigned to offer the best protection and benefits in the industry, NSSF’s new Premium Retailer Membership is now available to any qualifying retailer member with an FFL who has been an NSSF member in good standing for at least a year. At the heart of the program is a defense fund to help retailers protect their businesses against administrative actions taken by ATF and judicial proceedings challenging an ATF license revocation. To help Premium Retailer Members become aware of any compliance issues in their operation, an NSSF FFL Compliance Consultant will make a free visit to the member’s store to review operations and make recommendations where helpful. Visit nssf.org/retailers to learn more about NSSF Premium Retailer Membership.

“We at Gunslinger Arms were in the process of opening our second retail location in Berryville, Virginia, when the Premium Retailer Membership was ofered from NSSF. As a former federal law enforcement ofcer, I always keep ATF compliance at the forefront of everything we do. The NSSF Premium Retailer Membership ofers a free compliance consultation with former ATF ofcials. I took full advantage of this opportunity and met NSSF consultant Wally Nelson at our shop. Mr. Nelson spent the better part of a day with us reviewing records and going over compliance concerns. His knowledge and expertise with compliance were worth every dollar spent on the NSSF Premium Retailer Membership.” Value of NSSF membership:
“NSSF’s Premium Retailer Membership ofers protection and benefts to my company like no other in the industry. For me as a small frearms retailer, the NSSF Premium Retailer Membership ofers a plethora of resources that make me feel as if I have an entire team working alongside me. My membership gives me access to the legal defense fund, a free NSSF compliance visit, 24/7 compliance hotline, a copy of NSSF’s compliance compendium, NSSF research and reference materials, a free ticket to Shot Show University, and Shot Show VIP access. The legal defense fund and free compliance consultation alone are worth more to my business than the annual Premium Membership fees.”

Retailer Education Seminars A free opportunity for all frearms retailers
O
ne of the great tools that the National Shooting Sports Foundation offers to all firearms retailers is ATF compliance education in the form of our free Retailer Education Seminars. NSSF, with the mission to help protect the shooting industry, is providing 12 Retailer Education Seminars for 2014. We hold these seminars to deliver the latest in compliance materials and information regarding ATF operations. The half-day seminars are designed to provide information that will benefit both veteran firearms retailers and those just getting into the business of selling firearms. The seminars are free for all Federal Firearms License (FFL) holders, so 45 days prior to the event, notices will be sent to all FFL holders near the host city. The seminars are presented by NSSF’s FFL Compliance Consultants, all of whom are former ATF officials with extensive field experience. Our consultants have conducted and overseen literally thousands of store audits, and will be on hand to share their expertise and knowledge as they review all facets of ATF compliance. Based upon member and attendee feedback, we have added an hour to the course and have added new sessions. The complete listing of seminar topics includes: ➤ Error-Proofing Your 4473 Forms (Seventy percent of all errors are found in the 4473 form, and once found, can be easily corrected.) ➤ Acquisition and Disposition (A&D) Book: Ins and Outs
➤ How to Take a Firearms Inventory Like the ATF (We can’t stress this enough: please take a regular inventory of all firearms!) ➤ When You Are Inspected by the ATF (Session covers what the inspection entails, what information you are required to provide, and how to be prepared when the ATF arrives.) ➤ Store Security Best Practices ➤ Gun Show Sales
➤ Internet Sales of Firearms ➤ Straw Purchase Awareness ➤ FBC NICS/POC Background Check Process (In POC states, we ask the state authorities to attend and present on the particulars of their background check system.) The seminar ends with a question-andanswer period, during which our team will address any concerns
retailers have about ATF compliance. The seminars have been very successful, educating thousands of retailers about best practice compliance procedures, understanding the NICS background checks process, and providing tips on store security procedures and inventory controls. SHOT Show Helps Fund NSSF
Show revenue signifcant in industry programs
O
ne of the great programs that the National Shooting Sports Foundation conducts every year is the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show, better known as the SHOT Show. As owner and sponsor of the show, NSSF works closely with management companies to produce the world’s largest trade show for our industry, providing an international crossroads for businesses and businesspeople, ranging from manufacturers to retailers to more than 2,000 credentialed members of the media. All together, more than 60,000 industry members participate in the SHOT Show, which this year is being held once again at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas. The immediate benefits of this NSSF program are obvious: Exhibitors get to display their latest offerings and information on products and services, retailers gain a hands-on familiarity with the same, and media personnel get to preview the many products their readers and viewers will be purchasing in the coming year. Of course, the benefits of the show extend beyond that. Informal networking and more formal educational opportunities present themselves. In a wide variety of ways, an annual visit to the SHOT Show is a wise investment in a businessperson’s future. Not so obvious is the investment every participant is making in building the resources of NSSF, which, in turn, can channel the SHOT Show profits toward its many undertakings during the rest of the calendar year, all aimed at fulfilling its mission to “Promote, Protect, and Preserve Hunting and the Shooting Sports.” By fulfilling that mission, NSSF is paving the way for better business opportunities for all in the industry. Participation in the SHOT Show generates as much as 80 percent of the funding for NSSF programs. One such effort is a proactive government relations program to guard your rights and business interests. In addition, NSSF invests SHOT Show revenue in customer-recruitment cam-
paigns, such as Families Afield and First Shots. The former has actively remedied legislative barriers preventing family hunting participation, and the latter has offered newcomers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of firearms and firearms ownership at member ranges, while actually experiencing the fun of shooting under the careful supervision of qualified instructors. Families Afield was born eight years ago as a joint initiative of NSSF, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, and having since picked up support from the NRA and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, the initiative has fostered the adoption of measures in 35 states, resulting in more than 1 million apprentice hunting licenses being sold.
An annual visit to the SHOT Show is a wise investment in a businessperson’s future, and in the future of the shooting sports industry.
First Shots continues to be presented in ranges around the country, and by the end of 2013, nearly 7,000 people had become new shooters through the program. Another NSSF investment of SHOT Show revenue is in the Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative (CSSI), which provides money to help establish new shooting programs on college campuses at nearby shooting facilities. CSSI helps strengthen existing collegiate varsity and club shooting programs, and aids in the founding of new ones. In the long run, the entire hunting and sport-shooting industry benefits from the revenue produced at the SHOT Show, and the greatest beneficiaries are the members of NSSF. NSSF’s government relations efforts, perhaps most famous for championing the passage of legislation that preempted the frivolous lawsuits that nearly crippled the industry, continue the fight in state capitals, in Washington, D.C., and in the courts to protect the interests of our industry. NSSF research gathers information, including customized market surveys, that help businesses better understand industrywide trends as well as local demographics. At SHOT Show, formal educational opportunities present themselves through SHOT Show University and Retailer Seminars. Throughout the year, in different parts of the country, Retailer Education Seminars give FFLs a better understanding of ATF compliance requirements. These many activities of NSSF are only a sampling of the programs that are funded, in great part, by the revenue generated at the SHOT Show.

