So are you ready for Summer? If you haven’t really haven’t had time to plan for it, but can’t help noticing that it’s getting a lot warmer then you will bae very interested in this month’s issue of SOCIETY. For the fashion conscious woman who hasn’t yet made her mind up about tahis year’s beachwear we have the latest and – we think – best yet collection from Virginia Macari. This woman is such a perfectionist that she and her team spent ages scouting for the best location in which to stage the photoshoot for this collection, eventually finding a secret beach in Lagos, Portugal which offered everything that was needed. We think the results more than justify the amount of care that Virginia and her team took to present her latest creations in their natural habitat! Turn to Page 52 and have a look at the results of all their hard work – we think that you’ll agree that it was worth it.

Inspired by Dolce & Gabbana’s 2015 ready-to-wear Spanish collection, the Andalusian Tea has been designed to be as good to look at as it is to eat. You can enjoy tea from 4pm to 7pm, but booking at least 24 hours in advance is recommended, as tables have been filling up fast.

Last month we looked at the life and career of Hollywood director, Ridley Scott and we were fascinated to hear that his next project is likely to be a biopic of Mexican drug baron and head of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. Scott was recently spotted scouting for locations in Málaga, so there is a considerable amount of anticipation both locally and internationally. With the popularity of the Netflix series Narcos, this biopic is bound to represent more box office gold for Scott. If you’re not familiar with the exploits of this dodgy character/folk hero (El Chapo, not Ridley Scott!), you can read more about him on Page 82. As the Summer approaches we’re always looking for new experiences, so were very interested to hear about the fun twist that has been applied to afternoon tea by the team at the Sea Grill at Puente Romano.

Another new experience that you will definitely want to have as the mercury starts to soar is La Sala’s brand new venture, Mahiki Beach, which celebrates its grand opening this month. Named after the Polynesian name for the path to the underworld, this fantastic new venue, which also sports branches in London and Dubai, has found its natural home in Marbella. In fact, it’s difficult to think of anything that screams, “Summer on the Coast!” quite as much as a ‘tiki’ (Polynesian style) chiringuito and cocktail bar. Located on the beachfront near the Fuerte Hotel, Ian Radford promises that this latest string to La Sala’s bow will deliver a unique experience which unites the best of Spanish and Polynesian beach culture. We predict that Mahiki Beach will be a massive success. We also bid a fond farewell to Chuck Berry, who died in March. Probably most kindly described as a flawed character, Berry nonetheless changed the face of popular music with hits like ‘Maybelline’, ‘Roll Over Beethoven’ and ‘Johnny B. Goode’. He might have been 90 years old, but he was still recording and performing when he died. Apart from this Bettina visits London and reports on all the best places to find healthy food and Ian Kuah test drives the new Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupé. Mr Rock N Roll A celebrity death making the lead headline on the news might normally raise a few eyebrows, but when Chuck Berry passed away recently at the age of 90, only the most tone deaf questioned his importance in the development of popular music.

orn on October the 18th 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri to Henry William Berry, a contractor and deacon of a Baptist chapel and his wife Martha Bell, the principal of a local high school, the young Chuck had a very comfortable, middle class upbringing. The fourth of six children, his musical aptitude was obvious from a young age and his parents were sufficiently well-heeled to ensure that he had the wherewithal to pursue his ambitions. His first public appearance was at school in 1941 but, in 1944, while still a student at Summer High School, he was arrested for armed robbery and stealing a car at gunpoint.

After his conviction he was sent to the Intermediate Reformatory for Young Men at Algoa, more than a two hour drive away. Chuck even managed to turn this experience to his advantage, forming a singing group that was deemed sufficiently competent to be allowed to perform at various venues beyond the boundaries of the detention centre. Chuck was released on his 21st birthday and, almost a year later, married Themetta Suggs, who was better known by her nickname, Toddy. Following the birth of their daughter, Ingrid on October the 3rd 1950, Chuck knew that he would need to take on any work that he could get to support his family, so he worked at two car assembly plants and became a janitor in the apartment block in which he and Toddy were living. Finding this work a little mundane he decided to train as a beautician and was soon making

enough money to buy a modest but comfortable three-room cottage which is now listed as Chuck Berry House on the US National Register of Historic Places. When extra money was needed for food and nappies, Chuck soon found that he could supplement his beautician's income by playing the guitar with local bands. It wasn't going to make him a millionaire, but it certainly kept the wolf from the door. He had been a keen blues exponent since his youth, copying the style of T-Bone Walker, who was something of a showman and was able to develop this further during his time with Johnnie Johnson's trio. Berry established a strong working relationship with the pianist and brought his uniquely audience-friendly approach to the band's live appearances, showing his ability to nail various genres. Berry quickly became famous for playing a crowd pleasing mixture of rhythm and blues

and country tunes, having developed an innate sense of where the two merged. In May 1955 he travelled to Chicago and met his idol, Muddy Waters, who suggested that he should speak to Leonard Chess of Chess Records. Chess wasn't especially interested in Berry's R&B credentials since the market was shrinking at the time, but was impressed by him and thought that he could well represent the means to move beyond Chess Records' usual sphere of influence. On May the 21st 1955 Berry recorded a new version of an old song, 'Ida Red' under the name of 'Maybellene' and the rest is history. The song sold more than a million copies, reaching Number One on Billboard's Rhythm & Blues chart and Number Five on its Best Sellers in Stores on September the 10th 1955. Berry later credited the spirit of the time for its success: “It came out at the right time when AfroAmerican music

was spilling over into mainstream pop," he would say later. The following year marked the successful release of 'Roll Over Beethoven' and Berry's growing friendship with Carl Perkins, which was kick-started when the pair toured as two of the 'Top Acts of '56'. Perkins said of Berry, “I knew when I first heard Chuck that he'd been affected by country music. I respected his writing; his records were very, very great.” From 1957 to 1959 the hits started to pour out: Berry's more than a dozen chart successes over this period included such classics as 'Rock and Roll Music', 'Sweet Little Sixteen' and the song for which he would probably always be best known, 'Johnny B. Goode'. By the time the 1960s arrived Berry was one of the hottest musical tickets in America, but another criminal conviction, this one for having sex with a 14 year-old waitress. His marriage to Toddy was ended only by his death, but Berry must have given her cause for no small amount of pain and she was left alone to cope with bringing up Ingrid and their other children, Melody, Aloha and Charles Jr. alone as Chuck served his 18 month sentence from February 1962 to October 1963. By the time Berry was released from prison the musical world had changed utterly, British bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones having discovered his music and successfully released versions that brought his influence to a much wider audience. On top of this The Beach Boys had 'reworked' (others prefer 'plagiarised') 'Sweet Little Sixteen' into 'Surfin' USA' and found themselves with a massive hit.

