Mingosu: Christmas Story Sequel, episode 35, “All-Out Robot War!” audio commentary!
[Clapping]
Mingosu: Universe! Hey guys, I played D.J. Valerio and my name is...
TeraKoyasu: GO HOME, GO HOME, GO HOME.
[Laugh]
Mingosu: Hey, come on guys! Let me say my name! Don’t tell me to go home! Anyways, I’m Asami Imai and I played Davina Angkahan-Valerio and Noire.
[Booing]
Mingosu: Guys knock it off.
RieRie: Moving on. My name is Rie Tanaka and I played Charlotte Haywood. GO HOME! GO HOME!
[Cheer]
RieRie: Turn A! Turn A! Ha, I’ll boo myself off stage.
ChanYui: Alrighty then. I’m Yui Ogura and I played Santa Cassano and Yunoha Thrul.
[Cheer]
All: STAY! STAY!
ChanYui: Thank you very much!
TeraKoyasu: And finally. I played Jim Eligino, Mu La Flaga, Zechs Merquise, Asuham Boone and Gym Ghingham, and my name is Takehito Koyasu.
[Cheer]
TeraKoyasu: Furthermore, I’ll introduce the host of this episode who keeps the dialogue going!
ChanYui: Yes!
Fujitsu: My name is Ryota Fujitsu. Thank you everyone.
All: Thank you!
RieRie: This’ll probably be a difficult group to keep it together.
Fujitsu: Yeah, this episode’s commentary will be done by people with seemingly really high attack points...
Mingosu: Attack points!?
TeraKoyasu: We’re so grateful you’re doing this with us.
RieRie: Yeah, this has to be a pretty chaotic group of people.
Mingosu: Yeah, it’ll definitely get out of hand.
1:00
ChanYui: That’s so true.
RieRie: Imai’s so loud.
Mingosu: No way, no way.
TeraKoyasu: No, you just have a loud voice.
Mingosu: The two of you don’t have to gang up on me.
Fujitsu: Right, let’s get started...or at least I want to get started.
All: Okay.
Fujitsu: The opening theme is in the background. So let’s see...Imai-san, I know you’ve been here before for earlier episodes, but...
Mingosu: Yeah.
RieRie: Oh, we should just have her go home then.
Mingosu: Wait, no, hold on there! There’s a lot that someone can gain from re-watching an episode. So please. Let me stay.
Fujitsu: I wanted to ask about how you guys got your roles, and your first impressions of the characters.
TeraKoyasu: How I got the role? How? I mean... are we[voice actors] ever let in on how stuff works?
RieRie: You mean like, auditions?
ChanYui: Ah....
Mingosu: Like auditions, right?
TeraKoyasu: Did you audition?
RieRie: Yeah, I auditioned. It was an audition.
TeraKoyasu: Oh, really?
RieRie: Oh, so Koyasu-san...were you...
ChanYui: Approached with the role?
RieRie: Were you specifically asked to play your role? I knew it!
Mingosu: Of course, Koyasu-san WOULD be asked to play a role!
RieRie: I mean, one of the most popular voice actors, it’s no surprise, but…
Mingosu: Yep, number one. Number one.
RieRie: Imai-kun. You stopped being humble.
2:00
Mingosu: It’s been 15 years. What do you expect?
TeraKoyasu: Wow, has it really been 15 years?
Mingosu: Yeah, it has. It’s been 15 years.
TeraKoyasu: Oh, so...how did you guys get your roles? When you auditioned...Do you audition for the roles that you got?
Mingosu: Just to be clear...I auditioned for Phil.
RieRie: Oh, I didn’t! I auditioned for...that fat person! I forget his name though...
Mingosu: Yanny?
RieRie: Yanny!
[Laugh]
RieRie: I auditioned for Yanny! I remember now.
ChanYui: Kiri-chan?
Mingosu: Right. The character Kiri-chan played.
ChanYui: Oh...I get it.