FIRING LINE
BY JOCK ELLIOTT
The ReAxis gas-piston powerplant supplies the Umarex Octagon with an impressive amount of downrange force.
It’s a Gas!
T
The Umarex Octagon is a gas-spring air rifle that’s both powerful and accurate he Octane is Umarex’s first venture into making and bringing to market a gas-spring break-barrel air rifle. The 48.5-inch, 10-pound 3-ounce air rifle (with included scope) delivers a ton of power, accompanied by a neighbor-friendly report.
Available in .177 caliber and .22, the heart of the Octane is a powerplant that Umarex has dubbed “ReAxis Reverse-Axis Gas Piston.” The powerplant uses a gas cylinder, similar to the gas strut that lifts the rear gates of mini-vans and SUVs, to store and release energy. By contrast, conventional springpiston airguns use a steel spring for energy storage. The ReAxis mechanism works like a conventional powerplant: When you pull the barrel down and back, you drive the piston down the cylinder, compressing the gas inside the gas spring. The cocked powerplant sits there, storing energy until the shooter pulls the trigger. Then the gas spring drives the piston forward, compressing air in front of it until the compressed air squirts
through the transfer port into the breech, blasting the pellet down the barrel. There are several advantages to the gas-spring powerplant. There is no spring noise; it’s as silent and smooth as a bank vault and requires about 42 pounds of effort on the Octane. There’s no spring torque, twang, or vibration when the shot goes off; all you’ll feel is a quick pulse of recoil. Further, you can leave a gas-piston airgun cocked for days without worrying that a steel spring is going to weaken. Finally, experienced air-rifle hunters report that gas-spring air rifles are easier to shoot well off sticks or a rest because they are less “hold sensitive” than conventional spring-piston air rifles. ReAxis is unique in that the gas spring operates in reverse
of other gas springs, providing more mass behind the piston. The result is more power at the muzzle. Although the Octane box claims “1,250 fps with alloy pellets” and “1,050 fps with lead pellets,” for greatest accuracy, it’s best to keep pellets well below the speed of sound (1,100 fps at sea level). The .22 Octane I tested would launch 14.3-grain pellets at 838 fps average for an impressive 22.5 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. With proper shot placement, that’s more than enough to anchor that raccoon that has been molesting your garbage cans or a woodchuck in the garden. The Octane, which comes with a three-year warranty, features an all-weather ambidextrous composite thumbhole stock with a soft-rubber butt-
pad. The two-stage adjustable trigger lets off at about 3.5 pounds. The 3–9x40 AO duplex reticle scope mounts onto the receiver through a Picatinny rail adaptor. In addition to the scope, there are front and rear fiber-optic sights. At the end of the 19.5-inch barrel is the SilencAir, a molded polymer five-chamber nonremovable airgun-silencing system. SilencAir drops the report significantly, which should help to keep the peace with the neighbors. I found the Octane to be solidly built and fun to shoot. I was impressed by its power and smooth operation. At 20 yards, it delivered dime-sized five-shot groups. I could happily recommend it for hunting and pest control. SRP: $245. (479-6464210; umarexusa.com)
Selling the Octane
Remind the customer the Octane is a self-contained, all-in-one hunting and pest control package. All you need are pellets. Point out that the ReAxis gas-spring powerplant promises years of trouble-free operation, and it comes with a three-year warranty. Consider a graphic display of the Octane’s power. Shoot a section of two-by-four from the side with the Octane, then use a nail or a dowel to show how far the pellet penetrated into the wood. It’s impressive. Put the section of board next to where you display the Octane. The penetration power of the Octane also points out the need for a high-quality pellet trap for sighting-in and target practice. 24❚❚❚SHOT BUSINESS❚❚❚JANUARY 2014

UNDERCOVER SHOPPER
Deer Me!
raveling through Wisconsin in the early fall, I noted that many of the gas stations, taverns, and storefronts already had their traditional “Welcome Deer Hunters!” signs up. Which got me thinking: With so many new, bargain-priced long guns on the market, what might I find locally in the way of an affordable, bolt-action deer rifle, in the ubiquitous .30/06 Springfield? My search focused on big-box stores in the Wausau metro area and the nearby city of Marshfield.
STORE A
AT LEAST IT’S AN OPINION
➤ My first stop was a large retailer dedicated to hunting, camping, fishing, and related activities. The gun counter was busy, and it took a few minutes for a clerk to make his way to me. I told him what I was looking for, and referenced an instore flyer I’d grabbed at the door, which listed a new Ruger American at $349, well within my $500-and-under budget. The clerk—let’s call him “Bill”—was in his mid-20s. He said, for my price range, this Ruger was what he’d buy. He had a Ruger himself for deer hunting. He also showed me two Remington models and a Savage, all the while insist-
ing the Ruger was superior. Had he used the non-Ruger rifles? No, he admitted, he had not. Had he heard bad things about them from customers? Nope. So why was the Ruger so much better? I asked. “Better tolerances,” Bill claimed.
STORE B
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE
➤ Next stop was a large general retailer that sold firearms. I found the hunting section in the back, thanks to the fullsize deer archery target mounted atop the counters. The gun selection consisted of two upright glass cases, one of rifles,
the other of shotguns. I had to wait a good five minutes before the clerk, “Chad,” showed up. He said he had three rifles that might fit my criteria. He did, and he let me handle each rifle. But as I began asking questions, Chad admitted he knew next to nothing about firearms or hunting. “I’m really more into camping and hiking,” he said, rather apologetically. He quickly added that he could check the computer for inventory, and anything I wanted could be in-store within the week.

UNDERCOVER SHOPPER retailer with large selections of athletic clothing and shoes, plus weight-lifting and other workout equipment. Yet, the store also boasted a surprisingly large hunting and firearms area. “Sam” was at the gun counter, and he greeted me immediately. Sam first handed me a Remington Model 783. With a mail-in rebate, the sales price was $320, which seemed like a darned good deal. He even had one in .30/06. He also showed me a Savage Axis, a rifle that was selling very well for them, he noted. He mentioned that customers were saying positive things about the rifle. Sam had a Savage, though not an Axis, and he felt they made a top-notch rifle.
He admitted he knew very little about the Remington 783, or the Remington 770 that was also on sale.

FARM-FRESH SERVICE WITH A SMILE
➤ Late for an appointment, I left Wausau and drove 40 miles or so east to Marshfield. Here, I found another larger retailer, this one more focused on farm equipment and hardware than the other three, but it had a well-stocked hunting and firearms section. “Can I help you, sir?” the firearms clerk, “Phil,” asked. It wasn’t until I heard his greeting that I realized the pre-
vious clerks had limited their salutations to “Hey.” Phil showed me a Savage Axis with 3–9X scope, on sale, and, without asking, checked his computerized inventory and found three of these in .30/06. He also showed me a Remington 783 and a Ruger American, again checking the .30/06 inventory on both models. Phil had fired the Ruger and the Savage. He noted that all three rifles had sold very well in the last two months, and he’d not had a single one returned for defects or problems. Before I left, Phil added that he had a full selection of .30/06 ammunition in various bullet weights. He also thanked me for stopping by.

All my questions were answered, although the clerk had a tendency to stare out over the store, seemingly disinterested in what I was saying.
The clerk knew the Ruger pretty well, but after that....
Had one of each model in my desired caliber.
The clerk was friendly and willing to help, but this hiker and camper was completely out of his depth behind a gun counter.
The clerk admitted his complete lack of firearms knowledge. One star for honesty!
Had one of each of the rifles I would have considered, at good prices.
The clerk was attentive to my questions.
The counterman had fired a model similar to the first rifle he showed me, but didn’t know much about the other options that were available.
Among the three models I was shown, only one .30/06 was on hand, although the clerk could get me another in a week.
The clerk had a firearms background, very apparent from his quick comparison of three rifle models. He’d personally shot two of them.
Had two to three of each model and caliber on hand.

ver the past year, manufacturers have worked overtime to produce a rich and varied crop of rifles, shotguns, and handguns. These new models—some completely new, some extensions of popular existing product lines—should have broad-based consumer appeal, which is good news for retailers. Even more important, these models are peppered over a broad price spectrum, meaning just about any buyer will find something exciting in his or her price range.

