Programme description: Determination of aromatic organic compounds in gasoline and Diesel fuel. Determination of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in fumes and soot from incomplete combustion of petroleum fuels. Trace analysis of toxic organic compounds using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry on the example of dioxins and dioxin-like PCB. The courses covers the basis of the theory of chromatography with explanation as to how each component of the system functions. The courses also cover the hardware maintenance, column care and assist the operator in developing troubleshooting skills.
Training effect–skills and competence: The laboratory should help the student develop a broad array of basic skills and tools of modern chromatographic methods. Experience from hands-on laboratory exercises in sample preparation and clean-up for chromatographic analysis. Understanding of gas and liquid chromatography instrumentation, manual instrument operation, determination of trace organic pollutants in the Environment samples. Determination of aromatic organic compounds in petroleum products. Skills in quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) in instrumental analytical chemistry.
The lecturer informs about requirements, weight of assessment components, recommended literature, schedule of tests or other organizational issue at the first meeting.
