The concept of mechatronics is very important today to meet the customers’ ever increasing demands and still remain competitive in the global market. Very often a mechanical engineer without the mechatronics background is considered equivalent to a mechanical engineer without the engineering drawing knowledge. Mechatronics requires thinking products and processes so transverse. Mechatronics is "burst the walls, with a steering matrix. The pilot at the highest level of the enterprise is essential in this context, to afford in front needs to be implemented. The design should no longer be sequentially: the mechatronics approach requires thinking about the product as a whole (all skill areas at a time) and not by separating the mechanical part, then electronics, then the sensor – actuators and computers at risk to achieve additional cost prohibitive.

Mechatronics
Mechatronics 2 is a design process that includes a combination of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering and computer engineering. Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of engineering, that is to say, it rejects splitting engineering into separate disciplines. Originally, mechatronics just included the combination of mechanics and electronics, hence the word is a combination of mechanics and electronics; however, as technical systems have become more and more complex the word has been "updated" during recent years to include more technical areas. French standard NF E 01-010 gives the following definition: “approach aiming at the synergistic integration of mechanics, electronics, control theory, and computer science within product design and manufacturing, in order to improve and/or optimize its functionality".

Description
Aerial Euler diagram from RPI's website describes the various fields that make up Mechatronics A mechatronics engineer unites the principles of mechanics, electronics, and computing to generate a simpler, more economical and reliable system. The term "mechatronics" was coined by Tetsuro Mori, the senior engineer of the Japanese company Yaskawa in 1969. An industrial robot is a prime example of a mechatronics system; it includes aspects of electronics, mechanics, and computing to do its dayto-day jobs. Engineering cybernatics deals with the question of control engineering of mechatronic systems. It is used to control or regulate such a system (see control theory). Through collaboration, the mechatronic modules perform the production goals and inherit flexible and agile manufacturing properties in the production scheme. Modern production equipment consists of mechatronic modules that are integrated according to a control architecture. The most known architectures involve hierarchy, polyarchy, heterarchy, and hybrid. The methods for achieving a technical effect are described by control algorithms, which might or might not utilize formal methods in their design. Hybrid systems important to mechatronics include producation systems, synergy drives, planetary exploration rovers, automotive subsystems such as anti-lock braking system and spin-assist, and every-day equipment such as autofocus cameras, video, hard disks, and CD players. What is mechatronics? - Mechatronics definition. 3 Mechatronics is a synergistic combination of precision engineering, electronic control and mechanic systems. It is the science, that exists at the interface among the other five disciplines: •
mechanics
•
electronics
•
informatics
•
automation
•
robotics
It is one of the most dynamically developing fields of technology and science. The word "mechatronics" appeared for the first time in Japan in 1969. mechatronics = mechanics + electronics + computing Mechatronics - the genesis The term mechatronics was introduced to the technical terminology by the Japanese company Yaskawa Elektric Corporation (a company founded in 1915) and since 1971 it has been protected as a trade name. Mechatronics in the initial period was understood as the design and construction activities involving the inclusion of electronic components and systems to the functional structure of various precision mechanisms. In 1982, Yaskawa Elektric Co.. resigned from the patent protection of its trademark and from now on we can all use this term. Today it means mechatronics engineering activities including designing, testing and operation of machinery and equipment, in which there is a 3

high level of functional integration of mechanical systems with electronics and computer control. Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field, combining in a synergistic manner the classical knowledge of mechanical engineering, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, optics and computer science. The aim of mechatronics is to improve the functionality of technical systems and the creation of new concepts of machinery and equipment with built-in "artificial intelligence". In various literature sources several definitions of mechatronics can be found, almost all of them put the emphasis on the functional integration of mechanical actuators with electronics and computer control, eg: mechatronics includes programmable electronic devices and electromechanical systems for embedded, distributed structure of the sensors, processing signals, actuators and communications. Isermann defines mechatronics as a combination of knowledge from three disciplines - mechanics, electronics and computer science.

