CHAPTER 1 Summer Pinkerton knew how to do her job as an investigator with dedication and focus. She lived in a studio apartment in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida…a little, seaside town that was known for its constant breeze and sunny days. Summer’s last investigative job was one year ago. She thought it was fun being unemployed. She watched lots of HGTV. She planned for her dream house, but she was going to need big money to make her dreams come true. Business was very slow for some reason…she knew she needed to improve her skills. Finally, a wealthy client requested an interview with Summer. She agreed and hoped for the best. She really needed the money. On February the 15th, Summer headed off to the house of Mr. Brock W. Brill, the billionaire. It was around 8 p.m. when she arrived. The billionaire was just about done with dinner. He enjoyed a glass of Royal DeMaria and that always brought his evening to an end. It
!1
was a common practice among the ultra, high-net-worth individuals of South Florida who loved the finer things in life. Summer, who grew up middle-class, did not even understand such an upper-class lifestyle. While she waited to meet the billionaire for the first time, she pulled-down her black, plain baseball cap against her shiny, mirrored-sunglasses. The billionaire, Brock Brill, was a man built with muscle. In fact, he was rock solid. His height gave him the added appearance of physical power. Mr. Brill grew up poor like so many others, but he wanted to prove his worth to everyone. If earning more than a billion dollars was stressful, he never showed it with wrinkled skin or gray-headed hair. It was impossible for Summer to figure out his age when she looked at him. Mr. Brill never missed any details in business or in life and he did it in an entertaining way. Having become a billionaire from nothing, he expected discipline and nothing less. As Summer walked into the room, the billionaire started off with, “Mister Sum-ner Pin-ker-ton.” “That’s Summer, Mr. Brill…and I’m ok with Ms. Pinkerton or just Summer. I’m sure you know the difference between a guy and a girl.” Mr. Brill continued, “Well, with that boring baseball cap, mirrored-sunglasses, those steel-toe boots, and those heavy footsteps, I didn’t notice your tattooed-eyeliner. Sorry!” Summer snapped back, “If you can tell the difference between liquid eyeliner and these eyeliner tattoos behind my mirrored-sunglasses, I’m certain you know that I’m a woman.” The billionaire softly added, “Interesting
!2
response…so, are you here to analyze my skills or are you here to work on a case for me? For your information, one job pays great money and the other job gets you escorted off my estate with no money.” Summer slowly unwrapped two sticks of Juicy Fruit gum, put them in her mouth, and continued, “Whatever. I’m not sure where you were going with any of that stuff anyway, but I’m sure you already heard that I’m an experienced investigator. So, how can I help you?” Summer chewed her gum. It popped and cracked a few times. Her behavior definitely made Mr. Brill angry. Then she added, “I’m not much for small talk. Anyways.” Mr. Brill gently placed his wine glass down, stood up, and was about to have Summer escorted off his estate, but… Gary, the gardener, interrupted and shouted for Mr. Brill…he did not see Summer at first. He always called him "Mr. Brill", as did all of the billionaire’s other workers. It was a show of respect. Before Gary continued any further, the billionaire stopped him from talking. Mr. Brill told him to start off by first slowing down, leaving the room, and then relaxing for a moment. He also told him to speak more clearly upon his return, because usually he did not understand him whenever he talked all crazy and excited. This was Mr. Brill at his best, an enforcer of selfcontrol and rule. After telling Gary how to proceed, the billionaire continued to enjoy his wine without a worry in the world. He was the ultimate enforcer, he knew so and loved it. Gary did as he was told, came back into the room,
!3
and stood quietly. He was embarrassed because Summer witnessed all of this and therefore just stood there silently. He waited for Mr. Brill to tell him exactly what to do next. The billionaire asked him why he was acting so crazy…like an old fool. "Mr. Brill, it has returned again," Gary said. "That hard-to-catch, tall creature has returned to the wooded-area of your estate.”