TeraKoyasu: I didn’t know that.
Mingosu: Yep.
ChanYui: I went for Poe and got it.
TeraKoyasu: You’re an elite.
ChanYui: What? That’s called an elite?
Mingosu: When you get the role that you wanted.
TeraKoyasu: When you get your first choice.
ChanYui: I remember being so nervous though.
RieRie: This was my first time voicing in an anime. Auditions and everything.
Mingosu: Wait, you mean that you’d never worked with anime before?
RieRie: Yeah.
Mingosu: Whaaat.
ChanYui: I didn’t know that.
RieRie: This was my debut role.
TeraKoyasu: What were you before, a salaryman?
RieRie: Salaryman...no way!
ChanYui: Salaryman!
[Laugh]
RieRie: I mean, come on, just look at me. Not that I would know anything [about salarymen], because I don’t, but...I was with an agency until then.
3:00
Mingosu: I never knew.
RieRie: Oh! There!
TeraKoyasu: So you just fluttered in.
ChanYui: There you are.
RieRie: My voice is SO young!
Mingosu: Yeah, it’s almost cute.
RieRie: I’m grossed out! I want to redo it! I want to redo everything!
Mingosu: Should we do it now? I mean...it’ll be a super old sounding Harry, but...
ChanYui: I know, right?
Mingosu: Whoa! That’s high-pitched. Tanaka-san, that’s the youngest you’ve ever sounded.
RieRie: You’re right though.
TeraKoyasu: But like...you had to sound young when you first started out.
ChanYui: I remember you were nervous the first few recordings...
RieRie: Of course I was nervous! Isn’t that normal! It was my anime debut, I couldn’t just be all blerrrggghhh. That would be so weird!
TeraKoyasu: As far as this character goes though...when did you come in?
RieRie: I think around episode 4.
TeraKoyasu: Episode 4? Are you sure it’s not episode 3?
RieRie: Oh, maybe!
Mingosu: I started on episode 4 so...
RieRie: Right, right.
TeraKoyasu: Wait. That means that by this episode you’d been acting a lot for this anime...
RieRie: About a year.
Mingosu: But you still sounded all naive!
ChanYui: Definitely.
TeraKoyasu: Were you not used to it yet?
RieRie: Not at all.
TeraKoyasu: In the studio?
RieRie: No way, no way.
Mingosu: Are you kidding? Just shouting out “Poe,” “Poe”. You were at the center of the studio.
4:00
Mingosu: Just calling out people’s names for practice.
RieRie: “Poe” is an easy one to practice with!
ChanYui: Thanks.
Mingosu: “Poe!” “Poe!”
TeraKoyasu: And you’d be hearing this going on right next to you?
ChanYui: Yeah.
TeraKoyasu: What was that like?
ChanYui: I mean, like...
RieRie: It was like “gosh, this dude is so annoying,” right? “Should I tell him to stop?”
ChanYui: No, no, no, no.
RieRie: “He should just die!”
ChanYui: There’s no way I’d be that extreme!
Fujitsu: Tanaka-san, what was your first impression of Phil?
RieRie: I mean, I had no idea what was going on. I was just like “Oh, I’m not the fat guy?”
ChanYui: Oh, because your character changed.
RieRie: Right. I was like “Oh, I’m not Yanny?”
Fujitsu: As far as your character goes...he rebels, he gets friendly with Poe...it’s a pretty loaded life for your character.
RieRie: Right! He did get touchy feely with Poe!
Mingosu: He did.
ChanYui: Yeah, they did.
Mingosu: It’s romantic, really.
[Laugh]
ChanYui: It did go like that, huh.
RieRie: I mean, that never seeped into our real lives though.
ChanYui: No thanks!
RieRie: But in the work, it’s pretty much only that between the two.
Mingosu: Yeah, in the series, the characters are so close.
Fujitsu: Ogura-san, how did you feel about Poe? What were your first impressions?
