EDITORIAL Dear Friends, ModellBrno went off without a hitch and in a party atmosphere and to the delight of all visitors. Between Friday night and today, I have not bumped into anyone who was fundamentally disappointed, if there is such a person, and if there in fact is, they should let themselves be heard or forever hold their peace! In the weeks leading up to the event, we were chastised for commandeering the show and that we were preparing to use the show for our own selfish gains, for which reason the show would never be as good as it once was. I don‘t know just how noticeable Eduard‘s role in ModellBrno was, and I hope it wasn‘t evident at all. That was not our goal. For modelers and visitors alike, our involvement was to manifest itself first and foremost in the admissions kit concept and free admission for BFC members. That worked out, but not to our complete satisfaction, unfortunately. We were not able to ensure free entry of BFC members into the parking lot through the gate. For that, we are sorry, and also hopeful that in two years‘ time, we will able to straighten that problem out, and also to improve the ModellBrno webpage. Certainly, this year‘s ModellBrno showed that the co-operation between Eduard and KPM Brno is a functioning entity, and that this is a good starting off point for us to continue on. After ModellBrno, our participation on the show circuit continues on, with E-day on the horizon. This will see a more significant change than that visible at ModellBrno, beginning with the change of venue to the halls of the Top Hotel in Prague, as well as a reduction of display days to one, but beginning with the night before. This will bring us in line with ModellBrno. These are the biggest changes to the show since 2006. Another relatively large change will be the actualisation of a new E-day webpage, which was tried out in June. You can see it for yourself at www.eday.cz . In the summer, we are getting ready to attend two shows, the IPMS Nationals in Omaha at the end of July, and at the end of August in Pilsen. We will have new items slated for release in August at 4
eduard
both shows, including the 1/72nd scale three-kit THE BOYS ARE BACK, dedicated to Czechoslovak Spitfire Mk.IXs. Pilsen will also see new items for September, and both events will see samples of our new Fw 190A-4 in 1/48, the premiere of which will be at E-day. Let‘s have a look at what‘s new. Most likely, and really not very surprisingly, most of the really good stuff will be found among the model kits. The biggest box can be boasted about by the P-40N Warhawk in 1/32nd scale built around the Hasegawa kit along with our photoetched brass details, masks, resin, Cartograf decals and a poster type reproduction of the boxart by Romain Hugault. There are five marking options for two types of the aircraft and there are resin exhausts and main wheels from our Brassin department. All in all, this collection is significantly richer than was our first attempt at a 1/32nd scale kit in this line, and the price is more in line of what would be expected. We are confident that it will thus have a wider and livelier appeal. If ModellBrno is any indication, the model is being well received. There was a notion expressed by some at ModellBrno that they didn‘t like the boxart. That has led me to, several days ago, put forth the question as to whether or not these comic type artworks are generally preferred over the classic types, or vice-versa. I will appreciate any and all input on this matter. Going forward. In 1/48th scale, we have a ProfiPack Fokker Dr.I with a mix of markings options from previous releases of this kit and with a new boxart in the action style of Piotr Forkasiewicz depicting the final combat of Manfred von Richthofen. Contrary to the first edition of the most famous triplane of all time, this one has a single kit in the box, whereas the first release was a Dual Combo boxing. The second model in 1/48th is the Weekend Edition kit of the Bf 109F-4, with the traditional two marking options and with plastic already familiar from previous releases of this kit. In 1/72nd, we have a ProfiPack edition of the for now last of the B.534s, this time the cannon armed Bk.534 version.