Switching labels to Mercury, Berry had less recording success in the 1960s but quickly gained a reputation as a riveting live performer, using his trademark duck walk and an improvisatory technique that made many musicians find him difficult to work with. The truth was, you never knew what Chuck Berry was going to do until he had done it – and, usually, neither did he. After returning to Chess Records Berry enjoyed one of his greatest successes. Released in 1972, 'My Ding-a-Ling' was based on an earlier composition, 'My Tambourine' and, mostly due to its call and response chorus, cheeky innuendo and notoriety (Britain's Mary Whitehouse led a noisy but

For some of the later baby boomers, raised on UK cover versions of 'Rock and Roll Music' and 'Roll Over Beethoven', it represented a first exposure to Chuck Berry that often resulted in young music

lovers looking for his earlier recordings. He followed this unprecedented success in 1973 with a live recording of 'Reelin' and Rockin'' which became his last Top 40 hit. Not that the world had seen the last of Chuck Berry. He kept up a punishing schedule of live performances throughout his life, although music critics reported that his appearances were, “...increasingly erratic... working with terrible backup bands and turning in sloppy, out-of-tune performances which tarnished his reputation with younger fans and old-timers alike.” For every fan who remembers Berry in his heyday there are an equal number of people who recall his crimes and misdemeanours, which were numerous and continued as he acquired a restaurant, The Southern Air in Wentzville, Missouri. Berry claimed that the video camera that he had installed in the women's toilet was to catch an employee who he suspected of stealing, but he was later forced to settle a

class action suit with 59 women after a police raid on his home allegedly found videotapes of women (and a minor) using the toilets. After a great deal of legal argy-bargy, Berry managed to escape with nothing more serious than a six-month suspended prison sentence and two years' unsupervised probation for possession of 62 grams of marijuana, which was found during the search. He was also ordered to donate $5,000 to a local hospital. Not long before he died Berry revealed that he would be releasing his first album since 1979's Rock It. Chuck, which features Charles Berry Jr. and Ingrid on guitar and harmonica, was dedicated to Themetta, to whom he was married for 68 years at the time of his death, on March the 18th. After a life with Chuck Berry she has surely earned this recognition, even more than he has earned the admiration of his peers.

Tell us about your background in artistic gastronomy. After 20 years experience working as a chef, I look back and think of the drive behind my success. I guess, I used to look up to my big brother who is also a chef and I always wanted to aspire to work along side him. 

”

So, in what other scenarios have you developed your art? In terms of Spanish restaurants, I worked with Dani Garcia when he opened his first restaurant Tragabuches in Ronda. Then there was La Broche in Madrid, which boasts 2 Michelin stars and also Arola in Barcelona which has its own style of casual fine dining. I have acquired a wealth of experience from countries from all over the world such as Holland, Norway, Malaysia, Curacao and Singapore. But my culinary skills will always include an Asian twist as I love their cuisine.

The creativity long with the wellstructured mentality of the management team was a key selling point.

You have experience in Michelin star restaurants and have worked all around the world. Why Marbella now? I always follow projects and professional people to work with, so from the first meeting I had a good feeling for Teatro Marbella. After many years of experience in other countries and cultures, I believe it is the perfect moment and the perfect scenario to put a project together in my homeland. I love Spain, especially Marbella, and my

heart will always be here with my friends and amazing family (I have two beautiful children). We all know Spain offers the best climate in the world and, I am proud to say, an amazing quality of life, both outdoor and indoor, and wonderful people. Plus, the Mediterranean cuisine will always be my favourite.

How will you interpret a theatrical masterpiece into your recipes? Teatro is based on the art, the show, the feelings, the experience and the

cuisine is art itself. In this project I am the Director of Gastronomy, so I will put all my passion, creativity and inspiration into it and have fun all the way. We want to capture the magic of a theatre by interpreting it through our food. For example, I was asked “How do you manage to move an entire play to a plate?” My answer uses these analogies: actors = ingredients, chef = director and flavours = experiences. I think of it as entertainment on your plate. We will strive to continuously surprise and amaze our guests from the first bite. Everything will be accompanied by our fantastic shows

You just mentioned that the cuisine is art. What artistic style can we expect?

“

We will be using only the finest ingredients to create amazing and imaginative culinary delights that you won’t find elsewhere. We believe that when you are in Spain you want to sample Spanish delicacies and we strive to put love and passion into all our dishes whilst applying the most novel and creative trends. But, with regards to the style of food, you can expect to be wowed by the best Spanish products infused with Asian recipes and other lovely ingredients from around the globe.

I will put all my passion, creativity and inspiration into it and have fun all the way.

”

How much growth do you see for Teatro Marbella in years to come? When you combine the show, the interior, the food and the overall experience of the guests, I can only see a rapid growth for Teatro Marbella. We have such an amazing team who are very experienced in all aspects of presenting theatrical drama in a number of different forms. I believe, and so does the rest of the team, that we will exceed the expectations from our demographic and keep our guests coming back for

more. Of course, I have full confidence in my team as we all have a wealth of experience in gastronomy, but with the show, the music, the amazing artists to come in the season, we will undoubtedly be No.1 in our industry.

Twin Peaks – SKY Atlantic It’s here at last! With creators David Lynch and Mark Frost on board for a third season, die-hard fans are already speculating as to what will happen in this very strange town in America’s north-west. When it first aired in 1990 the shockwaves it caused reverberated around the world, but will its comeback receive the same amount of attention? Fingers are being crossed globally, as its many fans await its return and say this simple prayer: “Please let it be even more freaky and weird than it was 25 years ago.” Hopes are high that it will maintain its previously stratospheric standards.

Jonestown – SKY 1 Following the success of the Chips and Tom Hardy imagined and Steven Knight penned BBC1 drama, Taboo, hopes are high that this costume drama will display the same dark edge. Set in 1619, Jonestown follows a disparate – and desperate – group of settlers as they work to build a new world in America. Among the first to arrive are three women who have dreams of a better life than they could ever imagine in Britain and are happy to grasp the challenge of being pioneers. This concept looks like it could well have a few seasons in it, providing it’s handled more effectively than the BBC’s 2015 Australian drama, Banished, which aimed to cover similar ground, albeit on a different continent.

American Gods – Amazon Prime If you’ve been thinking vaguely about subscribing to Amazon’s TV service but haven’t got around to it yet then this is the perfect spur. Neil Gaiman’s fabulously imaginative 2001 novel has been painstakingly brought to life by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, with the co-operation of Gaiman himself. A recently released exconvict named Shadow meets a mysterious man who calls himself Wednesday and knows more than perhaps he should about Shadow’s life and past. This basic premise soon unfolds into a strange and troubling story which encompasses many of America’s myths and legends. If it’s anything like as good as the book it could well be one of the TV events of 2017.

