EDITORIAL Dear Friends, As usual, I don’t know where to begin, but I’ll start with Airfix, who made us pretty happy with their release of first the Walrus, and then the Mustang immediately after. That was a relief, because if you’ll recall, we began releasing accessories for the Walrus back in August, and for the Mustang in September. Both are interesting types, but of course, it is difficult to sell accessories without the kits for which they are designed being available. There are exceptions to this principle, interestingly, when a photoetched set carried its own weight even without the kit for which it was designed. Near the beginning of our firm‘s activities, we designed a PE set for a short run training version of the Vampire, probably announced by Pegasus. The kit was ultimately never released, but somehow or other, this fact never held the accessory item back, and it was actually a really good seller for a number of years. Who bought them, I don’t know to this day. But with Airfix, it all turned out well. The kits are quite nice, and evidently were developed with care, and if nothing else, their delay shows me that we are not alone who face these types of issues now and then. It’s not that long ago when we were the butt of jokes regarding our Eduard month which lasted typically between six and twelve weeks. This has finally changed, and the Eduard month now coincides with the one on the calendar, and it threw us for a bit of a loop when another manufacturer threw a wrench into our well oiled plans. Nevertheless, moving on, it is with pleasure that I turn your attention over to the accessory items for both the Walrus and the P-51D Mustang. Both collections will be available at Telford at the beginning of November and in Bratislava in, I expect, significant quantities. In relatively quick order, we made a final decision regarding the date and place of next year’s E-day. E-day 2018 will be held at the hall in Lysa nad Labem on Friday, September 28, 2018. I must admit to a certain affinity for this location, and after several meetings with management there, one of which was the occasion of the title photo, proved very promising but only time will really tell, after the experience of the actual event there. It’s a large venue, similar to that
Boxart by Piotr Forkasiewicz, included in kit R0016.

of the previously used garage at Butovice, and the main floor houses two restaurants, with the possibility of adding concession stands, and parking is plentiful and without charge. Our chosen hall, Hall C, has its own entrance coming in from the train station, which might prove very useful for those that visit by train. Lysa nad Labem lies on the main express track and it’s good to note that trains from Prague go there on the half hour from Masaryk Station (Central Prague) as well as from the Main Station. Right now, the uncertainty lies with accommodations, but this will no doubt be resolved. So that’s where that stands, folks, and I look forward to your input! Time to turn our attention to November’s new releases. The most interesting item on offer for this month is the Pe-2 in 1/48th scale, named “PESHKA” in our boxing, the base kit of which hails from Zvezda. This has now been available since Friday on our e-shop as an offer under our regular Edoween sale. In my opinion, this is one of our most significant Limited Edition releases, and we put a lot of effort into its development, from the markings options derived at in co-operation with Begemot, to the resin accessories included which provide conversion pieces allowing for the building of aircraft from Production Block 350 and on. The original kit depicts preceding production blocks. There are five marking options, and care was taken to not duplicate those that were offered by the Zvezda original. The fact that there are no Czechoslovak versions being offered did evoke a certain amount of discontent among the home grown modellers. In order to appease the local patriots, we prepared a decal sheet with two post-war Czechoslovak marking options which we added to the first two hundred kits purchased off of our e-shop. These are basically items being offered under the Edoween sales event. Of course, this also met with its own disfavour, since it has been expressed that these decals should be available to all those that want one, and not to just those that buy the kit to go with them, and only from our e-shop to top it off. I understand the argument, but I don’t fully agree. As you probably know, we really didn’t want to do