!4
CHAPTER 2 The gardener continued, “You bought this four acre estate seven days ago. Everyday when it got dark, I saw that skinny six foot, evil thing walking around in your woods.” “Did you try to catch this thing or what? Or, were you afraid?” asked the billionaire. “Mr. Brill? I’ve worked on many of your properties for at least the last five years…all over the world. I’ve been jumped by a long-toothed mountain lion and stomped by a seven foot moose.” Mr. Brill laughed, “I almost forgot. That moose was about to kick you out of New Hampshire until I heard you crying like a little baby.” “Sir, I didn’t make a sound. I took that beating like a man,” Gary added. “Taking that silent beating almost got you killed. You were lucky I saw that moose kicking and going crazy. Come to think about it…I actually never saw you…you must have been on your back.” The billionaire continued, “It only took one shot
!5
from my Glock 17 to keep that moose from dragging you up that mountain and leaving your teeth at the bottom of the mountain.” “Ok, I’ll admit that you did something with that one shot. I agree the moose stopped and at least let me keep my wallet, but we both know that bullet didn’t hurt him…not even a little bit.” Gary continued as Summer watched them waste her time. Mr. Brill added, “Are you trying to tell me that big moose took a moment, looked at you, looked at me, looked at my Glock, and then just decided to walk up that mountain to get something to eat?” “Or, maybe you missed,” Gary added. The billionaire laughed and then got back down to learning more about who or what was trespassing on his property. Mr. Brill asked Gary whether he personally saw this thing…whatever it was. “I saw what I saw. I’m not blind, sir!” He told the billionaire that his eyes were wide open and the moon was shining brightly. There was no way that he made a mistake. Mr. Brill asked about the type of form that it was in and the gardener said that it was not a ghost or spirit. It appeared as a tall, thin man or a skinny, two-legged evil animal. Gary said, “Over the last week, I talked to a few of the other landscapers in this part of Coral Springs. All of them have be spooked by this evil thing and believe it can kill you. Everybody said we should leave the dragonfly alone!” “Dragonfly? What? What are you talking about?” Mr. Brill asked. “That’s what they call him or it or whatever that
!6
evil thing is. They say dragonfly, libelula, libellule…” “Great, but does it look like I’m afraid?” the billionaire said. The billionaire called out for his estate manager, told him that he was going for a walk into the woods, and that he was going to return around 10 p.m. The billionaire got his gun from his desk in his library, a clip, and then tucked it under his belt. He returned and looked at his new investigator, Summer. “I’ve only heard stories about your investigative skills. Maybe I’ll get a chance to actually see your work.” Summer explained, “They ain’t stories. I’m the real deal. I’ve been ready to work since yesterday.” “Well…why are you and Gary standing around wasting time. Let’s go find this evil thing in my woods.” Before joining them, Gary quickly asked, “Sir, are you really going to need me this late. By 9:30 p.m., I’m usually eating my rugelach desserts at TooJay’s Restaurant at The Walk over on University Drive. Besides, I’m just an old gardener not a hunter.” Mr. Brill ignored him and answered his question without saying a word. As the three of them walked into the woods, away from the Brill Estate, Summer asked, “You’re actually gonna pay me my full rate to chase a shadow in the woods?” “Does it look like I’m worried about the money?” Summer looked back and saw a very large, three-level mansion with about a million dollars worth of night-time lighting. “Consider this your one and only interview before
!7
I decide to trust you with a more sensitive investigation,” Mr. Brill added. They all walked deeper into the woods behind the large estate. It was dark before, but now deeper inside the thick wooded-area the darkness made it impossible for the three of them to see each other. Mr. Brill walked faster leading the way as Summer and Gary tried to keep up. “Are you two nervous, little kittens planning on finding this evil thing tonight or are the two of you just going to walk slowly holding hands in the dark?” “Her? She ain’t my type, sir. I’m just trying not to break my neck or my leg. Uh… by the way, I can’t see nothing now! Where is everyone?” “Ok, that’s me you’re touching and I ain’t into no tired old gardener with tools that don’t work. Now, let me get back to watching everyone’s back and making sure no one is creeping up your skirts,” snapped Summer. “I guess we’re not planning on a surprise attack with all of this loud talking,” the billionaire whispered loudly. It was such a dark and quiet night. It was a great night for two passionate lovers, but was not so great for hunting down evil animals in the dark. The thick, dark wooded area was not that far away from the main house. The billionaire’s entire property was about four acres in total. It took fifteen or twenty minutes to walk the more wooded part of his small forest. There was really nothing at all scary about the billionaire’s property. There were three other large estates close to his estate. All four properties were covered with trees, but all four estate homes shared a
!8
small, open grassy area with no trees and no bushes. The night-time sky was scattered with thick, smokecolored clouds. Sometimes the clouds covered the bright moonlight and prevented them from seeing the small, open grassy area and the edge of the billionaire’s small forest. “What in the world was that? Sir, did you see that?” whispered Gary. Mr. Brill looked back towards towards Gary and Summer, but he was not able to see them. It was too dark. He continued to quickly walk ahead until the moonlight helped him to better see his gardener and the investigator. Mr. Brill turned around again and whispered, “See what? Wait a second? Gary. You’re not even wearing your glasses? Please tell me. What could you have possibly seen?! Before you say anything else, put your glasses on!” “I’m not sure if I have them. You rushed me out of the house so quickly and I have not eaten my dessert…just a second, let me think…maybe they’re on the table in the main house or on the wheel barrel next to that dead rat I buried,” whispered Gary. “What rat? You did not tell me about any dead rat? Great. Several million dollars spent on a luxury estate with…did you say rat or rats? How many, exactly?” Mr. Brill demanded. “Oh, it was only one, sir.” “Only one. I guess I’m supposed to be happy…what’s the score? Minus several million dollars…plus one dead rat? Great!” “Mr. Brill, I really did see something up ahead.
