EDITORIAL Dear friends, Welcome to 2017, the year marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Eduard Model Accessories Ltd! 2016 is two days gone and we will remember it – I hope – in a positive light. Although we were unable to fulfil every one of our goals, 2016 brought lot of positives that will bear fruit in years yet to come. Among all of the new things from the past year, I especially appreciate the new Steelbelts line, which has crossed the
First and foremost, that would be the SE.5a in 1/48 scale, which is – with respect to tools and moulds – practically ready. During December, 2016 we tested and almost completely finetuned the tools and over next week will submit the instructions and boxes to the print shop for the very first edition of this kit, which is the ProfiPACK edition of the SE.5a with the Wolseley Viper engine. Decals are printed,

line into the realm of innovative products with significant impact on other types. This year we are going to evolve the technology of combining steel etching and colour printing as one of the most significant innovations for the first half of the year in photo-etch production. For this we are going to integrate a new generation printing machine that works with new ink and operates utilising new techniques. This will have a very positive impact on the elimination of raster, which was often and deservedly criticised in our colour PE sets. We have already been feverishly working on eliminating that byproduct of the process and have managed to relegate criticisms to the ‘rare’ category, and I suspect not because modellers have become less sensitive. The largest investment program for the beginning of this year is related to plastic kit production, specifically, to their tooling. There are plans for significant modernisation of the electro abrasive machine tool. Then, during the second quarter, a new CNC cutter machine will arrive which should bear the brunt of the load of the Eduard tool shop. Fitting of both machines will require also some structural upgrades and we expect a negative impact on timing of projects being prepared for the second and third quarter of the year. However, this change should have a positive impact on final quarter production. Simply put, this all means that I can´t be sure of what will be possible to realize until the end of the year, but at least, I can tell you today what we are preparing. So, what is it that we are working on now? 4

masks are cut, and the PE is etched. This kit will arrive in the shops on March 1st, 2017. This model is nice and I think it well illustrates the path we chose to travel over these past 25 years. BTW.....guess who the author of the boxart is. Your guess can be sent to my e-mail at
[email protected] before midnight on January 5th. The first correct guess will receive from me the very first SE.5a in 1/48 scale by Eduard. This edition, of course, will not be the last boxing of the SE.5a. In May, we are going to release a Royal Class package with two
kits, one with the Wolseley Viper engine and the other with the Hispano Suisa. August will see the ProfiPACK kit with the Hispano Suisa engine. Weekends of both versions will be released in 2018. The SE.5a release will not be affected by those innovations mentioned above, as opposed to other planned items. The next one is the Avia B.534, Series I and II in 1/72 scale. Originally those versions of the Avia B.534 were planned for last year, but we delayed them due to other projects, but now their time is coming as well. The last three anticipated versions will be of improved design and technology compared to the older kits. They will be easier to put together due to a change in the locks of the landing gear assembly and in the wing and tail struts. Significant changes will be visible also on the surface of the model. You may think of those changes as irrelevant, but they aren’t. This model has significant value for our future production development. I expect that the ProfiPACK kit, containing both Series I and II aircraft will be released in the second quarter as a Dual Combo boxing, containing parts for both versions. The Bk.534 will be released in the third quarter as a single kit ProfiPACK. Next up will be the Fw 190A in 1/48 scale. This project will be significantly affected by the planned tool shop innovations, at least for its first versions. The first will be the Fw 190A-4 in a ProfiPACK edition. The A-4 is, together

of them during this year. Besides all new kits, there will also be some reboxings of old favorites, their sub-variants, and a general re-release of sold out items. Right off the bat in January we will be releasing the Messerschmitt Bf 110G-4 in 1/72nd scale with an innovative marking scheme offer. The Weekend line sees the release of the Bf 109G-6 Erla, which is the G-6 version incorporating the characteristics of the Erla production facility in Leipzig. January also will see the reintroduction of the Limited Edition kit ‘MF’, which is the MiG-21MF dedicated to service in the Czechoslovak, Czech and Sloval air forces. This will be followed up by the Bf 109G-2 in February as a Profipack kit, and this in turn will be followed in April by the Bf 109F-2. Staying with the Profipack line, we are also preparing the Fw 190A-8/R2 and Spitfire Mk.IXe, Mk.XVI (Bubbletop) and Mk.VIII in 1/72nd, as well as the Fokker Dr.I. Let’s turn our attention to shows. This year we will be significantly taking part in the organization, most notably in a financial sense, of ModellBrno 2017. This will have no real impact on the flavor of the show, and this will stay in the hands of Misters Vacek and Dospíšil. Our role will be to assure a financial third quarter of 2017. The A-3 will follow, base and to organize the vending part of the and subsequently we will release the Royal show which means that the sale of retail space Class package of the Fw 190 early versions containing the A-3, A-4 and A-5. Then, we will follow up with the A-8, A-6, A-7, and F-8, along with their various sub-variants. I would like to stress that these are a completely new design which has not much common with the old one. That goes for the model concept, as well as for details, both interior and exterior. There are significant changes in the model shape, especially pertaining to the fuselage. It is important to note that these models will be greatly simplified with respect to assembly, and such details as the engine and guns will be covered by the Brassin line, as has become the standard over our last several releases, leaving a simplified and well engineered kit to build. And what next after that? We are intensively working on the Tempest in 1/48 scale, which, in batting order, is right behind the Fw 190A. Actually, we have the design for the Mk.V version ready. The Mk.II and Mk.VI will be finished next year. These two versions will be released in cooperation with Special Hobby. There are also another two 1/72 kits in progress. These are the Fokker D.VII and the MiG-21MF. Both are almost complete in the design stages. Their release depends on the capacity and practical efficiency of our tool shop after the planned innovations. I suspect that there is chance of releasing at least one with the A-3, one of the versions which were not covered by the previous generation of Eduard Focke-Wulfs, and so we are going to begin this new design project with these specific versions. I will not tell you the month of the Fw 190A-4 release, but I estimate the

will be under our direction. We will no doubt be bringing in the institution of the admissions kit, which will certainly not upset anyone. E-day will undergo even bigger changes. The most significant of these will be the venue. Ladies and gentlemen, after ten years in the underground garage at Butovice, E-day is coming back up to the surface! E-day 2017 will be held at the Top Hotel in Prague Chodov, right next to Agrofert. The event will also be a one-day affair. Well, essentially, a one-day affair. There will be no Sunday, but those competing, vending, and modellers in general, will be allowed to come and set up on Friday afternoon to start the festivities, engage in conversation, and perhaps do a little shopping. We have arranged a special rate for those who would like to stay at the hotel, naturally at a discounted rate. This year, it will be well worth keeping an eye on Eduard’s Facebook page. Not that it was up to know a big bore, but this year it will get a makeover. It will continue to receive contributions under the title I’M ON IT!, which garners a large amount of contributors and reaction. For example, the footage and animation of the Brassin Merlin 21/25s for the Mosquito Mk.VI exceeded all expectation. This week we will release a bunch of contributions dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the company. It will fall under the title of YOU KNOW THAT.... and will concern itself with interesting facts about Eduard. We are also preparing instructional videos dedicated to the use of photoetched brass, Brassin, masks and other products. Specifically for the BFC, the first quarter will see the opening up of a section for registered guests with a lightly erotic flavor, but have no fear, these will be mostly reviews, really. And that would be about it for now, dear friends of plastic modelling. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to shorten the introductions to the monthly newsletter and I have just crossed my own set limit by a paragraph. I hope to see you at Prosek, where you will have an opportunity to see our brand-spanking new SE.5a in person. Happy Modelling! Vladimír Šulc