any Czechoslovak markings at all because there is a shortage of reference materials concerning the subject, and what there is is difficult to work with, and the answer to the question as to the exact camouflage schemes carried on Czechoslovak Pe-2s is inconclusive at best. This puts us in an uncomfortable position. We also can’t ignore the fact that Czechoslovak Pe-2s will for most modellers be unattractive and even downright boring when compared to their Soviet wartime counterparts, making the pursuit of Czechoslovak decals a waste of time. Nevertheless, we decided it would be a good idea to listen to the hardcore patriots among us, but to satisfy their desire in a way as to bring a little something to us for our efforts. We decided to go about this by making the decals a bonus to make the kit more attractive to the domestic internet market. Those that don’t want to take advantage, don’t have to go that route, and no one has much of a right to complain. Ultimately, the sheet can even be later acquired from someone who has one but doesn’t really want it that badly. There will probably end up being quite a bit of those people. Then there is still the question as to the scheme carried by the Czechoslovak aircraft. We’ve already gotten an earful about how we are late to the ball, because it is well known today that Pe-2s carried a three tone upper scheme, and that a part of the delivery was in a grey one. I don’t know how the experts came to this conclusion, but we had a problem getting even decent pictures of these birds that would shed light on this question. Everywhere I look at what is at our disposal, and all I see are planes painted in a single dark upper colour and a single lighter lower colour. I would be more than happy to offer a three colour scheme to attach to these planes, but sorry experts, I just can’t in good conscience. We see just one colour. Don’t get me wrong; I like experts who concern themselves with camouflage schemes and colours. They are fun to be around, and I enjoy their research abilities and powers of deduction, but there just is not enough bait to take a bite out of this one. As a side note, the latest research calling RLM 83 a naval blue colour is incredible, especially after having been convinced in succession that it was first green, then brown, then that it didn’t exist for a time, and then green again. I hope it will end with this argument. But it probably will go on and on.... And while on the topic of naval colours, it could perhaps even be one of about fifty shades of grey, and ultimately could eventually work its way to some type of a warning shade and to my favourite orange. And that is one no one would be able to convince me of otherwise!
INFO Eduard - November 2017
RLM 83 leads us to the first of November’s ProfiPACK kits, the good old 1/48th scale Fw 190D-9. This incarnation of the kit carries no significant changes from the original, and is really just the return of an old favourite into the catalogue. The only difference form the previous releases is the change from RLM 83 in the camouflage schemes, because we would assume that blue would not have been used. But even so, who knows? We will see what opinions arise regarding the last weeks of the Third Reich. There will be two ProfiPACK kits offered in November. The other will be the 1/72nd scale Spitfire Mk.IXe. This will likely be the last of the 1/72 Spitfire ProfiPACK offerings for some time. With this kit, we have elevated the markings options compared to the 48th scale kit of the same version, and we are hopeful that modelers will be attracted by this feature, and that the boxart by Piotr Forkasiewicz will have the same end result. The latter will also be available as its own item within the EduArt line. The final model kit in the November release schedule is the Avia B.534 III. series in 1/48 as a Weekend kit. The collection of accessory items is livened up by eight sets for the 1/32nd scale Fw 190A8 from Revell. I would like to point out that it is possible to make an Fw 190A-8/R-11 from this kit besides the classic A-8, a fact not lost on the included parts of our sets. Also significant will be the five sets for the Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair, again in 1/32nd. The interior set for this model, which is printed using new technology that was demonstrated at Pilsenkit in Plzen and at E-day at our tables, is worthy of a close look. The new printing is better in its surface finesse that eliminates the often criticised raster effect, and by the clear lenses over the instrument dials. These are printed with a drop of clear varnish type material by the printing machinery. Another photoetched piece that will be printed the same for now experimental way, will be the Royal Class set included with the Fw 190A-2/3/4,
INFO Eduard - November 2017