This year off offers retailers one of the richest and most varied selections of new rifle introductions in memory memory. The modern sporting rifle is well represented with introductions in both 5.56mm and 7 7.62mm NATO, while new tactical bolt guns also appear fr from several makers. In the hunting field, new camo finishes and caliber additions appe appear in many product lines, and a surprising number of new rimfire mods will al els also be available. Lever-action aficionados will find some surprises as well. gardl Regardless of the target, 2014 offers a new way to hit it. ARMALITE î For 2014, ArmaLite introduces the AR-31 rifle system. It shares the same design features as the company’s AR-30A1 (detachable magazine, precision accuracy), but there are some differences. The AR-31 is a short-action version chambered in 7.62 NATO/.308 Win., and as such it accepts ArmaLite double-stacked AR-10B magazines. That allows shooters to choose between magazines with a capacity of 5, 10, 15, and 20 rounds to suit current requirements. Like its predecessor, the AR-31 is built upon a throughhardened receiver, which for this gun has been optimally sized for the 7.62 NATO cartridge. The 24-inch barrel is capped with ArmaLite’s onepiece muzzle brake with industry-standard ⅝-24 threads, which allows many suppressors to be screwed directly to the
barrel without an adapter. The wide and deep magazine well extends under the receiver, which makes magazine insertion fast and easy while in a shooting position. The magazine catch is conveniently located so that the shooter can release the magazine and catch it with the same hand. This not only makes loading/reloading quick, it virtually assures that magazines won’t be lost in rough terrain. The bolt-mounted safety locks the firing pin to the rear to prevent accidental discharges. The stock system allows the buttstock to be interchanged between the same standard and target models used on the AR-30A1, with only the use of an Allen wrench. The cheekpieces are metal with a pad, and the cheekpiece supports contain an integral cleaning rod guide that prevents bore damage caused by improper
cleaning-rod guidance. The included top Picatinny rail allows for 20 minutes of rail adjustment to allow for proper zeroing at extended ranges. (800-336-0184; armalite.com)
BROWNING î New in Browning’s 2014 catalog is the AB3 bolt-action, designed to give consumers a value-packed rifle that has Browning quality and accuracy, but at a more affordable price. The new AB3 will be offered with a composite stock and a matte blued finish receiver and barrel. Other features include a 60-degree bolt lift, detachable box magazine, top-tang safety, bolt-lock override button, freefloating barrel, and an Inflex Technology recoil pad. Average weight is 6 pounds 13 ounces in standard calibers, and 7 pounds 3 ounces in magnums. The new AB3 will be available in .270
Win. and .30/06 Sprg. with a 22-inch barrel length, and 7mm Rem. Mag. and .300 Win. Mag. in 26-inch barrel. SRP: $599.99. In addition, Browning will expand the X-Bolt bolt-action lineup to include the new X-Bolt Eclipse Hunter model for 2014. Features include a matte blued finish on a freefloating barrel and receiver. A laminated gray satin-finish stock has a thumbhole grip with Monte Carlo cheekpiece. Other standard features found on all X-bolt rifles include a detachable rotary magazine, adjustable Feather Trigger, 60-degree bolt lift, and the Inflex Technology recoil pad. SRP: $1,019.99 to $1,059.99. (801876-2711; browning.com)

Training Rifle (SRP: $374) moves the popular .22LR training rifle into the 455 boltaction rifle platform. Like its predecessor, it has a 24.8-inch barrel, a tangent rear sight that is adjustable for distance, and a beechwood stock with a Schnabel forend. The biggest difference is the ability to change the barrels and stocks, a trait possessed by all 455 models. The 455 Training Rifle is shipped with a five-round polymer magazine, but a single-shot adapter and 10round magazines are available. The 455 Precision Trainer (SRP: $940) is designed to provide the same look and feel as a full-size tactical bolt-action rifle while allowing for economical .22LR training. It features a Manners Composite T4 stock (made of multiple layers of carbon fiber and fiberglass handlaid in high-temperature epoxy resins that are vacuum heat cured) with a new camouflage paint pattern and a .866-inchdiameter heavy barrel. The 455 American Synthetic Suppressor-Ready (SRP: $421) features a 16.5-inch barrel in .22LR that is factory-threaded to accept muzzle devices using ½-28 threads. The stock is black synthetic with a softtouch finish. The 455 Varmint Tacticool Suppressor-Ready (SRP: $549) sports a 16.5-inch varmint barrel with a factorycut ½-28 thread pattern that accepts many aftermarket suppressors. The CZ 557 bolt-action is a new addition to the line and a departure from the Mauserstyle bolt found on the company’s 550 models. It features a short extractor and plungerstyle ejector, commonly called a “push feed system,” that provides smooth operation with
enhanced ejection and also makes it easier to load single rounds into the chamber—a feature many shooters prefer for range work. The new receiver is machined from steel billet, and has CZ’s integral 19mm dovetails for scope mounting. Equipped with a two-position safety, the bolt can be cycled while the safety is in the “on” position. The trigger mechanism is fully adjustable to tune pull weight, creep, and overtravel. The 557 will be available in both short- and long-action models, depending upon caliber, and in three distinct model variations. The 557 Sporter Manners (SRP: $1,268) is available in .30/06 Sprg., .270 Win., and 6.5x55mm. It features a 20.5inch barrel (without sights), a hinged floor-plate magazine with a four-round capacity, and the Manners composite carbon-fiber stock in Coyote Tan. Empty weight is 6.7 pounds. The 557 Sporter (SRP: $792) will be available in .30/06 Sprg., .243 Win., .270 Win., 6.5x55mm, and .308 Win. It features a classic walnut stock without a cheekpiece and a 20.5-inch barrel without sights. Empty weight is 7.8 pounds. The 557 Carbine (SRP: $812) is available in .30/06 Sprg., .243 Win., .270 Win., 6.5x55mm and .308 Win. It features a walnut stock with cheekpiece as well as a 20.5-inch barrel with an elevation-adjustable fiber-optic front sight and a windageadjustable rear sight. Four new models enter the classic Mauser bolt-action 550 line this year. The 550 Badlands (SRP: $2,599) is chambered for the .338 Lapua and designed to deliver massive energy at extended ranges. At 800 yards the .338 Lapua 300-grain hunt-

CZ-USA A number of new bolt-actions are joining the CZ line this year, including the 455 Varmint Precision Training Rifle (left), the 550 Badlands (right), and the 557 Sporter Manners. Each is available in a variety of calibers and configurations. Also joining the crowd is the 550 Magnum H.E.T. II.
ing loads deliver more than 2,000 foot-pounds of energy, making it more than adequate for any North American game, as well as most African species. The 550 Badlands action is anchored in an Americanpatterned Kevlar-reinforced stock with a full-length aluminum bedding block. The premium 25-inch medium-weight barrel is equipped with a custom muzzle brake to reduce recoil and redirect muzzle blast. A thread protector is included for those who choose to dispense with the muzzle brake. Empty weight is 9.2 pounds. The 550 Sonoran (SRP: $3,199) is built to be more of a long-range hunting rifle than a lighter-weight mountain rifle, but the empty weight is kept under 8 pounds through the use of the Manners composite stock and fluted barrels. Designed for rough use, the Sonoran is ferritic-nitrocarburized inside and out. That results in a Rockwell hardness of R72 while providing exceptional corrosion resistance. The stock is an olive drab Manners carbon-fiber composite, with all metalwork finished in flat black QPQ nitride. The Sonoran is available in 7mm Rem. Mag. and .300 Win. Mag. with 26-inch No. 4 contour fluted barrels. Empty weight is 7.8 pounds. It is also available in standard chamberings (.30/06 Sprg. and .270 Win.) with a 24-inch No. 3 contour fluted barrel. Empty weight is 7.6 pounds. The 500 Magnum H.E.T. II (SRP: $3,929) is a redesign of the High Energy Tactical precision long-range platform. A 550 Magnum action rides in a Manners tactical series stock with an adjustable cheekpiece and is covered with a molded-in
midnight camo finish. It is fed by Accuracy International detachable magazines that are secured in the chassis by custom Badger Ordnance bottom metal. A low-mount Picatinny rail provides the optics mounting platform. (800-955-4486; cz-usa.com)
FNH USA î For 2014, FNH announces the release of a new modern sporting rifle line. It consists of the FN 15 Carbine and the FN 15 Rifle. The FN 15 Carbine features a 16-inch chrome-lined barrel and is chambered for 5.56mm NATO. A black two-piece, ribbed, round polymer forearm and a six-position collapsible buttstock are standard and provide a length of pull from 9.9 to 13.2 inches, with an overall extended length of 35.2 inches. It uses a 1:7 twist barrel and an A2-style compensator and A2 fixed front sight. The rear sight is a removable A4-style carry handle sight. Empty weight is 6.9 pounds. The FN 15 Rifle features a 20-inch chrome-lined bore in 5.56mm NATO chambering (1:7 twist) with an A2 fixed front sight and compensator and an A4 removable rear sight. It also has a two-piece ribbed round polymer forearm, but this version sports a fixed A2-style buttstock. Length of pull is 10.6 inches. Overall length is 39.5 inches, and the empty weight is 7.9 pounds. (703-288-3500; fnhusa.com)