It’s important to have a healthy lifestyle and to surround yourself with good people that inspire you to be the best you can be, so I love my hiking group! We have climbed to the top of every mountain on the Costa del Sol, swum in the lakes, paddle-surfed from Marbella Port to Nikki Beach, kayaked in the windy rivers in Casares and jumped off cliffs into fresh water pools in Estepona. Every week we women take on a new adventure and push our fitness limits. If you haven’t ventured out to try some of the outdoor activities that we are lucky to have here in Andalucia,

We Love Syria

Talking of empowering women, I want to tell you about accessories designer Rania Kinge. One of her lines is called I Love Syria and is dedicated to the empowerment of the displaced women in Syria. The bracelets and bags, inspired by the love Rania has for her native country, are created by women living in shelters. These designs allow a growing number of women to sustain an income, restore their sense of purpose and it also gives them hope. When my team and I first met Brazilian bombshell Cindy Mello as she stepped off the plane from New York to meet us, we all agreed that she has to be the most beautiful woman we have ever seen. I loved the way she connected with the camera; her aura and natural Amazonian body, doe-eyed features and caramel skin have earned her a super, top secret new contract. Next was a visit from my lovely friend and winner of Celebrity Big Brother, Helen Wood. We were meant to be having a weight loss detox, but decided to retox instead. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Olivia’s La Cala and then lunch at one of my favourite places, La Sala (where they also happen to serve free cava to all ladies that lunch #dangerous!)

First up was Mother’s Day which I spent with my beautiful family at Le Cube. I was spoiled rotten by the kids with lots of pressies including two pairs of Louboutins and a Louis Vuitton bag. Looks like my girls have learned just how much I love my shoes and bags!

I also managed to catch up with my lovely friends, Sophie Stanbury from the hit show, Ladies of London and Lily Fortescue from Made in Chelsea for cocktails at Harvey Nicks and a gorgeous dinner at The Chiltern Firehouse. Keep an eye out for me on the next series of Ladies of London because I’ll be making an appearance!

Next I was off to my favourite city: London, as Bardou was invited to attend the Quintessentially Wedding Show at the famous Langham Hotel alongside designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Dior and Giuseppe Zanotti. I’m a huge fashion fan and it was an honour to be asked to attend as the only hair and beauty expert.

My good friend Jana Pulk from the Puente Romano Group asked me to attend the opening of their newest lounge, The Monkey Club. It’s an amazing new concept, with an exterior bar/club serving delicious food from Casa Mono and delectable cocktails while music by some of the hottest Parisian DJs is played.

Happy Easter!

Next was one of my favourite holidays – Easter. Whoever thought of chocolate for breakfast is a genius, even though I’m having to up my gym game now. We took the girls to the exclusive Marbella Club for an Easter Egg Hunt in the morning and then joined friends for a fabulous lunch at Puro Beach. I can honestly say the sushi was some of the best I’ve ever tasted.

Bardou was also asked to do hair and make-up on an exclusive photo-shoot set in Villa Cappuccino. By a random stroke of luck I knew the photographer from back in my modelling days and he convinced me to have a go. I must say I was very happy with the results, although I’m not sure you’ll see me modelling again anytime soon. Think I’ll stick to TV work!

SEPARATING FACTS FROM FICTION In a 2010 Pew Research Center report we see how the marriage and family landscape has changed over the past half century. The statistics give remarkable insights into how modern day folk in western society view things like marriage, cohabiting, single parenting and satisfaction and can be extrapolated to Western Europe.

W

hile the modern family comes in many varieties, these enlightening findings help us to sort through the (mis)perception of modern day choices - and consequences. While in 1960, 72 per cent of American adults were married, in 2008 only 52 per cent were. Part of this change is due to the fact that in 2010, the estimated median age at first marriage for men was 28 and for women it was 26, much higher than 50 years before when, in 1960, it was 22 and 20, respectively. Therefore, the ‘decline’ in marriage rates in 2010 could have little to do with how

many will go on to marry at least once in their lifetime. Pew Research Center does highlight that roughly 90 per cent of those aged 45 and older married (i.e. were married or had been at least once). Part of the decline is also attributed to the number of people who were divorced or separated at the time of the research: 14 per cent in 2008 compared with just five per cent in 1960. Unsurprisingly for us, the number of children born to unmarried mothers has increased massively from five per cent in 1960 to a whopping 41 per cent in 2008. This has also impacted the number

of children under the age of 18 years of age living with two married parents which has dropped from 87 per cent in 1960 to 64 per cent in 2008. Also, 64 per cent of US college graduates married compared with 48 per cent of those who never attended college.

Pew Research Center states, “The net result is that a marriage gap and a socioeconomic gap have been growing side by side for the past half century, and each may be feeding off the other. From my professional experience, I predict the opinion of the under-30s will quite likely change for many, once they move closer to their 40s, as I do find that it is at that point that most of my dating coaching clients start recognising that marriage is something they want and need to start actively working towards. I think many will agree that we, Generation Y and younger, are mentally ‘growing up’ much later these days; these statistics may reflect a lack of selfawareness and a lack of understanding of the impact being unmarried has on the individuals and any offspring they may bear.

e are increasingly aware of the importance of taking care of ourselves and feeling comfortable in many different aspects, including our private parts. WHAT IS THE CO2 LASER? WHAT DOES IT DO? CO2 fractional laser technology in gynaecology has given a new boost to the development of treatments for the vaginal mucous membrane. Gynelase can treat vaginal atrophy, vaginal hyperlaxity and involuntary urination upon exertion (of light or moderate degree).

CO2 laser reduction labiaplasty and vaginal remodelling obtain better and safer results than going under the knife. In fact, laser treatment coagulates and leads to less scarring and inflammation, which reduces post-surgery discomfort for the patient. Myths and Legends Thinking about doing a Cara Delevingne and dyeing your hair icy white blonde? Read on for Jonathan's words of caution before you take the plunge into bleach. Here is everything you need to know, but that no one EVER tells you beforehand.

his month I want to tackle some of the hair inaccuracies currently floating around the industry. I feel I need to explain what is fact and what is fiction when it comes bleach and the peroxide strengths mixed with it. With the massive demand for ombre and balayage (two effects that I love when done correctly), I have noticed that certain hairdressers have a somewhat cavalier approach to the use of bleach.

