Programme description: Classification of crude oils. Composition of crude oil fractions of various origin. Fractional composition and molecular species in crude oils. Physicochemical properties testing: boiling point and distillation curves, density, refractive index, compositional analysis, viscosity, flash point, vapour pressure, volatility index, pour point, cloud point, freezing point, smoke point. Cetane number and diesel index. Octane number. Transport properties in general and interrelationship among them. Surface and interfacial tension. ASTM Standards and testing methods for petroleum products. Typical and standard physicochemical properties of gasoline, solvents (naphtha), kerosene, fuel oil, lubricating oil and grease. Asphalts – chemical composition and colloidal structure.
Training effect – skills and competence: The objective of this course is to give the student an understanding of physicochemical properties of the whole spectrum of petroleum products and the effect of the composition and properties on their performance.
The lecturer informs about requirements, weight of assessment components, recommended literature, schedule of tests or other organizational issue at the first meeting.