5:00
ChanYui: Just looking at the pictures, I could sense that she had to be a really strong female. And at first...I think it was when Phil showed up, I was really shocked when she cried.
Mingosu: She did cry didn’t she?
TeraKoyasu: Right. She cried often, she was called a cry baby.
ChanYui: Yeah, I was a bit shocked when the character had this crybaby nickname in the later half of the series.
Mingosu: But I’ve heard fans say that they were able to relate to her better after she cried.
ChanYui: Yeah. I’ve heard from Tomino-san, that the character was supposed to die a lot earlier in the series.
RieRie: Seriously!?
ChanYui: Yeah, it’s true.
TeraKoyasu: Wait. Why are you happy about this!
[Laugh]
RieRie: No, it’s just I heard this for the first time! Fifteen years later, I find these things out!
Mingosu: My character too. Apparently the character dodged a bullet three times, where he was meant to die, and they didn’t kill him off.
RieRie: Seriously?!
Mingosu: It’s true.
RieRie: Ugh, he should have died!
Mingosu: I wish you didn’t mean it, for my character.
RieRie: But why didn’t he die?
Mingosu: Get over it.
ChanYui: Just...based on how the story unfolded, they changed a lot of plans.
RieRie: Oh, it worked like that.
Mingosu: When she cried, the character was a lot more likable, so she got a bigger role--is what I heard, at least.
ChanYui: Yeah, in Poe’s case. I guess the creators were like “Oh man, we made her cry!” That’s what the director said.
Mingosu: Oh, I just heard a really cool guy talking.
6:00
Mingosu: Yeah, a cool guy’s talking.
RieRie: Yeah, it does sound different.
Fujitsu: Yeah, a really different kind of voice is speaking.
Mingosu: It’s the voice of the number one voice actor.
TeraKoyasu: I mean, this is also 15 years ago though.
RieRie: But it’s really not that much different.
ChanYui: Yeah.
TeraKoyasu: You think so?
RieRie: Yeah, it’s really not that different.
TeraKoyasu: My impression of you back then was that...you did a lot of sharp roles. Were you doing any other roles then that were so...muscular?
TeraKoyasu: It’s not that I hadn’t at all. But...I think it was one of my first ones. You know, playing a character that was so macho.
ChanYui: That’s true. I do recall that you played a lot of thin types...the handsome ones.
TeraKoyasu: I heard that initially the character was meant to be much thinner.
ChanYui: Oh really?
TeraKoyasu: And they were like “Yeah, let’s go with Koyasu-san.” But when they were done designing the character, it came as quite a surprise.
ChanYui: Right, because the character was so muscular...
TeraKoyasu: Exactly. They were like “So this is what we came up with...which is a really thick looking character. But let’s just roll with it.” That’s what I heard later. Who knows how true that is.
ChanYui: Wow, I had no idea.
Fujitsu: So what was your first impression then?
7:00
TeraKoyasu: “What!”
[Laugh]
TeraKoyasu: “No way! I don’t know if I can do this...”
ChanYui: So it was different from anything else you’d played...
TeraKoyasu: It was totally different. I thought that all I’d have to do was mumble.
Mingosu: Yeah, no way. You had to be really loud for this character!
TeraKoyasu: It was just so...
ChanYui: “Gaaaaaah!”
RieRie: You have that famous line though. “Gekkouchou de aru!”
TeraKoyasu: Oh yeah, that one
Mingosu: It’s in this episode.
RieRie: Oh is it this episode?
Fujitsu: Episode 49 does have a lot of famous lines by Ghingham packed in.
ChanYui: I just remember that line “Onooore!” (Why, you little…!). It really made an impact.
Mingosu: Right. Because even in the script, it was all drawn out.
ChanYui: Yeah, not just “Onore.”
TeraKoyasu: I think that typically, even if the script specifies it, voice actors would read it normally. I was a little curious though what would happen if I did it the way it was written.
[Laugh]
TeraKoyasu: And then I was like “Oh, this fits my role.” So I kept it.