Now let me get this out there; bleach is one of my favourite chemicals in the world. I love it even more than perm solution, so that should give you some idea of how strongly I feel about it. Bleach is magical! Why? Because, it can get you into some tricky situations, but it can sure as hell get you out of some as well. You try and lighten a brown that’s turned black on a busy Saturday afternoon without a scoop or two of God's own fairy dust! Sadly I am seeing, among the younger generation of hairdressers, a distinct lack of respect for bleach. As with many things in life, once you lose respect for it, it turns on you. I’ve bleached everything with a pulse, but I have NEVER lost respect for this demonically mischievous product. I wouldn't say I am frightened of it, but it has been known to bring me out in a sweat from time to time.

In certain cases with balayage or ombre the only way to gain the effect you want is to use a lightener. I use the word ‘lightener’ because it covers a multitude of sins, as bleach and bleaching products come in many forms. However, they all have one thing in common – they must be treated with the utmost respect. NEVER underestimate the damage that can be done with these products.

nearly caused me to choke on my rather large glass of wine (you try getting through one of my weeks without it!) They were advocating mixing their bleach with 30 per cent and 40 per cent peroxide. If you stuck with that ethos, it would be a sure fire way to find yourself in the wig department of El Corte Inglés.

important tip that I have learned and want to pass onto those up-and-coming colourists is, lower the volume, increase the development time and rinse and repeat until you get the desired shade. Oh, condition the crap out of it too.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU DYE 1. Of all the colouring methods, bleach

is potentially the most damaging and therefore should ideally always be done professionally. A skilled colourist will be able to assess the strength of your hair and how it’s going take to the bleach and also help you find the perfect shade for your skin tone. Because, FYI, ashwhite blonde doesn’t work for everyone.

2. Bleach can strip your hair of life, so

taking a few pre-emptive steps could mean the difference between silky, white strands and a damaged mop. To achieve the best results and maintain the integrity of your hair, only apply it to hair that isn't already damaged.

Seriously, if the colour houses are giving out dangerous advice such as this, what hope do the next generation of colourists have? I would actually throw you out of the salon if you started to do that to a client. Honestly, you would need jet black hair like rope before even considering doing that to it and you might get away with it once, but try it again and there isn’t an Olaplex in the world that would save you.

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

In today's world everyone wants everything done yesterday and this means colourists are willing to ignore the health of their clients' hair and attempt to lighten pieces on often dark tinted bases in one hit. Unrealistic client expectations need to be eradicated by the stylist straight away. If that same

client with a dark base wanted highlights you would go about it in completely a different way, so why should balayage be any different? What needs to be taken into consideration is what can be achieved today to get the client's desired look, while maintaining the hair's optimum condition. There ain’t no colour in the world worth ending up with tufts of hair for. I would honestly say to my client, give me eight weeks and I can get you to that colour. We would have to do it two to three times with a lower peroxide, but at least you will leave the salon with your hair still attached to your head. You see, believe it or not, repeating the bleach process (leaving three to five days in between) is better for the hair than going at it all in one go. I allow the hair to re-harden or, in layman's terms, get over the shock of being blown apart. Slowly slowly catchee monkey. I've tried every brand out there, some good and some not, but the most

3. I’d advise doing lots of conditioning masks for two weeks before the actual bleaching to build up the strength of the hair, Look for a mask to protect and repair before you add more fuel to the fire such as the Kérastase Masque Elixir Ultime, €42,00, which relieves dullness by providing deep nourishment directly to the hair fibre, reviving your hair’s natural strength and leaving it with a glossy sheen.

4. How best to protect your new 'do'?

Your hair may be angry at you for bleaching it, so make sure you continue to look after it with treatments. Bleached hair is vulnerable to damage and snapping. Do not brush or pull your hair roughly and be especially gentle when you style. To help prevent breakage, gently de-tangle bleached hair when wet (or dry), starting from the ends and gradually working up to your roots and try to avoid using heat on it. You don't have to end up as another bleach horror story! By learning a little about how it works and what it can and can't do, you'll have hair that turns heads for all the right reasons.

ince its founding 133 years ago, Mercedes-Benz has led the way with many design cornerstones. One of these is the pillarless coupe, which first saw the light of day on the C114 of 1968. This was the first ‘E-Class’ coupe. That boxy, upright coupe with its stacked headlights and gawky stance is a far cry from the sleek new E-Class Coupe that made its public debut at Detroit in January this year. “The new E-Class Coupe is the vanguard of a new design direction we have been talking about for the last couple of years,” explained Achim-Dietrich Badstübner, who is responsible for the

exterior design of E-Class models. “We have been slowly removing superfluous styling lines from the flanks of our designs, and the E-Class Coupe has no hard lines at all” To my eyes this is the visually bestbalanced coupe that Mercedes makes right now, and is exactly the right size to fill its design brief. In parenthesis, the C-Class Coupe appears truncated from some angles, while the S-Class Coupe seems to have too much real estate to fill, and so ends up just missing the 360-degree perfection in proportion and detail so glibly exhibited by its saloon sister.

The E-Class coupe is 15mm lower than the saloon. The raised centre of its front valence gives the appearance of a lower, sleeker nose, while providing place for the small air splitter that reduces lift over the front axle. Sleek bodywork usually brings with it packaging compromises, but the new E-Class Coupe makes the most of its 2,783mm wheelbase. While this is 66mm shorter than the saloons, it is still 113mm longer than the outgoing E212 Coupe, with 74mm of this added to the rear compartment for generous leg and knee room.

Front and rear headroom is increased by 18mm in front and 15mm at the rear, resulting in good headroom for tall people despite the sloping roofline. With more legroom in its rear compartment than big brother S-Class Coupe, this is a real four-seat coupe. If the elegant exterior is stunningly effective in its minimalism use of form and proportions, the cabin draws you in with its plushness. The basic cabin architecture, and the instrument pack is derived from the saloon, but with the styling dial turned up to 11. The unique air vents were inspired by jet engine turbines, and use internal flaps to adjust airflow to avoid disturbing their visual alignment as an interior design

A nice finishing touch is the aluminium door lock pins, which Marijan Celig, the head of E-Class Product Management, said he had to fight very hard to justify, both to the bean counters and the production engineers. But it is the attention to detail with minor components like this that makes the E-Class Coupe look and feel really special, whether you choose the basic Avantgarde Line or the more sporting AMG Line. “The use of authentic materials is very important,” said Marijan. “Only the most basic car with cloth upholstery would not have a leather covered dashboard. But since just about every buyer of such a car specifies leather, this is a non-issue and the result is luxurious. However, the optional Nappa leather trim also comes with a better grade of soft leather for the dashboard that takes the whole interior to the next level.” The large expanses of glass mean that the cabin can heat up significantly when the car is parked under the sun. “To minimise heat soak on the seats we use the same sun reflective leather on the coupe as on our convertibles,” explained Marijan.

