Programme description: Unsaturated carbonyl compounds. Cycloaddition reactions. Organic sulphur compounds. Dyes – their synthesis and classification. Free radical, ionic, coordination, condensation and addition polymerization processes. Example polymers. Carbohydrates. Reactions of selected heterocyclic compounds. Oxidation and reduction processes. Functional group interconversions. Basics of retrosynthesis and molecular design. Functional group protection. Mechanisms of selected inter- and intramolecular rearrangements. Application of spectroscopic methods (e.g., NMR, IR, UV-Vis, MS) for structure determination and identification of organic compounds.
Training effect – skills and competence: Students will broaden their knowledge of organic chemistry for aspects necessary for effective problem solving within the scope of organic synthesis, and, they will gain basic skills of planning synthetic procedures, prediction of the reaction courses and determination of the structure of products.
The lecturer informs about requirements, weight of assessment components, recommended literature, schedule of tests or other organizational issue at the first meeting.