scope combo, and an interesting M1 Carbine model highlight Legacy Sport’s new rifle offerings this year. The new Howa/ Kryptek camo rifle features the venerable Howa bolt-action rifle with the HACT two-stage trigger, three-position safety, and a Hogue overmolded stock. Three Kryptek camo patterns will be available: Typhon, Highlander, and Raid. The new models will be available in Howa’s short-action, longaction, and magnum calibers. A No. 2 contour hunting barrel or a No. 6 contour heavy barrel are available as options. Scope packages featuring the Nikko Stirling Gameking scope are also available as full-camo-dip packages that include matching camo rings and one-piece scope bases. The new Howa/Zeiss Combo package features the Howa bolt-action rifle with HACT two-stage trigger, threeposition safety, and Hogue overmolded stock (the Hunter walnut stock is also available as an option), mated with a Zeiss Terra 3x 3–9x42 scope. It features a 1-inch tube, anti-reflection coating, the No. 20 Z-Plex second-focal-plane reticle, ¼MOA adjustments, hunting turrets, and a DNX one-piece base. The new Citadel M1 carbine could emerge as one of the true “fun guns” for 2014. Chambered for 9mm, it uses a blowback action and Beretta M92 steel magazines. Two magazines are supplied with each carbine, in either 10- or 17-round capacity. The front and rear sights are steel, as are the trigger and barrel band spring. (800-553-4229; legacysports.com)
MARLIN FIREARMS î In the process of revamping
production facilities, Marlin has added new barrel and receiver production equipment. For 2014, that means that some previously suspended product offerings will be making a welcome reappearance. According to Marlin, production efforts will now heavily focus on the 39A and 1894 product lines. Among the planned reintroductions are the Model 1895 CB in .45-70 Gov’t (SRP: $839.74), the Model 444 Marlin (SRP: $668.91), the Model 338 MX in .338 Marlin Express (SRP: $682.51), and the Model 338 MXLR in .338 Marlin Express (SRP: $900). In addition, a Marlin 336C Limited Edition is planned, and it is projected to be the first rifle of a multi-year high-end series. It features the Marlin horse-and-rider logo engraved on the left side of the receiver in 24-carat gold, with scrollwork on the right side. The trigger is gold-plated, and the stock is Grade B walnut. As a finishing touch, the words “Limited Edition” are stamped onto the barrel. (800-54-8892; marlinfirearms.com)
MOSSBERG î Significant additions to Mossberg’s MVP Patrol boltaction line and a couple of fun rimfires in the new Duck Commander series comprise Mossberg’s new rifle products for 2014. The basic MVP Patrol is a bolt-action chambered for 5.56mm NATO and features a 16.25-inch 1:9 twist medium bull barrel. It is available as a straight barrel or threaded for a supplied A2-style flash suppressor. Fed from a detachable magazine, a 10-round magazine is supplied but the gun also accepts standard MSR-
style magazines. A Picatinny rail rides atop the receiver, and there is an adjustable rear sight with a fiber-optic front. The LBA trigger is user-adjustable for pull weights of 2 to 7 pounds. The synthetic stock is finished in flat black. Added to that basic MVP Patrol 5.56mm line is the new Model 27709, which is available in a textured tan stock instead of matte black. This version includes the A2 flash suppressor. The big news, however, is the addition of the 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. and the .300 ACC Blackout to the MVP line. Offering all of the standard specifications of the MVP line (synthetic stock, 16.25-inch barrel, A2-style flash suppressor, 10-round magazine), the new Model 27718 is chambered for .300 ACC Blackout. It has a 1:7twist barrel fitted with the A2 flash hider and a textured blackmatte stock. The new Model 27738 is chambered for 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. It features a 1:10-twist barrel with a fitted A2 flash suppressor and a textured black stock. The new Model 27742 is the same gun, but with a textured tan stock. The new Model 27739 is the Patrol Scoped Combo in 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. It differs from the standard MVP Patrol in that the stock features a neoprene comb-raising kit to achieve the proper comb height for use with the mounted 3–9x32mm scope with a lighted reticle. All of the new .30-caliber models are supplied with 10-round magazines, but they accept M1A/M14- and AR-10-style magazines that allow a capacity increase. The Mossberg FLEX TLS system allows a wide range of interchangeability within stock components, letting shooters

It features a satin-finished American walnut stock with a 24-inch stainless-steel fluted barrel. The trigger mechanism is the X-Mark Pro externally adjustable trigger that is factory-set at 3.5 pounds. “Limited” is marked on the left side of the receiver,
and it wears a 50th anniversary commemorative floor plate. SRP: $1,225.95. The Model SPS bolt-action adds a .260 Rem. chambering to its line with the addition of a black synthetic–stock model featuring a 24-inch barrel for increased velocity and a new 1:8 twist designed to more effectively stabilize the 140-grain bullet (considered by many experts to be the most effective medium-game projectile in this caliber). This rifle features the X-Mark Pro externally adjustable trigger. Existing .260 Rem. chamberings in the Model Seven CDL and Synthetic rifles will now use the 1:8 twist rate. RUGER î New from Ruger this year is the SR-762 autoloading rifle ($2,195). The SR-762 retains the features of the SR-556, but offers the downrange power of the 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. cartridge. The rifle sports Ruger’s patented chrome-plated two-stage piston-operating action that features a chrome-plated bolt and chrome-plated one-piece bolt carrier with an oversize, radiused rear bearing surface. A four-position chromeplated gas regulator can be adjusted to the load pressure for optimum reliability, or it can completely close for manual operation when training or using a suppressor. A heavy contour 16.12-inch chrome-lined barrel is coldhammer-forged from mil-spec 41V45 chrome-moly vandium
steel with a 1:10 RH twist; it is fluted to reduce weight. It sports an SR-556/Mini-14 style flash suppressor that is mounted with a ⅝-24 thread. The handguard is Ruger’s smooth-sided Lightweight Adjustable model. The flattop receiver features a mil-spec 1913 Picatinny rail at the 12 o’clock position that extends the fulllength of the handguard. It is drilled and tapped for additional rails at the 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and 9 o’clock positions to provide ample space for lights, lasers, and other accessories. Two rail sections are included. Riding atop the 12 o’clock rail are folding back-up iron sights with a windage-adjustable rear and elevation-adjustable front. The six-position, black synthetic M4-style buttstock is mounted on a mil-spec-diameter tube and allows a length of pull from 11.50 to 14.75 inches. Overall length is 34.75 to 38 inches. A Hogue Monogrip pistol grip is standard. It weighs 8.6 pounds empty, and all metalwork is manganese phosphate/hard-coat anodized. The gun ships with three 20-round MAGPUL PMAG magazines, a soft-sided case, and three finger-grooved rail covers. On the rimfire side, the big news is the introduction of the Ruger American Rimfire series. This new series of boltaction rifles combines features from the centerfire Ruger American line with a number of innovations from Ruger's rimfire line. The new rimfire series consists of four models (SRP: $320). The full-sized model (.22LR and .22WMR) has a 22-inch barrel. Length of pull is 13.75 inches. The compact version (also in .22LR and .22WMR) has an 18-inch barrel. Length of pull is
12.5 inches. All models feature a composite stock with front and rear sling swivels. Models chambered for the .22LR feature the detachable, flush-mounted 10/22 BX-1 rotary magazine and accept all 10/22 rifle magazines, including the BX-25 and BX-25x2 magazines. Those models chambered for the .22 WMR use the detachable JMX-1 nineround magazines. The 10/22 extended-magazine release allows for smooth magazine removal. (203-259-7843; ruger.com)
Ruger The SR-762 is based on the design of the SR-556, but is refitted for the 7.62 NATO/.308 Win. cartridge. Meanwhile, the new Ruger American Rimfire series shown here combines features from the Ruger’s centerfire American line with a variety of innovations from its rimfire offerings.
SIG SAUER î Two new modern sporting rifles using a gas-piston operating system enter the SIG Sauer line this year. The SIG516 Carbon Fiber (SRP: $2,504) is chambered for 5.56mm NATO. It features a 7075-T6 aircraft-grade upper and lower receiver with a hard-coat anodized finish, and a 16-inch 1:7twist six-groove chrome-lined barrel. The gas-operating system is a four-position adjustable short-stroke, advanced push-rod system with a rotating bolt. The action is mated to an A1 carbon-fiber stock with an extended 12-inch freefloat carbon-fiber handguard. The match-grade two-stage trigger has a final break of 4.5 pounds. This flattop rifle has a Picatinny rail upper receiver that is equipped with flip-up adjustable iron sights and plenty of room to mount optics. Overall length is 35.1 inches, and the empty weight is 7 pounds. The rifle accepts all MSR-type magazines. The new SIG556xi Russian (SRP: $1,599) is chambered for the 7.62x39mm. It features a 16-inch chrome-lined barrel