The spacious and regular shaped boot reaches all the way back under the parcel shelf to swallow 425 litres of luggage. Folding rear seatbacks are an option that further extends the Coupe’s cargo carrying ability.

“THE NEW E-CLASS COUPE IS THE VANGUARD OF A NEW DESIGN DIRECTION WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS,” Carrying the baton as the latest pillarless Mercedes coupe, the new E-Class is naturally not quite as structurally stiff as its four-door sister. To compensate for the loss of the B-pillar, extra reinforcing is placed in the side sills, A-pillars, roof frame, and rear bulkhead, with thicker high strength steel used in various critical areas of the structure. The bonnet, bootlid and front wings are aluminium, and the coupe ends up 25kg heavier

than the equivalent saloon with the same engine. Ride quality is subjectively quantified in the automobile industry using the two measures of primary and secondary ride. With the latest Air Ride suspension option, the E-Class Coupe is able to pull of a seemingly ‘magical’ balance of ride and handling that is peerless in this class. Uprated by around 15-20 percent for the more driver focused Coupe, Mercedes’ multi-chamber Air Body Control (ABC) suspension, featuring two chamber front

ABC suspension also offers self-levelling and a ride height increase for clearing ramps and rough road surfaces at the touch of a button, while Dynamic Select gives the driver the choice of Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport+ and Individual settings. When I drove the W213 E-Class saloon last year, its comprehensive cabin sound insulation stood out as a beacon of excellence. The Coupe also sets a very impressive class benchmark in this regard. Where the side mirrors are mounted in the triangle of the front doors on the saloon, styling considerations have placed them on the Coupe’s doors where they do indeed look better. But the downside is the sound of air rushing past, which stands out only because every other extraneous sound in the Coupe has been so well suppressed. The Coupe’s outstanding aerodynamic performance is reflected in its Cd of just 0.25. Ride and handling are affected by wheel and tyre size, and the four-cylinder models come with 17-inch footwear in basic form, with 18 and 19-inch options. The largest size is 20-inch for the AMG Line, which comes with 19s as standard.

Bizarrely however, while I picked up some low speed tyre noise on the E220d 4Matic Coupe shod with the smaller 18-inch wheels shod with Dunlop Sport MAXX tyres, the larger Pirelli P-Zero rubber on the staggered 20-inch wheel combination fitted to the E300 AMG Line was well nigh silent on similar road surfaces. Thanks to EU drive-by noise regulations as well as the search for extra refinement, the latest crop of low profile tyres manage to combine high performance and good comfort with low rolling acoustics. Ultimately however, low tyre noise as perceived by the microphone and occupants ears, is down to how well a given tyre’s inherent characteristics interact with a cars structural resonance, within which the suspension bushing is just one factor. Cruising at 130km/h on a light throttle, I turned off the excellent Burmester audio system in order to seek out any extraneous noises. The four-cylinder diesel powered E220d 4Matic is mechanically near silent at this speed, vindicating the measures the engineers have taken to first of all minimise NVH from the power plant itself, and then quell any remainder using advanced engine bay encapsulation techniques.

CRUISING AT 130KM/H ON A LIGHT THROTTLE, I TURNED OFF THE EXCELLENT BURMESTER AUDIO SYSTEM IN ORDER TO SEEK OUT ANY EXTRANEOUS NOISES. The latest four-cylinder turbo-diesel (OM654) is a paradigm of refinement. This 1,950cc all-alloy, balancer-shaft equipped motor only becomes more vocal under hard acceleration when it emits a pleasantly subdued sporty growl that does not last for long since the nicespeed automatic has so many close ratios. With 194hp at 3,800rpm and 400Nm of torque on a plateau from 1,600 to 2,800rpm this turbo-diesel motor gives

the 1,735kg E220d 4Matic Coupe decent pace, its 7.4sec 0-100km/h sprint and 242km/h top speed is less than representative of the cars ability to cover ground rapidly. An entry-level E200d and a V6 diesel will be available later, while the only V6powered Coupe at launch is the petrol powered, turbocharged 333hp/480Nm E400 4Matic, which sprints to 100km/h in 5.3 sec, and sits on 18-inch wheels. As Mercedes makes more of its outstanding 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, the advantages in terms of being able to put down all the power all of the time make for more efficient use of the available power and torque. The E300 Coupe is a rather different animal. The turbocharged 16-valve fourcylinder 1,991cc petrol engine produces 245hp at 5,500rpm, underpinned by 370Nm of torque from 1,400 to 4,000rpm. It has a smooth and sporty character that punches hard low down and revs willingly to its redline with a throaty, guttural soundtrack.

Helped by the close ratios of its 9G-Tronic automatic, the 6.4 sec 0-100km/h sprint is rapid for a 1,685kg car powered by a 1,991cc engine, and is actually quicker than the old V6-powered C209 CLK320. Top speed is 250km/h. Ironically, the petrol four is a more vocal engine than its heavy oil-burning counterpart, a fact that you can take two ways. If you are after cabin refinement, then the E220d is the quieter of the two, but if you are after a sportier, high-revving motor then the E300 should be your choice. The one downside of the petrol engine is its partnership with rear-wheel-drive only. Marijan explained that market research clearly defined the models with which 4Matic is offered, and the E300 is not one of them. However, thanks to its staggered 20-inch wheels and sticky Pirellis, my rear-driven E300 test car stuck to dry tarmac like a limpet. From a keen drivers’ point of view its is just powerful enough to allow throttle steering in slow and medium speed bends, while the very precise medium-weighted electro-mechanical power steering helps make the car feel pointy and agile.

In the end however, while the E-Class Coupe is clearly sportier than the saloon, you will not find deep joy in driving any of the four-cylinder models in this manner. Their handling competence should not be mistaken for the sporting talent that will be the province of the E43 AMG 4Matic Coupe with its greater punch, inspirational V6 soundtrack, and tuned chassis due later this year. As has been highlighted recently, car manufacturers official average fuel consumption figures and owners real world results are two quite different

In the mixed and rapid driving on the launch event I saw a best of 6.3 L/100km (claimed 4.0 L/100km) from the E220d, and 10.1 L/100km (claimed 6.4 L/100km) from the E300.