!9
Right up there at the edge of the woods,” Gary added. The billionaire ignored the gardener and asked Summer, “What about you, Mr. Sum-ner? Did you see anything while you were watching our backs and our skirts?” Gary quickly whispered, “Sir, I know she didn’t see nothing. She’s still wearing those stupid mirroredsunglasses. In the dark.” The billionaire looked back at Gary and Summer again. It was so dark he was not able to see anyone or anything except for a pair of mirrored-sunglasses that reflected the moonlight every few steps. The billionaire turned around and said to himself, “I’m actually paying for all of this expert help?” “Sir, did you say ‘paying’? I was just about to ask you about ‘pay’. I’m just a gardener, but now I’m doing a little extra. You know. Some hunting and investigating. Can I get some of that full rate she’s getting on top of my gardening pay? Hey Summer, how much did you say you were getting?” whispered Gary. Summer tried to look into Gary’s eyes in the dark and whispered loudly, “I didn’t say, Gary! To answer your question Mr. Brill, no. I didn’t see anything, but thanks to me…at least none of us have been attacked from behind. I’m always carrying!” Gary snapped back, “I already said you didn’t see nothing. Of course you didn’t see nothing. But I saw that tall, skinny two-legged evil animal disappear into that small, open grassy area. Right up there, just ahead us.” The three hunters walked out of the woods and
!10
into the clear open field. The moonlight helped everyone see that the open area was actually a small hill. It was higher than the forest that surrounded it. As the moonlight glowed more brightly and they continued to walk up the small hilly area, the billionaire turned around again and looked at Gary and Summer. Mr. Brill stopped for a moment and saw Summer still wearing her mirrored-sunglasses. He also noticed Gary’s thick, heavy glasses were on top of his head. Mr. Brill pointed at Summer. “You. Take those stupid glasses off.” He pointed at Gary’s head and said, “You. Put those stupid, thick glasses on.” Gary quickly took his glasses off the top of his head, put them on, and looked at Summer. “I saw what I saw. You didn’t see nothing. You’re as blind as a new born baby. Give me a break, sunglasses in a dark forest. At night.” Summer took off her mirrored-sunglasses, looked at Gary, and said, “I see exactly the same with these or without them. Either way I can see better than you can!” Mr. Brill turned around slowly, walked up the little hill, and whispered to himself, “I’m thinking about shooting. Yes. I’m sure. We better find something out here. A Bigfoot. A skunk ape. Something, because I’m going to shoot somebody or something. Nobody is getting paid. Everyone is getting fired or shot ‘where the sun don’t shine’. Not killed, just shot. Trust me, you will feel it and you will not be sitting for months. Nobody’s dying, but just enough so you remember!” The billionaire walked near the top of the small hill. He noticed the ground and grass under his feet
!11
felt very different. “Gary, come up here and step on this ground. Right around here and over there. When was the last time you cut the grass and did some landscaping in this area?” Gary walked up next to Mr. Brill and began to stomp around. Gary answered, “Sir? Let me think. Uh. Never. I’ve never cut the grass out here. Nope.” Gary took a deep breath. He looked around at the grassy hill and the thick trees that surrounded them. He began, “You just got this property about six days ago. There are about four estates that share this open area. Four acres touch and stretch out from this small grassy hill. I just wasn’t sure who owned it. Sir.” Summer began to search the ground with her hands. Her fingers touched every blade of grass. “Gentlemen. The grass is not real. The grass is not real grass. None of it is real. The grass is fake,” Summer whispered. She put her mirrored-sunglasses back on and pulled her hat down closer to her glasses.
