2. SDI - Leadership Course Standards These standards apply to all SDI Leadership Courses.
Administrative
2.1
Instructors must ensure that all students complete the following forms – for each and every course and specialty the student participates in. They are: 1. “SDI Liability Release and Express Assumption of Risk” Form. 2.
“SDI Medical Statement” Form If a student writes a “yes” to any question in the Medical Statement Form under the section marked “Have you ever had a history of or do you currently have” then the student must provide a written permission from a Licensed Physician before participating in confined or open water training or any course or specialty training.

“Diver Registration” Form (upon completion of the specified program).
4.
“Student Record” Form (must be kept for seven (7) years).
5.
All SDI instructors are required to own their own SDI standards and procedures manual
6.
All Instructor Trainer, IT Staff Instructor, Instructor, Assistant Instructor and Divemaster registration forms must be submitted to headquarters with: a. Copy of final exam answer key b. Approved medical signed by a licensed medical physician with no limitations or restrictions All leadership level exams require a 80% percent or better score on their final exam and 100 percent remediation.

*Notes: 1. Copies of examinations completed online need not be submitted to HQ, with the exception of the student signature page 2. When SDI leadership level courses are conducted consecutively, i.e. DM followed by AI or professional development programs incorporating DM, AI and Instructor level training, instructors must ensure that registration forms for each level of training are submitted and approval is received before the next phase of training is commenced. This ensures that the leadership certification pre-requisites for each level are met.

Accidents / Incident Hopefully you will never have to do this, however, if you, the Member, were involved in an accident or simply witnessed an accident, the “SDI Accident / Incident Report” Form must be completed by you, the member/ witness, and faxed to SDI headquarters immediately after the accident happened.

Equipment A Personal Dive Computer (PDC) must be used during all Confined and Open Water training sessions on
SDI courses.
2.4
Confined Water Training Confined Water Training must be conducted in a swimming pool or a confined body of water with the following conditions: 1. A minimum of approximately three (3) meters / ten (10) feet of visibility. 2. Calm surface conditions. 3 Easy access to depths that allow students to stand with their head above water. 3. Depths that allow skills (as defined in the Confined Water lesson guide) to be adequately demonstrated. 4. Equipment appropriate for the training site. 5. Confined water training sites, other than pools, must be approved by SDI headquarters.

Open Water Training The Instructor, with the following considerations, must carefully choose an Open Water training site: 1. Body of water similar to the regional diving conditions (ocean, lake, etc.). 2. Swimming pools are not considered an open water environment 3. Water clarity 4. Temperature above and below the water 5. Weather conditions 6. Water access 7. Equipment adequate for the conditions 8. Thermal protection appropriate for the condition 9. No dives are to require a decompression stop 10. No dives will be conducted in an overhead environment 11. A complete briefing that includes: a. The Dive site b. Water conditions c. Skills to be performed d. Entry/Exit to be used e. Emergency procedures 12. A complete de-briefing that includes: a. Performance of divers as a whole b. Areas that need improvement c. Environmental observations d. Question and answers

Note: Students wearing Air integrated hose-less computers are not required to carry a submersible pressure gauge.

Required Equipment For All Diving Leaders Unless otherwise noted, the minimum equipment requirements for training by an Instructor, Assistant Instructor and Divemaster is as follows: 1. Mask, Fins and Snorkel 2. Buoyancy compensator with a low-pressure power inflator 3. Regulator with submersible pressure gauge 4. Alternate air sources 5. Weight system 6. Personal Dive Computer 7. Exposure suit adequate for the training conditions 8. Compressed gas cylinder 9. Compass 10. Knife and rescue signal 11. A dive flag (unless in a pool) must be carried in accordance with local laws or regulations, it is recommended that some form of surface support is used
Note: Students wearing Air integrated hose-less computers are not required to carry a submersible pressure gauge.

3. SDI - Divemaster Course 3.1
Introduction This program is designed to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for an individual to lead certified divers in the open water environment.
3.2
Qualifications Of Graduates Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may: 1. Assist an active SDI instructor during approved diving courses provided the activities are similar to the graduate’s prior training. 2. Supervise and conduct dives for certified divers provided the activities are similar to the graduate’s prior training.