On the bizarre front, the entry-level 184hp/300Nm E200 petrol model comes with a six-speed manual gearbox in the German market, with the 9G-Tronic auto as a cost option. This market peculiarity presents a really basic car at an attractive price for customers on a very tight budget who simply must have the car. While this oddball model will make up barely 1% of sales, Mercedes considers it worthwhile offering it only because a saloon version already exists to make up the numbers. We were told that more variants like the E300d and the V6 diesel will be added as production is ramped up. At the other end of the scale, there will be no Hybrid version of the E-Class Coupe. “There is simply no demand from our Coupe customers,” said Marijan. The new E-Class Coupe goes on sale in Europe and the UK simultaneously on 18th March. Other markets like the US, Australia and Asia will have to wait a little longer for these Bremen-built beauties simply because of shipping times.

The Legend of

El Chapo By Eleanor McKenzie

In the first of a series on the powerful drug cartels of Colombia and Mexico, we look at the man of the moment – El Chapo -- head of the Sinaloa cartel and subject of Ridley Scott’s latest film to be shot in Málaga.

A

s Ridley Scott prepares to film the story of Mexican drug kingpin ‘El Chapo’ (that’s Shorty in English), the leader of the infamous Sinaloa cartel has been making the news himself – yet again! In January 2017, Joaquin Guzmán Loera, more popularly known as ‘El Chapo’ was escorted off a plane in New York state to face the American criminal justice system, even though the Mexican government had previously claimed that this ‘most wanted’ man would first serve a prison sentence in his home country. Mind you, as the New York Times reported, El Chapo has “twice slipped out of Mexican jails and into criminal legend” during the decades long quest to prosecute this leader of one of the world’s biggest narcotics trafficking operations, which may partly explain the Mexican government’s capitulation. The about-face by the Mexican government may be laid at El Chapo’s feet; if he hadn’t tunnelled out of Mexico’s highest security prison in 2015, they may have considered keeping him, especially in view of the current President Trump’s rather aggressive statements about Mexico, building a wall and all the ‘bad hombres’ that he’s so convinced only come from down Mexico way. The effort to recapture El Chapo after his 2015 escape was one of Mexico’s most exhaustive manhunts and it is understandable that they didn’t want to go through a similar one again. Certainly, his capture and extradition is quite a coup for both the Mexicans and Americans, because El Chapo is so much more than a plain old drugs trafficker.

EL CHAPO ENJOYED MORE OF A KIND OF ROBIN HOOD STATUS, A FOLK HERO OF THE PEOPLE. The drug cartel business is a multibilliondollar industry and this farm boy turned billionaire who, like his Colombian equivalent, Pablo Escobar, has a flair for drama, became a symbol of the breakdown of the rule of law in Mexico, the poster boy for America’s obsession with the narcotics trade and a reminder to both the American and Mexican governments of their failure to control the flow of drugs into the U.S. and beyond. But in the region ruled by the Sinaloa cartel, El Chapo enjoyed more of a kind of Robin Hood status – a folk hero of the people.

From Farm Boy to Folk Hero

El Chapo and his gang may have left a trail of blood across Mexico, but that didn’t stop him from becoming a hero to the masses. In Sinaloa he is fondly remembered by some for handing out money to the poor and covering restaurant bills, amongst other gifts of largesse. And, his daring escapes only enhanced people’s view of him as a romantic outlaw rather than as a murderous criminal. It’s a form of celebrity status that he shares with Pablo Escobar of Colombia’s Medellín cartel. Anyone who has followed Escobar’s

story, or watched the recent TV drama series “Narcos” that so engrossingly charted the rise and fall of Escobar will recognise the similarities between the two. Both men repeatedly outwitted officials in ways that seemed to come straight out of a novel. As they say, the truth is often stranger than fiction. Take, El Chapo’s first prison escape in 2001. On this occasion he was reputedly hidden in a laundry cart and simply wheeled out. While on the run, he managed to evade arrest by hiding in secret passages under bathtubs or by simply mysteriously slipping into the shadows moments before a federal raid. As one journalist has said, the public fascination with El Chapo increased because “you could never really count him out.” Like many a fictional daredevil and folk hero who is on the wrong side of the law but you just can’t help but admire them, El Chapo

perfected his Houdini-like escape hatches, trap doors and underground tunnels. He left nothing to chance: he sent his ‘engineers’ to Germany for training and on their return he sent them to his numerous homes and hideouts to build secret exits into wardrobes, bathrooms and refrigerators. This is fitting behaviour for the man who pioneered the tunnel system of transporting thousands of tons of drugs into the USA. No wall was going to keep him out! And no prison could keep him in, as the governor of Altiplano high security prison discovered, even with 24hour security surveillance in his cell.

HOW TO ESCAPE FROM

El Chapo’s last great escape, and frankly he deserves kudos for an imagination that Hollywood scriptwriters and thriller writers would love to have, not to mention a technical skill to pull it off that is almost unbelievable. But, it did indeed happen.

Just before 9pm on the evening of July 11th 2015, he stepped into his cell’s en suite shower and passed through a small hole in the floor, positioned in the surveillance camera’s only blind spot. From this exit he descended into a mile-long tunnel equipped with a motorcycle on rails and zoomed off to freedom. Steve McQueen would have been proud. While on the run, he celebrated his freedom by hanging out with Hollywood celebrities, including Sean Penn who wanted to discuss making a film of El Chapo’s life. One imagines he’s had many such offers. However, he couldn’t be allowed to roam around, brazenly enjoying the glittering company of actors and after a manhunt that involved 2,500 people he was captured crawling out of a sewer in the town of Los Mochis in early 2016. In the end his fascination with the subterranean was his downfall. Experts believe that now he is incarcerated in the USA, his chances of making another impressive break out are much reduced, but it’s early days and with this man you just never know. From a political perspective, it is worth noting that Mexico handed El Chapo over on the last day of the Obama presidency rather than on the first day of Trump’s. Some say that this is

a clear message from Mexico to the new President that they don’t welcome his comments about Mexicans. One security expert in Mexico City said:”By not waiting to send him to Trump after his inauguration, it is a subtle statement saying, ‘We could do this for you, too, in the future, if we have a good relationship.’” And, he added, “If not, there won’t be any other powerful narco traffickers extradited.” It remains to be seen whether they can keep El Chapo in the USA, or whether he’ll turn up somewhere the other side of Niagara Falls, lounging by a pool in Belair or back in Culiacán at Sinaloa HQ. Whatever your views on his business, you can’t deny that he has the cojones to pull any one of these off.