!12
CHAPTER 3 Mr. Brill looked at his gardener and whispered, “Did you, at least, walk around up here? In the last six days?” Gary scratched under his arm, took his glasses off, and started to clean his glasses with the bottom of his shirt, “Well. I didn’t plan on cutting none of this grass out here. So. No need to walk on none of it. So. No. No, I didn’t walk around up here. For what? Don’t cut. Don’t walk. That’s what I always say. Sir.” Mr. Brill looked at Gary for a long time, but did not speak. With a soft voice, Summer said, “Gentleman. Could the two of you please move both of your big feet out of the way so I can continue with my investigation? Or, maybe you guys prefer to look into each others eyes all night. Under this soft moonlight. On this hill. With fake grass. I can sit here and watch you two love birds if you want. As long as I’m getting paid.” The billionaire and Gary looked at Summer for a
!13
few moments and finally moved out of her way just as she found a door handle hidden under the fake grass. Summer pulled on the door handle with very little effort and opened a very big door that was covered with fake grass. “See. See. See that. I told you. See!” Gary whispered loudly with his glasses in his hand. Summer looked into the dark, wide opening and shouted, “Wow!” The billionaire began, “See. See what? You can’t see anything. Put your big glasses on!” Mr. Brill said to Gary as he turned his head and looked at Summer, “Wow? Wow, what? Take those dumb, mirrored-sunglasses off.” The gardener put his glasses on, pointed down into the opening, and said, “Sir. I’m telling you. That tall, skinny two-legged evil animal is down there. In that dark hole.” The large opening was not natural. It was not a cave. It was not a hole in the ground. It was very detailed. It was put together by someone or something very smart and very skilled. “Now we are going to find out if you really did see something Gary. Maybe you can see without your glasses,” the billionaire said. Summer pulled out her iPhone, quickly pressed the flashlight button, and aimed the bright light down into the big, dark opening. “You had that big spotlight in your pocket all this time? We could have used it back there in that dark forest where I almost broke my neck!” Gary shouted. The bright light made it very easy for all of them to see only the first five steps. After those first few
!14
steps down into the large opening, it was pure darkness. Summer took a few steps forward and started to step down into the unknown darkness just as Mr. Brill said, “Hold it there Mr. Sum-ner. We wouldn’t want you to break one of your Jimmy Choo high-heeled shoes, now would we, little lady?” The billionaire looked at Gary. Mr. Brill expected Gary to climb down into the darkness! “Sir? Hold it a second, sir. Remember that moose attack up in New Hampshire. I have not been good at walking down steps since then. Especially dark steps. Going down into a dark hole. Besides, I’m just an old gardner,” Gary whispered as he stepped back away from the large opening. “Sometimes I imagine how I might die one day… many years from now. For some reason, I never imagined dying in a dark hole with a billionaire and an over-priced investigator wearing mirrored-sunglasses,” Gary added. From deep, down inside the darkness and beyond the glow of the bright flashlight, they heard something or someone moving or walking around. “Uh, sir. You still got that Glock, right?” whispered Gary as he and Summer stepped back some more. “Sure do! Now, that’s what I am talking about! I heard that!” shouted Mr. Brill.
!15
CHAPTER 4 The billionaire pulled out his Glock and pointed it down into the darkness of the big opening and yelled, “I am Mr. Brock W. Brill and you are trespassing on the Brill Estate. You have less than five seconds to crawl out of that dirty hole before I start shooting first and asking questions next week! ONE…THREE, FOUR!” Mr. Brill started to pull the trigger when someone from down below within the darkness yelled out and begged the billionaire not to shoot. It sounded like the voice of a really old man. The three looked at one another, smiled, and laughed quietly. As Mr. Brill looked down into the big, dark opening again, he shouted at the old man. He told him to move faster or he was going to shoot. To make sure the old man understood all of this was very serious, the billionaire took the gun clip from his back pocket and pushed it into his gun. He made sure the whole forest heard the sound of that Glock being loaded.
!16
The old man down in the hole must have heard that the gun was truly loaded and he took that new information seriously. Everyone heard the old man. He struggled. He breathed heavy. He crawled. He fell. His old legs and arms took him through the darkness as fast as possible. After a short while a tall, skinny person appeared. The person walked or climbed what sounded like fifteen or twenty feet. Mr. Brill, Gary, and Summer were very curious to know what the old man was doing inside there, deep within that hill. “No smart person would hide alone in this kind of deep darkness,” Gary whispered. They thought that this person was a mentallychallenged patient or some escaped-prisoner. Through the darkness and moments of moonlight, they saw a little bit more of the stranger. Soon it became clear they were actually dealing with a very, very old woman, about six feet three inches tall at the least.