As is well known, it never received the intended cannon armament, but three of these machines in German service were equipped with arresting gear for landing trials for the planned aircraft carrier, the Graf Zeppelin. This, arguably the most intriguing use of an otherwise somewhat peripheral airplane, is the subject of the boxart that realistically depicts a landing of a ‚navalized‘ Bk.534 on a training strip. The kit contains the standard photoetching, masks and decals, the latter covering three German, one Czechoslovak and one Slovak subject. The Weekend line will expand by a Spitfire Mk.VIII in 1/72nd scale in July. There are some surprises to be found among accessory items. These include first and foremost three sets for the Camel from Wingnut Wings in 1/32nd scale, a mask, a set of details and steel seatbelts in the Steelbelts line. These sets are our reaction to a shift in the retail policy at WNW and we are hopeful this will not be the end of it. In 1/32nd, you‘ll also find a P-40N set under the name ‚P-40N Upgrade Set‘ and a set covering Luftwaffe rudder pedals. Due to their small size, this pedal set, as well as the Camel Steelbelts, are being released under the ZOOM label and are almost little kits on their own. Personally, I admire any modeller who uses them, because a small gem is created that ultimately gets sandwhiched into a position where it is tough to see well. Any modeler who goes through that sort of effort and feels the reward is right on in my books! I need to point out three sets in 1/35th. This quantity for AFV kits released in one month has over the past few years become a rarity. Two sets are designed for the Pz.IV Ausf.H from Zvezda and the third is for the Scammell Pioneer SV2S from IBG. In 1/48th, you‘ll find four sets for the Yak-28P from Bobcat, two of which are INFO Eduard - July 2017
ZOOMS, including steel seatbelts. In the ZOOM line there are also seatbelts for the older type SE.5a, which is a response to the criticism that the kit did not have the correct type of belts. Note also set FE845, Luftwaffe Cowling Fasteners containing fasteners for various engine cowls and other accesses for Second World War Luftwaffe aircraft. There are also two sets for the German Type VIIc Submarine from Trumpeter. Here, I would also like to point out set 53196, German U-Boat Flags 1/48, which is a pre-painted steel flag set, as indicated by the set‘s name, with, I think, some very unique characteristics. 1/72nd scale among masks and photoetching is represented by coverage of the Me 262A-1a from Airfix, and several ZOOM sets that includes the fastener set and Soviet Seatbelts from the Second World War, these also being made available in 1/72nd scale, too. Further points of interest can be found among the new Brassin sets. First and perhaps foremost, this includes an 88mm German submarine cannon, a very detailed kit on its own and again intended for the Trumpeter Type VIIc sub. Furthermore in 1/48th scale, you‘ll note the cockpit for the Bf 109F-2 for our Eduard kit
INFO Eduard - July 2017
with an older rendition of the seat, not included in the model. There have been requests to do this. This seat is also being released on its own under the catalogue number 648329. An interesting group of items are the small sets of German FuG16 antennae and Bf 109F/G pitot tubes. Finally, worth noting are the 1/72nd scale wheels for the Airfix Me 262 and the 1/48th scale ones for Tamiya‘s He 219 and the BigSins for Tamiya‘s 1/32nd scale Mosquito FB Mk.VI. On Saturday, July 1st, 2017, we have started our Month of the Trees promotion. If you don‘t know what this entails, this is an event that through the month of July sees the availability of OVERTREES for the majority of our kits from our e-shop at www.eduard.cz .Not for all of our kits, but a good, substantial percentage. For those that missed the opportunity to purchase OVERTREES when they were initially issued, and are typically available for from one to three months, they now have the chance to get them this month. A list of the available OVERTREES can be found in this newsletter. And if you are not sure what OVERTREES are, they are a product that contains just he plastic from a given kit. Also available concurrently
are corresponding photoetched accessories (our ‚OVERLEPT‘ line) and corresponding masks, appropriately enough dubbed ‚Overmasks‘. We may meet in Omaha late this month. Except the already mentioned great 1/72nd scale Limited Edition release Boys are back dedicated to the Czechoslovak Spitfires Mk.IX and their pilots, which is August new, we are going to bring you there some other interesting news, like newly styled color photoetch printed on our new printing machine. Also, the above promised test shots of the Fw 190A-4 would be most probably the complete set of trees, and I expect we will be able to demonstrate the complete kit there. Seeing the at this moment available test shots, the kit looks great. To know more about our new 1/48th Fw 190A family, follow our Facebook profile, where we will bring couple of behind the scenes style posts about the machining and finishing of the tools and testing of the plastic frames. Well, my Friends, I wish you a good read with today‘s newsletter. Happy Modelling! Vladimir Sulc.