WANTED Teeth!

n February 10th, 1792, the following advertisement appeared in a London newspaper: “Wanted – Several Human Front Teeth. To prevent unnecessary applications, those only are wanted that are sent from the Continent. Apply to Mr. Woffendale, Dentist, No. 21, Dover Street, Piccadilly”. The point about continental teeth was that they were far healthier than British teeth. People who could afford such teeth tended also to be addicted to sugar, which had a deleterious effect on tooth enamel. In an effort to remedy

this all sorts of acidic concoctions were applied, which further wore away the enamel. Tooth decay was rampant, which led to black teeth (from which Elizabeth 1st suffered) and stinking breath. Society ladies hid behind fans, which came into fashion, and everybody sitting for a portrait kept the mouth firmly shut. Today, of course, the Americans have a similarly poor view of British gnashers. In 1783 a New York dentist was offering two guineas for a sound tooth, whilst two years earlier Paul Jullion of Gerrard Street in London was offering a similar amount.

At the time a set of such dentures, made out of human teeth and ivory would have cost about £100. A coachman’s wage at the time was £8 per year. The poorer classes could, of course, sell their teeth, but the number of such donors was limited and, in any case, as we have seen, British teeth were generally not totally desirable! But the practice of making false teeth by jewellers, chemists, wigmakers and blacksmiths, quite apart from barbers and dentists, had been in vogue since the sixth century BC. The Etruscans were past-masters at the art,

This gold bridgework not only looked impressive, but was stout enough to enable the wearer to eat as normal. Such cannot be said of the British nineteenth century variety. Equally it has to be said, of course, that notwithstanding the American view of British false teeth, George Washington’s dentures were made of wood, which greatly impaired his enjoyment of a good steak! Some animal teeth were shaped to fit the human mouth. Hippopotamus teeth, for example, could be bought between two shillings (10p) to twenty five shillings to the pound, depending upon the quality, to be cut and moulded. As with human teeth, the tooth was boiled, the base filed down and then fitted with a pin to be embedded in an ivory prosthesis. The problem, however, with such teeth was that owing to a lack of enamel, tooth decay invariably and quickly set in. Ashley Cooper, a prominent surgeon in nineteenth century London, solved

his problem of cadavers on which to practise by employing a band of “resurrection men”. He offset part of his expenses by selling teeth to dentists. Indeed, his nephew Bransby Cooper reported: “The graves were not always disturbed to obtain possession of the entire body, for the teeth alone at this time offered sufficient remuneration for the trouble and risk incurred in such undertakings. Every dentist in London would at this time purchase teeth from these men”. The advantage to the resurrectionist was that however decayed and rotting the corpse may be upon being dug up, the teeth were often useable. The poor had little with which to rot their teeth.But at this time there was also a very fecund source of supply. “Only let there be a battle and there will be no want of teeth; I’ll draw them as fast as the men are knocked down” wrote one scavenger. During the Peninsular War (1808-1814 AD) there were so many teeth that they were shipped back to England and the States by the barrel load. In 1819 the American Levi Spear Parmly (the inventor of floss) reported that he had “in his possession thousands of teeth extracted from bodies of all ages that have fallen in battle”. Such supplies increased dramatically during the Crimean War (1854-1856 AD), whilst in the 1860s the armies of the American Civil War proved a rich source of supply. Perhaps the greatest and most famous of all, however, was the battle fought on the 18th June, 1815, on the field of Waterloo. It is too romantic to suggest that such teeth were drawn on the battlefield itself, although many indeed may have been by the looters who

invariably appeared after a battle. But corpses, numbering some fifty thousand, were carted off the field and buried in mass graves, after being deprived of their front teeth by dentists on hand for the purpose. One such dentist, Claudius Ash, hit on a marketing ploy which ensured a ready sale: “Waterloo Teeth”. The good condition of young soldiers’ teeth made them highly desirable. Such teeth were shaped and sorted so that both upper and lower sets matched. Few molars were removed from corpses as they were tricky to extract, and far more bothersome to shape and fix. The 1832 Anatomy Act tightened up the regulations regarding spare parts from corpses, but by the middle of the nineteenth century the use of human teeth in dentures was already in decline. Not that this was in any way due to a dearth of supply! It was simply that other products were coming on the market. Claudius Ash, of Waterloo Teeth fame, developed porcelain teeth, which are still with us today, whilst a pink vulcanite, produced by Charles and Nelson Goodyear (of motorcar tyre fame) from India rubber, was a relatively cheap substitute for ivory. This was in the 1840s, and was, in fact, the last major advance in prosthetic dentistry until well into the twentieth century when acrylic replaced vulcanite and fluoride made an appearance in toothpaste. The first qualification in dentistry in the United Kingdom was introduced in 1858, followed in 1878 by the first legislation governing the practice, with a register of dentists following a year later.

La Suite is open from midnight until 6 am every weekend, and from Tuesday to Saturday in summer.

he perfect plate of grilled fish on the Costa del Sol can only be improved by adding the right glass of Spanish wine on the side. Now that the summer is here our palates - and stomachs – tend to favour the lightness of fish, especially with the aroma of all those delicious sardine barbecues being prepared on beaches along the Coast. However, some diners still appear to be a little confused about which wines to drink with fish. Get it right and your enjoyment can only be enhanced. Get it wrong and you have quite possibly ruined a perfectly good dinner. The rule of thumb for pairing wine with food is that white wine goes with fish and red wine with meat. That’s not the case anymore. While white wine is still often the best choice with simple, grilled or broiled white fish, light to medium red wines are frequently a good complement to grilled meaty or oily fishes.

D-Wine Advice The basic guideline is to match the texture of the fish with the body of the wine. Lean and delicate white fish (Sea Bass, Sole, Cod, Halibut, Monkfish, Red Snapper, Hake and Trout) goes well with light to medium bodied, zesty and refreshing whites such as Albarinho, Godello, Treixadura, Verdejo and unoaked Viura to balance the delicate fish flavour. fter a period spent in the wilderness it seems that afternoon tea is making something of a comeback, with swanky London establishments such as Fortnum & Mason, The Ritz and Claridge’s all reporting massively increased bookings for their fivestar afternoon experiences. Given the frantic pace of our lives it seems astonishing, but the evidence is clear to anyone who wants to book tea and scones and F&M. A six-month wait, anyone?

We love afternoon tea, so were delighted when we were invited to sample the new experience offered at Sea Grill, Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa. It certainly proves that this sublimely refined ritual can be enjoyed

in Marbella as easily as in London and in such beautiful surroundings too. Andrew Martin’s fabulous interiors help to make this an outing to remember, as does the sumptuous beachside setting.

with olive oil and mini bocadillos with beef and rocket. Although we all love a cup of tea, we enjoyed the glass of local cava that formed part of this very enjoyable Spanish take on afternoon tea. There is something faintly sinful about enjoying an afternoon treat at a time when we are usually hard at work in the office, but we can see why the tea ritual is making a comeback. It acts as a lovely memory of a bygone age when time was not at such a premium and relaxation was possible.