î The big news from Benelli this year is the rollout of the new Ethos 12-gauge recoiloperated semi-auto shotgun. According to Benelli, the Ethos is the next generation of the Inertia Driven System, and it will reliably handle 12-gauge loads as light as ⅞-ounce target loads right on up to the stoutest 3-inch magnum shells. Built on a new platform, the Ethos is the culmination of Benelli’s latest innovations and refinements. The new design includes a patented easy-locking system, which features a detent mechanism that has been added to the bolt body that guarantees the rotating bolt will positively lock up even if it is eased forward without force. A new two-part bolt carrier latch, beveled loading port, and redesigned carrier provide fast and positive shell feeding. An enlarged bolt release and improved cartridge drop lever allow easy operation, even if the shooter is wearing gloves. Ethos stocks are cut from figured AA-Grade European walnut and incorporate Benelli’s patented Progressive Comfort recoil-reduction system to reduce felt recoil and muzzle climb. The barrel sports interchangeable carbonfiber ribs that reduce weight and are engineered for quick replacement. Interchangeable fiber-optic bars in the front
sight are supplied in red, green, and yellow, allowing for quick changes in order to match lighting or background conditions. The receiver, available in either a black anodized or engraved nickel-plated finish, is fitted to a blued barrel. SRP: $1,999, black anodized receiver; $2,199, engraved nickel-plated receiver. BROWNING î The Browning High Grade program moves into its second year with a pair of full-sideplate Citori over/unders. The extended side plates create a larger canvas that is perfect for additional embellishment by highly skilled engravers. Sharply checkered, finely finished high-grade wood is hand-fit to the colored, casehardened receiver. A Grade III and Grade VI 12-gauge model will be offered, each with a 28-inch ventilated top rib barrel. A combined total of up to 500 of these High Grade shotguns will be produced. The new Grade III Citori High Grade receiver features high-relief scroll engraving with a colored, case-hardened finish. The stock and forearm feature Grade III/IV walnut in a gloss finish and 22-lpi cut checkering. An ABS Elite case is included with the Grade III Citori. SRP: $4,669.99.

CZ-USA î New models in CZ’s pumpaction, semi-auto, and over/ under line become the additions to CZ’s new smoothbore offerings this year. Leading the pump-action introductions is the 612 Field (SRP: $389). It is designed as a moderately
priced pump-action shotgun that can handle most smoothbore chores. Chambered for 12-gauge 3-inch shells, it can also handle 2¾-inch loads. It features a walnut stock and a 28-inch barrel and is threaded for interchangeable choke tubes (IC, M, and F are included). The metalwork is finished in satin chrome. The 620 Youth (SRP: $349) pump-action 20-gauge is chambered for 3-inch shells, but also handles 2¾-inch loads. It features a synthetic stock with a reduced 12¾-inch length of pull to appeal to smallerframed shooters, and a 24-inch barrel. The barrel is threaded for interchangeable choke tubes (IC, M, and F), which are included with the gun.
The 620 Big Game (SRP: $399) is a 20-gauge pumpaction, a synthetic-stocked smoothbore designed for use with slugs. Threaded for interchangeable chokes, the 22-inch barrel is equipped with an extended rifled choke tube to improve accuracy with Fosterstyle slugs. A Weaver-style cantilever rail rides atop the barrel to allow the mounting of a scope or red-dot sight. The 612 Home Defense (SRP: $409) is a no-frills 12-gauge pump-action with a synthetic stock. It features an 18.5-inch barrel with a fixedcylinder choke and a prominent blade front sight. In addition, a 26-inch field barrel with a vent-rib barrel is included to make it a more versatile gun.
The 26-inch barrel is threaded for interchangeable choke tubes, and accepts all CZ choke tubes. The shotgun comes with a Modified choke. CZ’s new semi-auto shotguns include a number of very useful models. The 712 Practical (SRP: $699) is the first CZ shotgun designed specifically for the increasingly popular 3-Gun games. Chambered for 12-gauge shells, it features a 22-inch barrel threaded for CZ choke tubes. Five flush-mounted choke tubes are included. An ATI fluted magazine extension provides a 9+1 capacity; it extends slightly past the barrel to help protect the muzzle and flush chokes when firing from barricade positions. able model that is installed on a commercial-spec tube that allows aftermarket customization. The 720 ALS (SRP: $599) is a 20-gauge semi-auto with a 24-inch barrel fitted with the fully adjustable ATI Akita buttstock. This allows shooters to change the length of pull from 12 to 14 inches with the push of a button. It also allows three different comb heights via easy screw adjustments, meaning the 720 ALS can be fitted to a number of shooters. The Sporter Standard Grade Adjustable Rib (SRP: $3,122) is an over/under designed to allow shooters to adjust their point of impact from a flatshooting gun for Sporting Clays and Skeet to a higher pattern for Trap. Chambered in 12 gauge, and available with a 30- or 32-inch barrel, it is based upon CZ’s Standard Grade Sporter, but equipped with Moneymaker Guncraft’s adjustable rib and a buttstock with a four-way adjustable parallel comb. The combination allows discriminating shooters to alter the point of impact to suit any clay target game. It is supplied with a set of six interchangeable Kick’s Tom Mack stainless-steel choke tubes. MOSSBERG î The Mossberg 930 field semi-auto shotgun line expands this year with two new 12-gauge/3-inch HighPerformance models featuring an extended magazine tube that offers a 12+1 capacity. For those times when 13 shells might not be appropriate, a five-round magazine tube is also included with each. Model 85123 features a
stock finished in Kryptek Yeti camo, while Model 85122 is in plain matte black. Both models feature a synthetic stock with a 28-inch vent-rib barrel and a fiber-optic front sight threaded for Accu-Set choke tubes. A forward barrel clamp is supplied for the extended 12-shot magazine tube. Three new models featuring Kryptek’s distinctive Typhon camo pattern on synthetic stocks enter Mossberg’s Competition and Tactical lines in 2014. The 930 JM Pro Series-10 Shot (85133) is built on the 930 semi-auto action and chambered for 12-gauge 3-inch shells. The 24-inch barrel is chambered for Accu-Set choke tubes, features a matte blue finish, and sports a fiberoptic front sight. An extended magazine tube with a stabilizing barrel clamp provides a 10-round capacity with 2¾-inch shells. The synthetic stock features Mossberg’s adjustable stock-drop spacer system. The 930 SPX Pistol Grip-8 Shot (85373) is built on the 930 12-gauge/3-inch semi-auto action with an extended magazine tube to provide an 8-round capacity with 2¾-inch shells. The 18.5-inch barrel is a fixed-cylinder choke and sports a Picatinny rail on the upper receiver. It is supplied with an adjustable ghost-ring rear sight and a fiber-optic front sight enclosed in protective wings. The full-length buttstock has a finger-groove pistol grip. The 590A1-6 Shot (51522) is built on Mossberg’s 590 pump action in 12-gauge/3-inch chambering. Two new Mossberg 500 Tactical Rail models enter the line this year with an innovative Center Mass LaserLyte laser designed specifically for tactical shotguns. The Center Mass laser displays a ring of red dots surrounding a center aiming dot. The outer ring of dots expands at the rate of 1
inch per yard—approximating the spread of shotgun loads at close range—while the center aiming dot remains constant in the pattern center. This “spreader pattern” laser provides quick and positive target acquisition while showing a visible reference relating to the pattern spread at any range.
The Center Mass laser is mounted on the bottom rail of two new 500 Tactical TriRail 12-gauge/3-inch 500 series pump-actions, the 500 Persuader Tactical Tri-Rail (50599) and the 500 Cruiser Tactical Tri-Rail (50600). Each offers a full-length bottom rail on the forearm and two small-
er side rails to allow the use of lights. The 500 Persuader is a full-stocked gun in black synthetic with a 20-inch Cylinder bore barrel sporting a bead front sight and an 8-round capacity. The 500 Cruiser features a compact black synthetic pistol-grip-only stock with a 18.5-inch barrel

new base model guns for field use and personal defense. Mossberg will link up with the Robertson clan, who have become a national phenomenon with their top-rated TV series, Duck Dynasty. The result is the Duck Commander series of shotguns. The list is extensive, but all feature Realtree’s
new Max-5 camo pattern on a synthetic stock and the Duck Commander logo engraved on the stock or receiver. The Mossberg International SA-20 Field is a semi-auto shotgun chambered for 20-gauge/3-inch shells. It has a five-round capacity and a synthetic stock. The 26-inch

