Glossary about the toxicology of restricted substances
This glossary is only related to the compounds mentioned in the Restricted Substances List of the Otto Group!
A Alkylphenols and Alkylphenolethoxylates (APEOs) APEOs cause environmental problems and are endocrine disrupting compounds. Antimony (Sb) Antimony is irritant and can damage the skin, the liver, the kidney and the mucous. Arsenic (As) and its compounds Even in small concentrations arsenic and arsenic compounds are very toxic, especially arsenic organic compounds. They accumulate in liver, heart, brain, muscle and hair. In addition they alter the nerve system. Arylamines – Azo dyes The production of Azo dyes is based on a reaction of arylamines. After absorbing such Azo dyes the human body is able to reduce them by metabolism and form the carcinogenic arylamines. Asbestos All accordant compounds are carcinogenic.
B Benzene Benzene is extremely toxic and carcinogenic. “Blue Colorant” – Navy Blue Navy Blue can cause skin irritation and causes environmental problems.
C Cadmium (Cd) Cadmium can be accumulated into the human body, e.g. liver, therefore the carcinogenic risk of this substance is very high.

Glossary about the toxicology of restricted substances
Carcinogenic and allergenous dyestuff These kind of dyestuff have a high carcinogenic potential. Some disperse dyes have also a very good dermal resorption, therefore a allergenic potential, and can be considered as possible threat to health. Chlorinated aliphatic compounds Chlorinated aliphatic compounds are harmful to health. Some of them are carcinogenic. Chlorinated organic carriers Chlorinated organic carriers are irritant and damage the liver, the eyes, the mucous, the nerve system and the kidney. Some of them are also carcinogenic. Chlorinated paraffins Chlorinated paraffins have high toxic potential. Chlorinated Phenols Chlorinated Phenols, especially PCP, and their salts are highly toxic for aquatic systems, harmful for human health and persistent in the environment. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and Halons (CKW) CFCs and CKWs are responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer. Chromium VI Chromium VI is carcinogenic and corrosive on tissue. Cobalt(II) chloride Cobalt(II) chloride is supposed to be carcinogenic, teratogenic and genotoxic.
D -Dichlorotoluene -Dichlorotoluene is toxic and is considered to be carcinogenic. DDT DDT is carcinogenic and accumulate in the liver. It changes the liver and enzymatic activity. Dimethyl fumarate Dimethyl fumarate has been found to be a sensitizer at very low concentrations, producing extensive, pronounced eczema that are difficult to treat.

Glossary about the toxicology of restricted substances N,N-Dimethylformamide N,N-Dimethylformamide is harmful to the skin and the eyes. It is supposed to be teratogenic. Di--oxo-di-n-butyl-stanniohydroxyborane (DBB) DBB is a highly toxic substance. Dioxanes and Furans Dioxanes and Furans are very toxic compounds and cause “chloracne” and disorder the enzymatic and nerve system.
F Flame retardant substances Flame retardants are harmful to health and should not come into contact with the skin. Brominated flame retardants are known to be bioaccumulative, to produce dioxins and to have endocrine-disruptive effects. Formaldehyde Formaldeyhde is strongly suspected to be carcinogenic. It irritates the mucous and provoke allergic reactions.
H Hydrofluorocarbons (FKW) Hydrofluorocarbons impact the earth’s atmosphere and contribute to the global warming.
L Lead (Pb) Lead harms the central nerve system.
M Mercury (Hg) and its compounds Even in small concentrations mercury and mercury compounds are very toxic, especially mercury organic compounds. They accumulate in liver, heart, brain, muscle and hair. In addition they cause a change of the nerve system. Monomers in Toys All mentioned monomers are harmful to the human health. Some of them are carcinogenic.

N Nickel (Ni) and Nickel compounds Nickel coming into direct contact with skin may cause allergic reactions. Nitrosoamines Nitrosoamines are very toxic and carcinogenic.
P Perfluorinated Surfactants (PFOS, PFOA) PFOS and PFOA are toxic, bio-accumulative and persistent in the environment. Pesticides Pesticides cover a whole range of different biological pest controlling substances like for example fungicides, herbicides and insecticides. In general all pesticides are toxic, have carcinogenic potential and alter the immune and the nerve system. Plasticizers – Phthalates Plasticizers may cause allergic reactions and are harmful. Phthalates are potentially carcinogenic and can alter hormones. Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) PAHs are harmful to the skin, the eyes, the airways and the alimentary canal. Some PAHs are carcinogenic. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and terphenyls (TCPs) PCBs and TCPs are very toxic and carcinogenic. PCB is mainly accumulated in the liver. Preserving agents in Toys Preserving agents cover a wide range of toxic substances. Some of them are carcinogenic.
S Soluble Heavy Metals in Toys Even in small concentrations Heavy Metals and its compounds are very toxic, especially metal organic compounds. They accumulate in liver, heart, brain, muscle and hair. In addition they alter the nerve system. Solvents in Toys All these solvents are toxic or highly toxic substances.

T Tar oils Tar oils are toxic and carcinogenic. Tin organic compounds Tin organic compounds are deleterious, skin irritant and can be easily absorbed through the skin.
V Vinylchloride Vinylchloride is carcinogenic and damage the liver, the bones, the skin, the milt and the gullet.
W Wood preservatives in Toys Wood preservatives are highly toxic, can be allergenous, harmful to the eyes and cause environmental problems. Some of them are neurotoxic.

Categories for carcinogenic substances Category 1 Substances known to be carcinogenic to humans. There is sufficient evidence to establish a causal association between human exposure to the substance and the development of cancer. Category 2 Substances that should be regarded as if they are carcinogenic to humans, for which there is sufficient evidence, based on long-term animal studies and other relevant information, to provide a strong presumption that human exposure may result in the development of cancer.

Glossary about the toxicology of restricted substances
Category 3 Substances that cause concern owing to possible carcinogenic effects but for which available information is not adequate to make satisfactory assessments. Categories 1 and 2, if purchased from a supplier will carry the “toxic” (T) symbol and the Risk Phrase R45 (May cause cancer) or R49 (May cause cancer by inhalation). Category 3, if purchased from a supplier carries the “harmful” (Xn) symbol and the Risk Phrase R40 (Limited evidence of carcinogenic effect).
