SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ST. NICHOLAS PARISH From the Pastor’s Desk This weekend we welcome Fr. Dennis Jose, OSFS. Fr Dennis represents the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. Father will be telling us more about the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales and the work they are doing around the world and more to the point his mission and work. The Oblates were founded in France in 1876 to live and spread the uniquely accessible and optimistic spirituality of St. Francs de Sales by engaging various ministries of the Church. At the Pope’s request, the Oblates sent missionaries to Namibia in 1882. Today, the Oblates priests, brothers and sisters also staff missions in Benin, South Africa, Brazil, Columbia, Uruguay, Venezuela, the Ivory Coast, Haiti and India. They serve some of the poorest people in the world as parish priests, ministers, educators and social workers. American Catholics have partnered with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in this important ministry for more than 100 years. Every benefactor becomes a missionary by directly supporting the works of justice, mercy and evangelization throughout the world. All benefactors also become faithful Disciples of Christ, who said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” The good people of St. Nicholas are invited to be part of that community of missionary disciples, as Pope Francis wrote in Evangelii Guadium, “who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice.” Our prayers and offerings for the missionary work of the Church is a step in the right direction of our participating in this important work of the Church. We share in the fruitfulness of the mission and the joy in proclaiming the Gospel. God’s blessings are all around and in abundance. Our parish festival is quickly coming upon us as it begins in less than two weeks. Our Annual St. Nicholas Parish Festival begins Wednesday August 2nd at 6:00 p.m. and runs through Saturday evening August 5th. Our parish festival is an important fund raising event that helps defray the costs to the parish for our parish school. It is a good opportunity to visit with friends, enjoy good food and refreshments. We have entertainment, raffles, games of chance and rides for the kids. Oh yes, did I mention good food and refreshments? Please join family and friends at this year’s St. Nicholas Parish Festival. I said it once before and I think it is worth repeating at this point. The sale of the raffle tickets for the Grand Prize is directly connected with the success of our festival. This year’s Raffle Tickets have just been mailed out and you should have them. Unfortunately they have been sent out a little later then we wanted. Just the same, I encourage you to help make our festival successful in this aspect by buying/selling your raffle tickets. Besides… who wouldn’t take a chance to win $5,000.00? Good luck. The benefits from the festival are a great asset to our parish as well as the school. The funds generated from this event are only one part of the overall benefits. Working together, visiting with family and friends, enjoying a good time all build and renew relationships. People gathering and working together for a good and common cause always builds community. There is a twofold benefit, the building of relationships of our parish community and the necessary funds for our parish and school. Please plan on attending.
Lastly, I am hoping to get away later today for a vacation. The reality is that it is difficult to get away while being the only priest here and with everything that happens in the ordinary pastoral care of a parish throughout the week. I am fortunate that I was able to get Fr. John Stattmiller to cover for me next weekend. Finding a substitute is not very easy, especially when the parish is outside Franklin County where most of the retired priests live. So you take what you can get, when you can get it and act upon it. I am most thankful for Fr. Stattmiller’s friendship over the years and his willingness to give me a helping hand. During the week I have been able to get Fr. Thomas Kamau to take a couple weekday masses. He is able to be here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. There will not be a morning mass on Monday and Friday. There is a daily mass at St. Thomas Aquinas at 9:00 a.m. during the week. Sorry for the inconvenience, however, we must be thankful that we have the availability of a weekday mass. I will let you know about the morning masses for the following week in next Sunday’s Bulletin. It should also be noted that Fr. Peter Fagan, O.P. is still at St. Thomas until the new pastor is able to get there: eta around August 9th. In the meantime Fr. Peter is technically the only priest in town through the week as he works on the transfer of the parish over to the diocese and the everyday pastoral care of the parish. I know that he is very busy these days. These are also stressful times on the part of everyone involved in the transfer of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish and the departure of the Dominican Fathers. In a word, please be patient and understanding with this situation. We must keep the parishioners and priest at St. Thomas Aquinas in our thoughts and prayers during these days of change. If there are any emergencies please let those needs be known to either parish offices. Our parish staffs will know what to do. Have a blessed week. Father Ralko