!17
CHAPTER 5 What was thought to be a tall, skinny two-legged evil animal was actually an old woman. She was easily 85 or 90 years old. The old woman’s body was thin and her bones seemed easily breakable. Her face was dry with deep lines and thick wrinkles. With her wild, gray hair and crazy eyes, she walked to Mr. Brill and stood almost eye-to-eye with him. She shouted in the billionaire’s face and looked at all of them, “Why are you treating me like a criminal while I am working hard with the love of my life to change the world for the better?” Mr. Brill responded with so much force and power, something that was different than the way he acted earlier…like a train moving at 200 miles per hour. “Look here old lady…you better explain what you are doing out here in the dark and you better start talking fast!”
!18
The billionaire was not moved or impressed by her age, words, or actions. He told the old woman to prove that she was honest with a good reason for being there. “You have about two more seconds or I will have you arrested by the Coral Springs Police Department… immediately!” The old woman was not happy. She jumped with anger and had a big problem with how she was being treated. “You do not have the right to speak to me like I am nothing. There is always a better way.” The billionaire was getting deadly serious now, and even though he was now impressed by the old woman’s courage, he told her that the punishment would come if she did not provide a good explanation as to what she was doing in that hidden-opening alone at night. He reminded her that he was Mr. Brock W. Brill and he was friends with the police chief and mayor of Coral Springs. For the last time, Mr. Brill told the old woman to use her brain since she was outnumbered. It was better for her to be peaceful and explain herself before they called the police. “What I’m doing out here is none of your business and you would not understand anyway,” the old woman continued. She added, “Don’t ask me anymore questions!” Mr. Brill then ordered her to march forward. He used force and grabbed her by her thin arm. He told her that she was going to spend the night in prison. He looked at Summer and continued, “Get this old lady through the woods and up to
!19
the front of my property so the police can jail her.” Gary looked at Summer and said, “You sure you can handle that 100 year old dinosaur? She looks a little too tough for you!” As Summer put her hand on the old lady’s arm, she twisted and tried to free herself. For the next few minutes, she tried to bite anyone that touched her. Finally, Summer tried to grab the woman’s thin arm again, but she twisted again and fell towards Gary. Then Gary fell into Mr. Brill and all four of them rolled down the grassy hill…together. Mr. Brill was furious. Gary thought it was kind of funny and Summer was at a loss for words. She did not know what to say or what to do next. The old woman quickly became weak. She did not have the strength to fight all of them. She gave up and promised to act right. This time she was more calm with her words. Mr. Brill relaxed a little bit and told the old woman to walk in front of them, through the woods, and up to the house. So on that night, on February the 15th, the billionaire caught the unknown, two-legged evil animal. The mysterious one everybody called the dragonfly. The three hunters learned that it was nothing more than an old woman hiding under a grassy hill. When they reached the billionaire’s estate with their old prisoner, the police department was contacted and the old woman was taken away. After the police car drove away from the Brill Estate, the gardener and the investigator prepared to go home for the night. As Summer walked to her car, the billionaire said, “Do not call me. Mr. Sum-ner. We will call you.”
!20
Summer continued walking, got into her car without responding or turning around, and drove away from the Brill Estate.
!21
CHAPTER 6 A week later, at around nine o’clock in the morning, Summer was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean near the pier at the end of Commercial Boulevard. Later, she decided to catch a quick bite to eat at the world famous Aruba Beach Cafe which was steps away from her morning swim. Around one o’clock in the afternoon, Summer decided to drive over to the police department and discover what happened to the old woman after her arrest. Summer was friends with a detective there. He always gave her a little inside information. “Summer Pinkerton! Awesome to see you. How is everything? Your mom? Pinky? We go way back!” the detective began. “Everything’s great. As for my Mom? You know how that is!” “Old Pinky Pinkerton is tough…I guess that’s why you have that strong personality. Like mother like daughter… that’s what they say,” the detective added. “What brings you way out west? You still in
!22
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea?” continued the detective. “Yes, living near the beach is amazing. I also love exploring the Florida Everglades. I wouldn’t give up the Everglades or the beach for anything in the world. Anyway, I wanted to know whatever happened to that old woman that was arrested for trespassing on the Brill Estate?” asked Summer. The detective replied, “I just got most of the story late last night. I was on vacation and a few of the other officers told me. It’s kind of sad. Crazy, right?” “Sad? Crazy? What? What are you talking about?” “That woman that was arrested late that night…she’s dead. When they checked on her in the morning, she was unresponsive. They tried to revive her. Paramedics were called in, but she was pronounced dead a few moments later that morning.” said the detective. “What? That’s crazy. That’s unbelievable.” The detective added, “Later on, I heard different stories. One said the prisoner was hanging from the bars by a bed sheet. Another said that she was still moving in the morning when they found her…while there are those who said that she was already dead. I’m not sure what happened. I was on vacation.” Summer refused to believe that the old woman died. She walked away from the detective without saying another word. The detective continued, “Hey, Summer. You ok? What’s wrong? Ok, tell your mom I said hi. Hey, they’re burying that old woman. 2 p.m. over at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery.”
