Programme description: Dangers connected with storage, transport and distribution of petroleum and oil products – fires, explosions, spillages of oil products, environment contamination (pollution of air, surface and ground waters, soil). Flammability classes and explosive limits of oil products. Regulations concerning fuel terminals. Losses connected with storage of volatile fuels and how to reduce them. Different tank types used in hydrocarbon processing industry. Parameters of the product under storage and climatic data required for proper choice of the tank type and applied materials. Tank farms in refineries – regulations. Tank equipment modern measurement methods. Leaks detection. Cleaning, conservation and inspections of tanks. Loading terminals. Vapour recovery systems. ADR and other equivalent regulations. Modern tank farm inventory and management systems. Fire and explosions protection. Health and safety at work. Safety during maintenance and repair. Portable flares in emergency response situations. Strategic oil reserves in the salt domes.
Training effect – skills and competence: Students gain: - awareness of danger connected with storage, transport and distribution of fuels, - knowledge of modern technical solutions in tanks' construction and equipment, - ability to choose a proper tank type for a given product to guarantee safety handling, correct inventory management and minimization of VOCs emission and leaks, - information concerning proper tank inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and operation. For better understanding the problems connected with storage of liquid volatile compounds the course 'Storage Tanks' strongly advised.
The lecturer informs about requirements, weight of assessment components, recommended literature, schedule of tests or other organizational issue at the first meeting.