The SX3 Long Beard features a Briley choke tube, three interchangeable butt pads and comb pieces, and a TruGlo front sight.
Red Label over/under shotgun has been an American classic for years. The gun was discontinued in 2011, but it returns this year in a redesigned format that features refined inner workings, a new center-ofgravity balance point, and reduced recoil. The new Ruger Red Label (SRP: $1,399) is available in 12-gauge (it’s chambered for 3-inch shells but is able to handle all 2¾-inch shells) and can be had with a 26-, 28-, or 30-inch barrel. All barrels now feature 2-inch lengthened forcing cones and maximum backboring to produce tighter patterns and reduce recoil. The Red Label’s traditional lowprofile receiver is enhanced with a new stainless-steel top lever. The Red Label sports an American walnut stock with a 1.5-inch drop at comb and a 2.5-inch drop at heel, with a 14.5-inch length of pull. A Pachmayr butt pad helps reduce felt recoil. The finely polished stainless-steel receiver mates with blue steel barrels that are topped with a quarter-inch dovetailed ventilated rib and a front bead sight. The barrels are threaded for interchangable choke tubes, and five Briley steelshot-compatible choke tubes (two Skeet, and one each of IC, M, and F) are included, as is a Briley choke-tube wrench to help with installation. The action incorporates a single selective trigger that allows the shooter to fire a second shot without recocking. It also features rebounding hammers for easier action opening. An automatic twoposition top tang safety/barrel selector switch allows quick barrel selection and positive
visibility. Completeing the package, each Red Label ships with a custom-molded semisoft case and a safety lock.

size polymer 9mm semi-auto pistol offering 19+1 capacity with a flush-fitting magazine in a standard service-size pistol. Featuring the versatile Omega DA/SA trigger system, the gun is shipped with decocker levers installed, but can be converted to a manual safety-system pistol with the included parts and instructions. The CZ P-09 also includes interchangeable backstraps (small, medium, and large) that allows the shooter to customize the pistol’s grip to their hand size for the optimal trigger-finger positioning. An integral Picatinny 1913 rail on the dust cover allows the use of lights or add-on lasers.
The P-09 Suppressor-Ready (SRP: $577) is available in 9mm. It has low sights and an extended muzzle that is threaded with ½-28 threads to accept a variety of aftermarket suppressors. The P-09 Flat Dark Earth (SRP: $596) features a flat dark earth frame coupled with tritium three-dot night sights. The CZ P-07 is the updated version of the compact CZ 75 P-07 Duty. The debut of the full-size P-09 last year brought refined lines and interchangeable backstraps to the CZ Omega polymer pistol line, and this year the P-07 follows suit. the same ability to shift from a decocker to a manual safety in mere minutes and with simple tools. It features a new nitrate slide finish and a snag-free hammer. The entire pistol has been dehorned to remove any sharp edges to make it comfortable for all-day carry. Interchangeable backstraps (small, medium, and large) allow shooters to fit the gun to their hand for the proper trigger reach, and a newly designed trigger shape improves shooter control and comfort. A 1913 dust cover rail, metal three-dot sights, front and rear cocking serrations, and a beefed-up magazine spring complete the upgrades. The new CZ 75 B Omega (SRP: $544) features a simpler and more robust version of the CZ-75 trigger system. The interlocking design of the new trigger system allows for easier detail stripping without the need for tools. The trigger parts themselves are made
from more durable materials for enhanced service life. Under the Dan Wesson banner, 2014 will see a new highend 9mm competition pistol as well as a compact-carry model. Serious action-pistol competitors get a new high-capacity double-stackmagazine 9mm 1911 that offers 21+1 rounds on tap with the DW Elite Series Chaos (SRP: $3,829). Handbuilt on a double-stack frame, the Chaos features a black matte finish, fiber-optic sights with a fully adjustable rear sight, front and rear cocking serrations, a 1913 Picatinny rail, and a match-tuned trigger. The DW Guardian (SRP: $1,558) is a Commander-size 1911 with an anodized-aluminum bobtail frame and mainspring housing, black Duty finish, tritium night sights, and a Commander-length steel slide. While this was already available in 9mm and .45 ACP, 2014 sees the introduction of a chamber-

assembly. Overall length is 8.90 inches. Height is 5.47 inches with the magazine inserted. That’s a full-size pistol. But, for those who want something smaller, the new Glock 42 .380 ACP should do the job. It’s the smallest pistol Glock has ever made. This ultra-compact .380 pistol weighs in at 12.35 ounces empty. Its overall length is 5.94 inches; barrel length is 3.25 inches. It features the standard 5.62-pound trigger module, polymer sights, and a six-round magazine capacity. (770-432-1202; glock.com)

The first value-priced full-frame firearm offerings from Kahr, the new CT4043 (.40 S&W) and the CT4543 (.45 ACP) feature a polymer frame with a stainlesssteel slide and white bar-dot sight configuration. The CT4043 has a 4-inch barrel. Overall length is 6.5 inches; height is 5.13 inches. The slide width is slightly less than 1 inch and it weighs 21.8 ounces with the magazine, making it very slim, lightweight, and perfect for concealed carry. The CT4543 has a barrel length of 4.04 inches. Overall length is 6.57 inches, and the height is 5.25 inches. Slide width is 1.01 inches, and the gun weighs 23.7 ounces with the magazine. Both models feature a 7+1 capacity and ship with one 7-round stainless-steel magazine. SRP: $499. (508-7953919; kahr.com)
MAGNUM RESEARCH î For the last three years, Magnum Research has offered the classic 1911 Gov’t model .45 ACP in a full-size 5-inch
model and in a Commanderlength version. For 2014, the company will now expand that line with a 3-inch ultra-compact model—the Undercover (model DE1911U). SRP: $946. The Undercover is chambered for .45 ACP and features a 3-inch bull barrel with an 11-degree muzzle crown. It uses the Series 70 operating action that is much admired by 1911 aficionados. Built on an ultralight frame constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, it incorporates a 4140 high-carbon-steel slide. The sights are a fully adjustable (for windage and elevation) rear sight and a ramp front sight. Standard features include a checkered front strap and mainspring housing, double-diamond checkered wood-grip panels secured with stainless-steel hex screws, a skeletonized combat-style hammer, an aluminum trigger, and a high-rise beavertail safety. The Undercover has a 6+1 magazine capacity and is shipped with two 6-round magazines. (508-635-4273; magnumresearch.com)
MOSSBERG î The International 715P semi-auto pistol is a syntheticstocked MSR tactical-style platform, with no buttstock and just a pistol grip, but it is chambered for .22LR with a 6-inch 1:16-inch-twist barrel that sports an A2-style flash hider. Feeding from a detachable magazine, standard features include an upper Picatinny rail with a short, ventilated quad rail on the forearm. Railmounted, removable, and adjustable iron sights are standard on all models. Empty weight is 3 pounds with iron sights, 3.5 pounds with the UTG 1x30mm red-dot sight. The 715P will be available in five models for 2014. The Model 37235 is the basic iron-sighted pistol with a 25-round magazine (a magazine loader is included). The Model 37236 is the same pistol, but with a 10-round magazine (to comply with the regulations in certain states) that has the same profile as the 25-round magazine. The Model 37251 is the base gun with a 25-round magazine. Additional features include
a UTG 1x30mm electronic reddot sight that sits high enough above the iron sights to overlook them. The UTG sight is adjustable for windage and elevation and allows the shooter to choose between red or green illumination. The Model 37252 is the UTG-equipped pistol, identical to the 37251, but with the state-mandated 10-round magazine. The above four pistols are finished in a black matte. (800-363-3555; mossberg.com)