!23
CHAPTER 7 Summer got into her red, convertible Volkswagen Beetle and drove directly to the cemetery. She finally found the burial spot of the old woman after driving around the cemetery for ten minutes. When Summer drove up, the cemetery staff was just putting her in the ground and finishing up. Summer waited in her car for an hour to see if anyone showed up to pay their last respects to the old woman. Nobody showed up. With that, it was all over. Summer decided to drive by the Brill Estate. As she arrived, a gardener was doing some landscaping at the front of the estate. It was Gary…he was on his hands and knees…his glasses were on top of his head. Summer drove up next to him and shouted, “You sure you can see what you’re doing old, blind man?” “You don’t have to shout, Mister. I can hear. I can see too. Does it look like I’m blind? Look at this beautiful landscaping!” Gary said without looking up. After looking up at the driver with the mirroredsunglasses, he continued, “Oh, it’s you…and your
!24
dumb glasses. Well…I guess glasses ain’t so dumb now in all this bright sunlight.” “What you doing way out here? You came back for some more investigative work after that old woman pushed you and Mr. Brill off her hill that night?” asked Gary. “The way I remember it…when I looked around, you were laying at the bottom of that hill looking just as dumb as the rest of us,” Summer snapped back. “Well…Mr. Brill is not here,” Gary added as he put his glasses on. “So what! I’ll meet you around back. I’m going to go and park,” Summer said as she backed up and quickly pulled into the long driveway leading into the Brill Estate. “Hey! Wait a second speedy,” the gardener jumped up and yelled. Gary got up, put his hand on his back, and limped up the driveway as fast as he possible. He tried to stop Summer. Gary reached Summer’s car. He held his chest and gasped for air. She screamed, “Why didn’t you tell me the old lady died?” “Now, wait a minute! Me? Why in the world would I tell you? I don’t even know you or have your phone number Mr. Sum-ner. Did that old lady have something to do with your investigation?” asked Gary. Summer looked at the gardener like he was crazy. “Whatever! So, what did you hear anyway?” “Nothing really. I didn’t hear nothing about nothing. Don’t drag me into nothing. According to you, I’m just an old gardener with tools that don’t work. Besides, it’s time for my lunch anyway.” “Come on….come on…with those cute big ears,
!25
I know you heard something.” Gary rubbed his ears and then took his glasses off, “Well, let me think for a moment.” “Come on….come on…you, I know you got memory like a flash drive.” “Like a what?” “Never mind, just tell me…what’s the big deal?” The gardener whispered, “Ok, you didn’t hear this from me. Don’t get me fired Sum-ner. If you do, be prepared to live with a blind, old, and unemployed gardener. I snore and I ain’t sleeping on no sofa with my bad back. I hope you like sleeping on the left side of the bed, because I can only fall asleep on the right side of the bed.” “Are you going to tell me today or what? Come on…” The gardener finally continued, “Well…’somebody’ paid to have the old lady buried at Queen of Heaven Cemetery over in North Lauderdale.” “Somebody? Like who…Mr. Brill?” “You know…’somebody’…I’m not saying no names…so forget any names!” “Ok, ok, ok, ‘somebody’ like Mr. Brill paid to have the old woman buried.” “I didn’t say ‘Mr. Brill’…you did.” “Whatever, what else? Come on…we don’t have all day. I want to see the inside of that grassy hill while it’s still daylight.” “What? What did you just say? Go see what? Now wait just a minute! My boss didn’t say anything about taking you or anybody else back out to that grassy hill. As a matter of fact, nobody has been back out there to see anything. The other landscapers in the neighborhood are still afraid of that grassy hill area
!26