BUILT P-40N-5 s/n 42-105128 Lt. P. S. Adair, 89th FS, 80th FG, Nagaghuli, India, February 1944 Philip Adair fought with the 80th FG eighteen months during 1943 and 1944. He flew 139 combat missions in the CBI Theatre of Operations. Probably his most memorable result came on December 13th, 1943, when he took off in defence of his home field against a Japanese raid. The interception of the raid was not only the goal of the 89th FS, but also the 88th FS and the 311th FBG, but Adair was not able to locate his colleagues in the air. He attacked the incoming Japanese bombers alone. On landing, he claimed one Japanese fighter destroyed, with two bombers and a fighter damaged. He did this while flying a P-40N-1, also named ‚Lulu Belle‘, and was awarded the Silver Star for his actions. At the beginning of 1944 Philip Adair was assigned this aircraft, again named ‚Lulu Belle‘. On May 17th, 1944, while attacking ground targets, he was met by fighters identified as Oscars. He shot down two of them. The 204th Setai however claimed no losses, and in fact claimed the shooting down of the entire four ship flight that was led by Adair. Adair flew the P-40N until June 1944, when the unit began to re-equip with the P-47D Thunderbolt.

BUILT 577/17 flown by Lt. R. Klimke, Jasta 27, Halluin – Ost, France, May 1918 As a member of FFA 55, Rudolf Klimke got his first kill on the Russian Front in 1916. In May 1917, flying an Albatros C.VII with FA 19, he conducted a lone night attack on London along with his observer Leon. After being transferred to Kasta 13/KG 3, he served on Gotha bombers. A Sopwith fighter was shot down by the crew of Klimke, Leon and Reintrop over London on June 7th, 1917. After that, Klimke underwent training at Jastaschule I and in September 1917, he was assigned to Jasta 27, where he gradually increased his kill count to eventually reach seventeen on September 21st, 1918. On that day, however, he was seriously wounded by fire coming from an enemy fighter. He managed to land on his own field, but was nearly killed by a bombing of the hospital he was in. He would not return to a combat unit before the war ended.

BUILT 479/17 Lt. A. Raben, Jasta 18, Montingen (Montoy – Flanville now), France, October 1918 After command of Jasta 18 was handed over to August Raben, who previously CO‘d Jasta 11, the appearance of the unit‘s fighters went through some changes. Originally, the noses of the fighters were in red, while the remaining upper and side surfaces were in dark blue. Now, the upper and side surfaces of the front of the aircraft were in red while the rear section including tail were in white. The lower surfaces remained in the factory blue. The sides of the fuselage were painted with a black or white bird which symbolized the CO‘s name, since the translation of Rabe is ‚Raven‘. The original white base colour in the crosses on the upper wing were irregularly overpainted with red after the changes to the national markings were implemented in the spring of 1918.

BUILT Bf 110F-2 Ofw. T. Weissenberger, 6.(Z)/JG 5, Kirkenes, Norway, June 1942 German fighter ace with 208 kills to his credit and holder of the Knight‘s Cross with Oak Leaves Theodor Weissenberger was involved in flying from an early age on gliders. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1936. After completing fighter training, he became an instructor and in 1941 he was assigned to 1.(Z)/ JG 77 (on March 16th, this unit was redesignated 10.(Z)/JG 5). In September 1942 Weissenberger was transferred to 6./JG 5, where he flew single engined Bf 109s. On October 24th, 1944 he took over command of the newly formed I./JG 7, equipped with the Me 262. On January 1st, 1945 he took over the entire JG 7 and remained in this function up to the end of the war. He was killed on June 11, 1950 during an automobile race in Nurnburgring. Weissenberger‘s Bf 110F was sprayed RLM 74/75/76, the standard used to camouflage fighter aircraft. The sides of the fuselage received a heavy and irregular overspray of RLM 74 and 75. The aircraft carries his kills depicted on the tail surfaces and on the nose is the Zerstorer unit‘s of JG 5 emblem, a dachshund with an I-16 in its mouth.

BUILT F6F-3, flown by Lt. Lochridge, VF-38, Guadalcanal, late 1943 The very unusual marking consisting of a white spine and part of the tail was typical for VF-38 Hellcats. Even more rare were pin-up girls on U.S. Navy fighter aircraft. VF-38 was established on June 20th, 1943 and supported the Allied advance through New Georgia and the Solomon islands. The squadron was disbanded on January 31st, 1946.
