Pendant assembly [1] Put the wrong sides of the hearts together. Cross the tails that are exiting the bottom 80 of the pearl heart through the bottom 80 of the crystal heart. The tails will be used to adjust your tension as you work. [2] Using the thread from the crystal heart, exit the two 110s added in step 10 of “Shaping,” and sew through the corresponding 80 of the pearl heart. Continue around the hearts, sewing e c through the 110s and 140s added in a b h the last round of the crystal heart, and the corresponding 80s and 110s of the pearl heart. Leave the tops of the hearts unjoined. [3] Gently pull the two tails from step 1 to shape the heart. Cut a piece of plastic wrap into four strips. Using one piece at a time, crumple the plastic wrap and stuff it into the heart. Continue adding pieces of plastic wrap until you achieve the shape you desire, but don’t let the heart get too puffy or the stitches along a the side bulge. b c [4] Using the thread from step 2, finish
joining the edges of the hearts. Use thea a two tails at the bottom of the heart to b c b c make a final adjustment, but don’t trim the tails.
Bottom embellishment [1] Using one tail exiting a bottom 80, pick up four 140s, and sew through the other bottom 80. Pick up four 140s, and sew through the first 80 again. Reinforce this ring of beads with a second thread pass, exiting an 80. [2] Pick up five 140s, a 4 mm bicone, a 6 mm rondelle, a 4 mm bicone, five 140s, the 10 x 11 mm pendant, and four 140s (figure 6, a–b). Skip four 140s, the pendant, and four 140s, and sew back through the next 140, 4 mm bicone, a a c . Pick 6 mm, 4 mm bicone, and 140 (b–c) cb up four 140s, and sew through the 80 b d your thread exited at the start ofethis d e step, going in the same direction (c–d). [3] Pick up four 140s, then sew through the established fringe thread path (d–e). Pick up four 140s, and sew through the 80 again (e–f). End both threads (Online Basics) exiting the bottom of the heart.
Bail [1] Use a remaining tail, and exit the center 80 at the top of the heart (figure 7, point a). Pick up a 140, and sew through the next 80 on the same side of the heart (a–b). Sew through the corresponding 80 on the other side of the heart (b–c). Sew back through the 140 just added and the center 80. Pick up a 140, sew through the next 80 and the corresponding 80 on the other side (c–d), and back through the 140 just added. [2] Pick up two 140s. Sew through the first 140 added in step 1 (figure 8, a–b). [3] Pick up a 140, and sew through the two 140s added in the previous step (b–c). Pick up a 140, and sew through the four 140s you sewed through in the previous step (c–d). Sew through the first 140 added this step (d–e). [4] Work in odd-count peyote (Online Basics and e–f) for the next 27–29 rows, making sure your bail will fit around your necklace or cord. Set aside the working thread. [5] Add 12 in. exiting the base of the peyote strip. Pick up a 2 x 3 mm rondelle and a 140. Skip the 140, and sew back through the rondelle and the peyote strip (figure 9, a–b). Pick up a 2 x 3 mm rondelle and a 140. Skip the 140, and sew back through the rondelle and the peyote strip (b–c). Retrace the thread path several times to secure all the beads just added. End the thread. [6] At the end of the peyote strip, exit the center 140, and pick up enough 140s to make a loop large enough to fit around the 2 x 3 mm rondelle. Sew through the 140 your thread exited at the start of this step (figure 10, a–b), and retrace the thread path several times. Sew back into the peyote strip, exiting an end edge bead (b–c). [7] Pick up three 140s, and sew through the next edge 140 on the strip (c–d). Sew through the next edge 140 (d–e), and repeat to add a three-bead picot edging
along both edges. End all the threads and tails. [8] Wrap the peyote strip around a necklace cord, and fasten the loop to the 2 x 3 mm rondelle. w

Susan Eisemann’s love of beading was sparked by necessity when she wanted the perfect accent for a handmade blazer. Unable to find what she was looking for, she decided to make a brooch and discovered beading in the process. Contact Susan at

Designer’s note:
You can make the bail permanent by stitching the end of the peyote strip to the top of the heart, then adding the small rondelles.