and the one they call ‘dragonfly’…they are all more afraid now because they heard the poor thing died.” “What?! Afraid of what? Nobody was curious about what was hidden under that grassy hill by that old woman who all of a sudden died? Are you trying to tell me Mr. Brill never went back out or sent anyone out there to have a look?” “All I’m saying is…at this point, nobody knows nothing and nobody did nothing.” “You’re not interested? You’re not wondering who that old woman was? What she was doing under a grassy hill? Covered by fake grass? A fake door? At night?” Summer continued, “It’s impossible for you to be ok with all of this coming to an end after the old lady died without explanation. Did she kill herself ? Did somebody kill her?” “I’m perfectly ok…unlike you, the concerned investigator. The last time I wondered about some woman and got all interested in her…I ended up married and then divorced. That old lady was not worried about me so I ain’t worried about her.” “Whatever, just follow me out to the grassy hill and let me know if the big boss is coming. Can you do that…at least?” “No! I ain’t doing nothing and I ain’t going nowhere with you. But, I do have some landscaping to do at the edge of the woods…near that grassy hill.” “That’s good enough. Just make sure you’re wearing your glasses so you can see if I’m in trouble or if Mr. Brill shows up.” “You know…you’re not an easy person to like. Are you finished wasting my time and noticing where my glasses are? Because, I’ve got lots of work to do.”

Summer and Gary went their separate ways around the Brill Estate and through the woods, but ended up near each other at the edge of the forest…near the bottom of the grassy hill.

CHAPTER 8 Gary started to do some landscaping work at the edge of the woods while Summer walked up the grassy hill and opened the secret door into the hill that was covered with fake grass. When the bright sunlight filled the large, dark hole in the side of the grassy hill, Summer did not believe what she saw. She was frozen. She stopped and just looked without moving at all. Gary watched Summer from the bottom of the hill and the edge of the woods. Every three minutes he pulled some weeds and kicked some dirt around. Finally, he noticed something different with Summer’s actions. Gary saw Summer just standing there without moving and without speaking, but it was not possible for him to see exactly what she saw inside the hill. He did not want to see what she saw! After a few minutes, Summer moved closer and closer… slowly. She was trying to explain in her head what she saw with her eyes. She took off her

mirrored-sunglasses. “What? What is this? It’s so beautiful. It’s changing colors as I move and as the sunlight hits it,” Summer whispered to herself. As Summer got closer, she noticed it looked like something an amazing artist created. It was art, but at the same time it was a machine. It was both a machine and a work of art. What was it? It was something put together by someone very smart, very skilled, and very advanced. Whatever it was, it was in the shape of two, big eyes or half-circles. Each eye was the size of a small car. Summer moved closer and began to touch this large work of art, she noticed that each of the big eyes were made up of hundreds and thousands and thousands of little eyes. She moved her hands and fingers over one of the big eyes, Summer felt each was a single piece connected to each of the other thousands of pieces. When she actually looked at each single piece, she saw it was a combination of jewels. Jewels and shiny stones connected to each other. Summer stopped again for a few minutes. She refused to continue. So many different emotions came over her at the same time. She was curious, happy, and surprised. At the same time, she was angry and shocked. But, why? She did not understand. As she looked into those two, big eyes, Summer saw through them. There was more behind each of the eyes. Summer moved inside deeper and walked around the large eyes and discovered that the eyes were part of a bigger design.
!30
The eyes were connected to something like a head and the head was connected to something like a body. Summer continued to try to make herself understand what she saw. Summer touched the head and the body. It was cool to the touch. It was black in color. It looked like it was made of black stone and shaped into a head and body. It looked like, it looked like something…something like an insect. Like a dragonfly? Summer still did not understand what she saw. Summer walked to the back of the body and saw an easy way to walk into the body and head of the large design. As she walked into this work of art, she stepped on something with her foot.

CHAPTER 9 Summer looked down at the ground and found a piece of paper with writing on it. Summer picked up the paper and discovered it was page three of a hand-written letter. The hand-writing was unbelievably beautiful. Summer read the letter out loud… ____________________ When I was 20 years old, I saw my first dragonfly while vacationing in the Florida Everglades. As I looked closely at the dragonfly’s eyes, I could not believe how different their eyes were from my own eyes. why!