Mechatronics was formed in the engineery environment of automation and robotics, where the "mechanical" way of solving the design was not adequate to the expectations and opportunities that provide other areas of technology, particularly electronics, optoelectronics, materials engineering, especially computer science. Mechatronics may be regarded as a modern approach to automation techniques for the broadly defined needs of engineering and education. It can be assumed that mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field of science and technology, dealing with general problems of mechanics, electronics and informatics. However, it contains too many related mechatronic areas that form the foundation of mechatronics and cover many well-known disciplines such as electrical engineering, power electronics, digital technology, microprocessor technology, and other techniques. Mechatronics provides an opportunity, not only humanization of machines, but also it changes the mindset and the approach to technological issues and most importantly teaching new technologies and ways of acquiring knowledge and skills. The most important feature of mechatronic devices is the ability to process and communicate information accurately in a form of different types of signals (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, optical, chemical, biological), with high level of automation of these devices.
The basic assumption for the design of mechatronic devices is the acquisition by the device itself which is responsible for the lower levels of the process (task) to allow the user to focus on higherorder functions. Mechatronic device structure can be considered at two levels: abstract, consisting of the conjunction of partial functions of the main function device and the specific plane, consisting of the combined structural parts and assemblies, which are natural carriers of various functions involved. The integration of mechatronic device structure is a result of links among "smart" teams which communicate and cooperate. The linking mechanical structure, sensors, actuators and information processing occur as a result of mass flow of streams, of energy and information.

1. The stationary part of an electric generator or electric motor. 2. The non-stationary part on an electric motor. 3. A reaction force described quantitatively by Newton's Second and Third Laws. When a system expels or accelerates mass in one direction, the accelerated mass will cause a proportional but opposite force on that system. 4. Synonyms: fixed, immobile. 5. A mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by reducing its volume. 6. The part placed at the left front of the engine. 7. It is the exhaust duct of the engine. This is the engine part which actually produces the thrust for the plane. The energy depleted airflow that passed the turbine, in addition to the colder air that bypassed the engine core, produces a force when exiting the nozzle that acts to propel the engine, and therefore the airplane, forward. 8. A part found in all turbine engines, also called combustor, in which the fuel is combined with high pressure air and burned. The resulting high temperature exhaust gas is used to turn the power turbine and produce thrust when passed through a nozzle. 9. Shape of a wing or blade (of a propeller, rotor or turbine) or sail. 10. A rotary engine that extracts energy from a fluid flow.

Animated Gas Turbine Parts Most modern passenger and military aircraft are powered by gas turbine engines, which are also called jet engines. Jet engines come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but all jet engines have certain parts in common. On this page we have a computer model of a basic turbojet engine which you can animate by using the buttons below the picture. To have a look inside, push the "Show Parts" button. At the front of the engine, to the left, is the inlet. At the exit of the inlet is the compressor, which is colored cyan. The compressor is connected by a blue colored shaft to the turbine, which is colored magenta. The compressor and the turbine are composed of many rows of small airfoil shaped blades. Some rows are connected to the inner shaft and rotate at high speed, while other rows remain stationary. The rows that spin are called rotors and the fixed rows are called stators. The combination of the shaft, compressor and turbine is called the turbomachinery. The "Exploded View" button shows you how these parts go together. Between the compressor and the turbine flow path is the combustion section or burner, which is colored red. This is where the fuel and the air are mixed and burned. The hot exhaust then passes through the turbine and out the nozzle. The nozzle performs two important tasks: it is shaped to accelerate the hot exhaust gas to produce thrust, and it sets the mass flow through the engine. The slide below compares this computer model with a photo of a real, Pratt and Whitney F100 engine. The F100 engine is used in the F15 and F16 fighter aircraft. As we can see in the picture, jet engines are complicated pieces of machinery with lots of parts which spin on a central shaft. To enclose the spinning parts, a jet engine is shaped like a long cylinder. At the bottom of the slide, we have a much simpler computer drawing of the engine parts. Various parts on the photograph are labeled and the corresponding parts on the computer drawing are indicated. The F100 engine picture does not show the aircraft inlet because the inlet is part of the airframe and changes from aircraft to aircraft. The F100 is an afterburning turbofan engine Człowiek – najlepsza inwestycja Projekt nr POKL.04.03.00-00-131/12 „Inżynieria wiedzy dla inteligentnego rozwoju” współfinansowany przez Unię Europejską w ramach środków Europejskiego Funduszu Społecznego

