TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ST. NICHOLAS PARISH From the Pastor’s Desk Summer has unofficially begun. The warm days are ahead. It was noticeable last weekend. We were particularly aware of this since we were without air conditioning. The air conditioning units are fine. We fixed that problem last summer. However, the location of the compressors is the current problem we are encountering. The “chillers” are located in the bell towers at the front of the Church. This is also the location of the bells hence the term “Bell Tower”. These compressor units sit on the inside roof or deck of the towers. The problem is with the roofing or “decks” inside the towers. These are being replaced. Over the years, the wear and tear on them has taken their toll. They are compromised because of age and much rain. They have been leaking. Over the years they have been patched and repaired but now they are beyond patching and repairing. They need to be replaced. What does this have to do with the air conditioners? The units needed to be lifted off the deck before the roof replacement could take place. The units were lifted two weeks ago and replacement of the deck is taking place. We did not notice it over the last two weeks because the weather has been good. Hopefully this little project will be completed by this weekend. We do have the funds for this project. Thanks to all those who have been faithful to the “Capital Improvement” fund. However, this project has pushed other important matters back a bit. We have a number of repairs and replacement items that need and will need attention. We are blessed and cursed with an old church building. Our church building is grand. It is an awesome structure. However it is old. Grand old buildings demand a great deal of maintenance which happens to be costly. Foreseeing this potential problem years ago we instituted a “Capital Improvement Fund” envelope in our monthly packet of church envelopes. Many have used this envelope every month. (On the average about 50 envelopes a month are used.) Others have dismissed this item. Nevertheless, the extra envelope was intended to be an invitation for help. Just the same we have been saving for projects like our present project and have the money to cover this unplanned expense. Thank God. Then again we need to keep moving forward especially with this Capital Improvement Fund. We have more work on the horizon. One pressing issue is that we have to do something with the church windows. This is a major project. We also have a number of other needs to attend to and this is not counting any unplanned expenses. This is the downside of having a grand old church building: the planned and unplanned maintenance and repairs. If you have not been using the “Capital Improvements” envelope in the past, please consider committing yourself to this fund with a monthly donation. The last thing we need is to find ourselves in a crisis situation and not having the necessary funds. On the parish administration’s part, we will continue and remain good and responsible stewards of the parish funds. Here is the latest on this year’s Bishops Annual Appeal. To date we have 131 responses to this year’s appeal, including the 33 envelopes we received last Sunday. The number of responses to this year’s appeal is less than last year. It was our hope that there would be an increase in the number of families/households responding this year. This year’s appeal continues for a couple more weeks. Please, if you have
not picked up an envelope at the end of the pews do so today. Any response is better than no response. We do have a responsibility to do our part for the good of the diocese as well as the good of our parish. Now that we are in the summer months we are aware that many of our families will enjoy a family vacation. A well deserved vacation is truly a blessing. A family trip is a great opportunity for renewal and refreshment from the press of everyday life. It is also a great opportunity for building family relationships and bonds. As a family it is also an excellent opportunity to be aware of the origin of all our blessings: God. We all need to be in the practice of giving thanks to God for all that we have in this life. While on vacation it is a good practice to find a Catholic Church for Sunday Mass. It is a faithful practice to pause and give thanks to God which is especially important while on vacation. It is a habit of mindfulness of God. It is also a wonderful experience to attend Sunday Mass while away from home. Catholics are always welcomed in any parish church around the world. It gives a real sense of the “catholic” nature of the Church: the Catholic Church is truly a Universal Church. The obligation to attend Sunday Mass holds true even when we are on vacation. In fact it should be a good habit for a family vacation because it reinforces the priority of God and our Catholic faith in our lives. There is no vacation from our vocation as followers of Jesus Christ. It is also important to remind those who have extraordinary ministries here at St. Nicholas. It is important to make sure that your scheduled assignments as Lectors and Extra-Ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are covered, especially when you are away. This is called a ministry and not volunteerism. There is a difference. A ministry is a religious calling. It is a service to Christ and his Church. Volunteers assist people and institutions that are not particularly religious in nature. A ministry is a calling that may also require a sacrifice. It may be inconvenient at times. This is where the commitment requires a sacrifice. It is in making a sacrifice that the ministry reveals its holy calling. A person who is fulfilling a particular ministry has the attitude of loving and careful service for the Lord without counting the cost. There is a poison in the ministry whenever a minister as well as an extra-ordinary minister develops a minimalist attitude. All ministries require a generous heart that comes from a loving response to the great love and blessings that the Lord has showered upon us. It is a response of service to the Lord and his people. It looks beyond the institution and the people. It looks to the Lord. A last reminder about morning masses throughout the week. All weekday masses will be at 8:00 am until the school schedule resumes at the end of the summer. Also it is a good idea to check the weekly bulletin for mass times since there may be days that the morning mass will be cancelled. I’ll try to provide coverage in the event that I may be away. Have a great week. Father Ralko