What we especially enjoyed was that every element clearly reflected aspects of Andalusian cluture along with this famous fashion collection, which caused a sensation when it was premiered on the catwalk in Milan. Just think of the term ‘matador’ and its evocation of fine tailoring, fabulous flamenco flair and a bold red rose and deep black colour palate.

We absolutely loved the castanet macaroons, made with almond flour and filled with an almond cream, which is very much a traditional Andalusian flavour and made us smile with delight. Another touch of genius was provided by the sombrero hat mini cordobés, made with chocolate and decorated with edible flowers and the orange blossom water Piononas pastries were so lovely it seemed a shame to ruin them by eating them all. Yes, we did actually eat them all.

London brand Mahiki has joined forces with Sala Group and ventured beyond city nightclubs and onto Marbella’s beach. By Eleanor McKenzie

M

ahiki is the Polynesian name for the Path to the Underworld, which is a fitting name for the ritzy nightclub of this name in London’s Mayfair that regularly attracts young royals as well as a host of celebrity faces. But, now Mahiki is opening in Marbella as a relaxed and fun beach venue, so it will be more of a path to the sun, sand and a sensational vibe. Mahiki Beach by Sala is the latest venue opened by the Sala Group and its Chairman Ian Radford told SOCIETY that it is the result of many months of discussions between La Sala and the owners of Mahiki. Ian Radford and the directors at Mahiki London have been mutual friends for some years and the prospect of expanding the Mahiki brand in a new format suited to life in the sun proved to be a concept of mutual interest. The launch couldn’t have happened at a better time, as Marbella is fast attracting international brands to its leisure and dining scene, the opening of a Nobu restaurant being just one example, and like Mahiki, it is another celebrity haunt. The concept will be something entirely new to the Mahiki group, which has until now specialised in city-based clubs before, and the Sala Group will add its successful business model to it, bringing to Marbella a beach club style that has never been seen before in the form of the tiki-style “chiringuito” and cocktail bar, with a food menu typical of a Spanish “chiringuito” and entertainment that promises to be truly theatrical.

What is Tiki style?

Tiki, according to Polynesian legend, was the first man and the name is also given to various Polynesian gods. Traditional carvings found around the Pacific islands depict these gods or tikis, and these carvings, along with other Polynesian designs are the foundation of the tiki bar style. Tiki culture originated in the USA during the 20th century and is a term used to describe Polynesian-style restaurants and clubs. The style was inspired by traditional Polynesian culture and mythology and the first venue to use it was Don the Beachcomber in 1934, a Hollywood restaurant decked out with flaming torches, rattan furniture, flower leis and brightly coloured fabrics. The Polynesian theme was quickly adopted by Victor Bergeron of Trader Vic’s, a chain that started in California, but soon became well known around the globe. As anyone who has visited Trader Vic’s

will remember, the tiki style is centered around bamboo, wooden masks and carvings, thatched surfaces, lava stones, hula girls, and other Southern Pacific accoutrements.

The new venue will create a South Pacific paradise on Marbella’s beach front, next to the Fuerte Hotel. However, as Ian Radford explained, it will have a Spanish twist and suggested that it will be more “Spanish chiringuito meets Tiki bar.” He is keen to emphasise that the beach club will be unpretentious and have a more “feet in the sand” vibe, reflecting the more laid back style that Costa del Sol residents once enjoyed at the now departed Sonora Beach with the comfort and informality of some of the coast’s most famous beach restaurants that have stood the test of time.

At the heart of the tiki theme are the cocktails. The Mai Tai (rum, orange Curacao, syrup and lime juice) is considered by many to be the quintessential one and the emphasis at any tiki bar is typically on rum-based cocktails with tropical fruit ingredients, which have been going through a revival in recent years. However, at Mahiki Beach by Sala, the cocktails will be created to suit every taste, whether it is rum, gin, tequila or whiskey. There will certainly be a selection of Tahitiinspired cocktails including a Pina Colada served in a frozen pineapple and a Coconut Bomb in a real coconut.

Guests can also expect an exciting live fire show every night at sundown from Thursday to Sunday. Plus, if you are a lady, then you should definitely make sure you visit on a Sunday, which is Ladies Day, when you can have a selected plate and drinks including Cava and the daily special Cocktail for four hours between 12-4pm, and all for only 45€. It sounds like it may be best to plan ahead with this one and make sure you’re not working on Monday.

If you want to go all out, order the Treasure Chest, which is quite literally a treasure chest filled with a fruity champagne concoction accompanied by dry ice and sparklers.

Wright who will be DJing, premiership footballers and Craig David, who will not be performing at the party, but who will take to the stage at AqwaMist for the after party. He will, however, be performing at Mahiki Beach in July, so we can look forward to that.

Alongside the tiki bar and the beach loungers there will also be an oasis area surrounded by lush greenery where guests can take time to cool off out the afternoon heat. Plus some rather quirky and cool details, such as a cloakroom designed as a confessions booth and don’t be surprised if you are greeted at the entrance by a talking cockatoo. It will also have an ‘espeto’ boat manned by a skilled ‘espetero’. An espeto (stick) of sardines is one of the delights of summer in Marbella and the smell wafting across the beach is a strong stimulant to the digestive juices. Paellas, fresh fish and other dishes traditionally associated with the Mediterranean cuisine as well as a selection of La Sala’s Signature dishes and Mahiki’s tropical grill menu will also feature, and all will be prepared fresh by Sala’s excellent chefs.

It’s a great place for just being present in the moment and people watching and, if you are lucky enough to catch the sun, it is hands down one of the greatest and most fun cities in the world. Having said that I think my best tip for anyone visiting London is to go with the flow, enjoy the high pulse of one of the world’s greatest cities and find those hidden gems that make it so special. If you’re in London on a weekend a food market is a must. Here are two that take an effort to get to but are worth it as they are still relatively small and very authentic.

Broadway Market Broadway Market is a shopping street nestled in the heart of Hackney, East London. Established on an old drovers’ route into the city, Broadway Market has been home to market traders since the 1890s, and provides a unique kaleidoscope of tastes and cultures. Chatsworth Road Market In its 1930s heyday Chatsworth Road Market is reported to have had up to 200 stalls, running four to five days a week, extending along the full length of the street. Best Health Stores Every time I go to London I spend most of my time in two stores: Planet Organic, a chain of stores spread out throughout the city and Wholefoods Market, also found in several locations throughout London. Anything that is hip, new or trendy will be stocked in these stores. Yes, it does all come with a fairly hefty price tag, so choose wisely.

London, being what it is, can never be described as cheap but, if you choose to use public transport and don’t over consume, chances are that you will experience some amazing food and culture. It never ceases to surprise me how much variety there is. It truly has become a food mecca.
