THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ST. NICHOLAS PARISH From the Pastor’s Desk There are a couple of things happening over the next couple weekends that I need to bring to your attention. Since this is the fifth weekend of the month we take up our traditional collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The collection is known as the “Holding the Hat”. This little phrase comes from the notable trait of St. Vincent himself since he was known to wear a top-hat. St. Vincent was always the gentleman. He was known as the Saint who wore a tophat. Just the same in honor of St. Vincent, members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be “Holding the Hat” at the doors of the church after all the masses this weekend. Your charitable donations go a long way in helping provide for essentials for some of our local citizens. Unfortunately the times are bad, the need is great and many are living in crisis situations. Be assured that those needs are properly vetted and verified. The St. Vincent de Paul Society has proven to be good stewards of the charitable contributions made by the good people of St. Nicholas. We also assist a few of the local outreach centers in the area. This same weekend the Diocese of Columbus has requested that we take up a collection for Catholic Relief Services for their relief efforts in Haiti. We are well aware of the great damage Hurricane Matthew inflicted on this poor country. They have faced devastation because of an earthquake a couple years ago and now they face further devastation in the wake of a hurricane. In a memo sent last week to all the parishes throughout the diocese this request was made. Since we already have a collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Society this weekend we will delay the Catholic Relief Serves collection for Haitian Relief to the following weekend. However, as you are by now aware, there is in your packet of offertory envelopes an extra envelope for “Catholic Social Services”. We take up this offering annually for Catholic Social Services. We have a local outreach center in downtown Zanesville. This office is located on the fourth floor in the Huntington Bank Building. Catholic Social Services is a faith based social service agency focused on improving the quality of life of people of all faiths and backgrounds during some of their most vulnerable times of their lives. CSS serves people in numerous ways: advising and helping seniors to live independently as well as for families in crisis to manage and thrive. In essence their mission is to assist families and the elderly live quality and dignified lives. Much like the purpose of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, there is a stress on teaching people how to budget what they have, set priorities and manage their funds. In a saying attributed to St. Vincent himself…“Give a man a fish and you feed him once. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for life.” Catholic Social Services consults and advises many to help them live independent lives with dignity. As for the Catholic Social Services envelope found in your monthly mailing… you can bring that offering anytime during the month of November. These special appeals always seem to hit at the same time. Just the same we all need to budget our finances every month and this also includes our charitable offerings. The sacrifice, that which makes our offerings holy, happens when we find ourselves stretched a little more and our budget gets a little tighter and we do it out of love for those in need. That is why it is called “charity”.
We grow in charity whenever we act in charity especially when it is difficult. Virtue is its own reward. This week we also have a Holy Day of Obligation: All Saints Day. The Vigil Mass for the Holy Day will be Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. On Tuesday, the Holy Day morning mass will be at 8:10 with the students from both Bishop Rosecrans and Bishop Fenwick schools in attendance. Tuesday evening the Holy Day Mass will be at 7:00 p.m. On Wednesday we observe The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day). On this occasion we will remember and pray for all the Faithful Departed and most especially for those who have died over the past year. The morning mass will be at 8:10 a.m. The students of both Bishop Rosecrans and Bishop Fenwick will be attending this mass since it is the normal day on which they attend morning mass during the week. Looking forward to next weekend, Daylight Saving Time comes to an end. Don’t forget to turn back the hands of time one hour. I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to the extra hour of sleep. With the Feast of All Saints this week we have one little pious thought. It would be a shame if we did not desire to become a saint. This should be the desire of every Christian: the desire to be a saint. As we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, we are reminded that we have numerous examples of heroic faith modeled for our lives by the Saints of the Church. It has been part of our Catholic Tradition to find a Saint that is personally inspirational. We are always encouraged to read about their lives. With the internet and the numerous Catholic web pages it is easy to research the Saints of the Church. As a pious devotion we are encouraged to pray to a “Patron Saint” seeking their intercession, assistance and guidance for our lives. We can be assured that the Saints will always lead us to their heart’s desire: our Lord Jesus Christ. Have a Blessed Week Father Ralko