a part of November’s offerings, and the majority of December’s, although these are still without the aforementioned lenses. After the new year, these will become more and more common in 1/48th and 1/32nd scale kits, and I would not rule out the possibility that this process will be tweaked enough for use in 1/72nd scale items as well. Another interesting theme that I think is worth mentioning are the three sets for the Russian self propelled howitzer MSTA-S from Zvezda in 1/35th. There are also sets for Hasegawa’s Ki-46 Dinah in 1/72nd which are more new sets for older models. We are also preparing a new set for Great Wall Hobby’s new 1/72 F-15E for November. This month will also see the third and last of the sets for the RM Roma in 1/350th and a set of steel flags of the US Navy in the Second World War in 1/700, along with some 1/35 scale German straps and buckles. The Brassins coming out this month are pretty darn nice, too and include a big set for the cockpit to go into Revell’s 1/32nd scale Spitfire Mk.IXc, along with two smaller sets for our 48th Fw 190A-4, and the Airfix P-51D. Then there are a number of the usual weapons sets and to top it all off, the 48th MOAB. This last one is basically a resin kit onto itself of this famous bomb. Because it is resin along with, to a large extent, photoetched, it is really designed for experienced modelers who know their way around bending and assembling brass. We have prepared a small animation to go along with it, and this can be viewed here. I would also recommend the time to go over the BigSins and BigEds, too. And with that, my usual intro to the month’s newsletter is nearing its conclusion, allowing you to go through all the new items, although there might not be much new for those of you that have looked through the offers of our Edoween sale. We will again be represented at Telford, where we will have our table with our wares, including for the Walrus and the Mustang from Airfix, as I mentioned above. The same will
apply to Bratislava at the end of the month. I am planning on attending the show in Bratislava and I will be on hand to answer any and all questions. We will also have with us December’s new items, including the Royal Class boxing of the Fw 190A-2/3/4 (which we have been internally referring to as the A-234) and the L-29 Delfin. By then, you’ll also be able to view some test builds of the A-234, and currently, you can look at the complete markings options on Facebook, and this will be followed by a lot of other relevant postings as well. All in all, there will be no nasty surprises waiting for you if you decide to purchase this package. You’ll know exactly what to expect. The same holds true for the Delfin, and I know that both kits, especially with the Focke-Wulf, though, will more than hold their own! These kits are chock full of modelling goodness, and I personally am in love with the boxart, again by Piotr Forkasiewicz, which I got a hold of just yesterday, and what can I say? It depicts an Fw 190A-4 JABO from III./SKG 10 from Sid Ahmed in Tunisia during a raid on the port of Bona in January, 1943. Check it out! Ladies and gentlemen, I wish a good read with this month’s newsletter! Happy Modelling! Vladimir Sulc PS: Having touched on the subject of events, I would also like to say a few words regarding the participation of our colleague and marketing chief, including the publishing of this e-magazine, Jan Zdiarsky, at the recent USAAF 100th Bomb Group reunion in Washington D.C. His seminar on the historical symposium about 8th USAAF and the 100th BG during the air battle of September 11, 1944, attracted a lot of attention and praise. I am hopeful that more on this will be printed in future newsletters.

BUILT W. Nr. 760, Fw. R. Eisele, 8./JG 2, Brest-Guipavas, France, January 1943 New Focke Wulf Fw 190A-2 aircraft began to entirely replace the older Messerschmitt Bf 109F in III./JG 3, from May 1942. In the August of the same year, the 7th and 9th Staffel already controlled (with Focke-Wulfs) the skies over Dieppe during the British invasion attempt. The 8th Staffel defended Brest harbor against attacks of allied bombers and later also covered the U-boat docks at Lorient and St. Nazaire. Within a year, the unit was re-equipped by modern A-3 and A-4 versions of the Fw 190. One of these new Fw 190A-4s was flown by Rudolf Eisele. The plane wore the standard camo scheme of RLM 74/75/76. On the left side of the engine, the red wolf was applied, being the emblem of 8. Staffel /JG 2. Eight bars on the rudder indicates Eisele´s victories up to January 26th, 1943.

BUILT Oblt. W. Nowotny, CO of 1./JG 54, Staraya Russa, Soviet Union, March 1943
A German fighter pilot of Austrian decent and a native of Gmunde situated near the border with Czechoslovakia, Walter ‚Nowi‘ Nowotny was a holder of the Knight‘s Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, and shot down 258 enemy aircraft over the course of 442 combat sorties. He was killed in an Me 262 Schwalbe in combat with American escort fighters near an airfield at Hesepe on November 8th, 1944. During the winter season, the Luftwaffe on the Eastern front camouflaged their aircraft in white. It was applied either as an entire over-painting of the upper surface, or in the shape of various white patches. The mount of Walter Nowotny wore a camo scheme composed mostly of green and brown colors on the upper side of the wings and of the fuselage, which was then partially overpainted by patches of washable white color. The airplane wore markings for the Eastern Front, consisting of yellow wingtips, including part of the rudder and the fuselage band. In the case of JG 54, this was applied behind the Balkenkreuz. The green heart on the fuselage is the emblem of JG 54. The emblem of I. Gruppe is applied on the engine cowling.
