Programme description: Actual dioxin problem. Structure of dioxin (polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans) and related compounds like PCB, HCB and brominated flame retardants (BFR). Biochemistry and toxicity. Industrial and non-industrial dioxin sources, their environmental distribution and fate. Pathways of dioxin environmental distribution, bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Health risk characterization of dioxin and related compounds. Dioxin and related compounds in food, feedingstuff and in the Environment. Abatement methods for minimizing of emission dioxin to atmosphere from industrial sources like metallurgy, waste incineration, waste co-firing etc. Dioxin monitoring program. Chemical and biological methods for the determination of dioxin and dioxin-like compounds. 2h Laboratory course of samples pretreatment, extraction and clean-up for dioxin analysis. Some aspects in laboratory accreditation procedure.
Training effect – skills and competence: Understanding mechanisms of formation of dioxins in thermal processes, environmental transport, distribution, transformations, toxic effects in animals and humans. Hazard assessment and risk management. Appropriate municipal and hazardous waste managing especially with respect to thermal methods. Prevention of dioxin pollution from uncontrolled waste burning in houses and from open-burning. Competence in the determination of dioxins and related compounds in food, feed and environmental samples.
The lecturer informs about requirements, weight of assessment components, recommended literature, schedule of tests or other organizational issue at the first meeting.
