By the waters of Babylon
Who is the young man?
On page 13, the last section, he sings his death song, where he starts out with: "My name is John, son of John."
John is a son of a priest, he is living with his parents and brothers (his siblings are hunters).
He can read old writings, which make him happy – like a fire in his heart.
He is a member of the Hill People, which is a very religious people, they believe in enchantments and spells, they are civilized, unlike the forest people.
What does he expect will happen at the Place of the Gods?
The priests in the settlement said there would be fogs and enchantments. And that was the main reason why it was forbidden to go there.
He expected there to be the ashes of the Great Burning, evil spirits and demons.
He expected the ground to burn his feet, and expected there to be a poisonous fog.
As he slowly discovers the whole place, he realizes that the tales were not true.
What does he find?
That the tales were not true, buildingswere not broken neither were the 'God Roads'.
He finds a carved stone with cut letters, the stone was cut in half. The letters were written in English and said URTREAS and there were a shattered picture of a god which name is ASHING.
The name ASHING is believed to be WASHINGTON, G. Washington, which is a former president of the USA.
The name UBTREAS is believed to be a sub-treasury building, maybe the Federal Hall, because at the Federal Hall there is a statue of G. Washington.
What does he learn from his journey?
He learned that the gods were like him, everyday people. And not to tell his discovery, as people could die from too much of the truth – as his father said (page 22 line 9-11): "Truth is a hard deer to hunt. If you eat too much of it, you may die". What he meant is that his newly acquired knowledge should not be revealed one big speech, but rather in small histories about what he saw in the Gods Place.