and the flame holders for the afterburner are shown in orange in the nozzle of the drawing. The front section of the F100 is the fan section which is not modeled on the computer drawing. To analyze jet engine operation, engineers have adopted a numbering scheme for the various parts. This scheme and the accompanying two-dimensional schematic drawing are given on a separate slide (visit the following website for the drawing and further explanation: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/turbparts.html). Most modern airliners use turbofan engines because of their high thrust and good fuel efficiency. On this page, we will discuss some of the fundamentals of turbofan engines. A turbofan engine is the most modern variation of the basic gas turbine engine. As with other gas turbines, there is a core engine, whose parts and operation are discussed on a separate page. In the turbofan engine, the core engine is surrounded by a fan in the front and an additional turbine at the rear. The fan and fan turbine are composed of many blades, like the core compressor and core turbine, and are connected to an additional shaft. All of this additional turbomachinery is colored green on the schematic. As with the core compressor and turbine, some of the fan blades turn with the shaft and some blades remain stationary. The fan shaft passes through the core shaft for mechanical reasons. This type of arrangement is called a two spool engine (one "spool" for the fan, one "spool" for the core.) Some advanced engines have additional spools for even higher efficiency. How does a turbofan engine work? The incoming air is captured by the engine inlet. Some of the incoming air passes through the fan and continues on into the core compressor and then the burner, where it is mixed with fuel and combustion occurs. The rest of the incoming air passes through the fan and bypasses, or goes around the engine, just like the air through a propeller. The air that goes through the fan has a velocity that is slightly increased from free stream. So a turbofan gets some of its thrust from the core and some of its thrust from the fan. The ratio of the air that goes around the engine to the air that goes through the core is called the bypass ratio. Because the fuel flow rate for the core is changed only a small amount by the addition of the fan, a turbofan generates more thrust for nearly the same amount of fuel used by the core. This means that a turbofan is very fuel efficient. In fact, high bypass ratio turbofans are nearly as fuel efficient as turboprops. Because the fan is enclosed by the inlet and is composed of many blades, it can operate efficiently at higher speeds than a simple propeller. That is why turbofans are found on high speed transports whereas and propellers are used on low speed transports. Low bypass ratio turbofans are even more fuel efficient than basic turbojets. Many modern fighter planes actually use low bypass ratio turbofans equipped with afterburners. They can then cruise efficiently but still have high thrust when dogfighting. Even though the fighter plane can fly much faster than the speed of sound, the air Człowiek – najlepsza inwestycja Projekt nr POKL.04.03.00-00-131/12 „Inżynieria wiedzy dla inteligentnego rozwoju” współfinansowany przez Unię Europejską w ramach środków Europejskiego Funduszu Społecznego

going into the engine must travel less than the speed of sound for high efficiency. Therefore, the airplane inlet slows the air down from supersonic speeds. J. Also called a combustion turbine; a rotary engine that extracts energy from a flow of combustion gas. It has an upstream compressor coupled to a downstream turbine, and a combustion chamber in-between.
III READING 3. Read the following text about a turbojet engine and do the exercises Most modern passenger and military aircraft are powered by gas turbine engines, which are also called jet engines. The first and simplest type of gas turbine is the turbojet. On this page we show an animation of the pressure variation through the engine. The pressure value has been color-coded as described on another page. How does a turbojet work? On this slide we show a computer animation of a turbojet engine. The parts of the engine are described on other slides. Here, we are concerned with what happens to the air that passes through the engine. Large amounts of surrounding air are continuously brought into the engine inlet. (In England, they call this part the intake, which is probably a more accurate description, since the compressor pulls air into

the engine.) Here you will see a tube-shaped inlet, like one you would see on an airliner. But inlets come in many shapes and sizes, depending on the aircraft's mission. At the rear of the inlet, the air enters the compressor. The compressor acts like many rows of airfoils, with each row producing a small jump in pressure. A compressor is like an electric fan. We have to supply energy to turn the compressor. At the exit of the compressor, the air is at a much higher pressure than free stream. In the burner, a small amount of fuel is combined with the air and ignited. (In a typical jet engine, 100 pounds of air/sec is combined with only 2 pounds of fuel/sec. Most of the hot exhaust has come from the surrounding air.) Leaving the burner, the hot exhaust is passed through the turbine. The turbine works like a windmill. Instead of needing energy to turn the blades to make the air flow, the turbine extracts energy from a flow of gas by making the blades spin in the flow. In a jet engine, we use the energy extracted by the turbine to turn the compressor by linking the compressor and the turbine by the central shaft. The turbine takes some energy out of the hot exhaust, but there is enough energy left over to provide thrust to the jet engine by increasing the velocity through the nozzle. Because the exit velocity is greater than the free stream velocity, thrust is created as described by the thrust equation. For a jet engine, the exit mass flow is nearly equal to the free stream mass flow, since very little fuel is added to the stream. The thrust equation for a turbojet is given on a separate slide: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K12/airplane/aturbj.html Text used by permission of NASA