Who May Teach Who may teach this course? 1. An active SDI Instructor.
3.4
Student – Instructor Ratio Academic: 1. Unlimited, so long as adequate facility, supplies and time are provided to insure comprehensive and complete training. Confined Water (Swimming pool-like conditions): 2. A maximum of six (6) students per Instructor. Open Water (Ocean, lake, quarry, spring, river or estuary): 3. A maximum of six (6) students per Instructor are allowed. However, it is the instructor’s discretion to reduce this number as conditions dictate.

Student Pre-Requisites The Student must: 1. Be at least eighteen (18) years old, unless otherwise stated. 2. Be certified as an SDI Advanced Diver or equivalent (Advanced certification must include verifiable experience in Deep, Navigation, and Night & Limited visibility specialties). 3. Be certified as a Rescue Diver. 4. Current CPR, First Aid and O² provider (where local law permits) certification (SDI CPROX, CPR1st or CPROX1stAED courses may be combined with the Divemaster program by qualified instructors). 5. Have a current medical examination for diving, signed by a licensed physician.

The Student must: 1. Give a minimum of five (5) briefs/debriefs. 2. Show preparation, planning, and control in dive management and diving activities. 3. Guide a minimum of four (4) dives with varying sites and environmental conditions. Course Structure: 1. SDI allows instructors to structure courses according to the number of students participating and their skill level. Duration: 1. A minimum of forty (40) hours.

Administrative Tasks: 1. Collect the course fees from all the students. 2. Ensure that the students have the required equipment. 3. Communicate the schedule to the students. 4. Have the students complete the Liability Release and Medical history forms. 5. The Instructor must review the Liability Release and Medical Forms before starting on the course. Upon successful completion of the course the Instructor must: 1. Complete and submit the Registration Form. 2. Submit: A. Final exam B. Medical examination and approval for diving without conditions or restrictions.

Skin Diving Skills – Minimum equipment: Mask, Fins, Snorkel and additional equipment as required. A. Swim eight hundred (800) meters with mask, snorkel and fins non-stop without the use of arms in less than 17 minutes. B. Swim four hundred (400) meters on the surface non-stop any stroke, without the use of swimming aids in less than 10 minutes (swim goggles permitted.) Scuba surface bail-out A. With full gear in hand (wearing weight belt if required) and cylinder turned off (but system not purged), descend to approximately two point five (2.5) meters / eight (8) feet B. Turn cylinder on, replace mask, fins, snorkel, and scuba unit I. With equipment on and mask cleared ascend slowly Scuba Skills - minimum equipment: all equipment required for a SDI diving leader. A. In water, transport another diver in full gear at a quick pace for four (4) minutes B. Demonstrate a complete rescue scenario satisfactorily C. Underwater skills with and without a mask D. Surface snorkel swimming in full scuba equipment 100 meters Bring a diver, simulating unconsciousness, up from depth (not greater than 6 meters / 20 feet). At the surface swim them under your own power 100 meters in less than 4 minutes confined water skills: A. preparation and planning B. briefing and debriefing C. group control D. problem recognition and solving E. diving equipment assembly and disassembly F. equipment inspection G. entries H. exits I. proper weighting and buoyancy control J. snorkel regulator clearing K. regulator recovery L. controlled descents and ascents M. underwater swimming N. mask clearing O. buddy system techniques P. weight system removal and replacement Q. out-of-air emergency alternatives R. equipment care and maintenance
Open Water Requirements: 1. Ten (10) open water dives lasting longer than twenty (20) minutes each. 2. Training dives must not exceed forty (40) meter / one hundred thirty (130) feet 3. Demonstrate, to a certified and current SDI instructor in open water, preparation, planning, group control, and problem solving for at least three (3) open water diving activities from the topics outlined below. 4. Students must demonstrate all the skills required in previous courses at Divemaster quality in leadership level equipment. Skills include: A. Preparation and planning B. Briefing and debriefing C. Instructors are required to evaluate all the following skills: Candidate’s ability to: 1. Satisfactorily complete the SDI Divemaster written examination (or online version) with an 80 percent or better score and 100 percent remediation. 2. Complete all water requirements 3. Demonstrate to a certified and current SDI instructor the ability to solve in-water and out-of-water diver problems 4. Demonstrate mature and sound judgment concerning dive planning and execution