RieRie: Tomino-san has some really unique scripts. It always throws you off at first and wonder if it should be read exactly. And it always works out.
8:00
TeraKoyasu: But you know with ‘Sasuga Turn X…’
All: ‘Turn A no oniisan?’
ChanYui: Yeah, that one.
TeraKoyasu: Right. There’s like, NO TIME FOR US TO SPEAK.
[Laugh]
ChanYui: Really?
TeraKoyasu: There’s just no way that you can fit your lines in the pacing! But then they were like “Oh, but this is such a cool line. You have to do it” so I’d force myself in.
ChanYui: I see.
RieRie: What a forceful genius.
TeraKoyasu: I know I’m a genius, but...
ChanYui: Haha, he admitted it.
TeraKoyasu: If your line doesn’t fit, it’d get cut, you know?
Mingosu: Right. It’d be such a shame.
TeraKoyasu: It is! So I just remember being really desperate to fit those lines. And you know, the staff were all so young.
Mingosu: That’s true.
TeraKoyasu: I know that Tanaka-kun said it earlier, but...there were a lot of people who were trying out anime for the first time.
ChanYui: That’s true, there were a lot of people like that.
Mingosu: It was the first time I got a main role.
TeraKoyasu: Right?
Mingosu: Fukuyama too, probably...
TeraKoyasu: Just...there were a lot of firsts going on.
ChanYui: And there were a lot of inexperienced people
Mingosu: Now he’s a big time actor so he’s just like “What’s up!”
ChanYui: I know, now he’s such a cool guy.
TeraKoyasu: There were just a lot of first timers there, and I had this really crucial role in the series. I was a little insecure at first, because it was such a different role from anything else I’d done, but...
9:00
RieRie: Yeah, this is just “Taihen Gundam” (A-lot-of-effort Gundam)
[Laugh]
Mingosu: You used to say that ALL of the time.
RieRie: Really? That often?
Mingosu: Yeah, all the time. TAIHEN GUNDAM
RieRie: Wow, I can’t believe I used to do that. I totally thought I came up with it just now. I did it all of the time?!
[Laugh]
ChanYui: Nothing has changed in the past fifteen years!
Mingosu: It was kind of a hit word.
TeraKoyasu: You haven’t changed.
RieRie: Nope, nothing has changed.
ChanYui: Nothing’s changed.
RieRie: That’s good.
Mingosu: A youthful Tanaka-san is talking in the background.
ChanYui: Yep.
RieRie: So true. Aw, Milan.
Fujitsu: I don’t think it was nervousness per se, but how did you feel joining the project much later than everyone else, Koyasu-san?
TeraKoyasu: Yeah, I wasn’t nervous, but...when you start working later than everyone else, it’s really hard to know what the mood is like at the studio. At the very least though, I knew how my character had to act, and I knew that he had to be an overwhelming character. I just had to beat the shit out of Park.
[Laugh]
TeraKoyasu: I just had to make sure that I put her down, again and again. I had to make sure that she didn’t think she could win against me.
10:00
TeraKoyasu: I had to traumatize her.
[Laugh]
TeraKoyasu: I just knew that I had to be a big presence in the studio. I had to make it known, that I was impressive. Just as impressive as the character--otherwise it wouldn’t have worked. So there was pressure on me to make sure that that side of my work was fulfilled.
RieRie: Wait, were you like that in your first recording?
TeraKoyasu: I mean...I couldn’t really say, but I went in with that feeling.
Mingosu: Yeah, you definitely had an aura.
RieRie: Yeah, I mean. There’s definitely a difference in experience, for sure.
Mingosu: Yeah, there was an aura.
TeraKoyasu: Man, why do you have to say that while making such a face?
RieRie: Yeah man, how could you say that to the person with the aura?
TeraKoyasu: We’re the same age. I won’t stand for this.
ChanYui: Oh, I’m the same age too.
All: WHAT! NO WAY!