I always wondered why. So, I decided to learn more and find out The first thing I learned was that we humans have simple
!32
eyes and dragonflies have compound eyes. The second thing I learned was that dragonflies have been around for over 300 million years…before dinosaurs. So, I wondered to myself, ‘What would it be like to see like a dragonfly? What have these dragonflies been seeing for millions and millions of years?’ I made it my life-long journey to create a machine that would help us humans see the world the way a dragonfly sees the world. This journey has been the love of my life. I have been in love with this forever. After 60 years of mistakes and wrong combinations, I have finally made a machine that sees like a dragonfly sees. Year, after year, after year, after year…for more than 60 years, I have tried many different combinations and types of glass, plastics, minerals, and jewels. Finally, I created two compound eyes made up of a total of 30,000 different, little eyes. Each one of the 30,000 different eyes is made up of a special combination of ammolite, amber, opal, and pearl. The head and body of my machine are made of solid, hand-cut onyx. When one looks through my model of a dragonfly’s eyes, one will see a picture of the world with amazing and unbelievably highdefinition.

No one has ever seen the world like this before…with this invention, our world will now be changed for the better. Words cannot explain what you will see, but let me try to explain with a few words… For example, one is able to see colors never seen before, light never seen before, and air-particles we can’t see with our own, human eyes. One of the more unexpected benefits: When you view the world through my dragonfly eye machine, anything that moves very fast is automatically seen in super, slow-motion…in real-time. Imagine that! The health-care industry, science community, business community, and the military-defense community, will all benefit from this invention. I am looking forward to finally scheduling the first demonstration with you as soon as possible. I am so happy I have lived to see my dream come true and to be able to introduce the world to the love of my life…my life’s work. We are going to have so much fun! Warm regards, The Dragonfly’s Daughter P.S. When we meet, I will tell you my real name and you can learn more about me and my invention techniques. For fun,
!34
I have always used the name “Dragonfly’s Daughter” as my nickname. Over the last sixty years, it helped me keep my focus on making sure my invention was successful. ____________________ After Summer read those words out loud, she slowly put the hand-written letter into her pocket and slowly walked into the body of the dragonfly machine. She put her head into the machine’s head and looked out into the world through the two, large eyes of the dragonfly machine for the first time. Summer jumped back. She did not believe what she saw. Her eyes slowly filled with tears. She made sure she did not cry, but for some reason it was hard not to cry. She wanted to take another look, but she did not. Summer backed away and walked quickly onto the grassy hill into the hot sun. Gary stood up and watched her…he wondered what happened. Summer closed the door that held the dragonfly machine. She continued to hold back her tears and just refused to let herself cry. Once again, so many different emotions ran through every part of her soul. Summer ran away. Fast. She did not look at the gardener. She ran by him and through the woods. She ran until she got to her car. After getting in the car, she wasted no time and quickly drove away.
!35
CHAPTER 10 After running away from that grassy hill behind the Brill Estate, Summer drove for about twenty minutes just listening to the wind go by. She did not think about anything. Finally, she arrived at the cemetery where one of the most unbelievable woman was buried without attention, without fame, without glory, without honor, without notice, without praise, without recognition. Summer began to cry as she sat down beside the woman’s final resting place. “Where should I begin? Your life, your dream, your love, your romance, your gift to the world, each was murdered by me. I have blood on my hands.” “That night. On the hill. I watched. The embarrassment. The frustration. The humiliation. The sadness. The suffering. The disrespect. I watched all of it and I did nothing to stop it.” As Summer painfully searched her soul for more words to describe the horror of her actions against a fallen angel, her eyes continued to fill with more tears
!36
of shame…until the tear drops overflowed one by one…softly falling down below where the angel rested. “As if that were not enough. I joined in. With my own hands. I used an angry, physical force. With no restraint. With no love. With no regret. With no compassion. With no remorse. With no guilt. With no hope.” “I could have defended you. I should have defended you. It was within my power to say something. Do something. To stop it all. But, I did nothing. I failed. I failed you. I failed me.” As her body trembled, her lips trembled. She slowly took a deep breath and whispered, “In your letter, you say you first saw a dragonfly in the Florida Everglades…that’s what we had in common…a place I love…the Everglades…a river of grass…made up of so many single, blades of grass.” “To me, your beautiful genius was like a single blade of grass hidden among a river of grass. I made no effort to see your individual genius…that one blade of grass. I only stomped upon your life-long romance like it was nothing and for that I am truly sorry.”