4. SDI – Assistant Instructor Course 4.1
Introduction This course is designed to have students gain practical teaching experience with an active SDI instructor.
4.2
Qualifications of Graduates Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may: 1. Teach and Certify students in the Skin Diver course. 2. Conduct the Inactive Diver/Refresher course. 3. Conduct the Knowledge Quest review in the Open Water Scuba Diver course under the guidance of an active instructor. 4. Assist an active SDI instructor during approved diving courses provided the activities are similar to the graduate’s prior training. 5. Supervise and conduct dives for certified divers provided the activities are similar to the graduate’s prior training. 6. Lead dives 3 & 4 of the Open Water diver course under indirect supervision so long as all required skills have been evaluated by the instructor and the student is proficient prior to the start of dives 3 and 4. 7. Teach approved specialties after receiving training in those specialties.

Who May Teach Who may teach this course? 1. An active SDI Instructor.

SDI - Instructor Course (IC) 5.1 Introduction The SDI instructor course is designed to teach current Divemasters or Assistant Instructors the knowledge to safely function as an independent instructor. This program is broken up into two (2) sections, an Instructor Development course (IDC) and an Instructor Evaluation course (IEC).

Hand over the SDI instructor application to the evaluating Instructor Trainer prior to completion of the course. Duration: 1. The minimum number of hours under direct supervision for the SDI-IDC is forty (40) hours 2. The minimum number of hours under direct supervision for the SDI-IEC is ten (10) hours. 3. A minimum of one hundred (100) hours for the entire course. Forty (40) hours from the Divemaster or Assistant Instructor course may be credited at the discretion of the IT or IT Staff Instructor.. Fifty (50) hours of training must occur under the direct supervision of a current Instructor Trainer or IT Staff Instructor.

SDI – Visual Inspection Procedure Instructor Course
7.1
Introduction This course provides the training of visual inspectors to a level whereby they can teach the SDI Visual
Inspection Procedure to others. The course is to teach inspector instructor candidates the proper handling, filling, and inspection techniques including the identification of the various defective conditions that can lead to cylinder rejection or condemnation. A great deal more emphasis is placed on the knowledge base of the instructor candidate than is normally required of a cylinder inspector.

Introduction The SDI IT Staff Instructor course will train candidates to conduct the SDI Instructor Development Course

10. SDI/TDI Instructor Trainer Program 10.1 Introduction International Training’s highest teaching level is the Instructor Trainer rating. The IT rating may be obtained at every level TDI offers but must be earned at each level. For SDI there is only one level of IT that can be obtained.

Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may teach instructor level courses for all approved levels. As an SDI IT, you are an IT at any level you hold an SDI instructor rating for the SDI specialties. Instructor Trainers may staff Instructor Trainer workshops. 11. SDI/TDI – CPROX1st AED Instructor Course 11.1 Introduction This course is a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, emergency Oxygen administration, First Aid, and AED combined into one program. It is designed to teach divers the proper techniques to safely administer CPR, O2, correct First Aid , and utilize an AED in emergency situations. The student will be qualified at the end of this specialty to: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Recognize and evaluate an emergency situation and a victim. Know how to activate or alert the EMS. Be able to provide one (1) person adult CPR, administer the proper First Aid to a non-breathing or injured person, and administer O2 to a breathing or non-breathing person. It is important that the student understand that a re-qualification course is required every two (2) years.

Introduction The SDI/TDI/ERDI Non-Diving Specialty Instructor course is designed to teach members of the SCUBA

Instructors who hold equivalent certifications with another recognized agency, for example first aid instructors, who wish to cross over as a non-diving specialty instructor may do so by applying via current instructor crossover procedures

Graduates of the Non-Diving Specialty Instructor Course may upgrade to other non-diving specialties without completing the full course again. However, all pre-requisites, skill performance and graduation requirements for any additional specialty must be met and it must be conducted by a qualified IT or IT Staff Instructor. Credit for this course from DM or AI level is not available. Credit towards DM, AI or Open Water Instructor from this course is not available.