TeraKoyasu: You’re so young though.
ChanYui: Thank you!
RieRie: You’re SO young.
TeraKoyasu: You’re so young! You’re so adorable!
RieRie: You really haven’t changed at all.
ChanYui: Thank you so so much! But really though, we were all a similar age group too.
RieRie: Oh! Kiri-chan was the same age as us too!
11:00
ChanYui: Right, right!
TeraKoyasu: A lot of us were the same age.
ChanYui: Yea, we were all in the same age range.
Fujitsu: Were you in your twenties then?
RieRie: I don’t know.
TeraKoyasu: In your thirties?
Mingosu: Just minus fifteen, you guys.
RieRie: I’m 47 now, so...thirty two?
TeraKoyasu: Just in your thirties...just starting out.
RieRie: You’re right.
ChanYui: “Just starting out”...
[Laugh]
Mingosu: I was in my twenties.
TeraKoyasu: Imai-kun, we don’t care about your age.
Mingosu: What do you mean you don’t care!
ChanYui: LAUGH
Mingosu: Wait, we’re all talking about age. Let me get in on this discussion.
TeraKoyasu: I mean. We couldn’t care less, if you were in your forties then.
Mingosu: There’s no way I could have pulled THAT off in my forties! That youthfulness!
TeraKoyasu: I bet you could’ve. I mean, I’m sure you still felt pressured to be the “cool guy” and act like one back then.
Mingosu: I mean. I never would have thought that they’d give me my character.
RieRie: Oh, wait. Was this your first time getting the “cool guy”?
Mingosu: Yeah. I know that Tsuruoka-san was there when I auditioned for Phil. And he was just like “Oh dear, WHAT is happening”...
ChanYui: DID HE REALLY?
Mingosu: All I could say was “Yes.”
12:00
TeraKoyasu: But you don’t get those kinds of roles anymore, do you?
Mingosu: This is true.
ChanYui: You get those kind of...muscular types.
TeraKoyasu: You kinda get the Gym Ghingham kinds now.
RieRie: You’re always howling or shouting in the studio now. Like, your typical role now.
TeraKoyasu: I bet it’s because you were so loud towards the end.
Mingosu: Oh, is that why this era began?
TeraKoyasu: I bet people started type casting you in that direction, because of that.
ALL: UNIVERSE!
Mingosu: “Gekkouchou de aarruuu”
ALL: UNIVERSE!
TeraKoyasu: It really is this episode, isn’t it! HA!
RieRie: Imai-kun, you kept creeping towards that way!
[Laugh]
RieRie: Dude, you knew you had to stop, but you still went at it!
Mingosu: And like, remember when we were recording and Koyasu-san had already been in-studio for HOURS? He was so totally exhausted, and me being the kid that I was, I was just like “UNIVERSE!” at him!
TeraKoyasu: I was just like “Ah, stop.”
Mingosu: But I knew that if I didn’t give it my 110%, I would die in this fight.
TeraKoyasu: Right, right.
Mingosu: A really tired-looking Koyasu-san was just like “Please...I’ve been here alllll dayyyy.”
ChanYui: Yeah, that last episode seemed like unbelievable work.
13:00
TeraKoyasu: IT WAS unbelievable work!
ChanYui: You were fighting ALL DAY. You and Park were just like “Uwaaaaaaa!” And just arguing the whole time.
TeraKoyasu: I had to bring Park to my level though. I just had this mission. And she just wouldn’t shut up about it later.
ChanYui: Wait, really?
TeraKoyasu: She was just like “You’re so awful. So awful.”
[Laugh]
Mingosu: Awful?
ChanYui: That’s so mean.
RieRie: I mean. This is a robot anime. Why are they fighting with swords?
Mingosu: But that’s an homage, you know.
Fujitsu: For the first Gundam.
RieRie: Oh, right. The first Gundam ended like that too.
ChanYui: Ohhhhh.
RieRie: But like...who would’ve thought...they’d bring out these ...
