Trip to Cracow | 16-18.01.2016 Hello! How about going for a trip together with YFU Poland’s exchange students and volunteers? We would like to warmly invite all inbound students spending their year in the Czech Republic, as well as all volunteers, to take part in our annual trip to one of the most historic cities of Poland, Cracow. It will take place from January 16th to 18th 2016.
Program During the this 3-day trip we will visit some of the most important historical and cultural sites of the city and its surroundings, for example: •
The Mariacki Church – built in the 14th century is the largest and most important churches in Cracow and Poland. Known for its rich and breath-taking artistic interior and particularly, the encrusted wooden altair, carved by Veit Stoss.
•
Sukiennice – the Cloth Hall – said to be the first shopping mall in the world. Nowadays it functions as a market for tourists with all kinds of Polish crafts and souvenirs available there.
•
Cracow Underground – high-tech subterranean museum revealing the city's history amid excavated streets and buildings.
•
Kazimierz District – the centre of Jewish life in Cracow for over 500 years. Today it is Cracow's most exciting district – a vivid, bohemian neighbourhood packed with historical sites, atmospheric cafes and art galleries.
•
Wawel Castle – the residence of our kings, placed on top of a hill is by far one the most important buildings in Poland. A symbol of national pride, hope, self-rule, and fierce patriotism. As some say: “Wawel offers a uniquely Polish version of the British Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey rolled into one.”
•
Auschwitz Concentration Camp – the scene of martyrdom of millions of people during World War II. The largest Nazi concentration camp in German-occupied Europe. Place, where the Nazis were carrying out their genocidal plan of exterminating the whole nations, mainly Jews, Poles and other people of Slavic origins.
This trip is organised as a part of YFU Poland's mid-year orientation. During the seminar part for Polish students, Czech participants will be granted some extra time for experiencing the beauty of Cracow independently.