Overall length is 7.1 inches and width is 1.5 inches. Empty weight is 32 ounces. Siglite Night Sights are standard, and this model does not sport an accessory rail. The MK-25 Desert shares all the features of the M11-A1 Desert except that it uses a 4.4inch barrel, weighs 34.4 ounces, and has a 1913 rail on the dust cover. SRP: $1,213. Fans of the classic 1911 have not been ignored this year, as SIG introduces a new stainlesssteel model in full and Commander sizes. The 1911 Railed-Nickel (SRP: $1,185) is a full-size 5-inch-barrel singleaction semi-auto built on a stainless-steel frame. The frame and stainless-steel slide are finished in Nickel PVD. It features a 1913 rail, beavertail grip safety, steel mag well, custom Brown Vector grip panels, and low-profile night sights.
Chambered for .45 ACP, the magazine capacity is 8 rounds. Empty weight is 41.6 ounces. Overall width is 1.4 inches, the length is 8.7 inches, and the height is 5.5 inches. SIG states the single-action trigger pull breaks at 5 pounds. The 1911 Railed-Nickel compact (1911CO-45-NI) shares all of the features of the full-size model except it is a Commander-size gun with a 4.2-inch barrel. It uses sevenround magazines and does not have a rail on the dust cover. Empty weight is 35.5 ounces, the length is 7.7 inches, height is 4.8 inches, and the overall width is 1.4 inches. SRP: $1,185. TAURUS î A new compact DA concealed-carry small-framed revolver enters Taurus’ product line this year. The View, named for its distinctive translucent polycarbonate right side plate that reveals the internal
action mechanism, is a fiveshot DA revolver based upon the Model 85 and chambered for .38 Special. The aluminum frame, 1.41-inch titanium barrel with a steel liner, and titanium cylinder result in an empty weight of 9 ounces. A new grip shape and rigid polymer grip is designed to sit back in the palm and reduce muzzle flip. Sights are a fixed rear and fixed serrated ramp front. It includes a transfer bar safety and the Taurus Security System. SRP: $599. (800-3273776; taurususa.com)
WALTHER ARMS î For 2014 Walther expands its PPQ product line with the addition of a 5-inch centerfire model and a .22LR that will be available in three SKU variations. The PPQ M2 5-Inch (SRP: $749) is available in a 15-round capacity in 9mm and an 11-round capacity in .40 S&W. It features a 5-inch barrel with the PPQ Quick Defense Trigger that operates
from a pre-cocked position and provides a constant 5.6pound trigger pull weight. Finished in a matte black, the overall length is 8.1 inches, and it has an empty weight of 23 ounces. Each PPQ M2 is supplied with three interchangeable backstraps to allow a shooter to custom-fit the pistol to the hand. An ambidextrous slide stop, which is extended for easy operation with gloved hands, and a reversible magazine-release button make the PPQ M2 suitable for right- or left-handed shooters. All PPQ M-series pistols are designed with three automatic safeties and are equipped with metal three-dot pattern sights. The new rimfire version is the PPQ M2 .22LR. It utilizes a blowback action, has a 12-round magazine capacity, and boasts a 4.85-pound trigger-pull weight. A firing-pin block and trigger safety and loaded-chamber indicator are standard. The polymer-frame handgun features an ambidextrous magazine-release button and slide-stop lever. The slide is anodized aluminum, and a Picatinny rail is incorporated into the dust cover. It will be available in a pair of 4-inch barrel models (weighing 19 ounces empty with an overall length of 7.1 inches). They both feature a polymer front sight with a metal rear that is adjustable for windage and elevation. The PPQ Tactical version in the 4-inch-barrel length features a threaded barrel for the installation of a suppressor. A 5-inch Target Model has a high-visibility fiber-optic front sight, in addition to the fully adjustable rear sight. SRP: $429 to $469. (479-242-8500; waltherarms.com)

The Game Changer
Winchester’s new long-range turkey load can really reach out there
W
inchester Long Beard XR is a game changer. In a literal sense, these shells change game—turkeys, specifically—from live to dead, and at very long ranges. But it’s also going to change the turkey ammo game. No longer will hunters have to choose between the economy of lead and the highpriced performance of premium tungsten-iron. Long Beard’s unique technology produces a lead load that costs only a little more than standard lead, but patterns pellet for pellet with expensive premium loads.
A special Shot Lok epoxy keeps pellets in Winchester’s new Long Beard loads round and flying straight.
The high price of raw tungsten continues to drive the price of tungsten-iron shot to the point where it costs up to $5 a shell. Even turkey hunters, who shoot only a few times a year, balk at those prices, but they love the performance. Long Beard is hitting the market at just the right time. It’s long been known that ground-plastic buffer—called “grex”—improves patterns by protecting soft lead pellets from deformation when a shell ignites and the pellets go from 0 to 900 mph in an instant. With Long Beard, Winchester has come up with a better buffer. All the copper-plated lead pellets in each shell are encased in a material called “Shot Lok” that looks like epoxy. During the loading process, the shotcup is partly filled with the resin, then the pellets are dropped into it. The pellets are stuck
together in one cylindrical piece. When the shell is fired, the epoxy shatters, essentially turning to dust, but it does a much more effective job of protecting the shot than does a traditional ground buffer. As a result, the pellets stay round. Round pellets fly straighter than deformed ones do, and they retain velocity better, too. Long Beard absolutely works. In my gun, an 870 with a Rob Roberts .665 choke, Long Beard outpatterned both Winchester’s excellent High Velocity turkey loads and Hevi-13. It shot patterns at 50 yards that would reliably kill a turkey and far outperformed regular lead. I shot Long Beard into phone books to test penetration and was very impressed, not just with its performance, but with the roundness of the pellets I recovered from the
pages, which speaks to how well the Shot Lok does its job of protecting pellets. Incidentally, 20-yard patterns with Long Beard weren’t that much tighter than ordinary turkey load patterns, and that’s a plus, because turkey loads are already easy enough to miss with at close ranges. Long Beard is available in 3- and 3½-inch 12-gauge loads of Nos. 4, 5, and 6 shot. I believe it will be the big hit of the spring. If my prediction is correct and hunters love Long Beard, you can expect 20-gauge Long Beard turkey loads next year and will perhaps see this technology cross over into buckshot or long-range pheasant loads. For now, Long Beard comes only in 12-gauge turkey loads, and you’ll want to grab some this year. People will be asking for it. (618258-3358; winchester.org)
Selling Tips
Shoot some patterns with Long Beard and other ammo and keep them on hand to show what it can do. Some hunters may argue that at 1,200 fps, Long Beard isn’t fast enough. That’s steel-shot thinking. Denser lead pellets retain velocity well and don’t need the extra speed.
Long Beard presents you with a chance to upsell. It can kill turkeys at 50 plus yards, but your customers still need to be able to make the shot. Explain how a scope or red dot helps put those tight patterns on target, at both long and short ranges.

CABarnwood Arms, Ripon
Resting between Stockton and Modesto in central Northern California, this home-defense and hunting store just opened seven shooting lanes. Demand for the Smith & Wesson Shield is exceptional, and deliveries are just starting to arrive. Glocks have experienced a resurgence and are selling better than they were earlier in the year, mostly in .40. “Our range continues to be an important part of our sales. It’s simple. We properly fit a new shooter, take them on the range, and we close the sale,” says range manager Selise Perez. Other brisk sellers include good traffic on MSRs, which average four per week. SIG M400s hold the clear lead. Bolt-action sales include Remington Varmint grade 700s,

mostly in .223 and .22-250.
Gun Shop, ORSM Eugene
Just a block from the Willamette River, this tightly packed store averages 500 firearms in stock most of the year. Overall, sales finished down from 2012, with a significant reduction in handgun sales. “Our numbers are off, and we attribute it to a difficult year getting product in the door,” says owner Marvin Loy. Currently, the top sellers are Glocks and Smith M&Ps, mostly in 9mm and .40. MSRs are slowly picking up, turning about one a week, mostly models from DPMS. Home-defense shotguns are at the highest numbers in months. Remington 870s lead the pack, followed by a few Winchester 1300 Defenders. Ammo inventories are low; the store is completely out of .22s.

Cabin Fever MN Sporting Goods, Victoria
This 6,000-square-foot storefront stocks bait, tackle, and more than 600 firearms. “We’ve really seen a decline in .22 rifle and pistol sales. Customers say, ‘Why should we purchase a gun if we can’t get ammo?’” says owner Jeff Byrne. Sales of Tikkas are spilling over into varmint season. Small numbers of long-barreled MSRs are attracting more attention, from Stag and Bushmaster. New slug shotguns from Savage continue to move after the holidays. Handguns are picking up from an already strong holiday season, with concealed-carry topping the list. Smith Shields and Springfield XDs are doing exceptionally well, and Glock is seeing an increase over last year.
Little Joe’s KS Pawn & Gun East, Kansas City
Keeping about 200 guns in stock, this family-run pawn and gun shop specializes in used rifles and handguns. Glocks and Smith Shields are moving quickly; used handguns are selling even better than they were last year. Traditional hunting rifles are still keeping the register warm. But with deer season over, customers have migrated to Remington 700 Varmint Specials and a few .243 BDLs. “Ammo stocks are frustrating us, and the lack of .22 really hurt our holiday sales,” says manager Sean Boyd.

Gun WAWelcher’s Shop, Tacoma
Family-owned since 1958, this shop stocks more than 500 firearms, selling a mix of home defense and hunting supplies. Tikka T3s are still selling, along with a few Browning X-Bolts and Weatherby Vanguard Series IIs, mostly in .270 and .308. MSRs have picked up, moving about three to four units a week, with a mix of Rock Rivers and SIG 516s. Handgun sales are brisk, with Glocks gaining steam due to improved availability. “In 2014, we believe handgun deliveries will improve, and we hope that ammo will smooth out,” says owner Bryan Welcher. Ammo stocks are generally low, but improving slightly— except for .22. Shotguns are tapering off, though this store reported good sales for Benelli Super Black Eagles and M2s in December.
guns in inventory and reports more than a 50 percent increase in total sales from this time last year. Pistols hold the high ground, with all things 1911 pulling in the most profit and turns. High-end pistols from Ed Brown and Nighthawk Custom deliver the highest profits, but Kimbers, SIGs, and Springfield 1911s pull the best numbers. “Our 1911 sales are through the roof. Since we have one of the best inventories in the country, we can get what customers are looking for,” says VP John Dawson. Rifle sales are even with last year. However, SIG 516 MSRs have sold well, followed by a few ArmaLites. Custom uppers and lowers is a category that continues to grow. Ammo stocks are less than ideal; poor inventories of .22 ammo are causing rimfire rifles and pistol sales to stall.

Woods and NJL&H Water, Wall
This small-town south New Jersey fishing, hunting, and clothing dealer stocks more than 400 guns in 500 square feet. Handgun sales are steady: SIG is in the lead, with P222s, P226s, and 1911s all getting high turns. “Selling in New Jersey requires planning on our part. Customers have to apply for a permit, and then after waiting months, must make that purchase within weeks or the permit expires. It’s critical that we work with companies that produce inventory—and SIG ships,” says general manager Tim Carey. Benelli Super Black Eagles and Browning A5s are still crossing the counter. MSRs have slowed to two a week, with Smith M&Ps in the top spot. Rimfire ammo stocks are good at last, but stocks of 9mm, .40, and .30/30 are in poor shape.
South
Autrey’s GA Armory, Fayetteville
This tactical homedefense retailer hosts 12 indoor rifle and pistol shooting lanes. Although overall sales for the last quarter were down, the handgun counter has been busy throughout the holidays. Top sellers included Glock, M&Ps in 9mm and .40, and nearly any kind of J-Frame Smith. MSRs turn more than six per week, notably down from this time last year. “The MSR trend has really slowed. It’s almost as if everyone binged on them, and now they have an MSR hangover,” says manager Mark Poole. Customers are even trading them in for handguns. Ammo stocks have slightly improved, but .22 ammo is still in poor shape and hurting sales of .22 handguns. Youth sales for Henry Rifles, a staple for the holidays,
Gun Barn, PAEnck’s Newmanstown
Located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, just 24 miles from Cabela’s, the store keeps a carefully chosen inventory that its competitors do not. Handgun sales are good to excellent, with Rugers turning within a few days. Cowboy Action has exploded here, and Ruger Vaqueros top the list. Ammo continues to aggravate, with shortages through deer season. “It killed me to have only marginal stocks of the most basic calibers, like .270, .30/30, and even .308. My customers were not happy,” says owner Bob Enck. MSR sales have slowed, turning one a week. Here, DPMS and Smith M&Ps see the most attention. Although MSRs are down, there’ve been a few recent orders for highend Lancer Rifles.
were severely off this season.
Gun TXMcClelland Shop, Dallas
Family-owned since 1972, this 8,000-square-foot retailer averages 1,000 guns in inventory and employs five gunsmiths. Handguns are the fast movers for January, with the highest numbers being posted from Springfield 1911s and Glocks. “We would love to see some Smith Shields and few others concealedcarry guns that are back-ordered. That said, deliveries are far better than they were just a year ago,” says countersalesman Chris Felts. Ammo inventory is improving at the upper price points, but .22 is still difficult to get. MSRs are moving at a rate of two to three a week, predominately Bushmaster and Colt. Custom-shop MSRs continue to see high demand.
Interlaken NY Guns & Ammo, Interlaken
This retailer has an active home-defense and hunting firearms business. Handgun sales are steady, with 9mm and .40 Glocks on top. Smith J-Frames and Kahr CM9s are also turning good numbers. In ammo, the shop is struggling to stock .22 and .30/30. MSRs are doing well, and local corrections and police officers have been buying Colts. “It’s really been a struggle trying to figure out what is legal and what’s not,” says owner Bill McGuire on the state’s new compliance law. Bolt-action rifles have surged, with the .243-caliber Savage Axis getting notable sales for varmint season. Gift certificate redemptions have created a run on accessories, with belts and holsters seeing the highest turns of the season.
Mitchell’s TN Country Store, Jackson
Located in the western third of the state, this classic rural general store sells groceries, hardware, and sporting goods, and has an average of 100 guns in stock at any one time. Handgun sales remain consistent, with Glock 19s holding the high ground. This shop also turned several 1911s from Rock Island Armory. “I’ve been waiting for some guns from Ruger and J-Frame Smiths for months,” says owner Roy Mitchell. He’s frustrated by the lack of .22 ammo, and notes that it has negatively impacted Christmas gift sales, particularly .22 long guns for younger shooters. Sporting long gun sales had the slowest season in the store’s history. To date, Rock Rivers are still turning one every other week.

Outdoor Technology
Deer camp (or duck camp) is all about getting away from it all, but more and more these days hunters don’t want to completely disconnect from the outside world. That’s especially true if you happen to be hunting and don’t wish to miss the BIg Game—whatever it may be. That’s where Outdoor Technology comes in, with a pair of ingenious dust- and water-resistant Bluetooth-enabled wireless speakers. The Turtle Shell (left) and Buckshot (right) both use lithium-ion rechargeable batteries that will give you about 16 hours of play time on a single charge. They’re both rugged enough to go in a hunting pack (and in the case of the smaller Buckshot, a shirt pocket). If work intrudes, you can even use the speakers to set up a conference call. But most important, you can stream radio coverage of that can’t-miss game and share it with campmates around the fire. SRP: $129.99, Turtle Shell; $49.99, Buck Shot.
